[Music] hello furniture refinishing friends this is shannon with black sheep house today's video i'm doing another dark dresser i did a black dresser with general finishes where i showed you guys some innovative ways to avoid brush strokes and that was a really big hit of a video i also received so many comments from you guys saying that i should try adding my paint to my clear top coat to avoid streakiness and while the technique that i used in the last video worked great for avoiding streakiness i thought hmm that'll be fun to try something new and different and so i decided to try this technique and it worked great i'm really excited to share it with you guys let's get started this dresser needed a little bit of repair for the dresser drawer and then i don't know if you guys saw in the beginning there but i pulled out some drugs it was just like some basic medication for somebody that they left in there but anyway um you never know what you're gonna find in a dresser i also noticed that i when i pulled the bottom drawer out i actually broke this little plastic thing um i was i don't know i know better than to do that i know when the drawer is hard to pull out like that that it's one of those plastic things anyway if you don't know that's why i videoed this little part so you can see that little doohickey there you have to push it down to get the drawer all the way out this dresser drawer the bottom one wouldn't close all the way and when i took the drawer out and vacuumed it and stuff i found this weird block and i think it's supposed to serve some sort of purpose like keeping the drawer from going in too far or something but it was just keeping the drawer poking out you know you guys know i am using my favorite oxi palmolive dish soap to clean the dresser i give it a good clean with the dish soap and then i wipe it clean with a wet washcloth also you guys are so helpful i i really am over using this wood filler that i've been using i just don't think it does a great job so please leave in the comments what you guys use for filling holes i just need a better product i'm not super happy with the smoothness that i'm getting i mean it was fine like it's fine i can sell this piece and and everything it's not bad but i i just i feel like there can be better and i do so much hole filling and little repairs and stuff that i need a good product so let me know i'm gonna vacuum this thing and then i always use a tack cloth too even though it wasn't shown in the video i'll use a tack cloth on the whole piece right before i start painting i found this paint on amazon and it was kind of a whim to buy it i figured it was sort of a dupe for the general finishes milk paint and i really liked it don't get me wrong today's video will show that i really liked it but general finishes is better so i'm still kind of a general finishes girl i'm using general finishes flat out flat for my top coat but if you're you know on a budget this was 20 and the general finishes is more like 35 dollars so you could save a little bit of money first things first i want to get it on there with my zebra paintbrush you guys know i'm such a big fan of the zebra two inch i usually usually use the stubby but this one's a little bit longer and that's fine i'm going to be using a foam roller a high density foam roller once i get the paint on to roll it out and this is where maybe i get my name you know black sheep for in the furniture painting community and in the painting community period they are not fans of you taking a foam roller and just rolling a bazillion times over the paint um but it really works for me i don't know if it's just the paint that i'm using or my technique so i want to go into a little bit of detail about exactly what i do that makes this work so well for me um so what i do is i go over with pressure at first you see me i'm i'll go sideways i'll go up and down really i'm just trying to spread the paint out evenly i don't think that this would work if you were like out in the sun because i feel like the paint would dry too fast but i'm working my garage and my paint i mean i'm in georgia so i don't know paint might dry a little bit faster or slower here i don't know but it really works for me um i put it on there with the paintbrush i'll go over it with the foam roller with some pressure and then towards the end going it going over it with the foam roller i do lighten up my pressure quite a bit so i'm basically just moving the roller back and forth and it's like way light pressure and i feel like that's how i get the smooth finish without any lines i also use the foam rollers that have rounded edges and i feel like that makes a big difference as well i'm going to link the ones that i use i either get them at home depot or walmart but i'll try to find like the exact ones they are white and yeah so you want to get it on there now people always ask me how can you paint the why didn't you take the drawers out and i started not taking the drawers out for youtube um filming just made it a lot easier but before that i did usually take the drawers out and do it that way but now i've gotten really good at doing it with the drawers in because of that and now i just even if i wasn't filming and i do mini projects that i don't film i don't have time to film all of them and um yeah i just leave the drawers in there are some particular dressers that you just can't do that with but most i mean 9 out of 10 dressers you can usually do it with the drawers then so it just when you're applying it you don't want to like gush it up in the corners and stuff so anyway like i said earlier i apply it with a little bit of pressure at first to just get it nice and smooth and then i'll go over it with very very little pressure like very little and then practically zero pressure i basically will just like lay the roller you know just to keep it from falling off and i'll roll it back and forth so hopefully that makes sense to you guys but yeah i go over it a ton of times if i don't then there's bubbles so this is just one way that has really works just it just works for me so i don't know i get really smooth finishes i can work quickly i can cover a lot of ground quickly and you can see i just use like a long screw i'll pull the drawer out and then i'll go around the edges i usually do this immediately because when you painted it with the drawers on you get a little bit of like you know pooling and drips and things like that that kind of went in between so i had to show you guys the real workspace here a lot of people will comment and say why would you ruin your nice wood floor and it's because i got that floor out of the trash and i just use it for my staging area i am working on kind of upgrading my staging area for selling that's a really if you sell furniture and you don't have an area to like stage your furniture you can just put it i used to for like the first two years of my business i just put it in front of my garage door so i i would just lay down like a big piece of um i had this actually like a curtain that i would lay on the cement and then i would close my garage door and take pictures there you know i it was such a pain my husband and i would have to like move it out there and it had to be at the exact time of day that was best for photos it's kind of a pain but it is a great way to take pictures i do not recommend taking pictures inside unless you have professional lighting or you have really good lighting so my workspace is actually inside a garage and where the camera is right now and this filming is actually like in the driveway looking into the garage so that's why it has such good light and this has become the best spot i've found for taking pictures and for filming because i have all that natural light from outside but i have um you know cover from from the garage and i'm pretty sure there's several other furniture artists and youtubers that um film this way as well but if you're a furniture artist selling furniture you might consider scoping out a spot that's just inside the garage by the wall or you know maybe right inside the garage and building a wall behind it kind of thing that way you can have really good lighting all right so my technique again just a little bit of pressure at first i'm trying to even out the paint you can see i'm i'm using quite a bit of pressure and then you'll see me really really loosen up with that pressure and i'll also only work horizontally for the front and then i'll i'll work vertically for the sides sometimes i do horizontal for the sides as well but i found that with this salt with solid colors that going vertically works best okay so here is your guys's awesome technique we're mixing in the clear coat and the milk paint how much that you choose to do i think is your call i did about one i think was like a one to three ratio so one let's say it's one cup of paint it would have been three cups of clear coat that i did and i felt like that really worked well for me i also you guys know from my other video you can just apply the clear coat straight on as well and you can watch my other video to get that technique but i really wanted to use your guys's suggested technique and i i actually i'm a big fan it worked really well so i got these off amazon i will link these they were a little bit too big but luckily they give you two holes to choose from and then with this little excess part i'm just going to snip it off with some scissors these are really trendy and i've been seeing a lot of furniture flippers use these and yeah i really like them i think they were less than a dollar a piece by the time i um bought a pack of like 20. all right here is the finished product and i'll give you a little reminder of the before a little bit outdated but nice and solid bones and the after super happy with how this turned out thanks so much for all of you guys who commented that i should add the paint to my clear coat i love how that turned out you guys let me know in the comments if you have any more tricks up your sleeve and i definitely need a recommendation for wood filler like i said i love this project i think that the general finishes milk paint is superior but rust-oleum is a good dupe i'll see you guys in the next video
