we live in the age of the metroidvania it's one of action gaming's oldest genres but it doesn't seem like the flow of Metroid and Castlevania inspired action platformers is gonna slow down anytime soon but of course we wouldn't have any of those games if it weren't for Super Metroid one of the most influential games of all time it also happens to be a game that I know like the back of my hand which means I am never not in the mood to recompete this bad boy it's time to escape from the surface of a hostile planet and save alien life once again when I read complete Super Metroid for the now I'm only doing two shows one is happening on August 2nd in New Jersey as per as very parched specifically and the other is on August 4th I'm going to be at a Moroccan in Los Angeles California so yeah come check out the shows links for those are also in the description box down below you want to see the shows it'd mean a lot to me come out and say hello we're gonna have a good old time it's really hard to talk about Super Metroid at this point in my career because there's been so many times where I've guest-starred with other YouTube youtubers on their channels or I've done it on Super beer Bros my let's play channel where I've beaten the game randomized I did a Link to the Past cross Super Metroid randomizer I even done Super Metroid rotated I know this game inside and out is one of the first episodes we covered here on the show it actually got me my stardom on screwattack.com back when that was still a thing so I guess what I'm saying is I love Super Metroid so I'm going to love it again for the 19 thousand times I can complete this game almost every week so that said let's do it one more time [Music] some games are only worth completing once before moving on to something new but some of them launch themselves into your brain calling you back to them over and over again and while everyone has that reaction to different games Super Metroid is that game for me which means I've completed it a bunch of times in a bunch of different ways in fact early in the life of the completionist show I completed Super Metroid for ScrewAttack with the goal of 100% in it in under three hours which I did but I also learned an important lesson - what it means to be a completionist in the original episode of the show I completed the game on screwattack.com without saving the aliens there are some aliens near the end that can be rescued and I took a lot of flak from neglecting to do so that's mostly because I didn't know they were there but I know this game even better now than I did then and nothing will slip through my grasp that experience also taught me just how beloved this series is that it would cause so many people to yell at me I get it though it's actually kind of crazy to consider that after Super Metroid we went eight years without a Metroid game due to the lack of sales but between smash brothers and the Metroid Prime series from the 2000s Samus has reclaimed her place as the video game icon that she's always been in my heart when it comes to item completion Super Metroid is all about getting everything so naturally I'll have to get 100% of the items in this game this will not be a problem considering I am an expert in this game when it comes to Super Metroid there are three total endings some of which will take longer to complete than others I do want to point out that item completion does not affect the endings only meeting the time requirements does but either way we got to be 100% boys up in this although one of the endings requires you to take longer than 10 hours to complete the game and I know it's so well that it might take more effort to spend that much time wandering around than it will to beat the game quickly but that longer playthrough will at least give me a chance to mess around with the various ways to sequence break the game let's get weird baby and last of course I'm gonna rescue the aliens during the escape sequence at the very end I solemnly swear that those little alien babies will make it home safe and sound please don't get mad at me again Internet I don't think I can take it look there's a genre out there in the world called Metroidvania so it goes without saying that this series is influential but influential doesn't always mean good so it's possible that Super Metroid would lose some of its appeal as time has gone on and more games have taken a crack at this formula but while I can't speak for the NES game or the gameboy game that preceded it that's very much not the case with Super Metroid the game holds up it's still one of the best Metroidvania 's and still one of my favorite games of all time even after getting familiar with every single inch of its creepy alien caverns I'm still not sick of it it's got cool moments a fun and simple story and all of a plasma blast and screwattack and mayhem you could hope for Super Metroid picks up right after the events of Metroid 2 and Samus has just dropped off a baby Metroid at the Sarris Space Station to be studied the first two games are all about how dangerous the Metroid species is and features the badass mercenary Sam is putting the beat down on some space pirates who want to breed and control Metroid's to rule the universe not cool space pirates not cool so it seems like samus's mission is over but after leaving Cera station she immediately gets a distress call from them and if you've ever gotten a call from a place you just left you know that pretty much it's never a good thing and sure enough the space pirates are back including their leader Ridley who is basically a pterodactyl cranked up to 11 there's a reason that dude's an iconic villain so when he flees with the baby Metroid to the surface of the planet zebus where the first game took place Samus has no choice but to follow him get the metro baby back and make her stance against space piracy even clearer this time her since then it's bad you guys don't be a space pirate kids yeah I know it sounds super cool at all but still don't do it the narrative here isn't hugely complex but it's filled with fun little details and moments Ridley and Mother Brain are still memorable villains to this day and even though the game returns to the same planet from the first game it brings in a bunch of new locations on zabis that sit it apart everything about it is a classic there are some twists and turns of the very end but mostly it's straightforward which doesn't mean bad sometimes simplicity is just where the story needs look at Mad Max fury road for instance the plot of that movie is Drive in a straight line then drive back and it's perfect so go to Planet kill bad guys will do just fine it's not the reason that anyone's playing the game but it never wants two tracks from the experience Super Metroid features an open-world with a map and it was one of the first games to do it right the world is gated into areas by the abilities you pick up along the way which allow you to progress standard stuff even though there are ways to sequence break the game and get in certain areas before it wants you to but the abilities are all worth getting anyway not just because they allow you to progress but because they're super fun we take it for granted as part of SAMHSA's design but rolling up into a ball and dropping bombs on fools is badass there's a good balance between weapon upgrades and mobility enhancements so you can jump roll and blast your way through zebus in a whole bunch of different ways it doesn't just feel like a Metroid game but like the quintessential Metroid game the woman would show two aliens if they landed on earth and said what are the Metroid games like for some reason this goes for the areas - there are a variety of environments and every zone feels like it was designed with care while Super Metroid can't live up to the visuals of some of the modern Metroidvania it's set a standard for designing this sort of world that most of the other games are still trying to live up to and that design works with the music to create a really honest outerspace vibe that emphasizes how lonely and scary space really is the score even incorporates a chorus and everyone knows there's nothing creepier than a chorus well except for a chorus of children that's how you know something really is scary but my point is that this game puts a lot of effort into its vibe and atmosphere and while it's hard to notice that when you're blasting through the game in under three hours it definitely had an impact on me when I first played it the world of Super Metroid is gross and weird and I mean that in a good way like for example the bosses they're not only huge but the design immediately unsettles you before the fight even starts let's take a look at crocomire one of my favorite boss fights just look at this guy what's wrong with him if it wasn't my job to kick his ass I'd want to stop for a chat and make sure he's okay my favorite fight has got to be the one with dragon who looks like a dragon that God genetically spliced into a rotten cucumber I love that you have options in this fight if you don't feel like doing it the old-fashioned way you can use electricity from a nearby turret to finish him off quickly this is great if you're trying to blow through the game as fast as possible and as someone's for this game a lot of times I do not have the time for this guy's shenanigans and while that's something that's built into the game I was also able to cut down time with some sequence breaking insanity so just a general thing I am obsessed with speedrunning this game i watch speedrunners all the time I look at the strats i do randomizers all the time and one of the things I taught myself was the Mach ball trick the Mach ball trick essentially makes you turn into a ball and maintain your speed so you can sequence break some parts of the game early and get a bunch of power-ups meaning you don't need the super dash early on to get some of these things but skipping the upgrades does cut down on your options and this game gives you plenty of options well I enjoy messing with the recommended order just to mix things up and make the game more exciting for myself if you're someone who hasn't played this game dozens and dozens of times there's plenty to keep you entertained like missiles everyone likes missiles and if you like turning into a ball just wait until you can turn into a ball that can jump it all just feels right and even though there were no metroid games for eight years after this one I still think this is the game that cemented Metroid's place in gaming culture and set the standard for Metroidvania s-- yes Castlevania is the other half of that equation but I still feel like a lot of that genres development can be traced back to this game specifically including speedruns which are a piece of cake here if you know the game as well as I do as previously mentioned there are three different end screens for finishing the game under three hours finishing the game between three to ten hours and another for taking longer than ten hours so for those playthroughs I messed around a little bit but there wasn't enough to kill that much time so I mostly just what the game kind of just sit there but on all three playthroughs I made sure to get all the items and rescue the aliens at the very end because I'm still haunted by the specter of my past mistakes even with all of this it probably won't be long again before I play Super Metroid I literally play this game once a week usually randomized or rotated or both hell all you even play the link to the past cross Super Metroid randomizer where you have to complete both of those games and the items are cross randomized for both when it games this good it just keeps pulling you back in again and again [Music] if you play Super Metroid in the normal intended sequence there's a pretty steady stream of new abilities so as far as unlockables go you at least feel like Samus is being rewarded for doing Samus type stuff with more and more Sam as he type things to do and speaking of Samus each of the games ending showcases a different image of her after a screen that says 100% completion which let me say I love because about it's my life choices there's a shot of Samus who will be dressed differently depending on how long it took for you to complete the game she might be in her full armor if you took too long or have part of her face revealed if you played a little more quickly but if you beat the game in under three hours she ditches her armor entirely and is standing there in a black bikini well I can understand watching a glimpse at what Samus looks like without the armor a little bit of a weird choice of the game's big completion bonuses here look at some Boop's lastly there's the thing I got shoot out for for the first time I play Super Metroid to the show the aliens waiting to be rescued at the very end of the game if you save them then during the final screen you can see a little second ship leaving the surface of zebus imply that they got away safely so ray when I read completed Super Metroid there were zero deaths one full complete playthrough with three endings achieved now this was super easy as I just let the timer run out after I did my first under 3 hour run I collected every item possible in the game which ended up getting the access to 230 missiles 50 super missiles 50 power bombs 14 energy tanks 4 reserve tanks and 16 different items that only made me more powerful about 35 hours of total playtime but if I'm being honest it's only really about 2 hours and 45 minutes I just ran my clock up on the game to get those extra endings and one last time we're gonna put this all to rest I saved the animals goddammit stop telling me I didn't completing Super Metroid for the one zillion time was a pleasure it was quick it was easy and it reminded me why this is one of my favourite games of all time now I just have to find a new way to play it like hanging upside down over a shark tank or something sounds awful do that also how much is a shark tank online let's shark tank purchase let's see you you can't buy one unless you're like an aquarium it looks like I can buy a bunch of shark tank gear but not an actual shark tank so that's super metroid it's obvious that i love this game it's obvious that a massive fan of what the metriod franchise has become at this point of my career i have played some versions of metroid 1 and metroid 2 but at the end of the day if you are like i have never played a metroid game before I have to severely recommend Super Metroid for the Super Nintendo data-mine guys I still get this game my
