hi I'm Jonathan I'm Ashley and we are tiny shiny home our family of six hit the road in this lovingly renovated vintage Airstream in 2017 and spent years camping off grid all over the US before settling down on our desert Homestead in 2020 we've spent the last three years learning about solar rainwater catchment permaculture raising animals and natural building we're currently working on our biggest project today a hyper Adobe earthbag roundhouse it will serve as our family home and while we're building it we're currently still living in our Airstream now normally we would be working outside stuffing dirt in bags building our house but it rained all last night and it looks like it's going to rain all day today so we thought it would be fun if we spent the day in our tiny shiny kitchen we'll spend time prepping food for the week as well as talking about what we love about the tiny kitchen and what we hate about the tiny kitchen and our future Kitchen in our roundhouse let's get [Music] started [Music] during the winter months we like to start our day with heating up the kitchen because it's cold in here so we turn the oven on and we're going to make a nice crusty Loa bread something I love about this recipe is that it doesn't take up a lot of room in our fridge it just stays on the counter and I just make a new batch of dough when I make the bread so we'll go ahead and take this out and get it in the oven and go ahead and make our next batch of dough for [Music] tomorrow now this batch of dough has been sitting on my counter in this bowl for 24 hours I just do that every morning after I make the loaf make a next batch of dough and get it ready for the next day so let's go ahead and get this in the pan in the oven and then we'll make our next batch of dough [Music] this is important to note that this is strictly our winter routine we don't even use our oven in the summer because it just makes it way too hot in here most of our cooking is done outside in the summer months all right this oven and this cast iron pan have been preheating in here at 450 which is probably only 400° in a regular oven but we're going to pop it back in there for 40 minutes and then we take the lid off and cook it again so we'll get to that in a minute now that the bread is in there and cooking for the first 40 minutes let's go ahead and make our batch of dough for tomorrow morning it's really simple you just start with 1 and 1/2 cups of water we're going to add 2 tpoon of yeast and 2 taspo of salt to the water salt and yeast mixture we're going to add three cups of flour now you can use allpurpose but I like to use half allpurpose and half [Music] Kut now you don't need to need this but I do give it a quick little knead in the bowl just to incorporate all the flour and then we just cover it up and let it sit for 24 hours now you can get fancy with the bread by adding cubes of cheddar cheese or jalapeno or even cinnamon sugar all those are really good but we usually just keep it plain so that we can you know cut it into a slice of bread and put whatever we want on it [Music] all right our Bread's in the oven so it's time to cook some ground beef for the week but we thought while we did that we could share what we hate about this kitchen and what we love about it it's a good Tiny Kitchen yes it is um but when you've been living tiny for almost 9 years things start to get on your nerves that's true one thing that gets on our nerves about the RV is the tiny fridge you have to really pull out just about everything that's in here to get to anything so it's Tetris constantly but that is just what comes with tiny living right can I talk about the the good thing about this fridge yeah this is a DC fridge so it runs directly off of our batteries and uh as a result it's not one of the more expensive ones that run off of like propane or electric that break all the time they break all the time so we've had this for five since 2017 5 years it's still running great it's got a normal compressor in it it is great for living and traveling and it still works it still keeps things cold and Frozen and like it works really great so that's a good thing about the fruit but yeah it is a just annoying to like pull everything out to especially now that everyone's like 6 feet tall um all the kids have grown and now we're all just all hunched over trying to get in the fridge okay let's cook up some ground beef for the week [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] n [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] while that may be the only fridge inside our tiny shiny home we do have another one so we have been on our offgrid property for the last three and a half years we build out a full solar power system solar panel array is there solar shed is right there just recently and we invested in another fridge that just lives outside but it is powered by our big offgrid solar system we're going to grab some chicken and steak out of here and get it prepped for the week another reason we got this fridge is that we have done some natural building workshops here in our property when you have a bunch of people here and you're feeding them uh you need more storage space so that fridge was really helpful during our last Workshop to be able to make sure everybody got fit we actually do eat a lot of meat in this house um but one day we hope to be able to produce all of our meat we have grown our own chicken and pork uh our pigs are at the butcher right now but one day we hope to be able to do that on a larger scale but for now we're taking a break because we need to put all of our money and resource and time into building our house so let's go ahead and marinate some meat for later in the week for the chicken seasoning typically I would use avocado oil but I'm out so it all W is and we're just going to put in some paprika some garlic salt and some fajita seasoning now I will say one thing I absolutely love about this tiny kitchen is how close everything is it's literally like one step to silverware one step to the oven everything's super close and it is convenient for cooking until people start walking through the hallway and then you get really irritated but if I'm smelly one in here it's actually really [Music] nice sometimes ashy doesn't want to touch the chicken so she makes me do it how am I doing doing good than keep it up just got to get all that seasoning on there get it all nice and M this is great video this is great video all right this is a lot of ground beef it's 3 lbs with peppers and onions we're going to use this for two separate meals so we'll do tacos on one meal and spaghetti on another meal so this is just nice to be able to like grab it out of the jar and heat it up for a really quick meal we like to do it like this just having pre-cooked meat in the fridge is a good thing all right timer went off for the 40 minutes so we're going to take the lid off this pan you can see what it looks like inside we're going to put it back in without the lid for 15 minutes just need to go to the outdoor fridge please thank you sir all right next up we got to cook some steak get that in the fridge next up all right we're going to cook some steak and get that in the fridge for a quick and easy meal guys it's all about convenience these kids are hungry and if they have pre-cooked meat in the fridge they can just grab it out and make food whenever they want that's the joys about having kids that are old enough to cook it's [Music] wonderful [Music] now sometimes I do get a little frustrated that we can't like you know buy a whole cow or raise our own meat I mean could we're just we're focusing on the house right now right yeah all of our money and time and effort is going to our house build so you know you look at other homesteaders who are like raising all their meat growing all their vegetables and I would love to get to that point we're going to get there I just feel like sometimes I feel like a little bit of a failure of a homesteader because we're like you know we have to buy meat at the store like we're just not at that position right now I'm crying about this because the onions are just making me really emotion you just really want a cow don't you I do so everything just goes in stages right we've chosen to build our house naturally with Earth bags so it takes longer and also we didn't know how to build anything we moved out here so we had to take a few years to actually learn how to build stuff yeah so again we have the long-term plan we're just a quarter of the way through it well maybe even on not even a quarter well I think so I mean we have chickens that produce eggs we have goats that produce milk we have pigs that are going to produce meat we have chickens that have produced meat multiple times I think it's just important to like not always like look at other people and compare yourselves it's really hard not to do that cuz I do I do do that well the other thing too is like we are in the desert so water is at a premium it's not like we could have a cow that just goes and grazes on grass we don't have a lot of grass nope we don't have enough grass uh yeah and just even just watering the pigs this past summer was a huge like we were having to get water constantly because they use so much water um so yeah you know it's all about infrastructure and as we continue to build up our infrastructure we'll be able to add more food production yeah that's the end [Music] goal this is a really thin steak so it takes on the flavor really easily of anything you add to it I just add this I don't know if you say Kinders or Kinders I say Kinders but I heard someone else say Kinders what is it bab no idea okay well that's the favorite seasoning um just salt pepper and garlic and we add a little bit of lime juice and we reheat this it's really good with like scrambled eggs in the morning it's also just really good with rice and tacos I forgot to make the rice we got to start the [Music] rice so I actually held off on getting an instant pot for many years because everybody was talking about how great they are and I didn't want to get it because everybody else had one but I'm really glad I did because it does save a lot of time also when we were traveling we couldn't really run it also it's huge true um so really we mostly use it for rice and like if I make stock chicken stock or beef stock or whatever but mostly it's used for rice and air frying gross snack foods yeah that make you sick uh but they're so good this is going to be running off our solar power how cool is that we're running we're cooking with you know obviously gas in the oven but also we're cooking with the sun sort of sort of power sun [Music] power of course we don't have water in our birie so you know hold on we're almost ready to cook some rice now right now this is how we filter all of our drinking and cooking water but in the house we plan on having a f stage water filter system so it'll be four filters that go through like a carbon filter and I can't remember all the other micro it's so many microns filters it doesn't make sense to me but also there's a UV thing so our our water basically what I would like to say is our water is going to be super filtered in the house and we won't have to have the bird also it's important to filter the water because we live on rain water if we don't haul water right now we live on rain water because it's raining and it's wonderful but we do want to make sure that the water is super filtered and clean should I just leave this out for lunch what should I just leave this out for lunch yeah okay timer actually went off for the bread so uh I'll show you what it's supposed to look [Music] like now it's going to be really tempting to go ahead and cut this and um eat it don't wait at least an hour it's still cooking inside it needs time to you know do its thing inside but it's a it smells so good I know in a whole hour it's really hard um we might not make it an hour but we need to wait at least a little bit [Music] okay can you hear it that's why you don't cut open yet it's still making noise it means it's cooking [Music] and for the rice in the instant pot it say equal parts water and equal parts rice give it a little bit of seasoning a quick stir then pressure cook on high for 5 minutes it's almost ready we're waiting on the rice so while we're waiting on the rice let's make some noodles now I don't want you to think that I make noodles all the time cuz I don't but when I have a house I will because in the house we're going to have so much more counter space and I'm going to have noodle making parties do you want to come to my noodle making party babe um pretty sure I'll be there okay anyway I thought it would be really fun to like have noodle making parties or ravioli parties where you just like gather your friends and make a bunch of delicious food together wouldn't that be fun I think it' be [Music] fun [Music] [Music] noodles are actually a really simple thing to make it's just flour and eggs I don't even add salt because when I cook it we'll add salt to the water I'm going to put a damp towel over top and we'll come back and make the noodles [Music] later our rice is done we add a little bit of butter I like to add a lot of bit of butter um to the rice and uh we're going to break for lunch because everybody's hungry and then we're going to come back and make some [Music] cookies all right the mess from lunch has been cleaned up so we need to do the pasta then I'm going to make the boys make some cookies cuz I'm kind of tired tired of being in the [Music] kitchen hey B why don't you tell us about this cool pasta maker okay Layman's sent us this pasta maker because I really wanted to show people how to make pasta and that it can be done in a tiny kitchen and it can it is um you know it's it's a atlas pasta maker there's a bunch of different kinds so the first step is your we made the dough we let it rest yeah and then you just make it however ever th you want I usually stop on the setting number five cuz I like a thicker noodle so you're running it through multiple times and then changing the the dial to make it thinner yep that's it and then we're almost done we're going to let these sit for a little bit to get a little bit harder and then we'll cut them into smaller noodles so we could use the pasta maker and make all the noodles but I thought it might be nice to show you that you don't have to have the pasta maker just to make noodles so let's go ahead and just cut [Music] them [Music] all right all the noodles have been cut here's the problem with doing noodles in a tiny space uh I still need to make cookies and my counter is covered in noodles so we're going to have to rearrange some things so that the boys can make some cookies so these noodles are going to sit out until they're completely dry I will like toss them and turn them by tonight I should be able to put them in storage because I'm going to use them tomorrow so as long as they're in a ziplock bag overnight we'll cook them at lunch when we make [Music] spaghetti [Music] apparently we're making cookies because if you're going to prep for the whole week you got to have sweets right that's the rule that's the rule uh we have been instructed to make Texas sheet cake cookies I feel like we're on the Great British baking show and they've just lifted up The Gingham tablecloth we have very sparse instructions this should be fun all right we need one cup of butter softened hey look at that already done this a cup of butter yeah what is a cup of butter is that a cup this is a whole cup of is it yeah one cup of butter and that was one cup of sugar so what do you do you mash it up together always it's say [Music] hands it's all stuck in the thing yeah how's how you can get it out of the the Whisk so does this mean that the butter wasn't warm enough nope but means it is not mix right how are you supposed to mix it then well how are we going to do it we had a bunch of bows well we don't know where are the bowls I used them for seriously you used them for Earth and building yeah that's a that's not sanitary I didn't have any other I don't use them for cooking now they're cob B [Music] these are very confusing instructions there's no instructions just ingredient two eggs those [Music] eggs now we're Gathering the dry ingredients give us just a second we need six six t teaspoons tablespoons which one is it capital T come on six all right we're going to use the good stuff first I don't think there's gideli is always the good stuff one uh uh uh two that's uh uh uh two teaspoons baking powder one teaspoon of salt is pink salt okay that's all we have all right and then a crap ton of flour much is a crap tongue two and 2/3 cups how am I going to get 2/3 just guess no that's way too much that's two and a half two and two 2/3 is more than a half okay math um hold on chocolate chips Chuck chips we got to do Chuck chips Chu chips J CH chips chocolate chip nobody likes chocolate chips that is not true I'm just going to keep saying chocolate chips why do you need a I'm not ready to mix I'm still adding the chocolate chips I'm ready for mixing I think we should just use the rest of the bag no I don't too bad it's I mean it's like hardly any extra it's fine it's too much everything's fine we're going rogue that's Rogue you can't dude like a quarter of it like put a quarter in I don't know what that is I don't I know what okay that's fine let's start with that okay I got [Music] it put in another half sure you don't have to use it annoys you so I'm okay actually you just put the rest in it that might be a [Music] problem oh my God what are you doing look it's all clean now it's all over the kitchen now no it's not it's all in the bowl you told me to use a spoon clean that mix it in just fold it in fold it in figure it out you need you need to tap me in I'm tired of you I'm here to help is this I feel like this spatula is not the best use the wooden SP yeah no don't bring it back out you just put it in Gross rice water I'm going to wash it y'all what the heck does that say is there any point point in making the icing when the cookie is not what the heck no one can read that looks like there's two different things on top of it so everybody that's watching this can read that what does it say How poo deck Sugar puttered Sugar I'm going to pter the dooder excuse me there's literally so many extra lines on it pter the doer and the woer okay do you melt the butter or I can't help you I'm I'm hold on Jack one thing at a time one thing at a time you got to wait till we have a clean Bolding I feel like it's if it's going to be a thing this is what it should be pretty close to it's going to be a thing is what it be cookie to me are you ready wow that's a big cookie have to press that we decided not to do individual cookies like I said it's a it's a she cake that's we don't have a sheet cake pan n sure and it won't fit in our OV I think you need to use your fingers okay and get some more in there I feel like this may not be right this is not this is not a how to make a Tex she why are you pressing it in there yeah that's got don't it Hey look it's a perfect size cookie oh what about this is it supposed to be that thick I don't know I've never made supposed to do it's not a piece of to just do it however you'd like babe make a crust to the pizza yeah I'm going to make a crust it'll be like a like a stuffed crust cookie what in the world are you making so bad your recipe I don't know I'm just long for the ride yeah whatever that's fine bake it it's perfect going to burn yourself while the cookies are baking we're going to work on the icing we had to wash our One Bowl so that we could make it ready a whole another cup of butter hot butter four tablespoons of what cocoa powder how many tablespoons six six don't do that and we need five of these five [Music] cups we're improvising it says five cups but we're doing we're on seven out of 10 half cups oh my gosh I don't know what that is all right let's check the cookie tape it's done yep time wow what timing it is pretty big [Music] so I think it still needs a lot longer okay [Music] cookie is finished or should I say cake is it cake or is it a cake is it cake is it cake got to wait for it to cool down before I put the icing on are you going to put sprinkles on it no no definitely not absolutely not sprinkles are for a baby it's a long time but I remember it well just like the photo we keep on sh this tiny kitchen changes with every season in the winter the oven gets a lot of use but in the summer most of our cooking and baking is done outside in the spring when our goats are in milk there's lots of cheese making going on buckets of whey in the whe and an abundance of eggs on the counter each season has its challenges but it's like that in every kitchen no matter how big or small but somehow in all the right places you make me feel like enough I'm
