[Music] so the name of my book is quiet the power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking and that's really what my message is it's about the way we live in a culture that sends introverts the message that they should be that they should turn themselves into extroverts rather than drawing on their own natural strengths which would benefit all of us if we did that and this message that introverts get tends to be sent from a very young age in our schools and so we're especially passionate about going out and working with schools to really think differently about temperaments and make space for the introverts and extroverts so the first type is awareness and we found that many teachers are you know deeply well-intentioned and really not aware of what temperamental diversity is and about the way that our children introverts and extroverts are just wired differently and function well in different environments so some of it is just raising awareness and then once you've got the awareness in place and their practices that we help schools with like rethinking should you be grading on class participation or is there perhaps a different way of both encouraging students to engage with classroom material and also to evaluate them differently on that basis there are a lot of studies out there or there are studies out there I should say that that have found that when teachers are calling on students that after they ask their question if they just wait for a few beats before calling on students more hands will go up because you're giving the students who want to reflect a little bit the time to do that before they answer and we encourage not to speak in terms of waiting time but reflective pause because waiting the very word wait implies that it should be moving faster and you have to somehow wait to you're having to slow yourself down but really the default should be everything speedy whereas the reflective pause I think gives you more of the sense that there's actually a real benefit to slowing down and thinking it's also questions like thinking about the physical spaces can we create environments that have more nooks and crannies and quiet spaces for kids to get away at lunchtime at recess time can we offer more options so that some kids can participate in a big noisy free-for-all but maybe there's also a space where you can go off to play chess or do puzzles or read a book things like that [Music]
