[Music] thank you [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] my name is Dave ort and as far as involvement with this Museum I knew John when he really wasn't into the antique motorcycles and I kind of was I went to the chopper meets when he had put them on and that's where I met him him in jail this is a 47 Chief Chopper that's Steve McQueen owned which makes it really cool because he was the king of cool in my book anyway ironically in I think it was 84 I had no money I never flown before but I went to his auction and I thought I'm buying me a Steve McQueen bike well that didn't happen because I only had three thousand dollars but this bike at that time I believe sold for 3 500. because in 84 they didn't care too much about ugly ratty Choppers which they do now and this bike is to me because of the Steve McQueen thing it's pretty important it's passed through a few hands I know John I believe bought it from Jesse James was the previous owner from him I don't know who else beyond that so the guy that built this bike had a similar bike and Steve McQueen used to ride with him he said I want to buy your bike and the guy said that's my baby you're not going to buy my baby I'm going to tell you that right now he says but I tell you what I'll build you one like mine so if you look it up you'll see there's a very similar bike then he built off of it for Steve McQueen and I believe the guy's still alive you can see this interview with him talking about how he did it for him and how they met and how they work together and I know Steve McQueen used to write Ally McGraw in the back like this bike was a bike he would get on just to get away and people wouldn't recognize him on this bike so he could go Incognito and he lived in Santa Paula California I think that's where it rested and when he felt like going for a bike ride he could take off and he liked to bar hop and whatnot go visit his friends and he did it on this bike [Music] foreign [Music] thank you [Music] so this is Ed Ross asphalt Angel and I believe he built it in 81 he drove it all the way to Milwaukee to a hot rod show from LA they turned him away because it wasn't a car and he drove all the way home but he loved these like custom trikes a similar one earlier was the California Cruiser has the same Cobra body on it but he developed that design and uh this showed up out east a man had it in a warehouse and uh I actually got it running and drove this thing it's a blast you'd think it'd be real funky and cumbersome but it's not at all you can see how the handlebars reach way back and you put your feet up here to cruise it's a Buick motor in it this thing kicks butt too and you just throttle it it goes sideways real easy but then a pre next owner put running boards on here because he didn't like to have his feet up here all the time so you could write it like this and get to the break if you had to easier so you can write it like this too but it's very comfortable if you like Ed Roth you'll like this [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign foreign [Music] I think it was about 2006 I was sitting with John having a steak he was buying me a steak and he got a phone call and I hear him say yeah you know I don't really I'm not interested and I go what was that about and it was Mill Blair co-founder of Easy Rider magazine and he said he had the original Dragon bike kind of messed up but he had the original painted tanks and the rest of the bike was in a basket case and I said John you're going to buy that he goes no I'm not going to buy that and so I called up Mill and we hashed it out and I bought it thought it was important to rescue this thing because if you think about it this movie was made in 1966 before Easy Rider and I mean Not only was Fonda and it Nancy Sinatra was his girlfriend Bruce Stern was in it there's some great Choppers in it from 66 that's that's the main thing I like about it so according to Mill Blair the mechanic that was in the movie built the bike for the movie and Mill got it from his daughter because the guy had passed away didn't touch it for 15 years or something like that I just kept it under wraps because I had other things I had to do I had a job you know but I thought boy I better put it back together for I die because then nobody was thinking what is this thing you know so what happened was I started piecing it together I did have to have another bar made and a seat but it's uh the original exhaust there's a lot of original parts on it the motor the frame this is XA Fork which you can barely see because they ground it off here and then they filled this in with weld but I just finally it's I finally got it together got it running it's great to ride it's so much fun I rode it to the museum just to show it off a little bit at an antique rally and I left it and I haven't ridden it since when Mill decided he'd sell it to me and we were hashing out a number I was going come on can you do this much that much and I I actually at first I thought I'm going to pass on this thing and I said no I guess I'm going to let it go I can't he goes I'm sorry to hear that and a day went by and I thought what are you doing buy this thing you know so I called him right back up and I said I'm going to take it I just worked it out you know sometimes if you want something you just figure it out and it happened I guess to me this was like a lightning strike the planets lined up I mean how often is this going to happen to that bike is offered to me where I can afford it never I mean so it's like I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to buy it [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] and I am the President of the board of directors here at the National Motorcycle Museum that the major goal at the Museum was to have something for everybody and every Walk of Life and not just to have Harley-Davidson and the fun part is is people come in here and they'll look at the bikes and they'll say oh I had that when I was 16 years old and so my husband was the Constructor of all this and he um he wanted something for everybody and so he some of this is his collection and some of it's on loan and so he just wanted something for everybody to look at while my husband and I were the original founders of JMP Cycles that started in 1979 we really grew in those years and eventually sold JMP Cycles and um that's what actually made him be possible to buy the collection that he has in this Museum he he didn't think that investing the money in in a bank was what you needed to do he invested in motorcycles he um he had a great passion for for that and he had an early passion of vintage motorcycles I mean way when we were first married he started buying vintage motorcycles and I couldn't understand at that point why he wanted to but there's some great history with that especially that 1955 Panhead that sits back there that's how the yellow Panhead was you know back when we were first married of course there was no money to buy these old vintage bikes and they weren't worth near the money they are now by any means but still it was a lot of money and John was had his heart set on buying this 55 Panhead so we went all the way to Indiana and it was twenty five hundred dollars which was a lifetime of money to us you know in in 1980 81 and um we we had to sleep in the van to get there because we didn't have enough money to stay in a hotel and we got to the guy's house and he said oh I I thought I told you 2 900. we only had 2500 and so he trusted us enough to owe him four hundred dollars way back then and we brought that bike home and we both rode on it it's a solo seat really but we both wrote on it for many many miles and then actually it was in a fire um that we had in in 1984 and it it burned and we reconstructed it and restored it which took a lot you know find some of the parts again we put it on display out at JMP Cycles and that was our early days of JMP and the money just wasn't there all the time for us and so we ended up having to sell it to meet payroll and the guy that bought it for us held it for us for two years and we bought it back and it never left this place since then so it went it went into the museum and it just be kind of became the JMP bike I guess we call it so that's kind of the history of it it's called The Best of the Best and so that area is kind of one of my favorites and the video plays in the background of when John got inducted into the um Hall of Fame at the AMA and some interviews with him and I and um so it's just it's kind of fun just to sit in there and listen to his voice and look at the bikes that he loved the most probably just the financial end of it because we it you know that's the only reason we're really closing it's just not making it here in animals Iowa a lot of them are little bikes that people will ride you know not just put on display and and sit here so um but but it's been a challenge finding people to work and um you know just maintaining the bikes here and um this is hard yeah you know that's fun kind of funny because you know we're only 25 miles from the Field of Dreams and my husband used to always say if you build it they will come and that's you know kind of the Field of Dreams motto and so we always felt that was a good model for us too if we build it they will come yeah so and they and they used to come a lot more because JP Cycles was a lot bigger here in town and we used to have a great big rally out there and um so that's kind of cut that's cut back since JMP has moved their warehouse and stuff and so not as many writers come to this area it's going to be open seven days a week now until it closes and we still have a huge number of motorcycles in here we have had some of the lone bikes go back but we still have a huge number of motorcycles in here and it actually thinning out some of the the bikes has made it easier to get through the museum we were a little overcrowded so all this stuff will still be in place you know till till September so it still is a great place to come visit and we still have lots of t-shirts and that kind of thing to buy so as a memory so I hope that we get a lot of people the auction is September 6th 7th 8th and 9th and it's with Mecum and you can go to mecan.com to look at some of the stuff they've a lot of photographs and we're tweaking those photographs and stuff now but some of the people that had their bikes on loan are actually going to sell their bikes at the auction and the other people are that have them alone certainly can do that by contacting Mecum and so I think it'll be a fabulous day you know of memories and so I can hardly wait to see who gets the bikes [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music]
