scan the audience god is so good to us we have dealt yeah amen talk back to me we have dealt with the hustle and bustle of this last week and we have the audacity to come back into the house of prayer and give god glory honor and praise why because god is just good and he is worthy to be praised listen to this in the book of lamentations the third chapter it is of the lord's mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions his love failed not they are new somebody help me every morning great is thy faithfulness y'all got to say amen right there let us go into worship and magnify the lord let us extol him let's give him adoration on this lord's day we're in the hands of dr rito and the worship team oh foreign hey is we is uh he is foreign today is is is victory victory today [Music] victory is mine victory is mine god is a good god and the scripture says god is our refuge and strength he's a very present help in time of trouble that's the kind of god we serve amen it's prayer time you know things happen when you pray but before i go any further let's just slip my mind oh i like to acknowledge some bereavement on last week we know that brother james uh bradford uh his brother passed on we'd like to acknowledge him and his family today and we have a sister uh charlene mcgowan and sister uh lord's lord their mother passed and we like to acknowledge them today you know there's one thing about pain we all do pain and suffering and bereavement but when someone remember you after the service is over that's what really counts so we're here this morning we'll let you know we're still here for you and we're still praying for you god is a good god he's a merciful god and i can testify that he's done great things for me so i'm here i'm standing i'm a witness but i know prayer works you know well in acts that when paul and sila prayed at midnight things happen so they tell me that's not not a time to pray you don't have to work wait till you get to church to pray the other guy was lying on his deathbed he prayed he turned to the wall and he prayed you don't have to wait the sunday to pray you can pray any time anywhere and church i want to tell you and all those are watching out there today is there ever time when we need the praise right now because when you leave home you don't know you're going to come back these days so we're here to pray and this is the time we are going to be on one accord amen so god bless you and now i'm going after you take your posture of prayer and that's another thing you don't have to wait till you get to church is to be standing in the pro you can sit down you can kneel you know jesus was known by his prayer life so as a christian we should be known by our prayer life our scripture reading today psalm 85 starting with the fifth verse for thou lord are good and ready to forgive and please and mercy unto all them may call upon thee he said give hear o lord in other words hear me lord unto my prayer and attend to the voice of my supplication and the last verse it said in the day of my trouble i would call upon do you for thou will answer me no prayer go unanswered let us bow every father we come once again this morning first of all thanking you for waking us up thanking you for bringing us all here together and lord we know that it was you that woke us up and not the alarm clock we just want to say thank you oh lord as we have gathered here to praise and worship you and those that are tuned in at home or wherever they might be we want to say lord we know that you are omnipotent god and i'm the present god you're everywhere at the same time so lord we're calling upon you right now we need you jesus for we are going to look to the hills from will come on our help lord we know our help come from you and nobody else oh lord we don't look to washington for our help oh lord we look to you jesus oh lord we need you lord we we want to thank you for so much because lord we're living in some dangers and fearful times lord there's a lot of hell handling these lord i can't stand here name them all but you know those that are suffering you know what people are going through oh lord we are here under this pandemic that don't seem to want to go away oh lord we have an earthquakes we're having floods we're having fires and i can't say that enough lord but lord you are in control of everything but there's nothing too hard for you and we're calling upon you right now deliver us through whatever we might be going through lord we might be having some finance difficulties whatever it might be lord you have the power to take us through it lord we just want to say thank you lord lord and we want to thank you for the things that we take for granted like the blessing our belongs oh lord then we can remember those that line in the hospital that can't hardly breathe lord we want to thank you for the food that we have to eat but don't forget those that don't have nothing to eat lord we thank you for the roof over our head but let us not forget those in louisiana that lost to everything we want to say thank you jesus thank you for everything that you've done for us you are a merciful god you're a good god lord just help us to hold on because we know there's a brighter day ahead we know that sun is shining behind the cloud but lord don't remove our problem just help us through them and lord when we take it through when you take us through we be so effort to give you uh all the praise and all the glory and all the honor we just thank you jesus and lord as i pray here this morning those that are the sound of my wheat boy they might be at home they might be sent here in the audience lord you know what's on each and every heart let them remember that you love us all all the same because you came down and you died for all not for some but for all and as the scripture said for god so loved the world you love us all lord just help us through these times lord we we just thank you for everything you've done lord we need you thank you for being a god that never changed you're saying yesterday today and forevermore thank you for where you brought us from right now and then lord we know that you're going to take it the rest of the way but you didn't bring us this further leave us you never abandon us we just thank you jesus bless this congregation bless those at home we need you lord we ask that you continue to look down here upon us in our honor in our country lord we are so divided oh lord it's time for us to to to tear down the wall of petition the color of our skin how much money we have for we are your children we just thank you jesus lord now we're here to praise and to worship you why because you're worthy to be praised you're worthy to be worshiped because you are the creator and we are the christian of creatures we need you jesus help us to hold out because he said you're coming back you're coming back oh lord we just wanted to just thank you for not leaving us alone thank you for when you got about that grave that you're sending back into heaven oh lord and you sitting on the right hand of the father in a place of authority but you said you never leave us alone and then lord you send the holy spirit back and we thank you for the holy spirit right now now lord as we go forth in this service it's all about you it's not about me it's not about anyone else this is all about you because you're the one who died and we just said thank you lord we ask you all in the strong and mighty name of jesus christ who is our lord and our savior we do pray always let the words of my mouth and the meditation of all our hearts be accepted in our sight oh lord our strength and our redeemer in jesus name amen [Music] keeper night in the darkness [Music] we give god all praise on this morning [Music] thank you for joining us uh one another we are joined here in our this holy worship place we thank the lord for those who are coming in and we welcome you i'm standing at this period in our worship to not detract from the worship but to do what we call a pastoral emphasis when when it's time to get up we go ahead and we share and i i think there are a few things that are appropriate for us to share in light of all that is ongoing i'm going to we've got one thing of celebratory uh emphasis and i'm going to start with that i'm going to ask sister hunter to come and help me uh with that piece of it and then i'll share the components that i have and we'll get out of the way so we can continue to worship the lord uh sister hunter where are you there you are share with us will you we're going to be talking about grandparents today yes sir good morning to everybody good morning giving our praise is to god to pastor hall our senior pastor dr hall god bless reverend connor our assistant pastor to all of our associate members and everybody assembled this is an exciting day i get excited about this day and i was at first i was like we need to skip that day because we already did mother's day father's day and all that other stuff and i'm like nah i don't think they're to go over to google pastor hall so we better do this the right way right regina and we got grandparents out there we want uh first of all to say happy happy happy grandparents day to all of our grandparents will you stand on your feet so we can give you some love of the grandparents and all of those that are listening listening my live stream just give yourself a shout out high five and everything we want to thank god for you you may be seated we do have uh some little tokens for you as you leave out today and uh as i was thinking about grandparents they said that there are over like 70 million plus grandparents in our country and then the sad party said it's about 66 percent of our grandparents have never ever celebrated grandparents day so i said nah that's not good so here bethany we want our grandparents to know that we love you i know pastor hall and i know reverend hunter have a special special place in their hearts for their grandparents because they have their same kids their grandparents played a very important role in their lives and my grandmother and grandfather played an important role in my life and i'm trying to follow in their footsteps also and i know we have a lot of seasoned grandparents but they also said in the in our country the youngest grandparents now like at the age of 48. our oldest grandparent mother hoskins is 93 92. she would be celebrating her birthday on september 24th so we know that we have some seasoned grandparents and we have some that are just starting out but i thought i wanted to uh usually on second sundays we have our churchill and this is the year we don't have our youth with us so i asked cook i said cookie can i get morgan to come and sing a song special song for our grandparents because i just you know i just think we need to hear from at least one of our youth on today so i'm going to ask morgan to come she's going to come and she's going to sing a special song for the grandparents she was sitting up here all the morning and i'll research she's actually want to go back out there and sit down come on morgan but i just think uh you know i like old songs myself i love old old hymns and old songs and i said okay morgan i know you're little but you can do this song for us okay so morgan is going to come and sing walk with me lord walk with me because i know our grandparents want them to walk with them he's been walking with some of them a long long long time okay [Music] [Music] walk with [Music] walk me me [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] my name is um [Music] my [Music] god me [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] me want jesus to walk with me [Music] nobody [Music] when i was in traffic [Applause] [Music] in here today his grandparents day today happy grandparents to all of our grandparents happy grandparents today [Music] happy grandparents day amen now if that baby can open her mouth and give the lord praise i know we can open our mouth and give god praise in his house today and baby came out of the pew out of the chairs and came on up amen looking at all those faces or nun faces and mass faces and she came through the crowd rather timidly amen she got up and opened her mouth i said she opened her mouth and sing praises to god [Music] that's important amen [Music] now satan is using all of the disunity in our nation to do a lot of harm and he's using that disunity as a conduit to separate us from god and we're taking the bait have you seen all this stuff happening people going crazy on airplanes they got to duct tape people to their seat [Music] folk in restaurants masked and unmasked unmasked upset at the mask and sneezing and coughing all over the food [Music] what's that about by the way but satan is using that disunity in our nation to separate us from god and that means separate us from his values he is also using it to dismantle families are y'all aware have y'all been looking at what's happening and people don't even know what's happening to them he's using it to divide us one from another have you been observing this stuff how can you not know that satan is behind the scene [Music] all of this issue about covet there's covet misinformation which is putting our babies at risk how can you not know that this there's there's a supernatural force behind that we have people that's confusing politics with godly righteousness to the point where it's jeopardizing the lives of our babies and we can't see that i think the bible calls that blind [Music] we are experiencing unparalleled wickedness in our one nation under god and satan is laughing at us every time we talk about one nation under god every time our flag waves every time we pull out money that says in god we trust satan laughs at us [Music] if in our communities our influence circle we have issues or we have questions about covet then we need to talk to someone that we trust and that knows something about what's going on it makes no sense for a group of folk in their little circle don't know anything trying to inform each other it's time to be wise because it's not just about us this thing has evolved into the point where our babies are being jeopardized and is foolishness behind it and we call it reasonableness of our rights and so it's time to pray people the word of god says if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves in other words that means get down off your high horse start talking about you and what you want and which will humble themselves and pray seek his face [Music] turn from our own wickedness turn from our wicked way he says then somebody wanted to know when all is going to be over he said then we'll hear from heaven has anybody read this bible it's important our lives are at stake let's care about each other here are the last little things i have deacon toggles reminded us in our consecration today that this is prostate awareness month uh the african-american community is the most at-risk community brothers for prostate disease those who love the men in your life encourage them to regularly go and get checkups have that prostate checked we want you around a long time and i sure want to be here get those numbers psa as far as covet we want to continue to be aware of the cdc protocol get your vaccinations those who are mass continue to change those things out with the sanitizer thank you deacon howard we have plenty of sanitizer we passed out a lot of it we've got those little bottles and today after worship uh if you need some sanitizer just when you're leaving drive by our additional parking area over there the deacons will be there to fill you up they'll take care of you they'll give you some additional sanitizer why because we care we want you to stay safe we want you to be safe lastly and certainly not least there's i can't cover it all but we've had a number of families who've experienced death in their families thank you reverend stewart on yesterday there were several funeral services our hearts continue to bend toward those families sister mcgowan charlene mcgowan and sister lloyd and the death of their mom and so our hearts bend toward them brother branford his brother our hearts been toward him uh the sun saturday before that brother kirk they were out of town and uh our hearts bend even toward louisiana trying to make sure that those folk up there in the midst of all of that they are suffering deaths in their families so the message is simple let's let's care about one another if we start doing that all that disunity and all that crazy stuff if we turn from our wicked ways and we humble ourself we have the audacity to believe god you know what god says he'll do he says then will we hear from heaven and he'll heal the land i just am country enough to believe him [Music] and so i want you to believe him as well trust god today now let's worship the lord give him praise in his house [Music] let the church say amen let the church say amen now say amen for those who did not want to say amen [Music] i am so excited to be in the lord's house on the lord's day before the lord's people anybody else just excited to be in the lord's house on the last day before the lord's people we can really stay excited because it's offering time i said it's offering time the time we give back to the lord that which belongs to him everything we have everything we are belongs to the lord and we are just part of the management team i pray and ask god that he would grow us in stewardship that we will know the wisdom and responsibilities to give our resources to god that's the definition of stewardship i'll read scripture we have our containers to my left your right my right your left that you can go ahead and utilize at any time as a matter of fact as soon as you get in the church you can do it then you don't have to wait to bombard because we're still following the center for these control their protocol so we want to make sure everybody stays safe and sound amen i'll read scripture then i'll ask a sage to go to the throne of grace and pray for us i'll ask reverend the blood to lead us to the throne of grace is that all right it is written in the wreck of authority and indicated in god's word second corinthians chapter nine starting at verse six and completing at verse nine but this i say he would so sparingly shall also reap sparingly and he which sow it bountifully shall also reap bountifully every man according his purpose in his heart so let him guilt not grudgingly or of necessity for god loveth a cheerful giver and god is able to make all grace abound towards you and he's always having all sufficiencies in all things may you abound in every good work as it is written he dispersed abroad and he had given to the poor his righteousness remained it forever there are four ways that we give here at bethany baptist church you can give in person which we'll do today though that are viewing by live stream you can give by mail you can mail we ask that you could put a check not cash in the mail and you can mail it to 7304 homestead road 770 there's also a way you can go to your bank and you can set up an auto draft for they'll automatically take out your tithes and your offering you can do that through your bank and then for all of us who are high tech there's our mobile app you can go to our cash app you can go to bethany 1925 and you can fill it out that way so there are plenty of ways to give now i'll actually open the blog to lead us in prayer [Music] thank you so much god is a good god yeah i said god is a good guy yes sir you know uh i'm where i'm supposed to be on the lord's day yeah and i'm his child that's right and he says both blessed to give and to receive you know i was listening yesterday all of the september 11th and i remember where i was yesterday 20 years ago i remember when president kennedy got shot where i was that day sometimes god be helped by remembrance you know y'all know god the god i serve is bigger than september 11. the god i say is bigger than september 11. yeah god is a big god and he's everywhere at the same time oh god is the good god god i thought how we grateful we are just [Music] anyway thank you lord for all you've done in our life you've been good to us how grateful we are thank you lord thank you lord all you've done in our life bless us now and bless pastor hall this morning oh [Music] in jesus name amen amen [Music] [Music] he is i am he's [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] oh [Music] anybody glad that god gives us a second chance he gives us a third chance [Music] i have gone contrary to your will [Music] [Music] seems like i make them every day but [Music] another chance i'm glad i serve the god of another chance i'm gonna say that again i have gone contrary to your will and to your way and i've made mistakes seems like i make them every day but god saw in me just what i could be i'm glad i served i'm glad [Music] [Music] some people say that they serve the god of a second chance but since i messed that one up so long ago i'm glad he forgives me again [Music] just what i could be the god of another chance i'm glad i serve the god of another chance [Music] you forgave me [Music] you forgave me lord but is [Music] foreign please forgive me thank you me [Music] i'm glad i served the god of the love a chance i'm glad i serve the god of another chance i'm glad i served the god of another the chance of another chance [Music] [Music] pastor how just one moment i've never been to your house but i know what goes on there you steady you've never stepped in this pulp here without having something to tell us and i want to talk i want to pray for this little just a little bit this morning yes sir god i paul come in that ominous manner that i know how no shape bomb or passion trying to send you some sincere and number of thanks for the many blessings you've already bestowed upon you've been good to us lord you've been good thank you son you woke me up this morning yeah in my right mind let me greet maturity thank you lord thank you here we are at the house of prayer one more time lord i belong to you i'm your child i'm in your house on your day thank you now my lord is preaching time but i pray for pastor hall that you hold him in your hand let him preach let me hear you oh thank you lord thank you lord you've been good to us when we come down from this place we want to know we've been in your presence oh thank you now have your way have your way in this place we'll give you the glory we'll give you the glory glory we're giving our honor in jesus name in jesus name [Music] god is such an awesome god i want to thank reverend de blasio for a powerful prayer anytime somebody is willing to pray for you unselfishly we ought to have enough sense to say thank you since you took the time to bring that bible with you why don't you take that bible i want you to hold it high like you're not ashamed of it and i want you to repeat after me this is my bible it does not merely contain the word of god it is the word of god and i believe god i believe god is who he says he is i believe god can do what he says he can do i believe that i am who god says that i am and i believe i can do what god says i can do i can do all things through christ who strengthens me now you've got to believe that it can't just be something you learn like an easter speech or a christmas speech and you rattle off at the mouth and then once church is over it's over you've got to believe it and you've got to live it i want to share with you on this lord's day from one of the old testament prophets the times in which we live are so similar that the contrast is almost unbearable i want to come from micah micah is what they call a minor prophet micah chapter six he's he's he's tucked in there in the midst of all them big boys like isaiah yeah mine is in the king james version and that's uh what i'm showing on the screen there micah chapter 6 beginning at the very first verse be reading through the eighth you're looking for him in your bible it's m-i-c-a-h micah you're welcome deep in micah chapter six there you will find these words follow me on the screen if you don't have yours yet and then uh you'll have time to find it hear ye now what the lord says what does he say arise contend thou before the mountains and let the heels hear your voice hear ye o mountain the lord's controversy and your strong foundations of the earth for the lord has a controversy with his people and he will plead with israel oh my people what have i done unto you and wherein have i worried you testify against me this is god speaking through the prophet for i brought thee up out of the land of egypt in other words you say i've been good to you and redeemed you out of the house of servants and i sent before thee moses aaron and miriam he said i sent you leaders to serve in the midst of you look at that fifth verse oh my people remember now what balak king of moab consulted and what balaam the son of beor answered him from sidon unto gilgal that ye may know the righteousness of the lord he says i've been with you when there were some dark days wherewith shall i come before the lord and bow myself before the high god shall i come before him with burnt offerings with calves of a year old will the lord be pleased with thousands of rams or with ten thousands of rivers of oil he said i'm not just looking for your offering talk to me shall i give my firstborn for my transgression the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul he has shown the old man what is good and what does the lord require of you but to do justly to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy god i want to read verse 8 one more time because that's going to be the cusp upon which i'm going to speak he says he has showed the old man what is good in other words god hasn't kept anything from us he showed us what is the godly thing to do and what does the lord require of you he says but to do justly in other words be just love mercy mercy is not giving someone what they deserve it's the flip side of grace and he said to walk humbly with thy god we're going to stop there i want to speak to you today from this subject the requirements of real religion the requirements of real religion thank you ushers brother miller thank you man i see you on your post today now at the outset i want to say to you that religion does not replace salvation as a matter of fact religion is the result simply of your belief so you can have some bad religion are you all walking with me but the result of salvation is real religion and the word of god tells us that salvation produces what micah calls real religion in other words there's a certain behavior because that's what religion is it's about your practice based on your belief micah says that even in the old testament there are some things that god expects of his people in the congressional library in washington dc in our nation's capital there's an engraving placard it's placed there and it was suggested way back in our history by a man named charles w elliott now if you went to harvard university you might know that name because charles elliott was the president of harvard university when he suggested that a very famous engraving be placed in the library of congress and here's what it said nothing in the history of literature is more worthy than these words from the prophet micah that's what he that's what he wrote he went on his grave and then he penned the words that he imprinted there were the words from what the prophet micah recorded in micah chapter 6 verse 8. and he put it back up here's what's there in the library of congress to this day he has showed the old man what is good and what does the lord require of thee what does he require but to do justly to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy god now i say again this scripture is engraved in the library of congress to this very day if you travel to washington dc and take a tour which includes the congressional library you would see the words of god as recorded by the prophet micah still there now why are these so important and why would uh the president of harvard university recommend well in harvard's history harvard used to be the place that prepared preachers that was its initial mandate it was a seminary it prepared the men of god for preaching and doing work in the vineyard for almighty god did you know that it's known as a place for preparing lawyers today wow what a fall huh the prophet these words were what we would call a high water mark for micah's prophecy because he's not a what we would call a big time prophet you know we we like to categorize things and people micah however was called the heralder of the mourn in other words micah is what you would call the preacher of sadness he's in the category with jeremiah but he's not considered one of the big boys jeremiah is micah preached against the sins and injustice of his time in an effort to turn the people's heart back to a loving god god used this little prophet to work in the street to tell people that god still loved them but they got to change because if they represent god if they truly represent him the way they were reflecting their religion or their behavior did not reflect real religion in today's society we would call micah a preacher activist michael would have been the martin luther king of his time yeah micah also prophesied and foretold the coming of the messiah did you know that he's a little preacher he only has seven little chapters in his prophecy recordings and none of his chapters are long chapters scripture tells us that king herod was so alarmed and disturbed when the wise men came seeking the newborn king of the jews herod asked the chief priest in the scribe remember when he was upset so he asked the chief peace and described where christ should be born remember that and their answer is recorded in matthew chapter 2 verses 4 and 5. look at it it's on the screen in matthew chapter 2 verses 4 and 5 it says and when he had gathered all the chief priests talking about herod and scribes of the people together he demanded of them where christ should be born and they said unto him here's their answer in bethlehem of judea for thus it is written by the prophet well what prophet was he talking about in other words when king herod asked for an answer to his question the chief priests and scribes didn't scratch their head and come up with an answer to please the king they quoted the prophecy of a specific prophet and that prophet was micah the chief priest and scribes quoted micah chapter 5 verse 2 as the proof for the truth to herod's question in micah 5 and 2 here's what micah says from the mouth of god he says but thou bethlehem ephrath though thou be little among the thousands of judae yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in israel whose goings forth have been from of old from everlasting that's a quote about the messiah he says he's supposed to come out of bethlehem and that's how the priest the high priest and the scribes knew to answer herod's question that where is he coming from where he's coming from bethlehem he's going to be in judea many modern day scholars have dismissed micah as just a little lowly minor prophet some called him a prophet with little value i read that by one scholar i don't think he's read very much he's supposed to be just a poor preacher who should have been happy to be listed among the big boys like isaiah and jeremiah ezekiel daniel and the like you know micah supposed to be seen and just not heard he's just but i appeal to you in this message to take a second look at this little preacher prophet because michael was different michael wasn't a pushover and micah didn't stay in a corner and keep his mouth shut unlike isaiah michael was not born of royal birth isaiah was isaiah was born in the palace of kings michael was born among the common folk in other words michael was from the ghetto he was given by god to be a preacher to and for the people one who was crying out against the oppression of the poor and he was fighting their battles i tell you he was the one who was the king of his day his work was carried out across the reigns of several kings in other words while he was prophesying there were several kings that came and went jotham ahaz and hezekiah to name a few these were all kings of judah but they were also kings that ruled during a transitional period during the time of judah a time that experienced great revival in judah and then ushering in a period of disrespect and immorality in the face of god just like our time now as god's people turned their back on god it was micah who was in the street telling them this is what god says so micah preached micah prophesied during the revival years of hezekiah but also primarily during the declining and wicked days during the decline of the time of hezekiah you know hezekiah don't you remember hezekiah you know hezekiah was the king that was sick unto death god sent isaiah to tell him to get his affairs in order because he would die and not live has anybody read this bible michael was prophesying during the same time period i guess things were so bad during that time period that when you saw the preacher coming to your house you didn't know whether he was coming to pray for you or to deliver god's message of bad news god sent isaiah to the king's palace to tell hezekiah to pack his little grip up because he was scheduled to check out but micah had other pressing matters god sent micah into the streets to warn the people not to play with god during the same time frame are y'all listening to me micah's book of prophecy has seven chapters that scholars usually divide into three parts chapters one through three deals with the social condition it tells you what was going on in the land during micah's time he points out the parallel with conditions in samaria before it fell in 722 bc so what was going on in samaria and all of that before uh all was going on is now going on in judah or judea in chapters one through three record all of that chapters four through five show the pitiful state of the nation how it had declined how what was glorious now looked pitiful and sad how there was distrust from house to house with the people scattered as the scripture say like a shepherd-less sheep but in god's divine providence god himself would raise up a shepherd to save his lost people this is what michael is saying in other words god would send the messiah and that's what chapter 5 verse 2 says when we just read it the third part is chapter 6 and 7. in chapter six and seven micah talks about the nature of real religion he said every religion ain't real religion and while god's purpose can be hindered by human foolishness god is neither frustrated nor defeated because god and righteousness always prevails so chapter 6 is what i want you to look at this morning and that's why our reading comes from verses 1 through 8 in micah chapter 6 because micah talks about the requirements for real religion in verses one through five we hear god protesting now you you you've got to really get get into this because god takes time to protest with his people god simply says what have i done to you now when i read this piece i mean i lost it because god doesn't have to defend himself god god doesn't have to say what's wrong baby god doesn't have to deal with our foolishness that's what michael said he said but god takes time he takes time he's god god can speak and everything in his way blow away god can easily start over he really doesn't need us have you heard can anybody has anybody read this bible but michael says god takes the time to protest with his people god calls the mountains to witness in other words god says i'm going to call my creation to to witness on this thing i got to have a talk with my people he calls on the mountains to witness he petitions history to recall his goodness to the people has anybody read this bible his creation and his miracles among the people ought to have resulted in gratitude and obedience but because it didn't god said what did i do to you but his people are so unthankful the result is unthankfulness they're ungodly even though god has been a good god and so god has to simply inquire what did i do that was so wrong to you in verse six and seven there's a question that's raised that is really their the objection to god's charges in other words the prophet stands for sharing the word of god and then he says here's how the people say that they feel the people felt that they had worshiped faithfully in other words we still go to church welcome here they had they had an argument set for god they say look i don't know what you're talking about we don't know why you're crying god we still goes to church we goals we still praise god has anybody read this bible we don't know why you mad at us god we still shows up we still bring our offering the people say we worship faithfully but their observance had been formal in other words they formally came but it wasn't from the heart and the prophet said and god is not pleased the people wanted to know what would please god then if their sabbath days and their feasts were not satisfying to him in verse 8 the prophet gives god's answer to disobedient humanity both then and now in micah 6 and 8 once again look at it he has showed you oh man what is good and what does the lord require of you but to do justly to love mercy and to walk humbly before that god he said if you really my people if you really my people here's how you act has anybody i mean i just want to know has anybody read in this bible we live in some crazy times has anybody we let satan kick us up and down the freeway and then show up on sunday talking about we highly favored and love the lord church god's people are in trouble with god and they ignorantly think that church as usual should be enough for god god's people are running around talking about name it and claim it when god blessed us we failed to raise our children under his authority we won't bring them to sunday school but we will buy them 500 sneakers and take them to t-ball practice on sundays we buy skybox tickets to take our family to see pro sports and buildings that just a few decades ago people didn't even want us in the building and now there we are smiling and grinning in folks face talk to me if you can we dismiss god and think god ought to be happy god has made it possible for us to go into fortune 500 companies make hundreds of thousands of dollars and we arrogantly think god ought to be pleased because we give a few dollars every year to his worship our politics are corrupt we live in a time where even god's people embrace a lie the lie of the day and feel good about it and our worship has eroded into nothing more than a political rat race where poor people are expendable and the preacher knows more about his political party favorites than he knows about the word of god the prophet's question is not what can i get from god that's not what micah hollers in the streets of the ghetto but what does god require of us has anybody read this and what's going out in our 21st century is what can i get from god that's not the question god has always been good to us he's always been good he's always he's always been good he has always given us more than we were willing to deserve but the question of the day is what does god require what does god require of me well micah says that there are three things that god requires of his people if we are to experience real religion firstly he says that real religion requires justice in our dealing when we deal with one another and with him it requires justice be just be righteous in other words don't be bent by the demand of the day i'm not going to become a liar because my neighbor's a liar i'm not going to be an obstacle because everybody else is an obstacle he says deal justly i'm not going to become dishonest just to get an extra nickel he says real religion requires justice in our dealings secondly he says real religion requires love for mercy and kindness because kindness always rise with mercy listen one of the things that god's people have forgotten is that you don't have to when people are not nice or kind to you you don't have to fight back with them with unkindness as the people of god we're always to be kind we're always to get what he said love mercy we're to love it and if we love it and see love is something you give if you love mercy mercy is not god giving you what you don't deserve that's grace mercy is not giving someone what they do deserve somebody say they deserve a good cussing out well you're not the one to do it talk to me has anybody read this bible they don't deserve for me to be kind really it's not about them deserving it we're kind because god is kind to us we love mercy because god is mercy so real religion requires love for mercy and kindness but here's number three real religion requires a genuine experience with god in our hearts micah says we're to walk humbly with our god micah's threefold answer to the question spells out the requirements for real religion micah said real religion begins with dealing with the corruption in the streets okay you missed that there's corruption in our streets every day everywhere all day long micah says real religion begins with dealing with the corruption in the streets where injustice is unrestrained you think that what's going on in our streets is new it's not new then he moves from the common arena of the outer bounds of brutal misconduct and bad behavior against the poor and towards the center of god's people the place of worship so look at micah's message this morning as we pray to see god's requirement for real religion take root in our hearts number one i'll deal with these one by one and as i said then i'll leave you alone and we can go we can get our sanitizer across the street and we can go finish our cooking real religion requires dealing justly or requires justice in our dealings look back at our uh theme scripture matt micah 6 and 8. that's the first part he says what does the lord require thee but to do justly that's this first one you see our lives have got to demonstrate the character of god and all of our relationships with other people in other words if i'm going to be in business i can't be a dishonest businessman and not only that i have to be careful about who i go in business with but not only that just because somebody else is is uh beating somebody in the street out of their money or unkind to them that don't mean that i'm supposed to do that there must be no inconsistency between our inner life and our open profession of faith between our worship of god in the church and our dealing with our fellow man in the marketplace if i'm holy and here when you see me in the grocery store you ought to still see the same steve hall if i'm in another state and we run across each other i ought to be the same steve hall and i expect you to be the same you cannot lie cheat and steal during the week and then show up on sunday shouting holy holy holy lord god almighty who is and he was and is to come amen both isaiah and amos who were contemporaries of micah tell us that religion that does not produce exalted beliefs and standards of morality in the individual and social justice and righteousness in society is not real genuine genuine religion and social injustice nevermore uh injustice never marched together so you can't say that you're a child of god and you're part of injustice our world needs to hear that to be quite honest that's exactly what got dr martin luther king jr killed because the world wanted religion and just social injustice to be okay with one another and he wasn't the message we needed in michael's day was that same message that we need today when judges were brought with bribes that was happening in micah's day when merchants used two sets of weights have you read this bible they used two sets of weights they used one set of weight when they were selling somebody something and when they had to pay for something they used another set of weights which meant they didn't have to pay as much i wish i when the rich stole from the poor but they were devout in religious observances that was happening in michael's day but it's happening today also this is not religion but a tacky immoral burlesque show attempting to pass for the real thing micah's message is greatly needed in our world today also in the mid 20 20th century there was a great upsurge in church attendance in the united states the mid 20th century that would have been the 1950s and that in that area a lot of scholars have called this a revival period in american history and our history books record that it was a time of great revival i've personally had the privilege of teaching church history in seminary and i don't believe that this increase in church attendance during the mid 1900s can qualify as a true revival that that's that's hall a revival is about people getting right with god in a dramatic way where men learn to truly walk with god that that's that's how i see and think of a revival when the numbers increased in the mid 20th century the people came but their hearts didn't you see i personally believe that the people came because of the suffering they were going through but they that suffering and their togetherness never really took all of them to the throne of god it simply created a unity for them and an outlet for the outpouring of their emotion this is the time period when prosperity preaching and word faith and naming the claim it came of age this is not what god calls real religion and unfortunately this increase in numbers did not result in a higher standard of morality knowing a deeper sense of social ethics it just didn't happen and it didn't happen and there's proof because when you look at social ethics or and you look at uh higher standards of morality and you look at that time period you see that it continued the numbers in church went up but morality and everything continued to go down i'm just saying you see real religion requires justice in our dealings secondly real religion requires love for mercy and kindness micah began by dealing with the injustice in the street you know he said that we got to get that stuff straight the justice and just the injustice of the street that justice has to meet it and and now he begins to move toward the center or the middle he tells us that justice in our outward dealings can only come from when it's uh based on love uh for justice and mercy and kindness in our hearts in other words that stuff won't get right until mercy and kindness in our hearts show forward look at what he says in that sixth and eighth again that's the second part he says but to do justly and to what love mercy he didn't say and to have mercy he said but to love mercy you see god's people have got to love mercy not not ask for mercy but they've got to love mercy what does that mean preacher in other words god's mercy has got to emanate from his people so that it rolls into the street in other words you're going to run into some folk that don't deserve your time you're going to run into folk that don't deserve anything you know what i'm talking about some of them living in our house and sleeping in our beds some you don't even have to go far to find them but as a child of god the bible says we've got to love mercy and mercy always rise with kindness has anybody read this bible did you see that we are to love mercy mercy god is not giving us what we do deserve not giving us what we do deserve not giving us what we do today what do we deserve we deserve hell we don't deserve a blessing somebody say i'm not that bad not that good either because the standard is god and if god was looking for us to come to his standard all of us would be messed up that's what micah is trying to tell him because god says what did i do to you that's what keeps ringing in my and that's what drew me to this verse this passage because to see god take time to protest with his people by saying what did i do to you have you ever had somebody just i mean being ugly and nasty to you and you just you don't know where it's coming from and you just say what did i what did i do to you well i mean but what that's what god is doing what did i do to you when we do god good by people does not mean that they deserve it but we are merciful because god is mercy don't you know i know sometimes people come around here looking for handouts it's just a con don't you think i know that i wasn't born yesterday people say i said if i was you i wouldn't give him nothing i didn't just fall off a turnip truck i'm not that country you don't you don't think i know i know the khan but when i look and i see hopelessness and i know they really think that they fooling somebody that that i show i always show by asking god for mercy i wasn't born yesterday are y'all with me they think that they're running a game but i can see the hopelessness not in their face but in their soul i can see it when i go to hospital gotten to the point where i can smell death i know it's coming so mercy suits the case we're to love righteousness because it's right religion is basically character somebody said character the character of god in human beings in ii peter peter had the audacity to talk about charity peter described religion in terms of our being partakers of god's divine nature second peter chapter three and four here's what he uh ii peter chapter one verses three and four says this according as his divine power have given unto us so god's divine power has given unto us what all things that pertain unto life and godliness through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue look at four whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises that what that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature in other words i'm saved and there is a behavior and a character of god that should be found in me that makes me a partaker of god's divine essence it reveals god's divine essence in me in other words it ain't me it's the god in me now that's powerful that's powerful because if we have god's nature in us peter says we will love the things that god loves and our god is a god of mercy god loves mercy and our deeds are an expression of our character if we love mercy if we love right if we love what god loves our lives will reflect it and people will know that you are god's child it's a problem when somebody's always hollering about i'm a christian or i love the lord and can't nobody see it they may see the spirit of a bulldog but they don't see the spirit of god that's a problem that's a problem it should be it's a problem for other people and it should be a red flag for us christian character is the character of god planted in people it is the need of the hour it's the need of the day it is necessary in our individual lives we've got to have the character of god in church life in our government dealings in our business life in educational careers in all the affairs of our physical life we gotta have god's one of the most dramatic and emotional scenes in the old testament is samuel's farewell address you remember samuel yeah samuel when he said goodbye you remember that god's people no longer wanted to be led by a preacher prophet you see when because what god wanted was what we call a theocracy god wanted his people to be led by his man leader like like moses and so forth it was a theocracy but the people got to a point where they no longer wanted to be led by a preacher prophet they were not interested in a theocracy they wanted a king to rule over them like all the other neigh has anybody gone to sunday school in here they wanted a king they wanted a monarchy just like all the other nations and after the king had covered himself with glory in the defeat of the ammonites and the old prophet at last realized that he had to step down fade away as a discarded abuser of god's authority look at and listen to samuel's message first samuel chapter 12 beginning with verse 1. look at what samuel said and samuel said unto all israel behold i have hearkened unto your voice in all that you have said unto me and have made a king over you in other words he passed the baton to a king that they wanted look at verse two he says and now behold the king walketh before you you say yeah you wanted him you got him he's walking before you and i am old gray head and behold my sons are with you samuel's sons had some problems too he says that i have walked look at what he said i have walked before you from my childhood until this day behold here i am witness against me before the lord in other words why is it that you no longer want rule from me witness against me and before his anointing in other words the king that we've just anointed tell me while we're all here just tell me he says witness against me whose ox have i taken you know have i stolen anything or whose ass have i taken or whom have i defrauded whom have i oppressed or whose hand have i received any bribe to blind mind eyes therewith and i will restore it to you right now you see samuel says i've been doing this for a long time he says can anybody say that i didn't honor them right and dealt unjustly and wasn't kind of merciful if there's anybody that can say i stole anything from them he said speak up right now he said because i'm about to walk away and you can have this has anybody read this bible and on that day not one person could testify against him what was samuel's secret that's really the thing because samuel was one of those prophets uh that that prophesied for a long time he he was there he was a priest a prophet he was there he was a preacher he was all those transition what was his secret how had this one man been able to draw israel back to god and that was what had happened he drew him back to god he wanted to have the leader and everything it was through the integrity of his character and that's why the bible has that piece of it it was through the integrity of his character that samuel's real religion was revealed toward god and man in other words people could see the god in him revealed through his character he dealt justly he loved mercy he was kind and he walked humbly before his god and that's my prayer for god's people and our nation at this particular time to be quite honest god let your divine nature shine in us so bright that men may see you and know that you are god all by yourself i wrote that yesterday in my office i wrote it down so i'd make sure that i wouldn't forget it because real religion requires love for mercy and kindness but not only that here's my third and my final real religion requires a genuine experience with god in our hearts in other words we're to walk humbly with the lord humbly with the lord this speaks about an experience with god when you're walking with god that means you're having an experience with god and experience grows into an intimate fellowship none of us came into this world with a best friends somewhere along the way in our walk and our experiences we ran into folk that was like spirit and we began to walk with them and they walk with us y'all welcome to me we like what they like they like what we like we enjoyed where we they went and we they where we went they enjoy we we just created an intimate relationship that's how it is with god in the list of begets in genesis chapter 5 we find the biography of a man named enoch i'm almost through in genesis 5 and 24 you find the i show in his biography of any person i've ever seen in genesis 5 and 24 it says and enoch walked with god and he was not for god took him but that first part before that colon is his biography it simply says enoch walked with god doesn't say anything else about him doesn't say he was president of the pta uh he he worked for some big time company doesn't say he made six fig no doesn't say any of that it just says enoch walked with god and he was not because god took him this is all it says about that man these five words are a wonderful biography of a man who knew god and daily increased in his knowledge and likeness until god took him to be with him the only way to make a relationship meaningful and real is to spend time in it until it is developed there's no magic to walking through this life and dealing with this life we grow into god's likeness as we walk with him not hurriedly or reluctantly but humbly but what's happening in our day and time is people are walking away from god and they don't even know or consider that what they're doing is walking away from god they're walking away from his character the values that represent god he made things possible for our nourishment and enjoyment all of these things because god loves us and we walk with him we walk with him not hurriedly but humbly at daybreak when we're awake from a long night slumber we're with him at noonday when you whisper a prayer over a meal that he made possible for our nourishment and our blessing we're walking with him at the end of the day when night overtakes us we gladly spend time telling him thank you lord for your love and your protection today humbly declaring how great he is humbly embracing his awesome otherness begging him to wrap his loving arms around our children who don't understand quite yet why just because he's god not because he won't gave you anything new not because he did a miracle just for you not because he made the mountain shake or the winds blow like a blast from his nostril not any of that but just because you humbly walked with him all day long and you enjoyed him as he enjoyed you so let me close like this there's a song the church used to sing from time to time we sing and he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me i am his own has anybody sung that lately and this song is biblically true god has always been willing to walk with us all the time even when we no longer desire to walk with him he pursued us our god wants to walk with us so badly that he has dispatched preachers all around the world to call us back to his side i'm talking about real religion it's time for us to learn how to walk with god god has never failed to walk with us but it is us who have failed to walk with god and that is what michael wanted the children of judah to realize that is what was missing from the people's religion then and from the people religion now that is precisely what is missing from our sad and often weak religion today god walked with us when he allowed us to be born into this sad world he walked with us as he provided parents and other caregivers for our needs when we were babies as we grew into children and we learned to walk and no longer crawl god walked with us he kept us from scene and unseen danger he walked with us as we grew into young adulthood we learned to trade we worked for a wage we built businesses and careers and as we grew up we became more arrogant than most because we thought it was of our own brilliant greatness we learned to ignore his goodness and mercy and by his hands we were fed and we acted as if we made the rain to fall and the crops to grow god forgive our arrogance still he allowed us to grow into middle age and some of us even into old age now and he kept his promises toward us yes god has always walked with us even when some of us got into trouble and suffered along the way some of us became foolish and our hearts were darkened by wickedness still god was willing to pursue us as we walked away from him this is the message that micah preached to the people of his day no there is nothing wrong with god's walk but as the people of god we all need to have our walk tuned up every now and then that's why god asks his people what have i done what have i done to you that was so bad so let us just make sure that we walk with him that we find out where he is going and then follow him humbly in pursuit that's also why micah's prophecy about the messiah is in short prophetic book here in these seven chapters because god allowed this prophet to gaze upon his beauty as he looked through the lens of time to see his coming michael foresaw the coming of god's only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but shall have everlasting life made possible by the son of almighty god one last time micah 6 and 8. look at this verse he has shown thee o man what is good and what does the lord require thee but to do justly to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy god in chapter 6 beginning with verse 11 through chapter 7 verse 17 michael makes it clear that his people did not deserve the goodness and mercy of god have you read this bible he makes it clear because they fail to walk with god but look at what micah says about his god responding to real religion in micah 7 18-20 here's what he says and i close who is a god like unto thee that pardon iniquity even though we've been ugly to him that's willing to pardon iniquity and passes by the transgressions of the remnant of his heritage he restrains not his anger forever because he delighteth in mercy he will turn again he will have compassion upon us he will subdue our iniquities and thou will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea look at 20. thou will perform the truth to jacob and the mercy to abraham who thou has sworn unto our fathers from the days of old micah says god gonna keep his word god gonna keep his word even though we foolishly arrogantly will walk away from god god pursues us all around the world god is dispatched preachers and satan has tried to corrupt even that but there are preachers today they're standing before almighty god they're standing before god's preachers and they declare that there is a god who loves a sinful man so much so that he sent his only begotten son down through 42 generations he came born of a virgin wrapped in swaddling clothes i say he came that we might have life and have it more abundantly he died on a hill called calvary have you heard they hung him high and they stretched him wide they nailed his hands and spiked his feet he died i said he died he didn't have to die but he died that we might have a right to the tree of life they put him in a bar a tomb have you heard he stayed there all friday he was there friday night he was there saturday morning he was still there because my sins had blocked out grace and mercy but early sunday morning that same jesus he got up with all power in heaven and earth in his hands he lives he lives i tell you he lives because it's important god wants his people no matter how far we've walked away from him god wants his people to come and live with him he wants just he wants us to be just he wants our character to include justice he wants us to love mercy love mercy so much so that even when people don't deserve it that we have the audacity to grant it to him along with kindness [Music] but more than that god wants us to desire to simply walk with him and he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me i'm his own [Music] how did he do it jesus i said jesus i said jesus he's that kind of friend god bless your heart [Music] let us stand it's invitation time as brother walker offers the invitation to christ and as i acquire scene will it be one brother walker [Music] [Music] one thing i love about the law something's up [Applause] just raise your hand [Music] shine bright shine all around us jesus [Applause] [Music] is every day keeps on making a way out of nowhere where you come [Music] jesus come on chase walk with me oh walk in the line down and is jesus there's something about the name jesus [Music] the songwriter says the sweetest sound i know let me tell y'all something i'm gonna sit my behind down [Music] when pastor hall preached last sunday about blurry vision let me tell you one thing it don't matter if you walk the corner all night long it don't matter how good she was slinging dice but when god says you need to turn your life around stop looking at what somebody else has what somebody else did and what somebody else is to you people don't read the pastor they don't read the bible they know bible look at us are you gonna pray with me they look at how you struggle in your life they don't worry about what god said and look at what you said because in your life if you've ever been lied on talked about mistreated then look at you and see how you deal with it if you come out of the box and you want to fight somebody god ain't blessing you but you come out of the box and say lord bless them when he went to the cross he said father forgive them for they know not what they do and i know i may be out of my place but let me tell you something i got three broken discs in my back last year it replaced disney hopefully this year they're gonna replace this knee two years ago i had my kidney replaced and if you don't believe there's a living testimony standing in front of you you don't know who god [Applause] i might get ugly but let me tell you something i need somebody to pray for me i'm going to pray all by myself the lord i serve sits huh and looks low and if you haven't changed your life around you look at think about one thing tomorrow is not promise today is the present and tomorrow is just a promise but if you ain't can fix your mind and get your life right with god right now covert is real folks people are dying every day so before he let your light come out of your eyes make a decision make a decision he said the real religion ain't nothing no who butter who you can hoop all day long we can squall all day long but you ain't get nothing out of it you ever had gravy with no with no potatoes that's a hope but what pastor hall did was preach what he does is teach and i'm thankful for that pastor and i apologize for mike but god is real our god is an awesome god and he is worthy to be praised and at this time let us receive our pastor [Music] i'm all out it's been good to be here with you today i pray that uh we will walk humbly with our god don't forget our deacons are going to be available for you if you need some of the sanitizer we don't want you to have to go out looking to buy it or getting in line and wrestling with folk for it we've got plenty and if you need some just when you leave here today go ahead and drive by the additional parking area of the parking barn across the street there where the vans on and our deacons will gladly take care of you thank you so very much if there's nothing else yes sir okay okay i'm sorry brother okay now we're gonna we can do that for you come on down uh my grandbaby you know i'm gonna tell y'all something you know these babies they watch you now this baby came to me several weeks ago and she said pop pop i said oh what baby i thought she was getting ready to beg for the job suckers that i had over there because the little brother usually the first one she said i want to be baptized [Music] i said i don't believe you she said i do and she kept bothering her mother to take the walk she said i haven't taken the walk and then when it came time for to take the walk she needed somebody to hold her hand to take that walk it gets scary along the way especially when you have to walk this life you're by yourself but even in her little frame she knows she doesn't have to walk it all along and i want that message to be the final message you hear you don't have to do this thing by yourself his name is jesus he's that kind of friend kieran would you like to tell everybody your name uh you usually have a big voice until it gets in a crowd of people you want to where is that there you go all right pull it down so we can hear what's your name it's not on hold it up under there now this is the one who you can hear her at the front door all the way past the back patio over dogs hollering there you go blue light okay we just want to get her let me hear them go ahead tell who you are karen j hall [Applause] i need to know some things from you do you accept jesus christ as your lord and savior yes we didn't hear you speak up yes you want to be baptized as a show of that faith in him and i have a great pleasure i'm going to baptize you just as soon as he can get that area fixed up over there where we can baptize how's that okay [Applause] all right look now she looks vulnerable now but that's a powder keg right there most of the grandparents know what i'm talking about amen look give some love to our young people [Applause] i look forward i look forward to baptizing my grandbaby amen is there anything else we've forgotten why don't we stand [Music] together the lord god bless you real good woke me up this morning start me on my way let me see the dawning of a brand new day i want y'all to know
