one of the ways of making lines is to leave a gap kind of like a reverse applique so on my turtle here if you look how I've constructed the plates on this turtle I've left a gap where my lines between the plates are you can see that right there and I have pieced up to my line so I can see my line as I'm working and I do that because then I will slip the contrasting line underneath it after I get farther along now here my my turtle is is you know coming together on this one it's a little farther along and this is usually at the point when I would decide what that line might be and because I have made our I've picked a few fabrics in here that I hadn't really expected that had some purple in it there's purple dots there there's purple dots there purple dots there and so I decided to maybe make some purple lines I've dropped a couple of them in here already now in this case my drawing the original drawing I did you can see here was in red so don't be confused by that it's still just the original drawing it just happens to be red marker instead of black marker but you can see that I can I'm you can still see that marker so here I've got those gaps now since I want to try some purples and I don't know which ones and it's probably even best to do a mixture of purples it'll be much more interesting than than if it was just one piece of a vert so here now I've got a bunch of purples and I've already cut some strips off of them so I'm going to make thin lines with these not so thin strips by just placing them underneath my edges and you can see I've left those the edges of my collage plates loose now here I'm just going to trim this one right here and this gets slipped under and now I can take this piece and I could maybe bring it over here and slip it under the edge there we go and so here you can see how there you go so I've got a little heavier line I've got a thinner line right there if I want to make that line a little thicker I can just trim this edge right there and open up that line a little bit there we go and I can vary it I can turn it a little lighter I had a lighter piece of fabric right here I can make it a little lighter as it goes to the lighter side of the shell so let's try that and if I decide I don't like it it's not a big deal to just turn around and substitute these or I could turn it a whole different color if I wanted let's just put this right let's get that under there there we go so you can see how it goes from lighter to a darker purple and I can do any number of variations with that so that's one way of making a line leave a gap as you're assembling it
