welcome back to the bike made for you instructional video how to unstick a seat post part what uh this one we probably should have started in the beginning so maybe i'm going to call this one like 1a or something like that we're going to go into what exactly is inside of a suspension style seat post the kind of post that's in your entry level giant hybrids uh trek hybrid specialized hybrids you know the 500 600 dollar models and down from there the suspension type post that goes in that we have been having a bear of a time trying to get out we got all kinds of tools under the sun including the old heat wrench out uh maybe you might want to stay tuned i'm sure we're going to be using this in an upcoming episode but not today's episode because today we're going to go on to what the heck is inside of these things we're having a bear of a time trying to get these out we've had two successful seat post extractions one failure and we're in process with another one so let's head up on and head up onto the the workbench and uh wrap onto the uh deck over here i can't forget my beer and uh let me show you what's going on while you're coming around there son of a you might want to show them that uh the bus locations we've had here are you going to go here like that over my shoulder boulder holder here are you with me all right did you show them the the failure we had yep you show them the success we had all right so there's your suspension seat post it has this little grippy thing here on the top and it also has a thing on the bottom of an allen key type that's giving you a preload adjustment and if you wanted to make it harder or softer squishier you would screw this thing in which would compress the spring so that way it would be tougher to push it down or unscrew it out to make it looser okay let me give you a little show of what's going on here what's inside this thing okay and what we're contending with now son of his idea just to after we after we saw this off we try to get the guts out of there is to try to just push this thing through so that way we can get the sawzall blade right down the whole thing i don't know man it's a pretty fine thread and there's quite a few of them in there and to blow those things through the thread with a punch or a drift or a big ass hammer or whatnot it ain't gonna happen now notice how i got a nice clean work bench and i have a little piece of paper out here so that we all can see exactly how these things come out so you got the cap nut then you got a little guy here like that then you got a spring there's a little plastic sleeve thing around that spring to help it glide and it's considerable amount of grease to help it glide in and out of the suspension on here okay and then inside of here we have a another allen key which is holding the mechanism onto the shaft ooh i might have to get up and go get a smooth weight longer sorry guys be right back talk about yourselves so you having fun today yep we had some great episodes today some really good uh some really good footage on some of this stuff it's really quite interesting i think trying to get these sandy bikes back into action all right so there's a allen key a six millimeter job right down the pipe if you have to stick this end into a vise or something like that oh man that's tight i brought these over just in case this post is kind of a junker that was i found in the i need 10 hands where's the pipe all right so now you unscrew this little piece that's in here and again we're going to get to i guess i got to keep it going in the direction that we're at keep the stuff in the direction that it's going okay then comes a plastic sleeve and another bolt the bolt is kind of special in the fact that it has a big fat washer and it's pretty thick so that it can be received inside of that spring like that and then this goes into here like that and then if we unscrew this all the way give us a little jiggle that comes out and then this comes out so this is on to here like this and this we get a little groove going on here yeah and here how's that for a little schematic action huh what am i doing all right so then you got this thing here and this thing here and then this thing here right and this thing now is right down the pipe in the middle we have a little plastic thing plastic insert here every once in a while this thing comes out of here and the people can't get it back in and we can't it's always a pain in the neck um we always just go with a brand new post take out the old and put in the new because usually something let loose inside of here but there's the anatomy of a seat post and how it works when this sleeve is on here and this is into there like that whoops it's got to go the right way though square peg round hole uh so when this thing is into here and it's going up and down like this what happens is that this goes onto here like this this goes on to here like this this goes into here like this and when this gets smooshed all the way down onto here because that's into there this expands and that's what keeps this in check does that make sense yes no maybe yeah so there is how it all operates on a suspension style suitcase this is on here's what i was looking for really before there to there to there and then this screws into that and it just tightens it and expands these plastic pieces so that it goes smooth in between here big ass spring that's for sure other than that nothing that aluminum so we got to try to get this stuff all the junk out of here at least to make it hollow so that we could try to get these posts out looks like we had one that was a disaster one that we got a success and one that we're working on currently so if we copped it off right here there's still some all of that stuff is still going in there i think maybe we could probably jiggle it all out maybe possibly and that's what we're going to try to do on the next one so anatomy of a suspension seat post there you have it i hope you enjoyed yourselves um never fear the bike man for you is here
