sometimes I really feel that the world around us continues to be more hectic and more complicated and so many of us are truly craving to find simplicity and here in Queensland Australia that is exactly what a young couple discovered when they made the decision to build a tiny house on wheels [Music] hi Amy how are you hi how are you good lovely to meet you get a Greg how's it going named Matt nice to meet you Russ it's nice to meet you and super cool to see this beautiful home thank you we're really glad to have you here so how did you come to be living in a tiny house now well we actually found out about the movement through one of your videos so I was binge watching the videos and send one or two to Greg and then said hey why don't we build the Tony house and to my surprise he agreed and took that and ran with it before he could change his mind so yeah a few months sooner we had a tiny house of alright and you really have found a fantastic parking spot for the home as well yeah we're really lucky because one of our friends has been kind enough to just let us park up here on a property in one of their goat paddocks essentially so yes it's really nice we get a nice view it's very quiet and get away from a lot of the street noise and just peaceful yeah give this a bit of land as well to be able to have a veggie patch and everything like that so and we have that nice community spirit with her and can have a family dinner every fortnight I guess and what was it that made you really fall in love with the idea of living in a tiny house I think for us it's probably the simplicity of the lifestyle I think also the financial freedom so that's probably the biggest part for us we don't wanna be tied down to a job and then you know we can live the lifestyle we truly love yeah definitely yeah and tell me a little bit about the aesthetic of this home it's beautifully crafted well honestly most of it was Amy we did it mainly from everything from the outside is mainly based from around that giant window we decided that any room that we weren't going to have inside we were making sure that we could really spend a lot of time outside enjoying it so yeah I think I wanted something that kind of sink into the background so nothing that will stand out too much and I like to do the cedar the natural look at that and I think whilst they can still sink into the background and it doesn't stand out too much it's really quite striking and modern and we really did spend a lot of time when we were in a bigger house we spent a lot more time in our outdoor area as it was so we kept the same outdoor area and just made made a bit more space essentially than what we had so all of the decking is moduli so greg spent hours laboring away with pallet wood and everything so he could keep the the costs down and minimize that footprint on on everything as well so we've done that so if we ever need to move we can pull it all apart it would be a difficult task it wouldn't be simple but it can be done and we can take it to our next parking spot really good-sized water tank here as well yes so I think what I was key we managed to make it through the drought period that we were here only just before he got all that downfall which was great but having the two kids and ask we really needed a large tanks so we have got a third 10,000 litre tank they're color bomb so it wasn't plastic which is important for the quality of water for us and it ties in really nicely with the design of the house so that was a bonus and now most of the time you live here by yourselves but Greg sometimes you have your kids over as well don't you yes every second week for five days we have them my son who's turning 13 this year and my daughter who is 10 we thought they'd have a bit of trouble adapting to her but it was honestly very smooth when we introduced them to the house they got excited and then it was like yay we have somewhere to sleep now let's go play outside and so what size is the tiny house so this one is 7.2 meters long that's 2.4 wide and about 4.2 high so we try to keep it all with the legal specs to be able to happen on the road well the house is just beautiful from the outside I really love this wonderful entertaining deck that you've built onto it and I cannot wait to see what you've got going on inside should we check it out yes let's take a look all right thank you [Music] this is gorgeous thank you we are very proud of it it's especially beautiful just walking in and immediately being greeted by this very comfortable looking lounge yeah I'm comfort was the main goal with this so we found that in our regular-sized house we spent a lot of time in the lounge room on the couch watching movies playing games of the kids so we needed a cow so it could accommodate all four of us and be comfortable so we designed that layout actually on the lounge room based off the sizes of this couch so the chaise does double as storage which is always important in your tiny house absolutely the bed obviously it pulls out from under there as well which is great to have that extra sleeping space if you need it we actually find that we'd spread that out more often than yeah do you like to have more family time really we spend more time with it out just hanging out like that rather than just in this l-shaped couch well actually that what's amazing no games yeah sounds good to me and lots of Windows here giving you really nice views into the outdoors yeah we really want to capitalize on the view and bring in as much natural light as possible for a tiny house I think if it's small I can feel even smaller if it doesn't have that natural light and that just makes it feel airy and bright and it doesn't make you feel so claustrophobic I think and then we also get a beautiful cross breeze which is a essential or not whether he also that helps as well keeps the place cool yeah it certainly is essential because the weather here you really do get some extremes don't you the last few months we've had floods and droughts so you know this has been a great way to be able to still keep coolant and keep that electricity bill down so yeah and then you've got a really good sized kitchen here yes so we do a lot of meal prepping so we thought we would like a big bench I think that was key for us cuz we do the meal prepping together so we need to be able to work together in this space at one time and then it also doubles as a great space to be able to work and have our food as well study space so originally we made sure this bench space that is at the end here was mainly just so that we could do work or study there as well so we've got space to do it yeah and we also want to have a lot of overhead cupboard space there as well for storage and try to keep a nice and tidy rather than an open shelving just because it gets quite dusty out here Sariah and it's so lovely how this window here can just completely open the kitchen up to the outdoors yeah so we actually designed a lot of the house around that bifold window there and when it opens up it really does brings the outside in we use it a lot with if we have friends over we meal prep here and just hand the meals over out there and we can all still talk and communicate together and this sort of starts to feel more like an island bench in the kitchen rather than a wall separating you guys and its really cool and then really good sized appliances here in the kitchen full-size fridge and lots of storage that's been built into the stairs there too yes so this was a little bit to get it to work the fridge was from our previous standard house and we want to keep that just because we like the design of the french space being on the top we've popped our microwave in here which is keeping it nice and well hidden also has extra stories for chopping boards and bread which is really great to keep the cabinet's nice and clear up here the rest of the storage shower is actually for our clothing and then behind these baskets we've got quite a deep space here so we can't hide extra items like a blender in there as well it's the clothing and a spot up there well the dog stuff as well keeps it all neat and tidy and keeps our benches clear which is really good yeah and because we like to food prep so much not downsizing on the oven was essential for us as well so we need to make sure that we kept that up in the right size we downgraded to the two burner stove but that wasn't an issue really because yeah like we do things out of a slow cooker or the oven the rest of the time so it wasn't really a problem and the other stories that we really love and here is actually I'll pull up pantry so a lot of work went into that and we actually measured out how thick we needed it to be just fit jars in and everything so make the most of that space as well then we've got the loft above us here yes so that was actually in addition that we added to the standard design with this one we needed to have a space for the children as well so that's really great because they can have their own space and be apart from us but there is still part of the family unit we chose not to enclose it just so I could have that open feel and also to limit it getting too hot up there with the cross breeze as well and then through there we have your bathroom and it's really nice how you've created this full-length louver window yes the window we wanted to create a space I guess where from one end of the house to the other it was really open-ended so when you are sitting in the lounge room and looking through you just see straight out into nature and it doesn't just cut the house off and feel like it suddenly ends great so surely you've got in here yes so it's not quite the same as a 900 it's think a 20 by 8 20 so a little bit smaller than normal but we have a beautiful waterfall shower head which makes it really luxurious to have a shower in there we also have the addition of another louver window there just to try to bring the inside out again and also to extract some of that steam which can cause a bit of trouble in a tiny space as well so fields are very lovely having a shower in there actually probably better than our own else one of the best shares will you ever had in that thing so yeah it's amazing and then it's great to see you've got the composting toilet here yes so that was probably our favorite thing about the house but really yeah it was the toilet when we ask that question yeah I think it's just that it's so unique and design and being in a drought area I guess it's so great with the water usage so much yeah we think that was one of the things that helped us get through a part of that drought period before we started to get all the floods was the fact that we did not have a flushing toilet be like we were getting very close at the end of our tank and we thankfully got the rain but yeah the composting toilet like it it doesn't use water to get rid of it it's it's so much easier and great to see you've got the washing machine there as well standard size and size that's it old house as well don't really Wilson have to buy new appliances no need for a dryer in this climate so we just hang everything up outside on a deck or in the Sun so we do make sure that we use a lot of the eco friendly dishwashing liquids and a laundry detergent is the same as well so that when it runs off to our gray water because we use that out in our grasses and gardens and things like that we all help yeah not putting anything toxic out into the environment as well of course they recycle all the water we can here yeah and then really nice size vanity in here as well yes so I think every girl wants a nice big Jannetty so this was kind of my brainchild I wanted the pendant lights and the shelving for my beauty products I'm a big nice thing to be able to wash my face and do my makeup and I think it just it works really well as well all the kids generally getting the kids ready for school there's two of them in the bathroom it's nice and B they can both still brush their teeth through the hair joenie ashore at the same time no one's fighting and yeah that's good and then upstairs we've got your sleeping loft yes a little sanctuary this is just so cozy up here and having that skylight is just lovely isn't it yeah this this loft is it's it's our sanctuary and this skylight really just makes it what it is it brings in all that light yeah I think even compared to our bedrooms at the previous homes this is probably the most comfortable and luxurious that we've had we invested in a good mattress that was a little bit for now so I could gain a little bit of extra room and yeah it's lovely experience being up here I think that a lot of people see sleeping lofts and they immediately kind of freak out and say I could never do that but there really is something which is just so cozy and comfortable about climbing into a loft and you feel so protected in this space like this don't you totally agree it's like an astronaut safe I think if we had have enclosed maybe the front portion of it might feel a little bit more cost of acquiring and Brian I think you know we don't feel confident or anything like that it's very open the view that we have is quite nice as well and we get the views out to the sides and that night we get the the night sky it's it's amazing up here it's not anything to really be worried about it's one of those things that we need to look forward to yeah I think a lot of people are nervous about the transition to a loft style and it's probably not ideal for people with mobility issues but the stairs are easy to navigate we haven't had any issues got a handrail there on everything to help so yeah it's been an easy transition and so how long have you been living in the tiny house now I think we're going on just on six months now I've built I'm living in the tiny house so it's gone really fast actually we didn't week actually can believe we went like four months without a TV yeah and I think in another sense that also doesn't feel like it's only been six months yeah you know it was an easy change of lifestyle change of pace and and it's just been such an easy transition into it that I think it feels like this is something we've been doing for years and I think we spent such a long time in the design phase and the builders work so closely with us I don't think there's anything that's gone into this that isn't a well thought-out process yeah a lot of people ask us you know are you over the tiny house yet and happiness with the design everyday yeah and the lifestyle bothers absolutely and can we talk a little bit about price what did this cost to build so all up we spend about a hundred thousand so that included the build furnishings the water tank delivery so significantly less than a mortgage everything that we pay for daily or sorry monthly now as well has significantly dropped like electricity prices like we're not off-grid yet but we do plan on this being a solar-powered house eventually as well with water like we say we've got a ten thousand litre tank and that gets us by fine it's just been a very comfortable transition with money-wise as well like the expenditures going out is another thing that made it very comfortable yeah absolutely and so what does the future hold for you both now honestly hopefully a lot more travel and exploring and living life and enjoying it so hopefully the freedom that comes with this Tony will allow us to become financially free as well and have a five-year plan hopefully and buy a big block of our own and yeah to see where it takes us I guess yeah we're excited to be able to hopefully take this over to a bigger block and yeah I don't think we could never do a normal sized house over again though it'll always stick with oh yeah we'll definitely be doing a lot more living again now because we can yes it's really opened up a lot of freedom in our lives and seems weird to say that I moved into a small house so now I'm more free but like once you do what you really get it you know it's becomes about the lifestyle opposed to doing that daily grind to pay for a house that you don't get to enjoy which we thoroughly do enjoy yes absolutely I think living in this home it's taught us something that we maybe didn't expect I guess our transition to tiny living was born from a mold tragic time in our life you know the passing of well my father and everything it caused us to to question how we were living life in what direction we were going you know we didn't want to sit back in 50 years time and realize that we had waste of time with our family and loved ones and you know gone through the daily grind and had an enjoyed life so it's really it's been an opening experience it generally comes down to time like the experience of being in this house it comes down to how much time we have now we have time together we have time to just be in a sense where we're not worried about the hustle and bustle of daily life where where I would relax together we're able to problem-solve together we're able to just be together and I think make the most of every day yeah not promised tomorrow so hmm you got to live for the now you really have just built such a beautiful home for yourself and it's wonderful to see that whether you've also built some wonderful options for your future thank you so much for sharing your home with me thank you for coming out Bryce my pleasure Amy and Gregg truly have built themselves such a beautiful home here but more than just a home they've built an entire lifestyle around it one that offers the more financial freedom more connection with nature greater connection with one another and things that are truly innately important to them in life and really that is such a beautiful thing [Music] you
