if you have a wi-fi extender you're probably using it wrong you see we get wi-fi extenders and we get wi-fi repeaters and they look the same are supposed to get us better wi-fi areas where there is none but they're slightly different and it's that difference that makes a big difference now it certainly doesn't help that companies are using the terms interchangeably so today let's look at wi-fi extenders wi-fi repeaters so you don't buy the wrong product and wonder why you spent this money okay let's do this hey guys welcome back to the channel if this is your first time here my name is leron segev where i talk about wi-fi and gadget and tech tips and phones and how to if you're into that kind of stuff hit that subscribe button below and let's get on to today's show so the idea behind both the extender and the repeater is the same you get wi-fi where there is none however they both go about it slightly differently and this is the important bit so let's start with the extender in order for a wi-fi extender to be effective it actually should be connected via a lan cable to your router and that's the bit that people usually don't do and get it wrong you see it's this hard connection that allows you to get super fast internet super reliable and that's what gives you those golden internet wi-fi speeds the extender becomes a wi-fi access point and i'm going to show you all this shortly now typically a wi-fi extender carries its own wi-fi network which have an ext extension name in the wi-fi so we need to tell our devices to connect to the extender whenever we're in the room where you're trying to get that wi-fi connectivity on the other hand a wi-fi repeater typically isn't connected via a lan cable it picks up your existing wi-fi signals and transmits it or re-broadcast that signal however a wi-fi repeater needs to receive a strong wi-fi signal in order to repeat it so the further that you are away from the router the weaker the signal is and therefore it's trying to transmit a weak signal already usually we've seen that signals get reduced by as much as half now not all wi-fi repeaters are the same some are better built so they do a much better job good repeaters will have at least two antennas that they can use to listen and transmit at the same time now crappy repeaters do one than do the other so their performance is just terrible adding to this whole confusion is the fact that newer extenders the one that actually should be physically plugged in via lan cable also work as repeaters in other words you don't actually have to plug the lan cable in so when you set it up you simply plug it into the wall socket pick up your old wi-fi and then think that you're doing a good job with your extender that's where the problem begins so let me show you the difference i'm gonna take an extender and set it up without the lan cable then i'm gonna take the same extender with the lan cable and let's see what it does to our wi-fi and internet speed right let the test begin i am connected to the extender it does not have a lan cable that is how typically people would set this up and you can see i'm connected to the nutella server this has been sped up and you can see 9 milliseconds is a ping 53.45 megabits per second as the download and the upload is now set at 23.07 okay now i'm going to change it to the way it's supposed to be i'm going to change it to the ap mode and let me do that whilst it's doing this i'm going to go and connect the lan cable into it and now we're going to run a second test let's see what the difference is going to be if there is a difference so let's double check i'm still connected to that same extender it is still the nartel server so it's like for like and we're going to click the go button is there a difference well yes clearly there is megabits per second on the download and the upload should be roughly the same because it's kept right i've unplugged the extender i've plugged in the repeater in the exact same plug socket so it's getting the same wi-fi same connectivity stole the nartel server let's run a speed test now already we can see that the ping is 44 milliseconds so it's already a huge difference even the download speed nowhere near what i was getting before so i just just by this test alone you can see there's a difference in an extender and a repeater when it's plugged in versus when it's not and there you have it so when you're deciding between the two if you're able to hardwire the extender that is the ideal for best performance if you're not well you might as well go for a repeater it's just cheaper but remember don't place it at the very edge of your wi-fi place it somewhere in the middle so that you're still getting a good signal for it to rebroadcast giving you much better connectivity when you do pick up that repeater hope that was very useful so you can make the right decision in the description below i've got some links to some more repeaters extenders mesh network and i'm even going to show you how to use your old router as an extender check out the links down here if you want more wi-fi tips and tricks check out these videos down here
