This is the less sexy reality of it. Part of being a prepared person is medical training. I've used my medical training as part of my carrying and 2a activities to sit with a woman and monitor for brain trauma or injury until paramedics arrived to a car accident.

Training is weightless, you can't leave it behind and as long as you keep up on it, you can't lose it.

Learn emergency first aid, learn how to deal with arterial bleeds, learn how to deal with a sucking chest wound, learn CPR. You might save someone's life some day and that is always preferred to having to take one.

One thing I try to bring up when this topic arises: carry an aspirin with you. Statistically speaking, you are far more likely to be present for a heart attack than a DGU. Chewing and swallowing an aspirin can decrease the likelihood of death or serious heart damage during a cardiac event by up to 70% if provided at the onset, and it's smaller than a coin, and much smaller than a gun or tourniquet.

Thanks for posting. This is good info.

I would recommend all people living in rural areas take a wilderness first aid course. Preferably a more in depth one, like the ones offered by Wilderness Medical Associates, but the Red Cross one is OK if you can't put in the time.

This class is free, that should warrant enough to take it. I learned what I needed to know.

I'd love to sign up for one of these but the local one appears to be on permanent wait-list so I signed up to express my interest or some such.

Thank you for posting this. Not everybody should carry a firearm, but everyone should know how to stop someone from bleeding out.
