wednesday encountering god together we're now four weeks away from multiple meetings we have much to pray for much to be thankful for god is really doing good stuff at the moment he certainly is we're here to worship jesus this morning and just this week i've just heard so many great reasons for us to worship jesus that he is encountering people in our community through this church on wednesday night our season of prayer i heard two testimonies one of a young girl that said i met jesus for the first time i encountered the holy spirit for the first time in her life and someone else said they encountered jesus so much on wednesday night that they recommitted their life to him and then yesterday yeah we can cheer that yesterday i had the privilege of speaking at the hong kong alpha holy spirit day we've been gathering a group from the hong kong community over the summer and there was a lady that gave her life to jesus for the first time yesterday here jesus is on the move jesus wants to encounter us jesus is so good he wants us to know his love his goodness and he wants to save and move in our lives so let's worship him today let's lift him up let's give him all that he deserves says and we all with unveiled face beholding the glory of the lord are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another i just hear jesus saying look at me [Music] if you're looking at someone who who doesn't care about you who cares about everyone else you're not looking at me he says if you're looking at someone who can't meet your needs who who is not that powerful that's not me if you're looking at someone whose eyesight is dimmed and i can't see you where you are you've gone too far away you've wondered i don't care about you that's not me jesus says look at me [Music] i love you i care for you i died for you i gave everything for you i love you where you are all authority is mine look at me [Music] jesus we we look to you we look to you we thank you for in me yet not i but through christ in me [Music] yeah lord that's our prayer this morning not i but christ in me lord we look to you lord you are our hope our help you are our friend you are the one who comes meets every need we look to you we put our trust in you christ in me this body might be like a clay jar but actually it's the home of the holy spirit because christ dwells with all of us that know him and love him we give you glory this morning we thank you jesus amen amen amen we um are in a season of prayer at the moment and we're calling this season a new thing that we believe in that god is doing a new thing amongst us a new thing in people's lives that he's going to change people's lives he's going to break into people's lives he's going to encounter us in new ways and as we're in a season of prayer i'd love us just to spend a bit of time just praying this morning and to start with i'd love us to pray for our up-and-coming alpha course alpha is a a great course that's been put together to help people to explore the christian faith hdb who put the alpha course together have done a brilliant job at updating the material is fantastic material that just helps people find out about who jesus is explore the gospel look at what it means to follow him to live life as a christian and so far this year we've been running a few alpha courses and we've had seven people that have committed their lives to jesus for the first time over this year already which is incredible through going on alpha and through exploring the christian faith together we've got an alpha course coming up that's starting on the 30th of this month and i would love jesus to multiply what he has done already for him to reveal himself to many people on this coming alpha course so we've got a few weeks before the course starts and i suppose there's a challenge to all of us that we would be inviting people over the coming weeks that would come and journey through this alpha with us and i want to pray this morning that as invites go out many people would say yes to come and find out about jesus and the christian faith on this course so i'd love us to pray for people to say yes to coming on the course and then i'd love us to pray that people would meet jesus that they would find him that they would find faith in him as we explore the christian faith over those ten weeks together that we would hear many testimonies of people giving their lives to jesus so i'd love us to pray together why don't we just start by praying for people that you know that don't know jesus can we do that together could we all pray out why don't you pray for friends and family that they would know god's love that they would know god's hope they would know what it is to put their faith and their trust in jesus let's just if you feel confident just pray out loud for friends and family so [Music] lord jesus we're praying for the loss we're praying for those that don't know you we're praying lord jesus for people that we know that we love and that we care about that they would come to know you that they would come to discover your goodness they would come to put their trust in you the one that loves them the one that's made a way for them the one that went to the cross for them the one that created them and longs for relationship with them we pray lord jesus for those that that are distant that are switched off that that are living for things in life that don't satisfy look god we pray that they would come to the one that only satisfies the one that is good the one that wants an eternity with them lord jesus we pray lord jesus for many people to get saved to go from darkness to light lord jesus and now i'd love us to pray for this up and coming alpha course i'd love us to pray that many people would come and explore the christian faith on alpha starting on the 30th of september and that many people would come to know jesus through that so please join with me let's pray why don't you just pray out pray out for people in our community to say yes to ultimately say yes to jesus do a new thing jesus do a new thing come and and multiply come and save the lost lords come and use us lord jesus come and use us lord god to see your kingdom go out to see your good news go out to see your light come into darkness to see lost souls save lord jesus to see people find hope and freedom lord jesus in you i pray for alpha lord god i pray that many people would come and explore who you are and we discover who you are lord jesus over these next 10 weeks as we do alpha together lord thank you jesus thank you that you said that you would save the lost thank you you said you would build your church so jesus we pray for your blessing and your favor to be with us and to be upon us at this time lord god do it for your glory jesus do it for your goodness come and do a new thing jesus do a new thing lord jesus thank you god thank you for who you are amen amen we'd also like to pray for a community that's particularly on our hearts at the moment and that's the community of refugees are coming to the solent area from afghanistan at the moment we want to pray for that nation of afghanistan we want to pray for the refugees that are with us in the solent area and we're going to just suggest a couple of ways that we can help practically in a moment but first of all can i ask you to pray with me let's pray together again the bible says that when we lift holy hands and call out to god that god hears our prayers and we have amongst us here a community of people thousands of refugees who've had to leave their hometown their home country and a country that is in fear and uncertainty let's lift our voices together now let's pray for the country of afghanistan and for the refugees that are here with us in the uk [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] yeah god we ask you will you come in mercy lord will you come in power lord will you be upon that nation of afghanistan law that's gone through such a tumultuous time at the moment lord god will you bring your protection lord particularly on christians that are living there but we pray lord god will you come will you protect the vulnerable will you protect those that are in fear lord will you bring peace we pray and safety and lord for those that are now in our community here in the solent lord and in the uk lord god for people have left their country maybe left their loved ones god we ask for your presence with them pray we pray the peace and the mercy and the grace of god upon this community lord god may they know they are welcomed among us may many come to faith in jesus lord as a result of being um in this country we pray lord god we cry in your mercy come and be with these people amen amen so how can we help we're going to be giving our offering now and if you'd like to give financially to help those refugees that are in the solent area we're going to be sending money out we just ask that you'd give a mark on your giving afghan or if you want to give through cash or check take it to reception at the end of the meeting but we're going to support these guys financially and stand with them financially as well as another way too yeah we've got an exciting opportunity to give to refugees refugee children in the city and we have got a load of school bags that are out in the reception area on a table and we're asking for people to take these away and inside there is a list of different things that you can put in the school bags and fill them up with practical stuff that can be given to a young boy or a young girl in our community so if you could take one of these we've got 60 of them out in the reception area fill them up throughout the week and then bring them back next week and that will be a way for us we're doing this as a town wide initiative to them bless refugee children in our city so those are out on the table at the back also if you're here this morning you don't know jesus i'd love to invite you to come on alpha as well starting this term to do that you can sign up through our website so just go to our website and all the details on there for you to sign up or if you're inviting someone this week just send them a link to the website and they can sign up to uh alpha through there if you'd like to take your seats we're gonna now hear the reading before andy comes up to speak to us so now you gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners your citizens along with all of god's holy people you are members of god's family together we are his house built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets and the cornerstone is christ jesus himself we are carefully joined together in him becoming a holy temple for the lord through him you gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where god lives by his spirit [Music] thanks wayne thanks janice so good to pray together god moves when his people pray if you were with us last sunday we were gathered with the totten site they're back in tottenham this week and of course with those watching online you would have heard me talk about the whole subject of vision god has called us to be a church that looks to see the solent the whole area around us geographically transformed as people encounter jesus and become his followers and we drilled it down into what we hope is a memorable acronym c s e e solent encounter equip and over the next three or so weeks we're going to shift the focus away from vision where we're going and on to values which is pretty much how we get there and again we're wanting to make it really memorable and accessible uh for us all and i'll come on to that in a moment but before we talk about values let me just say uh one or two things about our theology or what we believe as a local church as a group of christians if you want to know what we believe it's all there on the website but sometimes people don't find it that easily bottom line we are a church that believes the bible is the word of god and we base everything that we believe upon that reality we believe that god is trinity father son and holy spirit and that the father sent his one and only son the lord jesus christ into this world jesus is fully god fully man born of a virgin lived a blameless sinless life and then he died on a cross and three days later he rose again from the dead he died for our sins and he rose again as a vindication that all that he said about who he was is true he then rose and ascended to be with the father and he rules and reigns on our behalf in heaven today jesus is coming back for a glorious church and he's going to make all things new that's the fundamentals of what all christians believe and we hold to a historic faith that christians have held to for the last two thousand years over the next three weeks i want us to drill down on three particular values which are all beginning with f which again hopefully makes it memorable we're going to be talking about what it means to be family we're going to be talking about the freedom that jesus wants us to live in and we're going to be talking about what it means to be a people of faith this week we're going to be focusing particularly on what it means to be family together it's really important that we root that not simply in our experience but in what the bible says the passage that we heard read from ephesians 2 which we'll come on to in a moment talks about the church as the family of god and if we've been in church for many years maybe when you first joined either this church or some other local church it was very small this church was once very small and it's so easy to have rose tinted spectacles about the past greeted some people on arrival this morning who are from the church where janet and i used to be based and lead and when we first got to that church there were probably about 50 or so people it was about 16 years ago everyone knew everyone there are only 50 names to to learn and of course the same would have been true here back in village hall days 30 years ago and also when we built the building next door 20 or so years ago but we need to be clear that that is not that is not what the bible means when it describes the people of god the church as the family of god to understand the biblical concept of family you have to think differently just think for a moment about the old testament the first part of the bible where god's people are called the children of israel that's the phrase that more often than not describes the people of god in the old testament sometimes they're called jews that's an ethnic description they're a nation defined and shaped by their ethnic origins but most of the time they're described as the children of israel because they are the family of god that are directly descended from israel whose name was jacob but god changed it to israel they were not only descended from israel they were descended from israel's father isaac and from isaac's father abraham they were a family and they were a family that grew starts off with one man and one woman abraham and sarah and within two generations that have become twelve sons that became twelve tribes and within 400 years they had become a people that numbered 2 million plus but their growth their numerical growth never changed the reality that they were a family so we read in the book of exodus these are the names of the sons of israel and it lists the 12 tribes you get to verse seven of exodus one and it says this but their descendants the israelites had many children and grandchildren in other words the family is growing the family is getting bigger you fast forward 400 years or so and israel becomes a nation out of slavery that is a significant force in the middle east at that time ruled by king david but again i want you to see from one chronicles book in the old testament how god sees her you children of his servant israel you descendants of jacob his chosen ones he sees them first and foremost as his family now let's flick forward a thousand years you get a similar picture as jesus begins to form his people jesus takes 12 guys 12 disciples jewish by background he's establishing a new israel 12 disciples to parallel 12 tribes within a few weeks of the resurrection that 120 in the upper room has become a city-wide church of 3000 that is taking the good news that jesus is alive all over the mediterranean within a generation they've become a church family of tens of thousands of people right across the known world but the language of the new testament is always still family god is our father we are brothers and sisters jesus is our elder brother and that leads us nicely into the reading this morning paul if you noticed actually gives us not one picture but three pictures in that passage to describe us as the people of god he describes us as a nation he describes us as a temple and he describes us as a family and what i wanted to do this morning is just touch very lightly on what it means to be a nation and a temple and then spend much more time looking at what paul is meaning when he describes us as god's family first of all we are a nation that is no longer defined by ethnicity we are used to today nations comprising many different ethnicities we were all cheering last night i'm sure for emma radekanu and she is british and she's canadian and she's romanian and she's chinese and that's what we're used to in these days in the uk for example in london the most diverse city on the whole of the planet there are over a hundred nations across the globe all living in london but in bible times a nation was one people group but what paul is doing in ephesians chapter 2 is telling us that the church of jesus christ is one people one new nation one new tribe and this is radical stuff because he's talking to people who are jewish and to people who are gentiles who are non-jews and gentiles non-jews were outsiders they were not from the family of abraham they were far from god they were far from the people of god but through the gospel through the cross god has made us united with himself and with one another ephesians 2 but now in christ jesus you who are once far away have been brought near by the blood of christ for he himself is our peace he's made these two groups jews and gentiles one and he's destroyed the barrier the dividing wall of hostility by setting aside in his flesh the law with his commands and regulations his purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two thus making peace so the church is one new nation that is not defined by ethnicity second we are a new temple that is no longer a physical building as gentiles people like ours we were not allowed into the jewish temple proper only into the outer courts now because of jesus we're not just allowed in we are the temple because of his blood the temple is no longer physical stones but it is what peter calls living stones people stones this building is not the house of the lord we as god's people are the house of the lord we house we showcase the glory of god in the person of jesus christ through the holy spirit's presence this morning i love gathering together because god is here by the person of the holy spirit it's one of the reasons it's really important to physically gather then finally thirdly we are a family and that reality of us being church family defines our identity the family of god is not some little thing that gives us a cozy feeling that we know everyone in the room it's that we are the people of god and that the word family describes and identifies how we relate to god and how we relate to one another god is our father jesus is our elder brother who's gone before us and we are brothers and sisters together if you're here this morning or maybe you're watching online and you don't yet know jesus can i encourage you to follow through on wayne's invitation to come and explore jesus explore who jesus is through the alpha course that starts at the end of this month as family i want to give us six things that really help unpack what it means to be family first of all as family we are known being part of a church family does not mean that i know everyone but i it does mean that i am genuinely known by some we can feel under pressure that everyone needs to know everyone the reality is if we're really honest that wasn't even true when there were just fifty of us it's an illusion at a hundred or three hundred once we get above about 12 people and we go into two connect groups then we're not gonna know everyone really really closely we might know everyone's names but we're not really going to know everyone i have a friend actually who leads a church in london who does know everyone in his church he's the leader of what's called a strict and peculiar baptist church very very strict peculiar it's not a great name king's peculiar church it's not one i'd sign up to but anyway strict and peculiar they're really strict there are nine people in his church he knows everyone i'm not knocking them but that's the reality but once you're 12 or more you have connect groups so that you actually build relationally if you really want to know people and be known by people small groups connect groups are essential the church i grew up in in liverpool was um a pretty formal church really we had three church meetings on a sunday i went to all three i was into extreme church there was a midweek bible study there was a midweek prayer meeting i love bible study and i love prayer and i'd encourage you to come to the season of prayer this week but they never did connect groups they never did small groups so consequently relationships were superficial and formal if you want to get to know people in this church join a connect group reach out to people that you don't know especially people who are new good to see people with badges on this morning i know it's cringy i know it's embarrassing but it's a great opportunity to get to know one another's names if you want to belong to a group that's primarily about me and my friends that i've known for the last 20 years then i would suggest the local golf club or the local tennis club is a better bet than the local church the church is meant to be so so much more second the church the family of god is imperfect have you ever read the story of the founding fathers of the family of god in the old testament abraham lies twice to two different sets of people to try and pass sarah off as his sister isaac's family is the most dysfunctional family you could ever imagine mum and dad both had their favorites isaac preferred esau rebecca preferred jacob and the two boys are at each other's throats quite literally the ten brothers of joseph gang up on him most of them want him dead and then they settle for an easier option they sell him into slavery and they then break their father's heart by telling his father that joseph is dead all of that it's the stuff of soap opera but it reminds us not of how we should behave as the family of god but of the reality that god uses imperfect families god uses imperfect people like us kcc is a beautiful stunning church family but you know what we are not perfect we make mistakes we get things wrong and we need to ask one another's forgiveness just like joseph's brothers but we are family and love covers a multitude of sins next family is growing and diverse and this changes how the family relates together i come from a family of six mom dad me my little brother my elder sister and my younger sister we're now a family of 36. we used to all live under the same roof i think there's a picture just coming on the screen i'm the handsome one on the left yeah you might be able to just identify who's who there do you know what having grown from a family of six to 36 it looks very different now but it is still family just a couple of weeks ago one member of our bigger family we met for the very first time my nephew's new wife he married her just before covid hit they got married in peru because she's peruvian and then they did the honeymoon he came back to sort the visa out and they got stuck on opposite sides of the world for about 15 months and only very recently did we get the privilege of meeting her meanwhile my niece is dating a jamaican guy so a bit like kcc has grown and is more diverse my family has grown and is much more diverse and it's wonderful and we celebrate that we have to do things differently as a family we don't necessarily gather all that often all under one roof but we are still family and it's important that we don't allow tradition of the way that we did things in the past to have a greater pull than the vision that god has given us going forward you know nostalgia can be powerful but it can be toxic let's be a people who celebrate the new thing that god is doing right now family is present hebrews 10 let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works let's not neglect our meeting together as some people do but encourage one another especially now as the day of his return is drawing near let's be a people who prioritize being together although my family is now 36 so that we don't necessarily all of us get round the table on christmas day there are moments that we gather as a whole family weddings wedding anniversaries and birthdays and moments of celebration these things are prioritized priorities in my diary in the same way let's be a people who prioritize being together let's prioritize being in the room together online's good up to a point but it's not the same as physically being in the room with one another encountering the presence of god and if you're watching online today it's great to have you with us and i really encourage you when you're able to join us we love to see you in the room families are invested families demonstrate affection romans 12 don't just pretend to love others really love them love each other with genuine affection take delight in honoring each other when god's people are in need be ready to help them always be eager to practice hospitality let's look to work out what it means to be church family together in really practical ways i was listening just the other week to tim keller he's one of my favorite preachers and he was being interviewed keller's dying of pancreatic cancer and he said this in the interview he said to some extent i'm a celebrity sufferer people download my podcasts they listen to my preachers and they read my website but that is not what i need right now i do not need a website through which people can virtually identify with my suffering i need somebody in my church family who makes me chicken soup wow that's a really powerful statement of what it means to be family what it means to be community and last but not least families are united just listen to this psalm 133 how wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters live together in harmony for harmony is as precious as the anointing oil that was poured over aaron's head that ran down his beard poured onto the border of his robe harmony is as refreshing as the jew from mount hermon that falls on the mountains of zion see unity is real and unity is expressed and unity is felt just look at those powerful images of oil and jew physical things that are felt that express our unitedness together let's do all we can to play our part to maintain and develop the unity that god has given us as a local church we are family let's choose to live like family the impact will be felt not only in our lives but also in the communities around us there are hundreds and thousands of people all around us who are desperate right now for genuine community and the world gets changed one person at a time as people encounter jesus and become part of his family let's stand shall we we're gonna break bread in a moment but this is an opportunity before we break bread together just to focus jesus we are family because of his work on the cross because of his life his blood his death let's worship [Music] when i service [Music] [Music] of glory died my riches gained [Music] and poor contest [Music] pride [Music] that i should [Music] of christ my god [Music] us [Music] such a significant message from andy today and just as a member of this family i just was looking around just going wow what a privilege what a privilege it is to be part of the family of god what a privilege it is to know that because of what jesus has done that we are known and we are loved and we're chosen and we're accepted and we're going to take communion together now we're going to do it as a family so hopefully you've got a communion cup that you were given on the way in if you haven't just signal to one of the stewards and they will get you one but we're gonna break bread and we're gonna take wine and jesus said to do this in remembrance of him so as we break bread together and as we drink wine this morning let's remember jesus let's give thanks to who he is the one that made our way for us the one that went to the cross for each one of us so that we could know what it is to be his children today so let's take the bread together [Music] i break this
