Paul told me that one of these poles with one of this pass was real two more full days of this he said it's amazing though because you know you'd never you would never guess it one of them is real and and I instinctively I said I kept saying I don't believe you I don't believe you you're lying and then I picked up this one and after I'd done that I then knew that I had to go and pick up even though I knew he was lying and even though when I stood up and said I hate you laughs because he knew he knew that I was gonna pick them up and they were we both knew what the deal was we both knew that I was doing it but also there was that game of the resistance Avalon so you were bad and also that people probably don't know about that what was that awful cop game that we played well transparently the bad around doing crimes going I'm not I was really ineffective as stopping criminals I'm like I just keep getting through my fingers it's like you're the other corrupt policemen they know Paris the same game where was it had like Breyer two tokens and then sometimes the right to go can stand on your cop car then you couldn't drive anyway yeah anyway how do we structure questions if you have questions like why did we think this was a good idea I've been thinking about it so that's our weeds billed as being like late-night Q&A but like for me you Quinns it's it's literally like 6:00 a.m. 6:00 a.m. it's just like I feel like I've been up all night partying I had without one beer and my body has gone I have gone full Mad Money I couldn't do it I thought about having a beer but I'm like for that reason I'm not touching it rather than having a beer you put on the jumper I've got to say I came in here I walk past the queue and it was great and I came in till this room's chilly and I'm sorry I'm going back to my room for a show I could come back in any I could do a costume change mids no no maybe on Sunday all right maybe on the Sunday podcast we can have a costume change under the table Timbits costume check that's a great idea I could totally get changed into this table the thing is you'll just fall asleep down there and then have the weirdest dream right yeah somebody somebody remind me to go underneath this table and take my clothes off on Sunday okay somebody remind me this is this open season kinda secure a supposed to ask us questions do not ask the questions that again so I have an ask FM account and I used to on Twitter I used to be like I'll go and ask if M account if you want to ask questions you can ask me questions so that'd be interesting because people will ask question then I can answer put on the internet people read it and I didn't think that what would happen on ask if M happened which was people would go what's your favorite game for two players what's your favorite game for 4 players what's your favorite game with bears and what's your favorite game when you got 15 minutes and all questions but the questions about and the answers are all gonna be bad what's your favorite color if you can't play blue ask fm of like that you'd look for any girl online I've really enjoyed just a moment ago that clearly we were so off the rails that that Lisa very commonly box over and whisper no Meah just tell people to stand up and ask questions in the middle as if we've forgotten this freewheeling wasn't just a madness but it was just genuinely just forgotten how we were doing wait but you poor you forgotten the best thing about your ask FM account which I the question which was what was it like was it phrase remember wizard not you that was you right yeah I was gonna say that as a punchline but it was like how long have you and Quinn's been together but it was all written in lowercase and disjointed and I think I told you about it and then it like it was the shortest in Terry like you immediately admitted like there was no level of like oh that's funny operator is like polly was me so what's the answer oh it's just this could be what are you doing it doesn't matter we may an Amsterdam in 2000 people know this story oh man Paul and I met on the Internet [Applause] tonight everybody say no I'm gonna do that I know this story Bob and I were part of a what had just don't be a douche no be as close to it that's fine again we're gonna see how much you pop and every time you do I'm gonna be like Matthew okay so fallen over positive and what my place is now Paul and I were part of a forum that created scenes that reviewed video games but not like reviews like you know the mainstream press published it was like underground and we judged everyone so like from like 13 I was looking at reviews and gonna say this is awful but so then we were part of the IRC channel who uses IRC yeah four people and then one of the people in the IRC Channel was I live in Amsterdam who wants to come to my house and I was like yeah I'm 13 or 14 or whatever all not true go to a woman's what that's gonna be what happened no I mean you were not 13 I was like for seeing you at 17 no way 2004 it's basically entrapment this was 2004 quite liable ourselves anyways a lot of other things also suddenly fall out of alignment including like times when you've been drinking I must've like a 16 17 17 whatever it was no it was a big thing because a lot of us were like quite young like late teens early twenties and you at the youngest boss of what one of the most interesting writers already yeah and then we got to know hopefully not too much of Italian for people you're so like we start to get to know Kaiser McDonald who was writing for folks she was like 14 or 15 and she was going on press trips writing for people yeah but yeah well give her some bad magazines as well not the huff like Maggie's didn't treat her well anyway but yeah I went to Taiwan time sedan without having met any of these people and went to Pat's flat and then Paul walked through the door and you're like I'm Paul Dean and then it's like I've been talking to you for three years so who'd we met any elder P cuz I knew some of the people going I've never met any of them it was like I went I was that I remember five people I've been talking to fit on the internet for three years I'd a story could have ended very and we wouldn't be here I thought we were like two spheres of people like gliding Nicaea and then me yeah actually a really good trip remember playing sing stuff yes would people who'd light up as a question like perform an old lien and lovely queue in front of us - point the camera this is not I'm not meaning this as a joke I mean obviously what was the pastry you're talking about which one at the beginning Timbits do they market Timbits is like doughnut holes is it like Tim's bits cuz it's the guys actually cut me from ever ordering them all right I keep thinking what you just thought I can't get just off the books Tim's bits right yeah first I wanted to give him a round of applause for the gentleman that came up first because I feel like this is a collective thing of people trying that it's like someone else trying to trick me into thinking that Timbits or a thing I'm confused yeah just go into a shop and ask for Tim's bits and also one of these pairs is real I am a gullible man I believe in everything because I want to believe in everything like a Darden but I am really gullible I believe things I don't but I do anyway okay so this is kind of a funny question so we'll be the judge of that with your placement of your props within which have gotten better over the years I noticed the teacups is there any significance at the particular episodes like with the teacup in it or are you guys just messing with my mind we already wish teacup seen the mugs yeah the Malick's yeah the mugs I mean we're just drinking tea he's right because yeah we everyone in England now hates the keep calm and carry on thing because it's everywhere and yeah and also by the way trivia that poster was never actually used in World War two it was designed but never used it was actually meant it's be used if England got invaded which is funny it has a propaganda which everywhere if they took if Germans took over oh you know things were going really badly it was it wasn't that kind of like I don't worry about getting bombed it was like emergency for like this is what we do if yeah it was like but then someone found in a cupboard and thought was really no no no it was holy Moss who brought it back somehow was it yeah I believe so had won the Garfield stuff he's got crimes to answer for sorry yes no just so that we but also every English person ends up getting given mugs with the Keep Calm and Carry like keep calm and eat cupcakes or yeah that's yours keep oh I've got to because my mum saw one in the video and then bought we won't be swearing on which probably hasn't been in the videos because it's rude sometimes this is the problem is you do right you do right what the heck in deeds yeah I apologize for that it's cuz we're just drinking tea was I in the video today oh I didn't see that you were drinking I thought we rotated them before its show have we I mean we haven't put it on live we could we can blur it I'm not gonna blow that you know it's worse word rinse in children oh just if I swear right now if you don't know it's it we should be zero which lever how I got my laptop it's my mom's fault my fault you can't put the genie back in the lamp now my parents my parents have real Christians as well as living in Church of England's is just like it is pretty much just cups of tea in the quality yeah sorry it's my mom she's she's crude yeah but mostly we just drink tea I did it really try and drink out of the queue Scrabble maka let's do a question because I think it's real cool on a board game show because my name is yeah I had I had to point out to you really recently that it's super cool because it's a queue and then it's ten points I know there's a clean end oh no yeah but yeah I you hadn't noticed that and I was like this is yeah but can't tell them that they'll know that we're not as clever no yeah that's why we got swearing in marks cuz we thank you very much the question yeah hello hello my name is Jason I like the color blue and long walks on the beach hmm I've had a beer as well same question he's a number two I was talking with Quinn's a little bit earlier but you guys have done a tremendous amount for me and my family over the years helping me bring us together helping us helping heal us through difficult times through you know recommending your games now two years ago I went to Gen Con to do two things one to seek Kingdom death and there was a character that I wanted to see with an interesting cloak but they did and the other thing that I wanted to do was go to the live podcast now I did not know at the time that Paul was having visa issues couldn't make it into the country so they had a contest to become the avatar of Paul as he did yes well you as one does and it was you questions about the biker gang that you were a member of those sort of I didn't like to touch on that too much that was a very different time it is common knowledge on the Internet I did put it on your Wikipedia page it's a longer the thing that I'm fight for to hopefully yes right next to it actually thank you but lo and behold I ended up winning the avatar of Paul Dean classes the polling glasses are here yes the Paul Dean glasses are here now throughout my gaming I was a competitive gaming playing doom Town Star Wars all a bunch of other things I brought these classes with me because I know Paul's affinity for dice is nice I I will say that these classes help me roll like crap for two years now so Paul do you want your glasses back thank you thank you very hard very hard to see without them now that makes everything better I think this is JD glasses I brought from home Oh endless source of pointless props I thought I was gonna get a Highlander for a minute I even challenged Paul to be the one true Paul as I end with like real violence but it didn't that's great how's that little tart this what does it call the ends in there it's real sweet [Music] [Applause] it's real sweet and then sort of winds this about I want to try it yeah it's real sweet it's like it's like it's like she tried to make a nickels cake and then forgot what they were doing that's very brother bus joke here yeah what's an hos cake it's basically it's like compressed raisins in kind of flaky pastry but the raisins are somehow kind of soaked in something so they kind of squishy and delicious and it's a glitch or a road accident okay so imagine if imagine a loaf of bread were instead if the only thing that my American pipers the English foolish is eating it and then like it's been horrified not just a hairy chest but that anyone would do this two foods the it's basically bread but rather than flour you use raisins it's fine if you eat it with like lots of butter but it needs a lot of butter no no but Eccles cakes are good if you like raisins you gotta get a necklace cake in you question so maybe it's my weird sense of humor but one of my favorite of your guys videos is the one where Paul goes to a convention by himself and like everybody you go to a booth and you're like hi I'm from shut up and sit down and they're constantly like who are you is Quinn's here that's how Paul and I met yeah oh I was actually in that video oh wow there is an FFT employee who helps caught me away and and Cynthia was a hundred percent up for that time and actually that that said the FFG events team at that time were lovely about calm and as I said in that video when to watch them like lots of people were playing Artemis the coop space do space job simulator where you have like your captain who's like sure about Cher and someone who's driving and someone who's doing wrong driving driving somebody doing laundry and all this basically eating things so we went in and I went to watch it and the idea is like oh it's gonna be funny because it would be like space Allah and everyone will be doing everything wrong and it was just FFG flying around space ships efficiently so lots of stuff from packing up and thinking about moving abroad and whether that would be Europe or the US or Canada and I ended up making this thing that was like 40 minutes long and it had all of I thought I hadn't shot enough stuff at the con so I panicked and I feel that loads of things which is sad for editing the footage now my job's really hard yeah Quinn said something earlier in a Q&A that I found interesting the parcel inspiration that you got from Top Gear which i think is interesting because that's a show that got me interested in cars okay I was interested in board games before you guys but but that's something that I think is interesting especially now over time that it's three of you who are regularly in videos that that's something that I think is similar to Top Gear too and also the phone you all have very distinct points of view and personalities I was wondering whether that's something that just happened naturally or whether it's something that you kind of lean into like oh this is a Quinn's point of view to have that's definitely when we're writing scripts they're all and you know you fill in a bit for the other person to write there will be like add Paul's thoughts or like add pulse points of view Quinn's can go ahead and then it's that's a small bit or big bit um I've got more tendency to just go nuts for jokes and then just leave in capital letters Quinn's explains the game which is not a joke or like and then we write a funny ending at some point and that sometimes doesn't happen oh god the amount of things I've looked however there's been a script and it's like it will just say like funny ending question mark and things are real hard the amount of how many ideas have you done which ends with like a really long shot which is like you crying or you lying down or being angry like sometimes the stars align you just you come up with a genuine idea for a joke but imagine that often you know that's just ending jokes is I mean like that's the whole Monty Python thing they didn't they couldn't do endings just purposefully made it so each sketch just blurred and the next one in a way that didn't make any sense just as a way of avoiding ever having to end jokes which is genius yeah but we wit like we didn't I don't think we tried to be like testing different people no yes the the thing I was gonna ah you go the only thing I was gonna say is that um I'm the distinct personalities thing is just because the skill set to do the videos that we do is really really niche um in terms of like you mean just being able to review a game is hard and you know we all work for video game publications that show you like finding someone who can just write to review is he's really rare like Cynthia's work is like defining like the Cynthia is like really good at doing RPG reviews and like they're great if you haven't read them we were looking for an RPG writer for years so having Aryan team members in here how you in poverty people we well we just we're I don't know we've just different and it happens to gel very well and I feel like this is a good thing with Pip and with Cynthia's we've also met people who are very much their own people it's as if the unique humans but know that the thing the pronto sterna make is that it like to be able to write reviews and then present them which lord knows we can I couldn't do when I started and film and edit and have an homage at the board game scene and have it like a love of the board game scene like you could it would be difficult to find three of those things but there's like six of them so I think when we found each other to saw the site it's like oh you're the one other person who could do this and so there's not much like especially yeah like especially like yeah I think you and Paul attend to kind of disagree on stuff a bit more frequently than we do to be honest and I think that's actually just because the fact that we are kind of two people who didn't meet until quite like you know we were probably like I must have been mid to late twenties when we met for the first time I've known you for that long but though we were just like two we're people cuff from almost the same cloth I had so much in common in terms of methodology and how it worked and sort of stuff we want students so it is interesting to me why it was really hard for us to work together yeah it was yeah it took a long time for us to actually like find the ability to do that properly but at the same time that means that occasionally we do disagree and stuff it's always interesting the point where like yeah when we're writing video reviews especially we will almost like write lines for each other but then it will be the funny thing sometimes have you be like write something about them like actually this isn't how I feel about it yeah writing your opinion yeah like you'll write something for me to say and I'm like that's not actually no I don't feel that I feel like this but actually more often than not especially kids will play the game and then we'll talk about it it'll be the thing of like you'll then write something for me that's based on something I said and I'm like yeah that's that's how I feel but it's rare that we actually really disagree on stuff to be honest a lot of time we will just play something or both go or at the same time that like same sort of mechanics yeah but the disagreements are fun as well and I think that's how I think some of the best reviews we've done not counting it some of the best and some of the worst reviews we've done I think is Paul and I disagreeing and sometimes that's really good and then sometimes it's like we just fail to express ourselves as well I think sometimes it's like weird former have a shared review is an odd thing yeah I think you'll notice I mean I like you I like I think it's a good idea for people to watch a thing and come away thinking about what the folks who made it feel like I watched this they said this face of this they explain why I can make out my own maybe they just said I feel really stupid doing this in these glasses I'm sorry I tried for as long as I could [Music] wearing two player pairs of glasses once is the most distracting thing it's more like there could be a fire and I'd be less distracted but like I feel that's the ultimate thing a review should do is not tell you what to think but I guess you know some publications will have a review and then I have a like a couple of paragraphs up to it's a second opinion from another reviewer but we do a like often having two people reviewing a thing in the same thing is no it's unusual before neither the firm itsu formats of reviews a few nods and the audience there's at the most popular Japanese video game magazine the scores games out of 40 because it's for people giving 10 out of 10 or like out of 10 reviews and it'll be one person he loves the genre and then the fourth is always somebody as I understand it doesn't doesn't like the genre so like a few games still get perfect forties it's like you have this genre or you hate it and you all give it a ten over ten which is a really interesting format I think but at the same time therefore this has got a lot of stuff about that I haven't seen something like it's kind of being written by one person well no I think it's just there's been lots of times over the years especially in more recent years where it's been like really and things that they have felt like maybe the kind of idea of being for disparate people feels less and less like it's relevant and of yeah like it's more like maybe the team is so tight knit that it's it's more like as and I guess that's why we don't end our of you being like and now his Matt's opinion on because generally speaking our opinions will align and if they don't then we'll make a point of it but yeah I will say that the so the first review I ever watched of you guys back when I worked to ask if she was the five tribes review which was one which you and Paul disagreed on a lot and that sort of got me hooked on the channel because of the ways in which you're talking about the game and I felt like I could understand it and was eager to play it or not well you you get to play it or not I I was all the eager to play and I actually did enjoy it for a few gaming sessions before I sort of throw you know tired of it and and got annoyed by slaves but the other but now the more I know you guys the happier I am once something like inish happens oh we just completely and it's so route and it like that that is now my favorite I shut up and sit down video ever because of because your enthusiasm for the game and each other and each other's mutual enjoyment of the game comes across so much yeah if I if I won't like if someone asks like well who do you write for I show them my article and the next thing I show them is the NS review oh really yeah that's cool yeah when Paul and I what get to work together at the end cuz you know we have a lot of feelings about Java sit down now because I mean this is what happened yeah but when Paul and I get to work together again it's like his we'd have the you know in the style tree of doing like the early episodes and stuff and then it's like always an agree or disagree still about stuff yeah which is always interesting never not not yet bored of thinking about what you think of about games ya know quite seriously because it's usually Quinn's always has a good opinion or a good thought about something and it is often very often and often you know still surprising and I really value that from everyone on the team combat is literally yannick it's true this is not very interesting is it nice ball does that answer your question definitely yes I think it actually sort of illuminated to me I think what I liked about it which is like it's not just one opinion you're getting it's it's a bunch of opinions it's sometimes multiple pages cabal of opinions kicking down your doors but that's the thing about reviews is sometimes they can be just like monolithic and the opinions that you all expresser are complex alright yeah thank you thank you in Plex I yeah I yeah they should and I don't I hate the idea that everything's got to be binary good bad you hated this you loved it it's like well why we thought this because of this and here are some reasons and here's why and you might feel slightly different and hopefully the review articulates that it's yeah I mean it's a it's a common complaint in that in our reviews that some be like I don't know how to feel like you know they what's your view in the light well do I buy it or not it's like hmm it's really complicated depends on you yes what do you think it's obtaining full decisions everything you for that thank you very thank you thank you very much hi everyone hey what's your name where you from hey I'm Adam I'm from Seattle icn's oh I've heard of that so I was watching the year review earlier today about Marco Polo and one of the things that kind of struck me is you know kind of the sense that I got was by all means it was it was a pretty pretty good game but there was just some little spark or something that was missing maybe just something a little extra and it kind of made me think about a couple of the really good panels I saw today about you know marrying theme and mechanics or you know meaningful decisions for example which maybe doesn't apply this one but maybe some other games I'm kind of curious as you know people who have played a tremendous amount of games how often do you find that you know a game is maybe undone by a questionable design decision versus just a game that for you doesn't work like kind of top to bottom like how often can you play a game and just kind of say like I think this is the thing that's missing that separates like a game that maybe doesn't quite do it for you from a game that's really really quite good I want to say like never sorry it's a really good question but I think it's actually very interesting that a game is I can't think of a single game that's like oh there's this one thing right if this was fixed then it would be better like because I think if you're making a good game you never if you're if you if you have the right attitude and you're talented and you're lucky and the other eye practices and all the stuff you need yeah that one thing doesn't slip by you because making a good game is so complicated and so hard and like you know we I mean maybe we don't say it enough function we sit down we have so much respect for the designers that do it people constantly ask they are would you make a board game it's like no are you kidding it's so odd oh my god I'm really cynical about you know whenever you have I have reviewers who is just like this game would be so much better if they just change this one thing because it's like you know yeah I'm clear on about I it's fine to be like I don't like this thing in a game but when people are convinced that they know how to fix something it's like you know it's like a classic thing I think is it Warren Ellis who said about like you know people say that they people tell you what's wrong with something and they'll be wrong but they'll be right that there's something wrong with it though but they'll tell you how to fix it and their idea will be wrong and I think that's the same as a reviewer it's like that's why I mean to be honest I kind of felt like when we were in the Marco Polo review and we were talking about like the idea of like maybe with points were money in a game where you're a merchant Nuka amassing power yeah I think that's one of those things where I felt comfortable saying that because I felt comfortable being like yeah that's a simple thing that would make the game better but a lot of the time when we like making any specific suggestions about how a game would be better we try to avoid that stuff because we don't really know like yeah and the thing to say is that while we can talk generally about how if Marco Polo had abandoned the victory point thing and focused on a game about merchants and money yeah you would need to make a bunch of other changes yeah exactly it's not just like change there so but it's just as we said the art would be better if it did X but we also know that that's more expensive yeah I think was something we talked about when we were like before so we miss scripting I think it's just it was particularly interesting with Marco Polo and the fact that I was saying to Quinn's it was like you know there's something about this this type of game and it's something of the era of like it's a euro game it's kind of you know it's crunchy and it has a classical theming and I for me now it's got to the point where it's like sometimes I like them and sometimes they're really good but for me sometimes it often just sets off alarm bells because there's something about choosing that kind of era of thei s suggests that you you're gonna do just kind of going through the numbers like you've made a solid game and now you're giving a classic wrapper and it's just to me I'm like it's because I wish you to those games that there's like not enough care in the are not enough care in the design not enough care in the theme and it's just like it's always those games that I get most excited about playing but then always disappoint me the most it's often like you know if I read a manual and it's got mistakes it's really difficult to pass that doesn't mean the game is bad what it means is that the pit the team behind it let a manual slip through and then that attitude is reflected through the entire yeah I'd love to hear Paul and Cynthia's thoughts on this hey I want to pass out to Cynthia right away know it's a really good question but I'm trying to think of games where I would just say I'll just change this one thing because everything interlink so much yeah I mean I've definitely had lots of experiences where I can say like oh I wish I had this I wish this game had more of and usually it's two with interaction like this is a fine game but I just don't feel like I actually got to engage with you across the table and that's usually the number one sort of glaring thing of course fixing that requires like two hundred and forty different mechanical adjustments yeah and I know this thinking about how this translates to RPGs is a slightly different matter because sometimes those things that are annoying you are things that as a GM or as a player you can change especially as a GM you can be like this percentage of this game is working for me this percentage is not there for I'm throwing this other percentage in the garbage and doing whatever I think is best and that's that's a different matter so maybe if we or you know how to fix a game we would recommend it because then you could just play it with that one subjects yeah I think we did that with um flick him up well again pain is what we found it to be really really very bad but the components and the idea is so good and it's so easy to make your own level yeah so we said okay there's an example flick him up as a game with one thing wrong with it and you can ignore it and Cynthia's completely right that we then recommend it anyway cos it's like orders don't do that just do this it's a really great question yeah yeah yeah yeah absolutely I mean actually I'll kind of tell a brief FFG story which is I'm the winner adventure game they got that board game from CD Projekt RED and they got it in an early beta version which had a very minimal player interaction and the FFG team hacked away at it for I think two years or something and they still couldn't get it into a game which which sold well and which which did well and got good reviews in which a large amount of people enjoyed some people did enjoy it but it still wasn't just like a shiny beautiful perfect FFG thing and that's two years spent trying to to quote-unquote fix the game yeah and yeah I think sometimes as well you can you can see like the signs why people have tried to just Chuck something in like I found when we reviewed terraforming Mars there was there was player interaction that but it was always just like I'm just gonna randomly just dis mute about to you and stuff like that often you find the game is the player interaction is just occasionally people having cars where it's like out of nowhere I'm just gonna damage what you're doing you'll damage your machine and it's like I I'm not gonna lie I think player interaction in a game like that it's really tough but sometimes it kind of feels like you just have gotchas they've got Chuck in to kind of tick a box and it's like it's yeah it's just doesn't work like it's not good when we found ourselves when we were playing like actually specifically be like I could this to you but I don't really want to because you know how much work you've put into your careful machine and the idea that someone else is just gonna break yours out the blue it's like that doesn't actually make me feel good and it would certainly won't make you feel good so it's sort of but this stuff is complicated you know we haven't got the answers it's just sometimes you're just like why have you done this thank you oh absolutely thank you [Music] yeah that was a really good question it was I'm looking for in a 30 on something that's been bothering me for a couple of weeks can somebody attempt a definitive answer for me oh no Matthew was a sleeper awesome Matthew come on at the end of season three of Rick and Morty is Beth look I know I haven't seen it so I have a big group that meets pretty regularly as long as everyone in here right some people who some people in there me I'm I'm starting to get this feel from the group that they're ready to transition and RBG's they're asking me and I'm terrified that because I am NOT ready to be DM or GM at all how can I transition from Puerto Rico or in cornea or power grid or suburbia into RPGs we're surprised Rico Emporia hundred up honestly I'm not sure you can because those are such different animals RPGs are which is not the answer you're looking for Quinn's probably don't be turning yes Oh too late you just had it for a while and I was fine and hopefully your friends care enough with you too I think about this and then talk about it I would talk about this openly with you being great first of all like so you're talking about RPGs ask them very open-ended questions like what RPGs you hear about are you interested in playing do you like things which are very dice driven and very much like games or do you want to test stories collaboratively do they want to enjoy really dice and see what chance happens to them do they want something which is going to replicate real life with very very precise careful rules that may take you hours to go through just to tell a really good story and enjoy each other's creativity oh is that terrifying and different games very much offer different things like if you want the simulation astiz something like D&D is sort of basically almost simulation missed on the beginning of that edge kind of give it to this group because that's all about storytelling as a group and if that's something that's intimidating to you as a GM just even thinking about it that's probably not something you're ready for think about games which already have that sort of asymmetrical structure as sort of a gateway so maybe like the center Imperius also you get used to the idea of having to run multiple characters at once before you're having to run multiple characters that you also have to instantaneously giving personalities and backstories we say is we had a really good line on that first RPG podcast where we were answering this question and the thing is is that myself Paul Cynthia Mann will have first RPG sessions and we all sucked and we kept going because you have as much fun we just didn't stop so doesn't matter that it's tough I mean it will be tough and Cynthia and I study disappear I miss that I kiss I read beat myself up and it's dead and stuff but I still kept at it because it was great and it was so rewarding yeah yeah yeah but like nobody pretty much nobody is gonna join you when they start driving but you might get in the car and do a little bit driving that was kind of fun yeah yeah everybody start shakily but shaky doesn't necessarily bad and I can't echo Cynthia enough in that sort of thinking about what do you want all the players went from it and just asking like do you wanna build cool characters or do you just want to like hit a lot of dragons it's just ensuring that the group is understanding there is at all times even if you like competing and stuff and if you're fine if you're going to get so it is a collaborative experience that's one yes for where the players feel that the GM is trying to get one over or vice versa because adversarial it just doesn't work and say it has to be this sort of like supportive thing of everyone's working together to have fun but and understands that when the GM is saying no actually that's not gonna happen they're doing it because they're trying to make the experience better yeah Cynthia is totally right just start with the conversation of what excites us all in the afternoon and if you don't that's your foundation of like what we wanna do then you can't go too far wrong because you because you'll be collaborating players might be bashing against you and trying to test the limits and try new stuff those at any point like they're not actually also like taking the time to go or what saying but if you in it like it's really hard but because it's sometimes that you being on the spot to be creative and yeah it's if it'll count sometimes for this I'm doing is one of them so getting things all the things I'm going quite the way men especially finger come from traditional games sometimes could people could find it frustrating and if they didn't start treating you as being like and it's difficult because sometimes you are literally the adversary right but if they start treating you as if you're part of that then I think the stress of that can just basically make it a really unpleasant atmosphere quite quickly yeah but I think the main thing is I don't know anyone know if any of us now just let you down as a GM and gone well that was that was really not too hard and I'm not doing it again if you're brave enough to do a first session that's the hardest part over and everything else is easy you'll keep doing it absolutely so just do one session thank you ten minutes left so this is going to become a quick fire round about yeah we talked about this a lot you particularly raised in the passes where you have to remember to enjoy what we're doing and occasionally take breaks or if something goes wrong or yeah I think yes no just see it as a conveyor belt at work yeah I think I've mentioned this a lot but just because I do more hours usually than these two you know I'm compensated and stuff but so in my role is like quasi managerial position as soon as we start getting money coming into the brofist I know some of them I know will be able to Evan thank you very much the first thing we did was like I gave rule 2 is like make great content rule 1 is make sure having fun and so it's like you know if it like it might look like a coating line it's like are we having fun no okay stop stop everything right now because as a passion driven site then because you guys don't know like we love the things that way passionate and you can instantly tell if someone stops caring right exactly it's so clear and which is I mean I do have a lot of respect for people like on tabletop but I think all of us you it's difficult to watch tables are very like the some of the celebrities there don't care as much sits officer oh yeah yeah it's me that's like I said this I think it's I don't know it's a cultural single signed by yeah I can't I can't wash people who didn't care about things anything yeah so sorry that was not that was an unnecessary timing but yeah it's like are we having fun and then if it's not then and you know we've had lots of times what we tried to mix things up and their heads doesn't work remember those appear where we were like no because we you know the main thing is obviously we do need to keep making reviews and videos we do need to be playing at one point it was like Quinn's had the idea of being like well look we all lived in opposite sides of London and frankly Kings the middle it's like getting to another city sometimes or gauge somebody else's house and the other side is a nightmare so wewe tried to arrange a weekly thing to me up and up in a bar play games and I say our papers in the hill great idea and we did it for like two or three times and were like this isn't working just using no memory of this yeah the local public info and it was like we just like but in theory it was great because it's like look we all know our place this will be really convenient we can every week we can meet up and play games and it was just it just it just didn't work it was very round and there and also it was a bit too regimented and it's just but yeah every now and then we have to kind of look at things and go you know we need to mix this up to get this working but sometimes we mix it up and it's just like this is bad this is not fun but we just nip it in the bud why don't you forget it I was just gonna say it's everything becomes easier if you like what you're doing and so it's so when you know that if you need to take a break he can step away and take a break or if you don't feel great you can just tell your team members I don't for your greater anger if once you know you have a bit of breathing room and if you're very excited about something you can tell your colleagues and they're like bump that at the top of the schedule you're clearly excited once you have that just the engine room driving passion excitement everything else becomes easier because you just like what you're doing so you just do it and yeah everything doesn't go away the only times that because obviously you have a problem açaí than I had trouble with I think not first Martinsburg - again so negative review that I published recently like that's I think the time that's hardest to keep the love alive because it's like often if we're it's a big soccer game or it's a game it's just so huge like first marshals on c4 that you have to review and it's negative then not only is it like completely unpleasant because you know that because we all know the designers and so it's like really upsetting to like have to be like hey here's all the reasons in the last year of your life was a mistake no no no no no no I mean like in terms of the design is like you know Rob WF would fully admit like them if there are mistakes maybe see for like that's not me correctly or anything it did like you saying these don't usually talked about it quite handily yeah yes unbelievably hard when board games but the fit though the worst of the thing that really does kill the love is like when we do review its negative it's really hard it's like pulling teeth and you do it and then the comments are all Kickstarter back is going to go wrong you are absolutely wrong you're an idiot who didn't want card enough you didn't play enough for that really oh yeah by the way I should yeah just point out that if you ever have a different opinion to some of these people about a game it must be because you're playing it wrong there Batman Anna must be a you must be playing my game going if you feel different about it exhausted be touching on something I tried from them from being more of us in the world of video games and making videos on YouTube about video games that it's the one the one main obstacle to to to loving what you doing this in as well there's a is unfortunately the partner pros is where you put things out into the wild the actual process of making videos is consistently almost a joy it's that if then when other people watch them so because when stuff does get crazy and something happens like the giant l5 our thread responses that happened a couple weeks ago you guys don't see what's going on behind the scenes which I now have the privilege to sort of see which is everyone madly supporting each other and taking care of each other and that's a lot of how the site continues to work is that we all have each other's backs yeah and it's not just love for the material it's like without that teamwork things things wouldn't fly and things went sore and me as beautiful they are and that's that's a huge part of it and sometimes it's going just and easy and laughing and playing games together and sometimes it's like you know talking about how best to handle a difficult situation in the comments thread yeah I'm not puttin that that knits into we could we should wrap this question up but it yeah like having fun together means that you can be a team as well which means that when things do get tough then you can be like you can actually this stuff as well like you can't ignore it is the other main thing I'd like you know it would be easy to just be like hey scout about it like you know yeah we've got this problem something you know people are having this beef in the comments and stuff but just forget about it move on but it's actually it's the same thing that like you do have so we do have to get our hands dirty and stuff like it's it's actually that I think one of the key things that keeps our love for this site and this hobby is the community yeah I mean we are literally talking to a roomful of people our own convention which is just insane now who's not gonna make any sense to me for a long time but even it's just a thing like you know it does matter like the community and the the culture of board-gaming matters to us and so when we have stuff kicking off on when we have people popping up in the comments we have horrible people coming from other websites and we're really luckiest and very often but whenever we raise points or even briefly okay this kind of issue of people turned up as always yeah in this stunt bowl where I'm like hey that's a good Orientalism actually this games fine some people don't like what yeah yeah it's like wait think about this yeah we need to then you know it sometimes it'll be a lot of websites will go hey don't worry about it like forget those guys but unfortunately it is just a case of in this it's like no we need to look after this like we cannot leave the garden untended and so it is just a case of being like hey who's got some time today to like roll up their sleeves and deal with it like and sometimes that's just unfortunately reality of having a nice community is a lot of talk about niceness on the internet and it's rubbish because niceness is doing nothing usually being good means getting your hands dirty and sometimes as paul has very pull took the bullet last time because everyone else was really busy but it's just like almost like what do I do you just got to sit there and ban people and it's gonna take hours and you're gonna read a lot of bile and it sucks but do you know what I I'd ban some racist people and I slept well [Applause] [Music] I've been valued but you're still gonna do it hello as it were it's not over yet because the other side of that wall could be like a fight you know the thinking community definitely a fire somewhere here okay oh no what I was enjoying that that was already on you how much time on the cruise and now it's kind why was the cruise going that could be man it's the same because some of you especially recently who would win in a fight between me principal and it's just like it's Quinn's because like Paul wouldn't want to fight and I wouldn't really care who won but this is eating I will fight you to the death but I wouldn't ruin my whole where was the cruise going what was the cruise going for the Rika little the detail disaster on the boat too many games on the question but just while standing in line washing the panel by now my question now is do we think Matt wakes up in the morning am I gonna die in my sleep it's been a rough 30 minutes of it I mean I was thinking earlier when I say in my hotel room just having some food I was like me I'm just gonna die of exhaustion can you do that can you just die did you just suddenly be like cast that'd be a really weird episode of like CSI in my hand there's like the white line Jane are we're really upset I didn't have a punch line without the pun is is rubbish it's rubbish with the pump was the other question if I can be altered am I going to die how are you gonna die tonight I don't know what album are you listening to right now so why don't they do two is not so much now than but I go on YouTube and there's this whole section of electronic 80s style the nighties music good new retro wave and it's like 80s pop cell or 80s rock style or 80s electronic and any fusion of those and there's often I think it's wonderful because I didn't have to pay anything for it's just some Gucci right and just like my dad some of this stuff is really good it's just we may be really talented at all time do you know that's still making good music no this is awful like this is like you catch another light our lowest end I call my visit me acquit idealistic child's back tonight she's easy I mean I probably change two hours I've been listening to human performance by park at quartz and the other one the grizzly bear and what's the cool Oh the latest grizzly but painted ruins painted ruins which is just unbelievably good it's like addictive I didn't think I'm gonna be addicted but then you listen to it like hundred times a week and you're like my brains in a melt but it's pretty oh it's a it's a thing I want to thank Ghana it's a my friend who used to DJ magnetometers we had all my music from but yeah it's a pop group from Ghana called Muhammadu and Marianne from they have oh yeah yeah welcome to Mali is the other thing too and then I will focus in talk about a tronic music and Max Cooper's emergence is that now it's writing this down south in a way was emergence is real good and there will be a test later oh I'm doing the patellas in our wits & wagers thing because we were just sourcing questions for that and slack and then we had a lot of huh they kill you one of the conscious being how much did we pay Matt for his first video my first video yeah we can't tell me we're having a live in town that's all right yeah I wish I want to be a fly on the wall for the word some I just think Cynthia were you listened to I mean none of this is good I'll tell you the album have been to most recently and then I'll tell you the song that I listened to you this morning and yesterday which Paul already knows so I'm still sucking Beyonce's lemonade and ironically the longer I stay in Canada and I'm surrounded by Canadian political ideologies and all that stuff in education systems the more fervently I listen to lemonade I try to reclaim my American heritage Owens brokenness these past two days however it has been the mash-up of head like a hole with call me maybe hey Simone says thank you very much can we have another Sean Bean podcast because seriously man you're great northern accent is great and northern Shan be dies a lot and you could bring in a red shirt so the shot be versus the red shirts show not any other size it's something yeah that was I was really sure you know this one sampling quest bike run how it yeah it's a game where you play covers and they die but there's a variant where your play Sean beans Sean being on stage now do if you won't do it how you really do it your big boys like literally I don't you know when you're such a phonon and you try and take a photo and you've got your phone so tonight I'm gonna factory for that I can't do accents I can die in my sleep [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
