i just made this video and i was like i don't think i like it it's just kind of like oh it was all over the place i was trying to be a new year's kind of situation so i'll try it again here we go [Music] hi my name is father mike schmitz and this is ascension presents so at the end of any year i think it's really helpful it's really it's really good to look back to stop right now in the present and look back to the past and also at the beginning of a new year to stop in the present and look forward to the future now a couple things about this this is not only a new year thing or an older thing so if you're listening to this or watching this at another time of the season you can be at the end of a day at the end of the week in fact saint ignatius of loyola one of the things he would invite his his jesuits to do is twice a day every day to stop and to look back over the course of their day however much of the day had passed and asked the question god where were you where were you in the blessings where were you in places where you invited me to say yes to you and i said no to you where were you speaking to me and i was deaf to you where were you speaking to me and i heard your voice basically god where were you such a good way to to go about living because it's living thoughtfully but here's the thing we can sometimes make the mistake of falling into the trap of either living in the past or living in fear of the future right so we don't actually live in the moment we look back with the past and we either either long for those glory days or we are so sorrowful for those those you know broken days or we can look forward to the future and live in fear of the future or live with longing for the future right it's that sense of like i'm not living now that's why i think it's really helpful to actually take intentional time to stop and say i'm going to use this time to look back over the past whether that's a day a week a year and say ask the question god where were you where were those places that were winds they were huge there were blessings where were those places where you called me to yourself and i said no where you called me out of myself and i said no where you called me to speak and i was silent where you called me to be silent and i spoke to be able to recognize in the past the blessings as well as the things i need to repent of so to do that intentionally though the task of here and now is to look back in the past and to recognize where god was present or where i said no to him that's different than living in the past that's different than not being present so another thing look forward and say okay lord those things coming what do i fear those things coming what do i what do i hope for and to invite god into those kind of things now the reality of course is we don't live in the future we don't live in the past why because they're gone we can't do anything about them can't do anything about them and it's one of those things that it reminds me of confession okay here's maybe a long walk for a short drink of water but it reminds me of confession when we go to confession one of the things we bring to the lord is we bring in our sins obviously right we confess our sins to the lord through the priest and we receive god's forgiveness that's awesome but it's also we realize confession is a sacrament of healing we don't just have to only bring our sins we can also bring our wounds to the lord now here's what happens we look at our past look at the future look at our sins look at our wounds and we give them to god now when you hear that phrase give them to god i think a lot of us we think of this we think of well i give them to him and he takes them away i give my wounds to god he takes him away i give my sins to god he takes him away i get my past to god takes awaken my future to god takes it away that's not the same thing when i say we surrender something to god whether that's surrendering your past or surrendering your fear or longing hope for the future surrendering your sins or surrendering your wounds what we're doing is we're giving them to him right the wounds the sins to god and say you're they're yours god you get to be the lord of them you get to have dominion over my sins and when god has dominion over your sins he can forgive them he can he can destroy them when god has dominion over your wounds you might still be wounded but now he's the lord of your wounds when you surrender like lord i just i there's something about me something about my heart that i just hate i put it under your lordship i put it under your dominion you might still have that but now it's his it's under his lordship it's under his dominion when you look at your past and say okay this last year has been like this highs and lows and everything in between but i placed this last year lord under your dominion under your lordship and it's his now and same thing with the fears of the future and longing hope for the future who place them under his lordship under his dominion say lord it's yours now this is what it is to have jesus as the lord of our life to say there's no part of my life even even my sins no part of my life even my wounds that i haven't surrendered to him this is what you get to do in confession when you name those sins when you even name those wounds you're surrendering them to the lord and saying lord they're yours you can have them but he doesn't always always take them away sometimes he lets us live in them while he becomes the lord of them because he's the lord of your life when i look in the past and i can't do anything about it lord you have dominion over that well look at the future i can't do anything about it lord you have dominion over that i look at my sins and i can't do anything to forgive myself but he can lord you have dominion over that and when i look at my wounds there's brokenness in my own heart broken into my own life i say lord i surrender it to you you're the lord of my wounds you're the lord of my brokenness you have dominion over that you're the lord of my life you might not take it away but you get to be the lord of all of it anyways we're almost here at ascension presents my name is father mike god bless [Music] you
