Sunday Catholic Mass for May 2nd with Father Dave

[Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you hello everybody thank you so much for choosing to keep sunday holy that's who you are you're saying i'm going to be among those people who keep the commandments and keep sunday holy god bless you he sees everything you do for his kingdom and in the gospel today we're going to hear about the vine and the branches and producing fruit and there's a little bit of fruit that you can get you produce for clicking on this mass and saying lord i want to grow in my faith life the times that we haven't grown in our faith life for the times that we've resisted producing fruit for god's kingdom let's ask him to forgive us let's do that by calling to mind our sins lord jesus you are the son of god and son of mary lord have mercy christ jesus you are the center of the holy spirit christ have mercy lord jesus you are the way to the father lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone of the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray almighty ever-living god constantly accomplish the paschal mystery within us that those who are pleased to make new and holy baptism may under your protective care bear much fruit and come to the joys of life eternal through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the acts of the apostles when saul arrived in jerusalem he tried to join the disciples but they were all afraid of him not believing that he was a disciple then barnabas took charge of him and brought him to the apostles and he reported to them how he had seen the lord and that he had spoken to him and how in damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of jesus he moved about freely with them in jerusalem and spoke out boldly in the name of the lord he also spoke and debated with the hellenists but they tried to kill him and when the brothers learned of this they took him down to caesarea and sent him on his way to tarsus the church throughout all judea galilee and samaria was at peace it was being built up and walked in the fear of the lord and with the consolation of the holy spirit it grew in numbers the word of the lord thanks be to god i will praise you lord in the assembly of your people i will praise you lord in the assembly of your people i will fulfill my vows before those who fear the lord the lowly shall eat their fill they who seek the lord shall praise him may your hearts live forever i will praise you lord in the assembly of your people all the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the lord all the families of the nations shall bow down before him i will praise you lord in the assembly of your people to him alone shall bow down all who sleep in the earth before him shall bend and all who go down into the dust i will praise you lord in the assembly of your people and to him my soul shall live my descendants shall serve him let the coming generation be told of the lord that they may proclaim to a people yet to be born the justice he has shown i will praise you lord in the assembly of your people a reading from the first letter of saint john children let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth now this is how we shall know that we belong to the truth and reassure our hearts before him in whatever our hearts condemn for god is greater than our hearts and knows everything beloved if our hearts do not condemn us we have confidence in god and receive from him whatever we ask because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him and his commandment is this we should believe in the name of his son jesus christ and love one another just as he commanded us those who keep his commandments remain in him and he in them and the way we know that he remains in us is from the spirit he gave us the word of the lord thanks be to god alleluia alleluia remain in me as i remain in you says the lord whoever remains in me will bear much fruit alleluia the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to john glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples i am the true vine and my father is the vine grower he takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit and everyone that does everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit you are already pruned because of the word that i spoke to you remain in me as i remain in you just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine so neither can you unless you remain in me i am the vine you are the branches whoever remains in me and i in him will bear much fruit because without me you can do nothing anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned if you remain in me and my words remain and you ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you by this is my father glorified that you bear much fruit and become my disciples the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ okay so i don't know if you're a sports fan out there but um many of us have been watching or listening to i was listening to it uh the nfl draft right so the real football we play here in america right the uh the nfl draft because you're kind of like for us people who love football you're kind of like really sad because there's really no football going on and i didn't even watch it last year i listened to the draft so i didn't see any politics but i don't think there were any politics in football i some people drink their coffee with cream and sugar i drink it black i like my football just to be football okay so that being said there's all these fans apparently like 12 million people watched the nfl draft the first night like more people than who uh more people watched it or tuned into it than people who watched the oscars or the nba playoffs or the nba finals rather some of the games of baseball apparently was really really popular which is great so what's happening right now there are all these fans even viking fans who are walking around saying yeah we're gonna do it we got the right guys we're gonna this is the year we win the super bowl like browns fans are saying that and they got the one of the coaches the browns is from the vikings right giant fans right i mean like even the most sorry team in the nfl their fans are like yeah we got the right guy right now and everyone's all excited and how do you know if the guy you drafted is the right guy the proof is in the pudding right i don't know who's spiking pudding with alcohol like you'll see it on the field right will they produce results right that's how you know right we're all going to dream and hope about it between now and when the nfl season starts hopefully people don't get injured right but that's how i mean you're drafted the only way we know is if they actually make plays on the field i mean right they may seem really good and have all the good measurables of length and jump and you know their time in the 40 right the the running 40 meters like how fast they do it or 40 yards but the only way to really tell if they were the right guy is will they produce well they make plays will they produce on the field jesus is saying the same thing right he says produce good fruit john the baptist would say the same thing in fact some of you remember my john the baptist wrap i have another wrap coming out it's not at the end of this mass then it should be out uh early this week um i'm trying to i'm gonna try to get it done i don't know that i can get it done and attach it here but we'll see but another wrap coming out and jesus what does he say he says produce fruit right he says remain in me now hold on to that remain in me for a moment because as a christian you were you know you were drafted your parents nominated you to be part of god's team in his kingdom and if you made your confirmation you willingly signed with that team with the team of christ with his kingdom here right the kingdom of god you chose to join up you accepted his contract to live and to follow his commandments and what jesus says is remain in me now this is huge because he doesn't say just come to me once and it's forever and ever amen and there are some christians that believe that and they teach that and they sometimes they assail catholics like oh if you die tonight you're going to go to heaven how do you know you have to be short of your salvation right you're just one saved always saved you accepted the lord of jesus christ in your heart as your lord and savior confess with your lips believe in your heart then you're good you're all good you just did it once forever i can tell you on this day i did it that is not anywhere in the scriptures that is taking there are pieces of that in the scriptures but that's taking them out of context and not holding up to the whole of what jesus teaches nor looking at the example of judas or what happens in the book of acts to several people right because what does jesus say today right let's go right to the christ what does he say remain in me remain he doesn't say you know come to me once and that's it like you come to him once forever and ever amen you're good you have to choose him every day and choose to live as his friend right it's not once in your it's your good like for catholics you know will you go to heaven if you die tonight we hope so and hope is not wishful thinking right you may or may be viking fans have wishful thinking about the super bowl this year who knows aaron rodgers little tension there maybe we could do it maybe he'll become a viking like brett favre watch for that i don't know i don't know what i feel about that but what does jesus say he says remain to me right so if i say to you hold on hold on hold on what does that mean well that means you should grab something firmly that means you shouldn't you know give up hope yeah again hope is different than fantasy fantasy has no root in reality hope has a root in reality uh that's just that little distinction is good to know right if if you're a prisoner of war you know you could dream and believe um and have a fantasy that you'll escape your prison but if like a special forces of you know the united states or some country that that is aligned to you shows up and they're like hey we're going to get you out of here hang on and then disappear now you have hope you don't have fantasy you have hope you have an element right now of what's going to happen in the future and it's true right so the hope is different than fantasy okay so if i said you hold on well that means you can let go that just makes sense hold on why would i have to tell you to hold on if there was no opportunity to let go i just simply say touch this right touch this and you're good what does jesus say he says remain in me he says keep the commandments and then people ask well how do i remain in you he's right he tells us ready jesus if you love me keep the commandments and he says produce fruit and this is always true in the church right you have to love god and love your neighbor you have to follow jesus's teachings and what was we say not commit mortal sin and then show evidence of the life within you feed the hungry give drink to the thirsty help other people right the christians say jesus would say pray fast give alms he doesn't say if you pray if you fast if you give zombies he says pray fast give zombie so when you pray when you fast when you give psalms that's like catholic spirituality people always want cool spirituality you have to have these fundamentals love god love your neighbor keep the commandments right don't sin mortally right you and i when whenever a christian creates a mortal sin it's like we're ripping up our contract right you're taking that branch and you break it off of the vine that jesus is talking about and if you and i through our free actions choose to separate and sever our relationship with christ through a mortal sin well then his life is not in us if you die immediately after committing a mortal sin well we're not going to see at the party in heaven right because of your free choice or my free choice if i do that right and so what does jesus say he says remain in me which means what it means being plugged into him like a good player how could how could a player lose uh his you know connection to a team well if he does something that is against the team right he like i don't know he drives drunk you know he has you know connect on becoming a player of the nfl right he god forbid he hits someone right physically gets into a fight with someone you know uh i don't know he does some crime right he betrays the team somehow also there's lots of ways players can be cut from their team because of what they've done actively or what they've done or what they fail to do which is why we start mass we often pray like lord forgive us what we've done what we fail to do because if a player doesn't make plays how long are they going to be kept on the roster if they don't produce fruit and so for us this week this is an opportunity for us one if you commit immortal sin come to confession get your butt grafted back on to almighty god right come back and be like reconnected to him if you've if you violated your contract that you freely signed when you became confirmed say ah father dave i was only a kid back then jesus listens to the words of children he took you at your word took me at mine expects us to fulfill this covenant he's doing his part he expects us to do the same with his help okay so one of you committed moral sin come to confession be forgiven and come back and that's what happens here confession god bends down he picks you up and he puts you back onto the vine back onto the tree and his life flows right back into you and then you're called to produce fruit right and not like real fruit i mean it's great if you do produce fruit but you know charity praying fasting almsgiving helping out other people keeping those commandments and helping other people to follow christ and get to know him we're called to do that right so how's that coming are you making plays for god's kingdom where you're forgiving your enemies not because you want to forgive them because god tells you to forgive them and then gives you the ability and strength to do it as his life flows into you at the parish again this week we have kids making their first holy communion what's happening is boom god like they're signed up for god's team and he's giving them like the first installment of their payment you know they're like pay uh they're drafted on this team in baptism and boom he's putting himself into them in holy communion well those parents should see their kids wanting to pray those kids even choosing to cooperate in the fast that their parents are doing and those kids doing good around the house and for others and their friends even forgiving and not fighting as much when they play their games that should be happening in them on a childless level that'll you know children's level that'll start to grow as they mature until they are ready to be confirmed and sign up to accept that contract for christ themselves and confirmation so are you producing fruit there it is and said well i'm a good person i don't hurt nobody okay so if you're a good person you don't hurt nobody well maybe that means you haven't committed any moral sin but are you producing fruit what jesus will say is right well for those who aren't are producing very little fruit my father will prune when you get older you start thinking about prunes a lot so traffic keeps flowing if you don't know what that means god bless you're probably under 30. but some of you know what i'm talking about for us who are over 40 right producer fruit and pruning but you know if you think of a plant you think of a basil plant for example right if you cut it like it's got like one stem coming up and some flour some leaves coming off well if you cut one of those leaf branches well then it'll grow two more and it will produce more leaf i don't know the right word for it buds or something like that if you cut something back and it's what god says to us and to you and to me he's going to say hey don't have anything to do with this or stop doing that and when you are willing to give that up well then you start to find more fruitfulness in other areas my best friend right god he felt that god was telling him hey joe give up facebook it's not doing you any good and i i'm not on facebook i don't know i know there's a wall i guess it's a it's a walled city i don't understand it when i was at princeton my kids were trying to my prince of kids were trying to tell me about facebook i don't i don't know this is the only social media i'm on right here right and i think youtube is pretty great but he gave up facebook and he's got a lot more joy in his life is what he tells me right i guess people post stuff that's angry or impulsive or i don't i don't even know they put on all kinds of stuff on the wall whatever that means you probably know what that means he gave it up and they're tracking him anyway right facebook tracks everybody and sells your data that's how they make money he gave it up and he's a lot less angry and that's a good thing for his wife and for him and he's got more time he's doing some gardening getting some raised beds and growing multiple gardens i think that's great but i want to see him and we'll conf we'll can concur together about potatoes and lettuce because that's good things okay so produce fruit so are you producing fruit there's fruit you can produce right now right now what is that so there's a lot of people suffering from the coronavirus especially you know around the world but especially in india and canada some of those people are christians some of them belong to our team right well if someone on your team in football is is like you know getting overpowered then you should come and help them right you know you're going to lend your shoulder to help fight and keep them free or to block something running back and get free or something like that right so what can you do what can i do well one thing i was thinking about is we you know we certainly pray and we will we pray for those who are suffering from the coronavirus especially in india and canada but maybe fasting or if you think about it jesus tells us in the bible certain evils only come out through prayer and fasting imagine if i don't know how many people are going to watch this mask this week but if we had like 15 000 people who decided you know what we're gonna fast we're gonna give up meat you know for a length of time for a day or a week maybe a week for the people of india and canada that they that their body we're going to give up our you know the meat the body and blood of animals so that the bodies and the blood circulation of the people in india and canada can be preserved and protected from the coronal virus they need oxygen they're really suffering and no one will know it right when the devil will probably try to tempt you he'll be like hey here's a here hey let's go have a burger or here your neighbor will start grilling the steaks right or something like that but god will know their guardian angels will know your guardian angel will know and you will know don't go around bragging about it but but to spiritually rally for them you know one day in heaven you'll meet the people you've prayed for and fasted for that's part of producing fruit so you're drafted on god's team hopefully you're making plays for his kingdom and never doing anything to get you cut i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen let's raise our prayers of petition to almighty god for all who work in the ministries of the church let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those without faith in jesus may our gracious god open their hearts to his love and mercy and to the glory of salvation let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the unemployed may the lord grant them the opportunity for gainful employment let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the young people may the hope of christ be their strength in the midst of a changing world let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our beloved dead may they soon enjoy everlasting life in paradise let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the end to coronavirus let us pray to the lord hear our prayer and now for those petitions we hold in the silence of our hearts let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer we pray also for the people of india on the people of canada may god move to rescue his children especially all those who are suffering from the coronavirus we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray also that we may always stay connected to christ that we may never say yes to any mortal sin and that we may bear fruit for him in the world we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray that those who are raising children in the faith and god parents may assist parents on connecting their kids to christ especially in the holy eucharist we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer almighty father turn toward us and hear the prayers we ask on your day for we ask them as your son's followers through christ our lord [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] so pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours would be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and the glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church o god who by the wonderful exchange effected in this sacrifice have made us partakers of the one supreme godhead grants we pray that as we have come to know your truth we may make it ours by a worthy way of life through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you o lord but in this time of easter above all to laud you yet more gloriously when christ our passover has been sacrificed through him the children of light rise to eternal life and the halls of the heavenly kingdom are thrown open to the faithful for his death is our ransom from death and the rise and in his rising the life of all has risen therefore overcome with paschal joy every land every people exults in your praise and even the heavenly powers with the angelico sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim [Music] holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your saint therese and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not in our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let's offer each other this sign of peace lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed [Music] oh lord and lead those you have imbued with heavenly mysteries and sacraments to pass from former ways to newness of life through christ our lord just a couple word of thanks again thank you for choosing to keep sunday holy that means a lot you know when you love someone you love when that person you love is loved by others as well right and we love jesus and it's great to see that he's loved by so many people who are choosing at this crazy time say lord i love you i'm going to come to you from my living room or for my bedroom or on my run or something like that so god bless you guys thank you for for choosing to keep sunday holy thanks everybody who gave us a thumbs up or wrote a word of encouragement down below that actually helps it's pretty cool for us we get edified hearing how this is helping people all over the world this past year it's been been pretty cool so thank you for that uh and thank you for a couple folks here i'll just share a couple letters um this one brought joy to my heart this is from anchorage alaska i love when i get letters from alaska i hope i get up to alaska this summer i don't know right now uh right now the diocese up there is not uh is saying to the priest so normally we go up as some we call we're called summer supply priests we come up and help in the summer times right now they're not inviting us up because they don't want us to carry covet i completely understand that was the case last year but i hope i can get up there this year i might still if i can't go and work there formally as a priest i might go up informally and just like you know do covert ops and camp out somewhere and pray secretly for the people of alaska because i don't know i've always felt called to do that okay anyway so when i get letters from people from alaska gives me great joy and this one had some cardinals on it and cardinals mean a lot to me uh spiritually i think of my lost loved ones who have passed away when i see cardinals i know my mom does too so this is from some folks in anchorage that say greeting from anchorage alaska father dave and i've been in anchorage anchorage is pretty great um although i spend i'm mainly in skagway now and it says hi i found your mass by accident and i'm so thankful i did i've been watching it every sunday since i'm now attending mass of my local church but we'll continue to watch your mass too i enjoy your homily so much and your sense of humor is awesome thank you for that not everybody guessed my sense of humor my mom especially does not get it my poor mom but uh thank you so very much and your staff as well i feel like i have become a better catholic because of your mass god bless you on if you ever get to anchorage uh you know look look her up so god bless you marge up there and anchorage coming to you i'm gonna face north right so this is kind of like north over there god bless you up there thank you for keeping the faith in the last frontier and have some um have some reindeer sausage at the end of this week if you're fasting then fast but at the end of the week have some reindeer sausage reindeer sausage is really great everyone you know why like why santa's reindeer works so hard one day a year it's because reindeer sausage is delicious and if they don't they're on the plate um i lost the envelope to this i don't have the envelope to this uh this card but this i think they're in wyoming um could be wisconsin uh from the howard family thank you father dave for helping us through our pandemic your masses have been a blessing to our family um our seven-year-old addie and four-year-old julia have actually started to sit still and pay attention now that we've found your masses isn't that awesome our critters typically join us too but they tend to fall asleep over correctly fall asleep it's a little out of season but they included a christmas card so really really cool and then their daughter addie included a letter so i'll show you they have a great group of animals and eddie writes uh father dave my family and me we all love laugh when we watch your video they are funny keep online forever she sounds like she's probably a little brooklyn with diane online forever please online father dave uh we have animals a lot yes they do god bless you guys and all your animals uh you know god loves animals he made he made he made the animal kingdom before he made us right and he puts them in a relationship to us so uh good job being good stewards out there the howard family of all of god's kingdom what do they have they have a goat a beagle which was my first dog as a kid was a beagle i love beagles i've become a labrador guy since uh looks like they have a couple goats a horse they have a tortoise and there's no hair so the tor the right the hor the tortoise is beating the hair and lastly of course what did diane say when when or what will diane say when she gets to heaven right because she's going to stay plugged into christ close to the sacraments and bear fruit what is she going to say when she gets to heaven what is all this whining about because jesus says he'll drink the wine new in his kingdom you'll have to rewind the mass to get it the lord be with you may almighty god bless you the father
