i get the the privilege of introducing my friend uh nathan finocchio to you who's here today interesting story pastor nathan was here a year ago it's literally been 52 weeks since normal ended and so this is that week he was the last speaker we had live uh a year ago and we had gone to four services packed house we were setting records of numbers and so all of that happened a year ago and nathan preached and then the whole world changed so i'm i'm believing for some big things by what he preaches today and i wanted to shift the other way come on am i right about that and so i'm really excited he uh runs a thing online called theos university uh short name is theos you and it's like a netflix app that you can download and uh you can get uh content that's biblical theology to grow in your faith learn what the bible teaches about all kinds of topics he'll tell you about it a little bit but it's really great i 100 endorsed this and they also have theos seminary and we got people in our church including my son austin is taking classes on their online seminar it's a great platform and to have somebody here with us today that's that relationship with us but thinks clearly about what the bible says and is able to articulate that as a gift and i want you to give them a huge even if you're online start hitting the like button and whatnot and make a comment welcome nathan and everybody here give a big clap welcome to nathan pinocchio as he comes up okay thank you pastor matt hi everyone good morning um doomsday preacher is really my nickname i guess from now on that's great is that fair yeah sure go for it um that is so funny man i remember flying home uh last year and it was uh i had to fly back to sydney is actually what was happening right yeah and i was going back to australia which is where i was i was at last summer we my wife my wife is australian so we try to go back there during the winter as often as we can because it's their summer and you know she gets to see her her grandparents and her cat um it's hilarious um and i remember being on a flight and the tennis in palm springs where i live was cancelled that year uh indian wells is that what it's called so all these tennis stars were on my flight on the way home i remember just being like this is weird like if tennis is cancelled maybe this is worse than i think it is so anyhow i apologize for bringing that and hopefully i'm bringing tidings of great joy um that things are going to begin to open up so cool um so i'm canadian i actually really love your town i was telling the the early service like my parents are pastors sorry i'm sucking this lozenge and it's helping me my my throat um my dad's a pastor in a small town in northern ontario the town's name is harrison you've probably never heard of it just 1800 people there it's an agricultural community so 1800 is probably including livestock we have one light in town it's pretty cool um we have a subway so that's pretty nice and um so my parents i i'm i like i like small towns this is a much larger town like this would be going into the city for us because you guys have like a mall semi mall but uh i was just remarking i just i love your town but i i'd love your pastors even more so i love i love matt and lisa i mean they are so my brother-in-law we're after sushi last night we're going back and my brother-in-law who's he's here with me he's not in this service right now he's a slacker and he's sleeping in the hotel room um but he he remarked he's like matt and lisa like how old are they and alejandro who's hosting us is kind of like uh you know x amount of years i'm just gonna protect you there lisa 31 um and uh and brian's just like they they just seem so young um and i just think it's like i it's like they're they're matt's a big kid that's how i describe him to everybody he's just like this big kid and like he i he just exudes joy and life and it's authentic it's like it's not put on as you get to know him this is really who he is like just listen to him talk about star wars i mean this guy's a real nerd and um so anyways i just love you guys so much and austin and alejandro i'm just thankful for you guys and i just love your church and so it's always a privilege and an honor to come here and hang out with you guys um and your barbecue's incredible here we didn't do the barbecue yet but that place that you take me to where you can get one beef rib and it's like the size of my head that's insane what's that called porter's michael if you've not been there do yourself a favor okay so so i i run this thing right now uh as pastor matt said fayoseu.com or theyosu.ca is actually what it is t-h-e-o-s-u dot c-a and essentially we distill bible college courses so from uh let's say uh uh romans lecture would be like 36 hours we'd make that like eight hours and we sort of distill this content so people can come and they can take it and um and folks pay 14 a month to have unlimited access to like all the courses and we add two new courses every month and we have about 4 000 students from across the world right now and growing and i think it's a good trade you know where we get these teachers you can if you want to nerd out you can take greek exegesis if you're like a super nerd um you know if you want to brush up on the on the transgenderism uh theology and what do we believe and how do we talk to transgender people how do we think about them et cetera so we have hot topics like that and so i think it's um it's a great resource for for people who want to grow you know in their faith and in their knowledge of the lord jesus said to love the lord with all your mind so that's an important thing right um okay let's get into it ready if you're taking notes today um and people who take notes get into heaven early there's like a vip section with non-alcohol alcoholic cocktails i'm kidding there's it's liquor obviously it's heaven um that's ridiculous it's a bad joke okay stop it um if you're taking notes then um the the title of this talk is stonks stonks okay stonks is what the kids are calling stocks it's just more fun to say stocks how are your stonks doing um and i wanna i wanna talk to you about the kingdom of god and how it's the best investment ever let's pray and we're gonna get into this father thank you for your word and holy spirit i ask you that as we read the bible today that you would speak like you always do and we're so thankful for your presence today jesus amen it's been a long time since bitcoin was valued at less than a thousand dollars i checked in between services and bitcoin is worth fifty thousand dollars right now per coin so it's almost hard to appreciate just how much its value climbed up over the last number of years the story of christopher cook should be able to put things into perspective for us this morning in 2009 christopher was busy writing his master thesis on encryption technology at his university in norway while researching the latest applications of encryption he came across the unknown virtual currency called bitcoin if you're not familiar with cryptocurrencies cryptocurrencies are essentially a type of currency kind of like a dollar but they are decentralized so they're not attached to economies and they're growing in fame at the moment and people are worried that there's going to be huge bubbles etc um you know they're they're kind of protected by a number of different things long story short christopher is he's in university and while he's researching encryption he comes across bitcoin and determined to experience firsthand uh what bitcoin was all about he decided to spend around 26 dollars this is in 2009 which allowed him to purchase 5 000 bitcoins so so mind you that bitcoin is worth 50 000 each right now okay for twenty six bucks he bought five thousand of them uh then he just forgot you know i mean it's like it was just this new technology he's like yeah i'll spend i'll buy five thousand of them for 2016. you know what i mean like i just went went about his business uh forgot about his investment moved on with his life and then he remembers four years later in 2013 when the mainstream medias began to talk about bitcoin like every day people started talking about bitcoin he remembered i think i bought some bitcoin you know like and so after spending an entire day searching for the correct password to his encrypted bitcoin wallet which these bitcoin wallets are hilarious you get two goes at entering the right password on the second try if you don't get it right your bitcoins are forever gone there are people who have entered in a wrong password and they have billions in bitcoin and they don't know the next password and they're literally just waiting they're just like like it's hilarious it's cruel but wonderful so after searching for you know his his password christopher struck gold found his password and quickly exchanged one-fifth this was in 2013 one-fifth of his investment for 886 thousand dollars so a thousand bitcoins at the time um nearly a million bucks and he used the money to buy himself a a cozy apartment in oslo norway and then he went on to become like a kind of an investor etc um and just kind of begin to watch his bitcoins grow and you know the value etc he's got 4 000 left and today that's worth 200 million dollars 26 bucks that's pretty good return it's pretty good return kingsley advani created his fortune last year by selling his worldly possessions uh such as laptop headphones emptied his savings account and basically took like it was about 34 grand and put it into bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies at the beginning of 2017 and he turned this investment of 34 grand into like a low seven figure sum he worked at a software uh firm and every month would put as much of his salary as possible the dude would eat top ramen and just put all of his salary you know not making much money but everything just buy crypto buy credit or by crypto in october last year he quit his job and he now travels the world as an advisor and angel investor his initial investment just as of october last year which is would have grown significantly was worth 15 million what would you do right now if you knew that bitcoin would be 50 000 per coin in 10 years from now and it was worth you know you could buy 5 000 of them for 26 right i think i know exactly what we'd all do we wouldn't just invest 26 would we no i would be like kingsley i would be selling anything everything i'd have a yard sale all my stuff would be out there you know what i mean like i'd be selling everything that i have i'd be selling shoes i'd have i just have one pair of pants one t-shirt literally i'd be pulling buck buttons off you know what i mean like and then i'd be go to other people and i go hey man you know invest invest in this and then i'd be pleading with people to invest right if i knew that that's the kind of return i'm get i yeah it's a no-brainer you remember in um i believe it's back to the future too with the almanac right remember biff he he he he goes back in time he takes an almanac from the future and then invests all his money right and becomes rich from sports betting i love that little bit like that's that's what we do if we could go back in time to do that 2009 one thousand percent often times when we are reading the parables we tend to over allegorize um for example the pigs in the prodigal son i think there's like a demon in that door back there it's amazing um the pigs and the prodigal son represent the demonic for example or the father's ring and coat they represent authority and what we can do is we can be reading these parables and we're assigning all these various different values to things but we can oftentimes miss the big point of the parables if that makes sense and the problem is that jesus is trying to communicate a big idea which we become oblivious to the parables of jesus in general are employed to accomplish two things number one to remind us of impending doom as in like dude like bad things are coming bad things are coming like something something's about to end and then number two remind us of an immediate escape okay you can get out of this every parable then is a vehicle for jesus to announce the kingdom already like the kingdom's come the kingdom's common and so you need to make a decision in theology we say that the kingdom is already but the kingdom is not yet as in when the day that jesus came he inaugurated his kingdom because wherever the king is the kingdom is that makes sense okay but there's going to be a culmination of the kingdom where um all things the way the apostle paul puts it is that all things are not yet under his feet if that makes sense okay so jesus is going to put all things under his feet he's going to rule over there but there are still some rebellions happening right now so it's still his kingdom but everything is going to be set to right right when jesus returns in theology when we talk about salvation it's the same thing it's it's both now and not yet so for example we you were saved we're being saved and you will be saved so you absolutely you're saved but also you know the holy spirit and you're cooperating the holy spirit working on our salvation with fear and trembling you know like and jesus is working in you and you don't stop believing great song and you're just you know what i mean just believe in god don't stop believing okay jesus i'm running towards you hold on to that feeling okay you know like and great theology and great theology and and and then you and then and and we know that i'm going to be saved so like um i've got a sin fighting nature now i don't have my old sin nature i've got the sin fighting nature i hate sinning now and but then when when jesus returns my body's gonna be glorified and i'm going to have zero sin nature and all things are going to be new you're following me so we are living in anticipation of jesus's return so it's already the kingdoms already but not yet and so we're living in this funny in-between place where there's still business to be done it's kind of exciting every parable is trying to make us aware of this already and not yet so bad situation good news and those two things right there there's bad situation and here's the good news impending doom way of escape those two things are meant to elicit a response every parable is preached to elicit a response and to be quite honest with you that's why i don't like reading the parables because i don't like to be forced to a decision you know what i mean i like when i'm reading the parable sometimes i feel like i'm being you know like it's like jesus is a greasy you know used car salesman you know what i mean and we don't we don't like being it's a horrible horrible analogy but do you know what i mean like you can just we don't like being brought to a precipice we like you're not gonna mold this over i gotta think about it i'm just gonna take my time and call my lawyer you know i'm gonna talk to my doctor i'm gonna google it uh then i'm gonna google it somewhere i'm gonna go on twitter and see what the hashtags are saying you know what i mean like really i get my counsel from the internet um that was supposed to be a joke i'm gonna see what people like my grandma's saying on facebook she tells the truth grandmas do tell the truth actually um but you know what i'm saying it's like we just we try to push those decisions off but jesus is trying to pull us into a decision i'm going to give you a couple examples in luke chapter 12 jesus tells this parable and he said to them take care and be on guard against all covetousness for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions and jesus told them a parable saying the land of a rich man produced plentifully and he thought to himself what shall i do for i have nowhere to store my crops and he said i will do this i will tear down my barns and build larger ones and there i will store all my grain and my goods and i will say to my soul soul you have ample goods laid up for many years relax eat drink and be married literally means to be intoxicated get a little buzz on you know life is good but god said to him fool like dude you missed it because this night your soul is required of you not that god's killing them but going you die tonight what i mean like and you didn't know that you're gonna die and the things you've prepared whose will they be so is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich towards god guy had this huge potential investment and it died with him are you seeing the impending doom there right like you don't know when you're gonna die when none of us know when that day comes the unexpectedness of death and the kingdom is now to live for possessions and be ignorant of the kingdom is foolish and god just looks like no don't don't do that here's another example luke chapter 16. jesus said to the disciples there was a rich man who had a manager and charges were brought to the rich man that this manager was wasting his possessions and so the rich man called the manager and said to him what is this that i hear about you turn in the account of your management for you can no longer be manager and the manager said to himself what shall i do since my master is taking the management away from me i am not strong enough to dig and i am ashamed to beg i have decided what to do so that when i am removed from management people may receive me into their houses so summoning his master's debtors one by one he said to the first how much do you owe my master he said 100 measures of oil and he said to him take your bill and sit down and quickly write 50. then he said to another how much do you owe and he said 100 measures of wheat and he said you know quit take take your bill and write 80. the master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness right imagine the original audience going what this is crazy jesus but jesus is pulling us in this in a different direction here and he says this for the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light and i tell you make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings what's the point the shrewd manager sees the end coming well actually he doesn't right his his stewardship comes up on it he doesn't he doesn't see it hey turn in your turn in your management right you see the impending doom like boom realizing that he's got you know i mean he does see a little bit right like turn in the thing so then he's got a little bit of time and he realizes the time is now to start making moves and he has like a day so this guy starts being shrewd and he's using his master's wealth to make friends on the other side right the point here is that our stewardship is coming to an end you don't you don't belong to you you never have you're just a steward of the life that god gave you your talents your abilities are not your own you're just a steward of them and god has given you everything that you have and you're just a steward of what he's given you and your stewardship is coming to an end and so jesus is saying hey use what god's given you to make friends on the other side invest the holy spirit is saying to us hey i know about some crypto i know a great place to invest right now you're hearing me stonks recognize the moment for what it is and do something about your situation is what jesus is trying to tell us today from these parables it's eliciting a response how will we respond to jesus today here's one last verse matthew 13 44 the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which a man found and covered up then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field wow right he he he finds the the crypto he knows that it's going to be great and so he gets he he changes his life to buy the field all right let's talk about why we wouldn't see the bitcoin opportunity and act upon it let's do that for a moment one second my sister's calling me and it might be hey i'm preaching right now oh sorry no no no wait wait is georgie there george you say hi i love you look i'm at church look i'm at church georgie say hi that's my georgie i love you that's so cool she's the best that's my that's my niece and my sister okay where were we it's dogs we'd miss the investment opportunity if number one we don't know about it right so so after this we know about this right i just showed you what jesus has said and we know about um now number two the devil deceives us right so so we can know about something but then the devil begins to sow or our enemy which by the way you have an enemy that wants to absolutely rob you steal from you and destroy you right the enemy does not want you to benefit from your relationship with god you're a real enemy who wants to just destroy you destroy your future and number number three i got i got four of these but number three we don't we know but we don't have enough theological root to grasp the severity of the situation an example would be some of us are hazy on the new heavens and the new earth the reason why we're hazy is because most of our theology on heaven is like come from disney which is it's this neoplatonic it's like greek ideas of heaven the greeks believed that material was was bad and and spirit was good and so they believed in a sort of like a material-less heaven right so some of us think that like heaven's gonna be we're a bunch of naked angel babies right and we're floating around and we have a harp some of some of us have bow and arrows we shoot each other in the rear end with them you know what i mean like and we sit on clouds and that's what eternity is like and that's not that's not what the christian that's not what the biblical vision of the new heavens and the new earth is the biblical vision of the new heavens and the new earth we see in the book of psalms we see in isaiah twice we see in in first peter and we've seen the book of revelation that it's a new heavens and a new earth a new earth with glorified bodies we're not becoming less human in the new heavens the new earth we're becoming more human in the new heavens and the new earth it's it's not less earth it's more earth it's just a better earth it's not less human it's more human but with better bodies right jesus is the first person to receive a glorified body and you're going to have seen the exact same thing that's pretty cool so it's not a disembodied experience it's a fully bodied experience we're back on earth jesus is our physical king no more elections thank god right how cool is it that jesus is going to be the king i mean talk about justice and equity and and fairness and and just it's his reign is going to be perfect and his justice is going to be perfect and it's going to be cause for praise and worship forever and ever because it's going to be so good and but it's a fully bodied experience and so there's going to be seasons and there's going to be times because these are things that god made in the garden and they're good right and we're going to continue to sow and we're going to continue to to work and play and recreate and enjoy one another and we'll recognize one another it's an earthy experience but we've had bad theology and because we don't think of heaven that way we don't invest into heaven that way jesus told us he literally he he told us so up for yourselves store up for yourselves treasures in heaven we hear that through their neoplatonic lens and we're like it's gonna be um hugs and it's not real treasure it's of course it's something else no it's real treasure god wants you to have economic advantage in the new heavens and the new earth we don't all enter it's not like communist china where everybody gets the same amount of money does that make sense you know like okay everybody okay we're all in we're all equal no that's not that's not the if that was the vision why would jesus say store up for yourself treasure in heaven jesus is literally trying to play to your greed in a good way you know those are i'm just more holy than jesus and so i don't really care about things like that don't be more holy than jesus if jesus says to store up treasures in heaven store up treasures in heaven dude you're hearing me look at the parable of the talents there's reward for people who put their talents to work and there's no reward for people who bury their life the way that you can love jesus is by putting your life to work for him and whatever he's called you to do hearing me he's called you to be a janitor be the best janitor ever you're hearing me the fourth concern and one of one of the reasons why we had missed this opportunity to invest in the kingdom of god which is going to pay the best returns ever is that the concerns and the cares and the deceitfulness of riches begin to just choke out faith in our life i don't know about you but this is the reason why i didn't invest in in in bitcoin because i just had too much going on i just got too much going on man man i had 26 dollars in 2009 i could have i could have afforded that i would i would have totally changed had i known i had this information you know what i mean i would have pulled the buckle you know i'd add some water to the soup and just deal because of the value of the investment you hear them of course we do that the current the concerns and cares that's that's what really gets at me the most you know i'm my wife and i are uh saving for a house right now um and um man you boomers you got all the houses i can't believe what my dad paid for his house it's ridiculous you know and then now like he's got all this equity and it's appreciated in a gazillion times you know here i'm 38 years old trying to buy a house so thanks a lot guys i'll get a house when my parents die and give it to me you know like unbelievable but you know i'm trying to do that whole dave ramsey thing you know what i mean and like if i pay cash for my cars i drive old cars you know we don't live beyond beyond our means uh i act my wage as uh as dave ramsey says you know and so our next thing our next thing in financial stewardship and you know and and and wisdom is saving up so we we're you know we're throwing cash as much as we can in our in our savings account um but i'll be honest with you i sometimes can get so worried and concerned about owning a house that i get i get anxiety about it i'm so behind the eight ball right now you know i'm 38 years old all my friends from high school they all got a job straight away you know and they all own houses now and i'm do in the ministry and i'm 38 i'm an idiot you know what i mean like those things can oh you know and it's you're always comparing yourself to the other person who's a little bit further down the road right which is ridiculous and i have to continually remind myself okay lord i can only do what you know hey if you wanted me to have a house and i'd have a house so i have exactly what you want me to have so thank you lord i'm going to be grateful for what i have also i'm going to walk in wisdom and and steward my finances the best i possibly can but number three god i don't want to be so concerned about things here when you want me to be concerned about things on the other side and lord would you please forgive me for that and lord i just i resist anxiety about that in fact i will not worry jesus you told me in matthew chapter 5 and 6 to not worry about my possessions because lord you're going to take care of me and so lord i thank you for that and father would you give me prophetic eyes to see where i should really be putting my investments you hear me but man can we ever you know the concerns and the cares of this life that's called worldliness in case you were wondering you're looking for a term for that have you ever been somewhere and you felt worldliness kind of sneaking in on you man i'll give you two examples i gave the earlier uh the earlier services these ones so i remember one time i was golfing at elgin golf and country club it's a private private club it's just outside of chicago elgin is a suburb of chicago and illinois and i was with this rich guy okay rich rich old dude of course because it's all old dudes and this is awesome and i want to be a ritual dude that's my i kind of want to be old now and um and and so um so i'm with this guy and we're 150 members you go into like the locker room it's like ron burgundy owns the place right like everything is everything is smells like rich mahogany you know like and they all have their names you know inscribed on their lockers it's all wood and i was just i was playing for one day and they had a little thing that that had my name on it it was the dopest thing ever and there's this guy he's like a career bartender in the men's locker room you know his name's ernie he's like 85 and he's just polishing the bar top going what'll it be you know i'm like i need this i love you ernie you know like it was the coolest thing and then we we tee off and there's like hardly anybody playing there's like three other people playing on 18 holes of golf and it's this beautiful day and every three holes there's like a bar and a restaurant that's free you know like and it's just like what is life right now and i'm just thinking to myself like how do i get here it's funny but like that's worldliness worldliness is when you're going i need to be here and everything that i need to do is to be here because this is i will have made it all of my investment in all of my life needs to be channeled towards the pursuit of this thing my uh my mother my parents came down for christmas to palm springs from communist canada and that's a good one it's funny because it's true and so my parents are down there and we're driving around and i my mom wanted to go see where all the old the hollywood stars lived right in palm springs so we get in my car and we're driving around hilarious and we go see elvis's house marilyn monroe frank sinatra dean martin you know the whole rat pack obviously uh debbie reynolds it was real fun and gorgeous neighborhoods right like gorgeous neighborhoods and same thing you know you begin to feel like you begin to feel that worldliness creep in and there's nothing wrong with an awesome house in an awesome location there's nothing wrong with that but you know once again i can feel that you know like that what do i need to do to get in here what do i need you know it's worldiness and i i think that god doesn't want us to have fomo the fear of missing out that's what i've kind of felt this year as i've watched the stock market go you know like my friends that have crypto you know all the way to the moon dogecoin to the moon and i've had this you know little you know you get that anxiety of fear of missing out i'm not here to discourage you today i'm actually here to encourage you because you're here you're here you know the kingdom you understand it but even sometimes when we're here we can lose the joy of sowing in ephesians chapter six it's like hey you know don't um in due season you will reap if you faint not so don't lose heart in doing good let me tell you you are in the right place and jesus is just encouraging us to see the kingdom with fresh eyes today you don't need to have foam i i was kind of having a bit of foam a couple months ago and you know with all the things that are happening and i just felt the holy spirit just say to me hey like dude you're you're sowing in the right place you've bought the crypto you've bought the kingdom you've sold everything and you bought the crypt just keep sewing and have joy in that so i'm here today to encourage you have joy have joy in your sewing know that you're you are like you can leave today knowing we bought the crypto we we did it thank you lord and ask the holy spirit to make you a little bit psycho in your sewing you know what i mean like a little bit dangerous in your sewing that you're you're at the point where you're you're willing to god what is it that what else can i sow because god i wanna i wanna use my life everything any resource that i have to sow into what truly matters lord would you rid me of the cares and the concerns and the anxieties and the deceitfulness of riches in this time god would you let them holy spirit let them be naked and let me just see them for what they really are let me see the the how temporal they are and how meaningless they are but how i have something that i can turn into something greater you are not sitting today disadvantaged you are sitting today advantaged you're part of the kingdom of god so we need to ask the holy spirit to illuminate and illumine the investment that you've made why don't we pray why don't you stand with me thank you lord father we thank you today for your kingdom we thank you that of your kingdom there will be no end father we thank you that you've brought us into the kingdom for such a time as this father we thank you for the reality of the kingdom of god god i ask you that you would forgive us for at times just treating your kingdom as something that is just not important just being a little bit cavalier about our life and our management and jesus i ask you that your word by your grace would elicit a response in us that today would be a line where we cross over where there's increased joy in our sowing and we have prophetic eyes to see what you want us to do we we sense some urgency today god i ask you don't don't let us be lulled to sleep holy spirit by your grace would you wake us up even if sometimes it's a bit of a rude awakening lord let us know what is the hope of our calling god i ask you that we would be people who have that joy that joy of knowing that we are doing exactly what the father wants us to do we thank you for that lord we thank you for what a privilege and an honor it is to serve the kingdom of god to serve the king of kings what a privilege and an honor it is to be in your stewardship lord what a privilege and honor it is to have the life that we have and the things that we have to serve and to sow into the kingdom to buy the field what an honor god let us be joyful today and filled with hope like we never had before knowing that we're doing exactly what you've called us to do in jesus name amen amen
