i was 16 years old at a concert i had just recently met a girl who invited me to go to parties at concerts and it sounded real exciting to me at 16 years old you became pregnant with his baby at one point you know you had gone through a very traumatic fire and he said that he wanted you to abort that baby i was in labor for many hours and stephen sat beside me snorting cocaine on the table beside my bed i didn't realize that i would be taking a path that would take me to the brink of death [Music] hi i'm shelby and welcome to shelby search bar a brand new series on deep dive where i take you description box for details stephen tyler was born in new york on march 26 1948 to his parents susan ray and victor talarico steven's father victor went to juilliard and was a classical musician who taught music in the bronx steven having a classically trained musician and pianist as a father would be the very beginning of his love for music mainly raw steven tyler didn't just dream of being a rock star as a child he knew that's what he was destined for saying i've been a rock star ever since i could remember i came out of my mother's womb screaming for more than nipple and nurture i was born to strut and fret my hour upon the stage fill stadiums do massive amounts of drugs and sleep with three nubile groupies at a time all i needed was for the rest of the world to see who i truly was stephen tyler the demon of screaming steven formed his first band at just 12 years old spending most of his childhood making music with various garage bands and getting into typical teenage trouble in the 60s for smoking pot but by the time he was 18 in 1966 stephen tyler was in a band called chain reaction having recorded two singles with cbs records that made him a local legend in centipee new hampshire where he spent his summers at his family's vacation home [Music] through his team steven experimented with an ever-changing lineup of bands by 1966 the 18 year old was fronting chain reaction a group that would release two singles on cbs records [Music] i was crazed i wanted to play rock and roll it was whatever it takes you know fake it till you make it right pretend to be somebody until that somebody turns into you in the summer of 1966 stephen started playing gigs at the barn a popular music venue near his family's holiday retreat in lake sunapee new hampshire he became a local hero to kids like joe perry and tom hamilton with his music playing on local jukeboxes and his band's performances at a venue called the barn caught the attention of some other aspiring musicians who would later become founding members of aerosmith joe perry and tom hamilton however his first taste of success was short-lived as chain reaction broke up in 1969 but that opened the door for steven to connect with joe and tom who had formed their own band and were headlining at the barn his time with chain reaction was steven's first real taste of living the rock and roll lifestyle and he was hooked [Music] what turns you into a groupie music obviously but but what is it about it even to this day it's hard to describe the feeling that i get when i listen to music it touches a part of me nothing else can in a way nothing else can so these are some pictures of stephen in there yeah that's a great one how did you meet him aerosmith didn't exist yet right nope we went to the same high school he was 18 i was 16 when we met but he was in a band and he was really really cute and really sexy you have no idea i wish i did his dad was a musician always on the road so he had this big house in yonkers he had the attic room and it was basically a mattress on the floor and he had these huge speakers one on each side of the pillow so you'd be like laying in bed making up this gorgeous guy with all this music kind of washing over you it's really really nice i'll never forget it he had so much energy and he was such a wild man and he was always on that it got to be a bit too much and he had had this big mouth when i would like get high on pot i would look at him and his mouth would be this huge thing so you left stephen and he kind of broke his heart right yeah that's what they say i think he was kind of mad that i had left him but i was too young and there were too many people hanging around in his house and there was too many drugs fast forward to 1970 stephen tyler and joe perry would get an apartment in boston on commonwealth avenue the band living together and creating music every waking moment was steven's dream in the early days of aerosmith the band members consisted of stephen tyler lead vocalist joe perry lead guitarist bassist tom hamilton joey kramer the drummer and steven's childhood friend ray tabano who played rhythm guitar ray would be replaced just a year later but would stick around with the band in a more manager-like role they lived as starving artists for the first two years having to steal food from the local stop and shop to feed themselves taking any gig in any small town that consisted of at least 50 people but no matter how small the gig they would always dress up and play as if it was their big break by 1971 aerosmith knew it was their time they even struck up sweet deals to put aerosmith on billboards across town that had sat empty and in fall of 1971 aerosmith caught their big break by playing at the legendary club max's kansas city in manhattan new york clive davis was at this particular show and aerosmith put on the performance of their life they got to the end of their set and were completely out of songs but the crowd wanted more so they ended up freestyling and the crowd went wild it was knocked out by everything about the band there was just charisma just riveting up and down the stage clive davis basically signed aerosmith on the spot to columbia records for a hundred and twenty-five thousand i remember davis came up and said you're gonna be a big star i'm gonna make you a star he came down and he uh said he would sign us that night was like wow we're big time we made it as aerosmith's fame was blasting off to new heights the rock and roll world had never seen before their everyday lives were completely transforming each day brought new accomplishments new exciting projects and since it was the 70s new groupies morning summer groupie did you matter you want me to be a groupie well group is an important job i research groupies on the internet they're [ __ ] they sleep with a band no that's not true they're like cheerleaders i don't want to be a cheerleader groupies a term coined in the 1960s as young women who would follow their favorite brand around on tour had its meaning changed by the 70s to basically mean women who chased after rock stars in hopes of sleeping with them if he doesn't strum a guitar or sing like a sex maniac anybody i used to be a groupie i went to new york it was just all these people you know and everybody's super nice to me and i didn't realize that the whole scene was all you had to do was have a body you know and like go back to a motel and ball and then the next day the person didn't even know your name or didn't care who you were you know who did i start with oh [ __ ] forget it the box tops oh [ __ ] never never oh that was funny the bus stops back in atlanta georgia and after the box tops was the fudge now it's big time and now you've hit the big time you get to [ __ ] the prettiest boys you get to smoke the best dope you um you get to meet all the most proud people um it's just fun it's just it's just really fun you get to like be on top you just get to ride on the plane they're in you know it's just like that just like i don't know it's magic it's not many of them have that much to offer really you know if they've got something special they're cool most of the chicks are flaunting it around just normal run-of-the-mill stuff now the 70s wasn't just the height of aerosmith's fame but many other rock legends as well each band sporting different fashion musical influence and stars but they all had one thing in common tons of groupies [Music] as the age of the groupie daunt upon the entertainment industry a new type of groupie would emerge quote super groupies would generate their own fame and legacies through various bizarre means for instance cynthia plastercaster an artist and the head of the group the plaster casters has her own name permanently plastered in history for creating casts of famous rock legends jimi hendrix would be one of the most famous to be casted even kiss wrote a song called plaster caster despite never being molded by cynthia i think jimi hendrix is the best one she has i've never seen the biggest yeah and just as the stuff's going to come he's got a heart and then he slept the couple responses he's got to stand up and he's got to hold his hands back here and push his balls into the cup so you can get it all there and about 30 seconds it it hardens and you can slip the cup off unless it catches and zombies pubic hairs that's what happened to jimi hendrix synthetic that happened to eddie too he was actually in pain that's the only part that might possibly be painful the whole process but the groupie era wasn't just music drugs and parties it also had a very very dark side to it filled with crimes abuse and famous rock stars who were extremely predatory some and some people didn't like us you know like led zeppelin didn't like this at all richard richard cole he took this leather strap and started feeding me and i didn't even know him they threw something in the swimming pool and ruined dollar velvet clothes they were really weird castle really i know they invited us with this hollow let's have one they invited us to a party really innocently you know i'm full know i know she likes it you know she beat her too and she loved it though i did not i went home as these stars were rising the ages of the girls they were lusting after were falling dramatically you have to use a little discretion a little discretion and as you get older you'll realize the ones you ever go out and the ones is you don't need not one i'm only 16 yeah but when i'm 23 i'll be so hip though [ __ ] stuff hanging out and the rock and roll world would get extremely dark sable star dubbed queen of the groupies was just 12 years old when she started going to rock concerts and by 14 years old she could be found at bars and nightclubs in los angeles that rockstars frequented while on tour iggy pop lead singer and creator of the stooges wrote in his song that he slept with sable when she was just a 13 year old child at the time iggy was 23 making this extremely illegal and predatory it has also been reported that david bowie and robert plant also had illegal relationships with sable when she was around 15 years old now this brings us back to stephen tyler and one of the darkest groupie stories in history a story he even details in his autobiography titled steven tyler does the noise in my head bother you published in 2011 and yes i did read every single got a page a memoir like this is is beyond cathartic you bring up things that you didn't remember happen and as soon as you do it opens up that place in your mind that you spew out onto the pages chapter six little bo peep the glitter queen and the girl in the yellow corvette is where the story begins steven starts off describing how once aerosmith became more famous girls would begin coming backstage without having to be quote coaxed steven would go on to detail that all he had to do was run backstage and tell his road manager kelly kelly the girl with the red dress in the front row have her shaved and oiled and brought to my tent according to stephen kelly always made sure the girls were in the shower by the time he got back to his room but where things really begin to get disturbing is within the next few pages of chapter six it is november 1973 and aerosmith had just performed at the paramount theater backstage the band is introduced to six as steven describes quote nubile young chicks dressed up in fantasy style costumes these young girls are part of a group called the little oral annie club this group is ran by an older woman who goes by the name strawberry fields who is the quote dead mother the book basically describes the little oral annie club as a service that provides young women to rock stars in any costume they desire to fit even the most perverted fantasies ran by an older woman who seemingly plucks young underage girls with a rough home life to serve up to these rock stars did she lead you into rock and roll or something or what she sure did she she was older than i was told me that you were 15 at the time i was 15. i wasn't allowed to go with her to a concert until my 16th birthday which was just one month before i met stephen that was was that your mother's rule or was that no it was because of the law like she would have taken me if the laws would have allowed me to go but because of the law in portland portland she was going to concerts a lot and she would take young girls with her and i was invited to go at that age i was too foolish to understand the danger that i was in i just thought it was exciting i knew that i idolized aerosmith and stephen tyler i'd seen his picture on his album cover i'd listened to the song dream on and when she told me that i could go to the aerosmith concert i thought this is fabulous i wanted to go and i hoped that i would meet stephen and when we met it was like my world just came to a stop i was young enough and and uh foolish enough to think that that this was a fortunate situation i didn't realize that i would be taking a path that would take me to the brink of death and that i would be lucky to survive julia one of the six girls introduced to aerosmith that night would wind up being stephen tyler's girlfriend for three very traumatic years directly from page 140 and 141 stephen tyler wrote she was 16 she knew how to nasty and there wasn't a hair on it with my bad self being 26 and she barely old enough to drive and sexy as hell i just fell madly in love with her in 1973 aerosmith was touring non-stop across the united states which makes having a relationship with a 16 year old high schooler extremely difficult stephen needed to come up with a solution so he could bring julia across state lines and into all the concert venues his solution was to become her legal guardian yes you heard that right stephen asked julia's mom for legal custody so he wouldn't be arrested if he took julia out of state and the mom obliged and he came to me and told me that he needed to become my legal guardian so that i could travel with him and tour i didn't really understand what all of that meant why would he do that what what was it because you were that at that point you were 16 years old is that correct yes i was barely 16. he wanted to take me on tour with him and he told me that it was illegal for me to cross state lines unless he was my guardian and i was his ward i didn't think my mother would sign the papers um but he came to me very shortly after that and he had the paper signed and i remember almost being devastated i felt kind of abandoned and and i felt i wasn't sure what it meant because i knew we weren't married but i was uh he was like a parent to me and yet we were in a relationship together steven is now in a parental role he is the legal guardian over a minor who is considered his ward as a guardian steven is supposed to make sure julia has housing that she's enrolled in school and is even in charge of her medical care however steven is taking julia from state to state in concert after concert providing her with mass amounts of drugs and is engaging in sexual acts that are disturbingly detailed in his book i i personally wonder whether um being a ward uh and having sex if that would be statutory rape or not get it from state to state i know the law they're different ages state to state but i'm sure that there were illegal things about our relationship but nobody was asking stephen those hard questions he was very wealthy and and famous people loved him everywhere we went and he just didn't get a lot of um he wasn't asked to answer for for those things steven tyler ends his story about his three-year-long relationship with julia by stating that their relationship derailed and got out of control due to drugs and after their apartment almost burned down landing julia in the hospital with smoke inhalation he realized while visiting her in the hospital it was time to set her free back to her parents but this isn't where the story ends according to julia stephen skipped a lot of details in his book and the details he left out are shocking julian never planned to come forward with her story publicly it's not something i ever expected to speak about in a public way i had been silent about it throughout my married life i have six beautiful sons and a daughter and i had never told my children about my relationship with stephen it was something that had caused me a great deal of grief so i had remained silent stephen made it public in his book his first book that he wrote but he left my name out so i felt like i didn't have to answer it in his second book when he became an american idol judge he mentioned me and after that star magazine wrote an article where they mentioned my name they used a photograph of me and my oldest son saw it read the article and recognized his mother within months of stephen obtaining custody over julia he told her he wanted a baby julia remembers they were at a hotel and right then and there he tossed her birth control out of the window and within a year julia was pregnant with steven's baby julia remembers they were both so excited and steven started talking about getting married after i became pregnant he told me that we would marry and he said that we needed to marry because of i was his ward and i had become pregnant steven took julia back home to meet his parents and grandmother in order to get their blessing from marriage but stephen's dad did not approve and neither did steven's grandmother who refused to pass her engagement ring down to the couple which is family tradition this is when julia felt her relationship with stephen shift he started to withdraw from julia more and more that's when he decided he would continue touring but this time he felt it was best to leave julia behind alone in their boston apartment and he made the decision to to go on the road and leave me behind i was very young still i was i had no car no driver's license i had dropped out of high school to tour with him so i had no education i had no money of my own and he left me to travel on the road and there was just a little bit of food in the house after he would call every day and he would just check on me see how i was doing julia was now around five or six months pregnant and was completely isolated in their apartment she wasn't receiving any prenatal care steven was not providing her with any money and now she was completely out of food julia called stephen to let him know she needed food he told her he would send his childhood friend and one of the founders of airsmith ray tabano to the apartment to take her grocery shopping the following day the last thing julia would remember is ray tabano knocking on her door next thing she knew she was waking up on the couch unable to breathe smoke was everywhere and her apartment was engulfed in flames i hadn't been out of that apartment in weeks so i was excited i remember waking up early getting ready and sitting by the window waiting for ray to come and i remember watching him walk up the stairs [Music] and i remember letting him into the apartment and i don't remember perfectly with perfect clarity everything that happened but i did wake up in a fire in a fire we did not go grocery shopping i don't know ray was gone when i woke up and the apartment was filled with smoke i was laying on a sofa and i was choking i could hardly breathe there was so much smoke i couldn't see anything in the room but smoke i stood up and i tripped over a table that was in front of the couch and i fell on the floor and on the floor there was more air it was down low and i could breathe and i made the decision uh to kind of run crawling on the floor to the front door and when i got there it was locked there were several bolts on the doors and now you would normally open that door right there i had opened it to let right in there was a key lock a deadbolt and then there was also a bar lock that would normally just slide out of the way stephen had a lot of locks on the apartment because he had kept drugs in that apartment and he wanted to have an opportunity to have the door open slowly if somebody like the police came and so there were a lot of locks on that door and the bar lock wouldn't move i couldn't get it to budge i i knew that i had to get out of the apartment very quickly so i started crawling on the floor to the back stairway there was a stairway that led down to a kitchen and there was another exit out that way out the back of the apartment yes when i got to the stairs there was smoke and flames on the stairs and i couldn't get down the stairs and i knew that i wasn't going to get out of that apartment and i remembered a public service announcement i'm rolling because i want to show you what to do if your clothes ever catch on fire don't run don't stand up at all just fall down and roll they said learn not to burn and it talked about staying down on the floor and it had said that if you're caught in a fire and you can't get out take refuge in an empty fireplace and open the flue because you can get some air there was a fireplace in our bedroom and the flu was already open when i got to it it was clean we'd never had a fire in it and i just crawled there and collapsed in that fireplace and i can remember the smoke just churning up that chimney and laying there realizing that i was about to die well what happened then you're in a fire in this apartment and did the brookline fire department respond or what what happened they must have well a very brave fireman pulled me out of that fireplace and i was near death i've read that they had to revive me i woke up in a hospital and i was okay the doctors had thought that if i survived i would be brain damaged because i had so much smoke inhalation but i was fine i was able to answer the questions how the fire that almost took julia holcomb's life came to be will forever remain a mystery the next thing julia would remember was waking up in a hospital with stephen by her side not knowing how many days had elapsed since she was rescued from the fire despite the amount of smoke julia inhaled her lungs were remarkably clear and the baby's heartbeat sounded fine according to the doctor who was treating julia she was getting stronger and stronger in the hospital over the next couple of days when stephen tyler would approach julia with an ultimatum that would change her life forever but before i could get out of that hospital stephen came to me and told me that i was going to have an abortion i wanted my baby with all my heart and i was looking forward to having my baby and i remember just telling him no that would not happen i was devastated i didn't understand how he could even talk to me about something like that as if it was decided for me i don't really know how far along i was in my pregnancy because i had never received any prenatal care stephen hadn't allowed me to have a gynecologist look at me because i was his ward and i was pregnant he didn't want me to answer questions and we began to argue he had lawyers there at the hospital he had another doctor who was there and was had told me that he said that this other doctor was going to perform the abortion that the doctor who had seen me before was not going to do it i told him no and i was also i remember telling him how could you even ask me to consider this i'm almost five months pregnant and i've just barely survived a fire this is not fair i shouldn't be asked to make such a such a serious decision in in a situation like this and his words to me were that i had to have the abortion right now where the doctors wouldn't do it because i was so far along he used all of his power and wealth to bring about that abortion the decision was either i could have that abortion or i could hit the street you know maybe my mother would take me back i didn't know at that point i was terrified i just gave in out of fear and desperation i didn't know what would happen to me and i didn't know how i would take care of a baby i had no i had no prospects i felt like i had no power i just caved in and i just said yes and that was where the worst nightmare began because that abortion was a late term saline abortion after they had given you the saline injection stephen was there beside you doing lines of cocaine while i was in labor he was doing drugs in that ho in that hospital room i remember it even offered drugs to me at one point and i was so sick and i didn't accept them i remember turning away from him just [Music] sad inside and grieving i was in labor for many hours and when the baby began to be delivered they put me under they gave me a shot and i uh went to sleep the rock and roll world is extremely dark filled with predators victimized children and ultimatums that can take a lifetime to unpack although many of the rock stars mentioned in this video went on to have fruitful careers despite the victims they left in the wake of their destruction in this day of streaming and true crime documentaries being more widespread than ever their victim stories will never be forgotten and stephen tyler has begun to lose his favorable storyline with the public but he did get his wish he will always be remembered as the true demon of screaming [Music] [Applause] you
