the only laptop maker that has even come close to Apple in build quality and design in my opinion is Microsoft and now I have the new 15-inch Microsoft Surface laptop this is the Seventh Generation Microsoft Surface laptop the 15-in like I said and it comes with the brand new Snapdragon X Elite chip inside with 16 GB memory and 512 GB of storage and it comes in at $1,499 this isn't Microsoft's first attempt at putting arm-based chips inside their devices but the first couple of times didn't really go so great but somehow I think that this version is going to be a bit different so let's go ahead and get this guy unboxed set it up and get a first look at the brand new 15in Microsoft Surface laptop packaging this year looks to be super minimalist which is really nice to see just one little strip on the bottom or on the side and then the whole box just kind of unfolds on top we have the 15-in surface laptop we'll put that to the side for just a second and see what else we got and here we have some stuff we don't care about we have the Microsoft Surface charger and power cord and well that is it that is one of the most minimal unboxings that I've ever seen and the main event of course is the laptop itself let's see if we can peel this without breaking it because for whatever reason I like to keep the packaging just like it came and there it is the beautiful new Surface laptop 7 15inch version and this guy this guy feels good without even opening this thing this feels like a premium device like it is solid it's not creaky it doesn't like it just feels good and this black color looks really really nice and I was really curious how it looked compared to the space black Apple products on the iPad and MacBooks that Apple's had lately and it's actually not that far off it is a little bit darker than the space black iPad here but both of them look really nice on the Le hand side we do have a microphone Jack a usba a port and two USB 4 ports on the right side we do have the connection for the Microsoft Surface power adapter and a Micro SD card slot I guess it's nice that they put an SD card slot on the device at all because the 13-in version doesn't get one but I would much prefer a full-size SD card slot to the micro so if you use micro SD card slots a lot let me know below so let's open it up and see what we get and look at that right away it turns on so very similar to a Macbook it just automatically turns on when you open the lid if the device has been powered off and you can see that there's a slightly newer design to this version of the surface laptop the bezels are smaller and it just man like I said this looks and feels already like a premium device this is a super clean design I love the matte look of everything I love the size of the trackpad it's not oversized like even like the 15 and 16inch MacBook Pro and air the trackpads are a little bit too big I think that this is probably the right size trackpad for me at least so now we can go ahead and start the setup here it's asking for country and region United States United States input for the keyboard no I don't want to add a second keyboard layout now I need to connect to Wi-Fi so I'll do that real quick and this does have Wi-Fi 7 so if you have a Wi-Fi 7 access point then you know you get better speeds accept the license agreement now I get to name it and I always choose a very unique name for my devices perfect while it's setting up or rebooting or whatever it's doing I really can't get over just the cleanliness of the design of this laptop like it looks very much like a MacBook Air and you know what it doesn't have like every other PC stickers all over the damn place that right there almost makes it worth the extra cost of the service devices over some of the others even if it doesn't have an OLED display or some of the other things that others might have but it does have a really nice display it does have a high refresh rate 120 HZ display it does get up to 600 nits and it is over 200 pixels per inch even though it's not the fanciest display it still looks like a really nice display and now it wants to do a update that's going to take around 30 minutes and it's going to walk me through a couple of features of the new laptop but of course the main new feature the co-pilot recall feature that Microsoft announced a couple of weeks ago or a couple months ago is not actually shipping on these devices because there was a big uproar about privacy of that feature so they basically had to remove it from these devices so you can't even use it and eventually it will come to the device but who knows when but it means that the brand new flagship feature that was supposed to be in here to take advantage of the Brand new 45 trillion operations per second npu inside the Snapdragon processor is just not here sure sure there are some lesser AI features built in you still get the co-pilot key and you still get your built-in chatbot and things like that but the flagship feature the thing that was the big announcement of these devices is just not here but that's okay because what I want from a Windows laptop when I actually need to use Windows is a beautiful design and this has it I want a good trackpad and so far with very little testing it feels pretty good I want a processor that performs well that doesn't sound like a jet engine when the fans kick in I want a beautiful screen where I never see pixels and I want a battery that actually lasts all day and Microsoft is making that promise with these new service devices so one once the setup finishes I'll get in there and we'll take a look around and see what we can see with the updates now complete we can continue the setup experience and sign into Microsoft so we'll go ahead and sign in to my Microsoft account and now we can set up Windows hello to use the camera to go ahead and sign in similar to face ID but different I guess so I'm just going to look at the camera wow and that is incredibly fast to set up asking about privacy settings do I want to use location find my device do I want to send diagnostic data and do I want to have a unique advertising ID no I don't want that one and I don't want tailored experiences other than that I'll go ahead and accept and here it's telling us that that recall feature that I was just telling you about is coming soon and it is actually not on the laptop on day one next now it's asking if I want to restore information from a backup of another PC and yeah I'll go ahead and do that we'll just and make the setup a little bit quicker I guess as far as maybe some settings so restore from this PC we'll see what happens now it's asking just generally how you use your computer so that it can basically tailor ads and other crap to you so we'll just go ahead skip that for now you can use your Android phone from your PC but I'm not going to set that up right now we'll Skip it's letting me know that I have access to all of Microsoft's apps because I do subscribe to Microsoft 365 I understand I got it I get a free subscription to Xbox game pass for a little bit we'll go and Skip for now and there we are we are fully set up and inside the new Microsoft Surface laptop 7 now that we're set up we can test just a couple of things with the hardware so first off the keyboard I really like the Apple magic keyboard on Apple's devices whether it's the iPad magic keyboard the laptops or even the external magic keyboards they all feel really good to me so that's kind of my Benchmark for finding a laptop keyboard that I like and when I type on this it feels very very familiar like I don't have to think about where things are or how big they are or how far the key travel is like it all just feels very similar to a MacBook Pro slightly different but very very similar it almost feels like it has just a little bit more force or pressure required to push the keys than what I'm used to but that's not something that is going to be a big deal or a hindrance in Daily work when it comes to the trackpad I'm really trying to remember previous surface devices I don't have any with me anymore but I think maybe this is the first time that the trackpad is able to click anywhere it's not the diving board style where you can only push on one end this one actually allows you to click anywhere you want to just like on a MacBook which is the way to do trackpads like you shouldn't have to think about where you're putting your fingers or where you're clicking but by default it seems like it's a little bit harder to push than what I'm used to so let's see if there's any settings to change that and Yep looks like there is so right here you have click sensitivity and looks like like you can do low medium or high and when you go to High you have to push just a little bit harder on the trackpad to get it to click not like it's hard to push but you just have to push a little bit harder and I think I like the low that is definitely what I'm used to on the Mac I think that's how I have my MacBook set as well on the lower setting you also have the option to go ahead and adjust tap to click or three finger gestures or four finger gestures and we'll just go ahead and leave those as they are for now one of the big new additions to keyboard on Microsoft laptops this year is the new co-pilot button so you have direct access to a chatbot built right into the keyboard so let's go ahead and press that and see what we get so we get a prompt for Microsoft co-pilot hey good morning let's get started so I guess like any other chatbot we can just ask it whatever let's say how do I make a good pizza I'm sure it won't say anything about glue like Google does and it's delivering a response right now so it's giv me all the instructions starting with a dough making sauce toppings cheese and how to bake the pizza great so it works what else can we do let's say make an image of a girl holding a globe I don't know that's weird see what it gives us and now it's reaching out to Dolly I believe to create this so yeah right here it says powered by Dolly E3 and that's going to take a few moments to get a couple of options and there we go we have a couple of options of a girl holding a globe we can select one and I think we can download the full size image or make some changes to it that's pretty cool I mean this is fully AI generated and it looks pretty neat let's see if it knows anything about the computer now let's say uh how no start a new one how do I turn off Wi-Fi see if it gives me any information about this computer specifically so using the keyboard nope nothing about this keyboard specifically or this computer specifically just general Windows settings information and hey I guess I get a little video on how to do it as well so I guess that can be helpful so you can use co-pilot to make things answer questions or even show you how to do something that's pretty nice a number of other AI tools should be coming to Windows soon like in paint you should be able to do full image generation in here as well which I don't see any options for it yet and if you want to do screenshots it's supposed to be able to automatically redact text and other things so if you take a screenshot you should be able to have it use AI to remove things but I'm not seeing any option to do that so it looks like a lot of these AI tools are not actually available yet but when it comes to the camera there are AI features built into the new camera and well first off the video it looks a little weird why balance is off but I will definitely do a full comparison against the 15-in MacBook Air and the 14-inch MacBook Pro to see kind of what the differences are between that and this I did call the 15-inch MacBook Air the one to get so I'm really curious how this fully compares to that computer so let's see what effects are available looks like we have automatic framing which I think is going to be like center stage on Mac and iPad where the camera moves around to kind of keep you in frame and yep it's doing that sure eye contact what is that eye contact helps you appear to be looking directly at the camera so it's going to use AI to make my eyes look at the camera so let's see how that works turn that on there we go now it's on so now I'm looking at the bottom of the screen is it looking at the camera I can't tell I'm looking down here on the screen now I'm looking over here what's it doing left I don't know I don't know if it's working you tell me turn those off and then we have background effects kind of background effects background blur so now it's using AI to do this effect which it's doing some weird things around my head that's okay let's try portrait blur yeah it's okay I wouldn't say it's great but whatever it's AI woo and this is taken directly from the camera on the new Surface laptop so I background effect portrait blur on here's standard blur and how does the microphone sound does the microphone sound clear and can you understand me or does it sound terrible let me know down below and now because it is a new CPU in this machine let's see just some basic Benchmark results of this new CPU and compare it against a couple other machines that I have so we'll go ahead and run the CPU Benchmark now and there we have it for the 10 core Snapdragon X Elite CPU we're getting a single core score of 2266 and multicore of 13,9 that's a pretty good multi-core score now if we go ahead and look at my state-of-the-art Benchmark tracking tool we can see that the M1 Max like the M1 Macintosh computers the Mac Mini the MacBook Air with the M1 get a faster single core score with over 2300 compared to 2200 on the surface 7 but the multicore score of 13,000 is obviously much higher than the M1 with 8,000 uh we have to go to looks like the M1 Max had a score of 12,000 and we have to go all the way to the M2 Max MacBook Pro which had a score of 14,140 so that beat it so overall that score is really good the M3 Pro with its uh let's see how many core CPU did it have the M3 pro has a 12 core CPU and that got a score of 15,25 so I mean this is competing multis score wise or multi-core wise with the highest end MacBook Pros but the single core score is definitely lacking a little bit for some reason so the single core score of the new M4 iPad Pro is around 3700 compared to again 2,200 on the surface 7 oh and there is one other thing I did want to test out on here real quick and that is the translation layer so just like how Apple has Rosetta built into Mac OS to be able to translate Intel stuff for Apple silicon Microsoft has their new translation layer called prism which does the same translation layer from Intel over to arm so let's see how it works out in a game that needs to be translated and that is shadow of the Tomb Raider because why not and because it has a benchmark built into the tool so normally when I do these settings I go ahead and set the graphics to medium and display around 720p and that gives me a good Baseline to be able to compare machines so I'm going to go ahead and run this Benchmark and we'll see what kind of average frames per second we get on this so I get a playable 34 frames per second average on this surface laptop 7 compared to about 37 on the M2 MacBook Air and about 61 on the M3 MacBook Air so overall for their first step out of the gate without any updates like their prism translation there is actually doing pretty good so there are a lot more Benchmark tests to come and I'll definitely be doing a very full review and comparison compared to the 15-in MacBook Air and probably the 14-in MacBook Pro so definitely hit subscribe if you want to see those videos also let me know down below what questions you have about the new Surface laptop 7 my first impressions are it looks pretty nice and I can't wait to spend a lot more time with it but definitely let me know down below what you want to know about it but hit the Thumbs Up Button if you like this video and want more of it and I'll see you next time
