[Music] hey everybody welcome back to hard-working man my name is heath and this is my wife rachel today we're going to answer the question you've all been wondering about the samurai what are we going to do with all the sawdust we reclaim this is all black locust sawdust which burns at a higher btu so if i'm going to make some fire starters which is what we're doing today i thought let's make it out of some of the highest btu would available and see if that's different than the ones you can buy commercially made that are made with pine and cheap soft woods see if the burn times longer if it burns hotter i'll try different types i'll try it with black locust ash oak you know maybe some poplar different stuff pine see what burns the best maybe it's a combination but for now i'm gonna make some fire starters with the black locust sawdust that we reclaimed from the samurai just got some organic soy wax for making candles i picked up off amazon this is two pounds i figure it's gonna be about an ounce of wax per two ounce cup because we're gonna fill them almost full with sawdust we'll get that up to 165 degrees here in this little pot with just a coleman camp stove and fill the cups almost full with the sawdust pour the wax in stir it up just with this little well i guess giant q-tip that i have i use for cleaning guns and whatnot we're just going to use the wood end of it to make sure that the wax gets mixed in with the sawdust good and then we'll use one tonight for our campfire and see how it burns i'm gonna throw these in at my roadside stands as free fire starter light them up with one match one lighter and your fire will go i'm also gonna put them in with my face cords and my cord deliveries it's just something to set myself apart from the competition if it takes an ounce of wax per cup my cost per unit is about 20 cents so throwing four or five in with a 20 stack cost me an extra buck to set myself apart one per bundle 20 cents a bundle and they can light it with a match instead of having to worry about kindling and all that so just something i'm gonna try always trying something different i haven't seen this before maybe it's been done maybe it hasn't but we're bringing it to you now on hard working man let's make some fire starters okay now we're gonna pour these uh wax beads into this container okay now we're gonna set it on the flame and we're gonna wait for it to melt down and we have a thermometer that will let us know when it's the right temperature while that's melting down we're going to take these little paper cups we're going to fill them almost to the rim leaving just enough room for the wax to get poured in and totally fill it up and we're gonna leave enough so that we can light the rim because that's what catches the fire so probably like that all right as the wax is melting down i just occasionally take the pot shake it around a little bit once it gets all liquid we'll start checking it with the thermometer we want it to be about 160 to 165 degrees before we pour it when we do that it's gonna go into the sawdust nicely and it also permeates those paper cups a little bit making it so that if they're damp or wet they're still going to light because it's going to be wax all the sawdust from the samurai 700 making the firewood was just captured in that ibc tote lid that i placed under the tractor and then i put a hardware cloth over a five gallon bucket and dumped it into it that way there's no big chunks in it no large debris again there's no oil from the chainsaw bar oil it's easier to collect the sawdust because it's just one collection point it shoots out the soda shoe to the samurai 700 so i don't have to let it shoot all over the ground and then go clean it up later it gives me a nice clean sawdust to make a nice organic fire starter these can be used for campfires for inside your house for home heating they can be used to light your charcoal grill i i did away with propane years ago i run the hardwood charcoal and it's a world of difference in flavor you can either use the electric charcoal starters you can use the chimneys for starting your charcoal or you can use one of these hard-working man fire starters as you can see it's really nice and fine it's not dirty it's very light and perfect for filling these fire starters they're ready to be poured all right it's time to check and see what our temps at yep we're good time to pour okay now when we pour it in we have 32 cups here and we have 32 ounces of wax we want to make sure we get about one ounce of wax per cup so that we can know our per cup cost you all right so now we have this big giant q-tip where we're just going to use the wooden end of it to check to see how much wax actually saturated all of the sawdust and if we need to add any more wax so like this this is perfect this has plenty enough no these are good this one might use a little more okay so here's an example this one here this is dry we have it too dry over here so we're gonna have to add more wax it looks like this one is the same but like this one very saturated we're good there so it's not an exact science you just kind of you know see what happened the first go and just fill in again like this one's a little dry we'll add more to a couple of these all right now we're just going to top off the ones that were a little low that had some dry spots and then when we're done we're just going to let it cool down and they'll be ready to go it's okay if you're a little messy i'm a little messy yep and there we go so now we just let them sit until they get hard and that's about it okay so here's the finished product as you can see it's nice and hard um we have found that if you put your wax cups into your fridge like your beer fridge whatever if you have room for um it stops the wax from continuing to permeate and saturate these paper cups so that you're not left with this huge ring of wax pooled at the bottom um we've already checked that they're thoroughly covered in wax before we popped it into the fridge so we know that everything is good from top to bottom um this way it's also water resistant throughout so you're good to go uh okay so now we're just gonna do a burn test we're not starting our fire for the night but we just wanna see how long this will burn for so [Music] [Applause] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] all right we are five minutes into the burn on this fire starter and as you can see with this black locust it's over 600 degrees so i'm gonna check with different types of wood and see what burns the hottest the longest and the best [Music] all right we're 10 minutes in and we're getting over 700 degrees with the black locust fire starter we'll compare this to some commercial units off amazon just to see how it compares to what's most likely soft wood and possibly inferior wax see how the hard-working man premium fire starter compares to the competition [Music] [Music] all right we're at 15 minute burn time i know a lot of the ones i saw on amazon said up to a 15 minute burn time and it looks like we're about halfway through one of the hard-working man fire starters [Music] all right we've reached the 20-minute mark i think we're getting towards the end about 20 minutes not bad if your fire's not burning by 20 minutes it's not gonna burn and if you're running hard-working man firewood this thing's blazing by now [Music] [Music] all right you can see it's coming down to an end we're about to hit the 25 minute mark on this homemade fire starter hard working man not bad seeing the competition says up to 15 and we just hit 25 with one of our first attempts again this is black locust organic soy wax and a paper cup so it's safe for starting your barbecue grills your campfires your home fires still burning not a lot of heat left probably 25 minutes if your fire's not going it's not gonna go [Music] all right that's about a wrap 26 minutes and 30 seconds it's still burning but there's not much flame left i said we'll try different combinations of wood different amounts of wax we'll figure it all out but this is going to go in with the hard-working man firewood little value-add let's make our wood stand out from the competition i'll get some signs made up free fire starters included officially went out at 26 minutes and 44 seconds [Music] thanks for tuning in hard-working man hope you guys enjoyed the show three two one okay now we're gonna pour these you
