want to say thank you lord thank you for your sweet unconditional precious love and the grace that you have bestowed upon us this day lord for this is the day you have made we shall rejoice and be glad in it father god lord now we pause to ask for forgiveness of our sins father god because we want to be able to have a fellowship with your worship experience with you lord so blot out all our sight of god and man trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding in all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths thank you [Music] good morning [Music] i know we normally sit doing this part but i'ma ask everyone to stand because it's very important to receive our lord and savior who has done everything for us there is nothing that he can't do [Applause] [Music] my thing is i need thee oh i need thee i need thee every hour i need the oh god we've gone through many trials and tribulations during these months but my god has never failed not once it doesn't matter what the report says it says who report do you believe we shall believe the report of the lord my report card says all days my a says he's able my a says almighty god my age says there is nothing that he can't do that he won't do that he hasn't done that he won't be doing my trust lies in the lord so as we stand right now i know someone has something that they need to carry to the lord he said i will take all your burdens all your trials all your tribulations he said laid at his feet so i come to the throne of god to give him all not some all my heart pours out to be oh god let us pray father god as we come into your presence right now lord god we come asking not begging we come asking for deliverance on today lord god i ask you right now father god fix my heart i don't cry out right now for someone else i'm coming before you oh god to cry out for me on this day lord god father god i know you will take care of every need father god i pray for all the names on the prayer list i pray right now for every name that each one in here is asking for for whatever it is lord god that it is in your word it shall be done forgiveness right now lord god father you have some of you he's healed your body some of he's he's been a father he's been a mother when your father or mother have gone on to be with the lord but the god is faithful he is just and he will do what he said he would do thank you choir for reminding us of that [Music] at this time we will have our tribute to our deceased women of mount zion baptist church by sister patrice brown and our introduction to our guest speaker preacher by minister angela tillman [Music] good morning since i couldn't get out of this i'll thank pastor jones for tapping me [Music] to pay tribute to the beloved women of mount zion who have passed on john chapter 11 verses 25 and 26 reads in part i am the resurrection and the life the one who believes in me will live even though they die and whoever lives by believing in me will never die and so i offer though the pew where you once sat you sit no more though a scan of the audience finds you no longer dwell among the congregation though your physical presence has ascended to higher heights today we pause and celebrate you and all that you meant to mount zion and most importantly all that you meant to the body of christ your memory is our keepsake and although god now has you in his care your memory lives on and at this time i ask that you please stand and join in a moment of silence as we commemorate the cherished memories of those women who have passed on they may be gone from our hearts for my midst but never from my hearts [Music] amen thank you [Music] good morning mount zion when will he come through every time every time we can pay tribute because he came through every time the women of mount zion we stand on the shoulders of those that have gone on before us and some that are sitting right here right now and that's who we pay tribute to my task is a simple task i'm to introduce the woman of the hour the reverend dr sandra james mighty woman of god mighty woman of god you have your bulletins i won't read it all i'll try to hit the highlights if that's all right with you but i really want you to know that we have a preacher in the house we have a preacher in the house a preacher that's going to preach a word that the lord gave her us for such a time as this and i won't say irony i'll say the divineness of the lord is is that the last time we had a women's day celebration it was reverend dr sandra james so let me tell you this right here is so fitting that today when the lord is opening up new avenues he's teaching us in a different way that it be dr sandra james amen well let me tell you a little bit about her the reverend dr sandra james is a native of tuscaloosa alabama she is the fifth of eight children a devoted wife a proud mother of three wonderful adult children jonathan olivia and the late mr derrick james senior a daughting grandmother of six gifted grandchildren and great-grandmother of two sandra has served as a servant leader in ministry for a long and was bat a long time and was baptized at an early age sorry she has served as a servant leader minister for as long as she can remember that's what the senate says she acknowledged her call to preach and to teach the gospel of jesus christ and was later licensed and ordained this year reverend james celebrates 35 years in ministry 35 years in ministry to god be the glory reverend james has traveled the country and abroad preaching and teaching the gospel of jesus christ and god as god leads her heart and gives her favor if you read that next paragraph you'll know that she is educated she's not just standing up on her own volition she's standing up on teach word teach an understood word and she was awarded her doctorate from garton cornell theology seminary to all the military in the house she is a retire retired officer serving over 23 years of active military service in the united states army some of the things that she does on her own volition is this dr james is the founder of rejoice incorporated she is always busy which it was birthed out of psalm 118 24 her call as a preacher and teacher as well as a founder of rejoice allows her to embrace her love as a preacher inspirational speaker teacher and facilitator reaching and equipping people for leadership through service in corporate civic christian public private organizations i wanted to read that because it's just not in the church house her ministry reaches outside the four walls she's just not confined here she goes outside and she touch you wherever you are she'll meet you wherever you are the last paragraph simply says that dr james currently serves as the assistant pastor of the first mount zion baptist church located in dumfries virginia where the reverend dr luke e torien is pastor in her personal relationship with god her daily affirmation is psalms 1 18 24. this is the day the lord has made let us rejoice and be glad in it i'm excited about the word that's going to be preached after this after the choir sings and if you'll help me i'll take a little bit from my pastor to let you know reverend huggins i'm listening back there if you reach your right hand out and just point it towards dr james and say dr james come wearing my mask and colvin came to my house but i thank god that god is worthy to be praised thank you for the opportunity to be with you again thank you pastor first lady i under the pastor of this house the shepherd the reverend dr alfred jones senior lady jones minister angela sister deaconess sandra for keeping me informed and you know it's one thing to be invited but it's another thing to be invited back again so i praise god that hopefully we did something right the last time we were here would you go with me to the lord in prayer gracious and loving god we thank you for this worship service we thank you for all that we have heard and all that our hearts have felt the for the reminder that you and you alone are worthy to be praised oh god i've done the work but i need your power i've done the study but i need your spirit help me oh god as i stand before your people today let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight oh lord you are my strength and you are my redeemer in jesus name we pray and give thanks amen i'm just glad to be here thank you again for the opportunity to the officers and members and friends of mount zion baptist church i honor my pastor and his absence to dr luki tori and for him graciously letting me come today we're installing our officers for the new year so pray for us as we pray for you as we move through this time and place pastor said i can come in my own way and so i just want to let you know i will trust in [Laughter] the lord y'all don't know that i will trust in the lord i will trust come on church in the lord until i die yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah that's your theme today that's your theme i will trust in in the lord i will trust in in the lord until i die when i was growing up in the church they were staring like this i'm going to stay on the battlefield i'm going to stay yes yes yes help me church help me oh lord i'm going to stay on the battle [Applause] stay [Applause] [Music] [Applause] i [Music] going to stay on the battlefield until i die hallelujah come on put your hands together while you're standing here the word of the lord according to proverbs chapter 3 verse 5 and 6 the word of the lord says trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways acknowledge him god and the lord shall direct your path the message translation eugene peterson says it like this trust god from the bottom of your heart don't try to figure it out everything on your own listen for god's voice in everything you do and everywhere you go he's the only one who will keep you on track the word of god to the people of god you may be seated in the presence of the lord your theme for this year is taken from the verses we just heard and your theme is i will trusting god is your thing trusting god and so as i said with that prayerfully i kind of went into the old church call and response mode where i heard mount zion say trusting god and sandra james came back and said i will trust in the lord i will trust in the lord i want to just do a mic check and a room check and a church check to see if i got any witnesses in the house today i want you to give voice if god has been good to you so i do i have any witnesses that you know that you know that you know do i have any witnesses that you know god is still speaking that you know god is still hearing that you know god is still seen that you know god is still pursuing that you know god is still restoring and that you know god is still forgiving his people today the one who reveals himself as the great i am the eternal the impotent the all-knowing god is still at work another witness check do you know today that just as god moved in the past god is still working it out for your good and for our glory i don't know about you church but i'm glad about it today i'm glad i'm glad i'm glad that's why my clarion called my testimony my story today is i will trust in the lord yes yes church that is my story that is my testimony that's my alibi and i'm sticking to it today because god is worthy to be praised what about you what about you we have lost a lot over these past 18 months a global pandemic has infected over 42 million and killed over 684 thousand people in the united states alone racial and civil unrest continues to raise its ugly head we are still masking and physically distancing ourselves for health and safety reasons but i'm so glad that when the building was closed the church was still open the church is still alive and well people are fighting over who should wear a mask and who should get vaccinated and if covet 19 was not enough our nation and our world are constantly in the survival mode from hurricanes and tornadoes and forest fires and earthquakes and floods but god is still in control but god is not caught by surprise so my testimony today is i will trust in the lord what kind of world are we living in when people are not treated with humanity what kind of world are we living in that simply because of the color of their skin there are walls built to keep some out and we've seen recently how horses and whips were used to round up people that look like us like animals while another group was flown over on a chartered flight something is wrong with that because they're all suffering the same plight living in poverty afraid for their lives i i would hate to say and i would hate to think is it because they got a little too much melanin in their skin or or that they they look like me and they look like you and so we want to treat them different and say it's for a political reason but i'ma tell you god is not pleased with that unwise ungodly decision and i said it and i'm sticking to it my name is sandra james and i approve that message glory to god glory to god glory to god pastor i had to say it because we're all watching it all hallelujah so now as we move to the text for today a little historical context although the book of proverbs i know you know this because i know your pastor and i watch him teach on tuesday nights i'm in your class although the book of proverbs begins with the title ascribing the proverb to the wisest man ever living king solomon it is suggested that by scholars that he was not the only writer the hebrew word for proverb also translates as an oracle or a parable and most proverbs you know them are short statements that express truth and wisdom for human behavior words to live by if you will the proverbs were written for easy memorization and for some of us what we thought was old wives tales from grand mom and them we got older and began to study the bible for ourselves and we realized that what grandmama and our ancestors gave voice to in their teaching of to us was a proverb was a parable or some other teachable point in god's word the book of proverbs is a manual for living written down so we'll know how to live well and to do what is right to understand what life means therefore we hear the metaphor the simile the figurative language of the proverbs that goes something like this a gentle word turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger or for many of us our personal favorite as a child from the proverbs on sparing the rod and saving your child's soul from hell uh you mount zion you women ministry have chosen for your theme trusting in god focusing on proverbs 3 5 and 6 and i have tapped into your theme with the samonic response i will trust in the lord in the text this morning the writer tells us in verse 5 to trust in the lord with all thine heart i know you know some of us been reciting it since we were children trust is defined as the firm belief in the reliability the truth the ability or strength of someone or something and for us people of faith for us that someone in the text the writer is talking about is the lord the sovereign god the creator of heaven and earth the almighty one the alpha and omega the beginning and the end the first and the last he is the one that we trust in this trust is a declaration of faith this instruction is to trust the lord and not in our own selves for good success jeremiah 29 11 says for i know the plans i have for you declares the lord plans to prosper you not to harm you plans to give you hope and a future so trusting in the lord means to rely on the lord for protection believing that in all circumstances god is working things out for your good and god's glory do i have a witness trusting trusting will always make will not always make sense i believe that is why the psalmist tells us to lean not to our own understanding because when you got more money than money you got to trust in the lord when the doctor's looking at you and they don't know what how to cure what you got you got to trust in the lord when you can't sleep at night because things are going on to keep us restless and the word of god says he'll give you sweet sleep you've got to trust in the lord so it may not make sense to us but if we trust and lean and not into our own understanding the lord will work it out so i believe i believe that's why the psalmist says don't lean on your own understanding don't care how many degrees of letters you got behind your name trust in the lord this kind of trust requires total commitment the commitment that comes with all your heart david says bless the lord and everything that is within me that means with my nephesh my whole being everything that is in me i will trust the lord in all my ways this kind of understanding comes with godly wisdom it's not natural carnal thinking that can undermine your faith when obedient faith is present the lord will guide the believer along life's journey that's why the bible tells us walk by faith and not by sight because sight will keep you up at night sight or make you lose your appetite sight or give your also sight or give you high blood pressure sight will make you not want to have anybody come over your house sight will keep you at home sight will make you worry yourself to death but he says walk by faith lean not to your own understanding truth be told there are times in our lives when we desire to take things in our own hands and be the captain of our own ships but i believe the text is saying to trust and believe with your heart it's greater than to trust and believe with your head the word of god says give your heart to god for out of it are the issues of life so church therefore i will trust in the lord so the psalmist says trust in the lord and lean and with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding there are things that will happen to us that we will never understand and it just does not make sense there is suffering there is brokenness and pain that we will never be able to wrap our minds or our hearts around and sometimes all i can say is god i trust you yet i trust god i'll look at something i'm like yet i trust god these are the things the songwriter says we will understand better by and by like three months before i got sick i was walking five miles every day eating right drinking water washing my hands staying at home wearing a mask using gloves wiping things down and i'm walking feeling good and the holy spirit says begin to pray over your life and your family about healing i'm like healing lord i'm walking i'm feeling good and you give me an unction to pray about healing three months before i ended up in icu and when i ended up in icu all those prayers kept coming back to me i believe the lord was having me make that deposit because the lord knew what was around the corner even when you try to do everything right stuff happens so it may not make sense and you may not be able to wrap your head or your heart around it but beloved trust god trust god will never understand god's ways for the lord says my ways are not your ways neither my thoughts your thoughts church i don't know about you but i'm glad god only calls me to have faith and to believe and not necessarily understand the psalmist says teach me lord the ways of your dis decrees that i may follow it to the end give me understanding so that i may keep your law and obey it with all my heart we trust the lord for our lives because our understanding is limited and if the truth be told sometimes flawed so we trust the lord we lean not on our own own understanding and then the summit said says uh solomon writes and in all thy ways acknowledge him in proverbs notice here that it says in all thy ways not some of our ways not half our ways not three quarters of our ways but all our ways because why because it is the lord the bible says it is in the lord that we live and we move and we have our being so we can do nothing nothing nothing without the lord we can't even get up unless the lord says so we don't even have the activity of our limbs unless god gives us grace so in all your ways i'm i'm so thankful i brushed my teeth telling god thank you i take a shower because i couldn't at one point telling god thank you drying myself dressing myself i can go up my stairs now without having to sit down halfway because i'm out of breath so i tell god thank you in all thy ways acknowledge him and let the lord direct your path acknowledging the lord is to be ever mindful of the lord and serve the lord with a faithful heart and in uh my daily meditation i prayed lord how will you speak to me today help me to be attentive help me to be sensitive to your word lord don't let me miss out don't let me be distracted let me hear what you would say to me today and help me to trust you to the more it says and then if we acknowledge him in all our ways the beauty of it is it says and he shall direct your path that's the best gps you can ever have the lord will tell you when to reroute went to turn around and he'll also say you have arrived so he shall direct your path let the lord direct your path let the one who knows the beginning and the end lead god and direct you in the way you should go not what someone else is doing but in the way you should go some people go to dc on route 1 some go on 95 but they all get there soon or later but it's the way you should go let the lord direct you the lord who knows every situation you are going to face before you face it every trial that's ahead let the lord direct your path it may not be the easiest it may not be the shortest but it is the path that is desired that you should take as you trust in the lord to guide you on the best path that the lord would have for you so today the world situation is so confusing people have lost their sense of direction to know what is the right thing to do and the right thing to say people just rude and mean but they're i'm here to tell you that there is a conditional promise here that if you if you trust the lord with all your heart and if you lean not to your own understanding and if you conditional acknowledge the lord in all your ways the promise of the lord is i'll get you there i'll direct your path i'll keep you from running off the road i'll be with you if you have a flat on the way if you run out of gas i'll send some the holy spirit to give your power if you're weary and weak i'll strengthen you the lord said i'll direct your path the lord will not force us or push us but the lord will lead the lord with guide and the lord will direct us church all i'm trying to tell you is i will trust in the lord what about you so even when we don't understand what god is doing god is always at work god is always pursuing the loss god is always restoring the broken god is always calming the anxious heart god is always comforting the lonely heart helping the angry encouraging the fearful and i'm so glad that god is forgiving the guilty god invites us to join him and to trust him to quiet ourselves and listen to the voice of god for god says i do not change and i do not forget about you and as we learn to trust in the lord we begin to see the world and what god is teaching and when god teaches it's because we need to learn what the lord commands is we need to strive to do and what the bible reveals we need to desire and see the experience what the lord promises we need to expect it in faith and then look to receive it what the lord requires we try to fulfill and live out in our daily walk and walk just simply means how you live before god and your fellow man what the word of god offers we choose to accept why because we trust in god and my testimony is i will trust in the lord we trust in the lord because his reputation is good over 2 000 years ago you know the story the lord sent jesus down and pastor jones generation would say through 42 end generations he walked this earth like a man but he was fully god and fully human he was healing the sick raising the dead stopping funeral processions opening blinded eyes you know the story making the dumb to talk and making those who are lame to walk and then they took him to a judgment hall and they took him from judgment hall to judgment hall they whipped him they spat on him and they took him to a hill called golgotha a hill called cavalry and my grandfather was saying they hung him on an old rugged cross but i'm so glad that he didn't stay there because the bible says on the third day jesus the lord raised jesus up from the dead god raised him from the dead and jesus made a promise that i have all power in my hands i'm so glad that all you have to do is believe and accept jesus as lord and savior and trust him because the story is not over you do know he's coming back again with for a church without spot or wrinkle he is coming back again and covet can't stop him he is coming back again and a global pandemic can't push him back he is coming back again and foolish politicians can't hold that date but i'm so glad he's coming back after me and after you a church without spot or wrinkle a church i love this beautiful edifice but the lord is coming back after the church not this building but the church not this carpet but the church not the chapel but the church not the parking lot but the church and that's you and for me and i don't know about you but i want to be ready i want to be ready when the lord breaks the clouds for the bible says the trump of god will sound and the dead in christ shall rise first and those who remain shall be caught up to meet him in the air and i don't know about you but if i'm still here i'm taking the first flight out i want to meet the lord in the air i want to hear him say well done thy good and faithful servant i want to say lord i trusted you and you showed yourself faithful i trusted you and you came to see about me i trusted you and you healed my body i trusted you and you took care of my family i trusted you and you kept a roof over my head i trusted you and you put clothes on my body i trusted you and you put food on my table i trusted you and you kept me when i slept through the night and all i can say church is the bible says some trust in chariots and some trust in horses but we trust in the name of the lord so mount zion do i have a witness has god been good to you will you trust him today will you rewind the tape and just look at how good god has been to you just in the last 24 hours he's worthy of our praise just coming to church and getting here safely he's worthy of our praise so we praise god from the rising of the sun until the going down of the same for the bible says and i'm a witness that the lord is worthy to be praised that the lord strong and mighty is worthy to be praised that the lord mighty in battle is worthy worthy worthy worthy to be praised and i don't know about you but i'll trust him i'll trust him with my life i'll trust him because he's working it out for my good and as i go to my seat all i gotta say is i will trust in the lord i will trust yes in the lord i will trust in the lord until i die [Applause] i will revelations 3 20 he said behold i stand at the door and knock if any man hear my voice and open the door i will come in and sup with him and him with me and how do you open the door you have to tell the lord that you believe that jesus christ came to the earth lived a sinless life he died on the cross he rose again and now he's in heaven as an advocate for us if you confess that with your mouth and believe in your heart then you shall be saved is there anyone today that would like to be saved please come forward and if you and if you're virtually you can still say that prayer and ask the to have to be really quick angeles and i have three minutes my test this afternoon is to give tribute to two wonderful and blessed ladies of this church family and they are mrs sister golden goldie jones our wonderful french lady and to our distinguished mother of the church sister mrs sister rhys may williams [Applause] starting with our first lady sister jones we have come this morning to express our love and gratitude to you first for standing in the shoes position of your of our first lady for around 48 to 49 years we realized this has not been a thrill to ride all these years but thanks be to god you are still here second corinthians 12 9 states and he said to me my grace is sufficient for you my strength is made perfect in weakness we want you to know that we love you we admire you and thank you for loving us put it up with us all with all the attitudes of this congregation and for your example as a christian lady a christian mother of six wonderful children and a christian wife for you have exemplified the proverbs chapter 31 verses 10-31 woman thanks for the impartation of wisdom and knowledge serving with the deaconess and we truly value it immensely we pray that the lord continues to bless and keep you and we say to you remember that ecclesiastic ecclesiastes 11 a states the battle is not given to the swift nor to the strong now i've heard several people say that those that endure to the end well i checked three bibles and i didn't see those at the time that that endured to the end but i will say to you to those that endure to the end mother reese i know you are not here physically but i know you are watching we want to express our love and gratitude to you this morning for you are a member of this wonderful church and for taking on the title of mother of the church thanks for your service for serving here at mount zion in so many capacities over the years including the deaconess ministry also thanks for the importation of your historical knowledge about the inception of this mount zion church and first mount zion church mother reese you are blessed and highly favored we thank you for your wisdom and knowledge an example also of the proverbs chapter 31 10 2 through the 31st verse woman also you are a living testimony that god keeps his word he has given you life longevity for the world to see 98 young years we give you the glory we give god the glory and the honor for blessing you exodus 2012 speaks about honoring your parents comes with a blessing and i say to you you must have been an obedient child because as i look up this up the scripture exodus 20 21 states honor your father and mother that your days may be long up on the land which the lord is giving you he has kept his word up to this minute we will continue to love you and pray for you we here at my zone sage as tasha cobb will say he knows my name he god knows your name god is our thing but you are charging us to think and to say and to proclaim that i will trust the lord is better than we ever thought we'd get sandra reverend james it's really a good word i'm sorry but dr james it was a great word and i'm just really excited that i can sit under that word and i'll take this moment to say a new minister preaching and teaching the gospel we need examples we need exemplary examples and i just want to say thank you for that and if the women of mount zion are the women that are not of mount zion that have some stake in mount zion would stand up and just tell the lord thank you and applaud what he did for us today pastor jones they're here first lady they're here god did it for us we trusted the lord we trusted god we trusted your insight and we we heed it to your word and god showed up amen amen i think that's it for us i think our we heard from dr james she brought us a wonderful word now we need to take the word with us home and live by each and every day of our life trust in the lord with all our heart and lean not to our own understanding but in all our ways acknowledge him and he will direct you i bet thank god for that word i don't know about you but that's the only way i made it this far it's trusting and i thank all
