[Music] welcome back to another Dome episode we have a lot of projects going on here on our off-grid desert Homestead many of them focused on earthbag and natural building a couple of months ago we ventured into the world of super Adobe domes and started building a 9-t circular Dome Home structure that our oldest daughter adeli claimed as her own after building the structure with an incredible group of Workshop attendees we've spent the last couple of months racing against winter temperatures to get the outside covered adding doors and windows and applying multiple coats of cement based plaster laugh and stucco this brings us to the final step in completing the exterior waterproofing so here's the deal um this weekend we've got some weather coming in maybe some snow yeah which is cool but not great for the Dome um so our goal is to get the first coat of elastomeric on and hopefully it'll cure before the weather comes in but before we do that what do we have to do so much prep work let's get [Music] started the and we're looking at the stars tonight first up we have to clean the bottles a little bit better this side actually did get cleaned when we installed all the stucco however not everything else did so we're just going to wipe them down and then I can paint on our mask and peel from Jasco we paint that on the bottles so that we can just paint over everything we will be taping off the Windows though there's a lot of prep work so it's going to be a [Music] while these bottles did not get cleaned off during the plastering or stucking process so can't see uh got this squeezed on the outdoor shower I'm going to use this try to clean off the outside of those bottles uh so then we can paint the the no stick stuff [Music] [Applause] [Music] on [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] how's it going over here D new rule when you uh put bottles in you got to wipe them off while you do it that's how it's gone this step always takes longer than we think but it's so important to making sure this whole elastomeric thing works taping around the windows and doors but still allowing the paint to cover and waterproof the edges should keep the water from getting in and rotting out frames or causing [Music] damage [Music] [Applause] [Music] what is that noise it's Cloud digging a little [Music] everything is is taped and sealed so we're going to get the the sprayer prepped and ready to go and we're just going to try to do this real quick the nice thing about not having a roof so you don't have to worry about trying to be careful up near the roof beams and going back and painting by hand later like we should just be able just spray the whole thing really [Music] [Music] quick [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] one thing we should mention here is that since we went for that hand applied look for the stucco there are lots of tiny cavities and uneven surfaces spraying in multiple directions and putting on multiple coats is really the only way to make sure you get everything [Applause] covered [Music] [Applause] [Music] um Cloud laid on the Dome so he's covered in elastomeric paint and he's afraid of the hose so this should be fun [Music] [Music] well we got most of the paint off of cloud but ended up having to give his frosted tips a trim he wasn't happy about it but you know what it's going to grow back [Music] oh [Music] o we have a painted Dome yeah we do it's real white yep and this is base coat this is not final coat at all now you want to talk about why we do that uh you can okay so um the reason that we paint the base coat with like super bright white is just because this is more like a roofing elastomeric and it's cheaper uh it's a lot cheaper than the tinted one which is what you put on like the outside outside so you have to have two coats of elastomeric to waterproof it and get your warranty uh so we found it's better to start with the cheap stuff the cheap stuff it's made just for you know roofs or whatever spray it on real thick get like every nook and cranny you can and then come back with your more expensive color version so hopefully you don't spend as much can we talk about how many gallons of paint this took the Dome uh we got one five gallon bucket because we thought that's great that'll get it it's tiny yeah uh no three 15 gallons uh the the surface area on this Dome is deceptively more than it looks like you've got the steps and the bench and the fireplace and it's just a and there's no roof there's a dome like it just you know usually we just go straight up and stop and so this keeps going and it goes 360° yeah it's a lot of surface space so I don't know how many of the tinted ones we're going to need I think two it's so expensive so also this stuff is a lot thicker so it's a little bit harder to put on but it it covers it a lot better so the the tinted one usually goes on smoother um and doesn't use as much paint yeah because it's spraying better so the I mean the big question is are we going to paint this this winter or we going wait until it warms back up it just it really depends on the weather our weather Windows also I really hope it works out to paint it because I don't want to stare at a white for three months it's so that's ridiculous anyway guys that is it because the Dome has been painted yeah so we got weather coming in we'll see how it does and then hopefully we'll paint it before Springtime Here's [Music] Hope [Music] today's the last day you're going to see this Dome white yeah so we have a I feel like we're always there's always a window we're like trying to fit things anyway it's going to be cold and snowy M uh we got a nice day today we have all the paint we going to painted and then that way we can take all the stuff off all the trimming and the plastic and then we can focus on the inside yeah we need to get started ad picked out a really great color and I want to say thank you to Anna the manager at Home Depot on Speedway and ton who uh recognized us and sent us the sweetest message on this by G it is really nice yeah thank you so thank you all right ready to get started yes adeli has chosen the color Moroccan henna it's a deep brownish orange that we can already tell is going to be beautiful during the sunsets and sunrises here on our desert [Music] Homestead [Music] you can see the white elasta also gives us a clear Baseline to see exactly where we painted the tinted color we found that letting it dry a bit let you see any spots you've missed so you can come back for a second [Music] pass yum man don't even think about got it you cannot come over here don't touch the down don't touch it down now that our paint has been dried for several days it is time to remove the paint from the bottles and make everything look beautiful we've already taken off the plastic on the door and the two windows just bottles left I think I'm going to show Adelie how to do it since this is her dome she can do it okay ADI first up um we want to keep the paint on the bottom of these and we just want to cut around the very edge of the bottle it's going to be some uh very detailed work but you're good at that so we'll start cutting once you've gone all the way around it should just peel right off now one thing I don't like about this is that you can see the white of our base coat under here so we are going to get a fine paintbrush next time we're in town and uh paint all of that the darker color of our final coat where you don't see the [Music] white [Music] we talked about how perfect this color is like just imagine it in the spring with cactus blooming all around it it is like the perfect shade of that burnt terra cotta hna color it's henna Moroccan hen Moroccan henna [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] and just like that we have a painted Dome and just in time too because uh like we've said about 20 times in this video winter is coming uh rain too and it could be a really rainy winter so this would be a great way to test the waterproofness of this Dome before we actually move into it but speaking of moving into it there's a few things we need to do first so next up is electrical and so much plaster then we can move to the floor then we get to get to the fun part which is building custom some furniture yeah and we do have uh a concrete step we got to pour here uh so there's still a few things those are future videos though you're just going to have to be patient and wait for us to get to it cuz like you know we have a few other things going on here in the homestead yeah like our house also guys do you see these names scrolling right here I see them well these are just some of our tiny shiny homies who help support us every month they
