hello everyone and welcome back to my channel my name is madeline i create crafting content here on youtube in today's video i'm going to be showing you how to knit a hat and what's going to be special about this tutorial is that it's knit completely flat what i mean by that is that all you need are straight knitting needles you don't need any circular knitting needles you don't need any double pointed needles just straight knitting needles we knit it flat and then we seam it so there are actually two different ways you can knit this hat you can either knit it the way i have it shown here with a little cuff at the bottom or if you want to not have the cuff at the bottom you can just knit the hat a little bit shorter so what i'm going to show you in this video is we're going to start with a cast on down at the bottom then we're gonna work the hat in ribbing so the ribbing fabric allows this hat to be really stretchy so this hat may not look very large but it actually fits me pretty perfectly so it stretches quite a bit then once we work up through the ribbing portion we're going to begin decreases and i'll show you each one of the decreases you need along the way lastly once we finish the decreases up here at the top we're just going to cast off and then i'll show you how to seam up the side this seems nice too and that i show you how to switch the seam from one side of the hat to the other to prevent anyone from ever knowing it was seamed when you fold it up so you can probably barely tell there but the seam is actually running right down that side so in the pattern down below there are multiple sizes available so there's this larger size right here which is the one i was just trying on and then there's a smaller kids option down below as well now if you want to scale the pattern in between one of these sizes you just want to do that in multiples of 10. so you want to add or subtract 10 stitches from the number of stitches i tell you to cast on in the pre-designed ones down below so in the description box below you're going to find a few things so first you're going to find the full written version of the pattern that's going to be linked to on my website you're also going to find the materials i used to create my hats right here and you're gonna find the different video breakpoints so that way you can fast forward or rewind to any particular part of this video that you're searching for if you have any comments or questions please leave those in the comments down below and if you're new to my channel don't forget that red subscribe button so that way you stay up to date on all my new videos let's get started the materials you need for this project include a set of us5 straight knitting needles and you do want to make sure they're at least 10 inches long even longer would be better you're going to need seven stitch markers one of which is removable a tapestry needle a pair of scissors and then the yarn weight we're going to be using today is dk weight which is number three if you're knitting the kid's medium size you need about 125 yards if you're knitting the adult medium you need about 200 yards to cast on all i have in front of me are my two knitting needles and then my yarn so to start off i'm going to pull off about two yards of this yarn and that's what i'm going to be using to cast on i always like to have a little extra just so i don't have to start over so now we have two portions of yarn here we have the full ball of yarn which is what's called our working yarn and then we have the tail out front here which is just everything that i just wound off so the first thing we want to do is we want to create a slip knot so first i'm going to have it my yarn laid out so my working yarn further away my tail closer to me and then i'm going to put my hand behind that strand of yarn in between the two now i want to grab the strand with my bottom three fingers and now i'm going to take this working yarn i'm going to go up above my finger then down below up the front to the top back behind to the bottom back up to the top again and then back down to the bottom and now i want to grab onto this strand with my other three fingers so now it's basically like i kind of have two and a half loops around my pointer finger now what i want to do is i'm going to rearrange these loops to create the slip knot so i'm going to take this second loop move it up over the first loop take the new second loop move it up over the first loop and now i want to take the new second loop and slide it up off my finger now i've created a slip knot so the way i want to place the slip knot onto my knitting needle is i'm going to take my knitting needle with the point going over towards the left and i'm going to slide it right on to the slipknot and i want my tail coming out the front of the slipknot so the tail is coming out closest to me the working yarn is coming out the back and then you just want to pull on your tail gently until it tightens onto your knitting needle you don't have to make it too tight a little loose is perfect so this slip knot right here counts as our first stitch and now we need to cast on more stitches so the way we're going to do that is we're going to hold our knitting needle in our right hand and i basically like to grab onto it and then put my pointer finger right on top of that slip knot so it doesn't slide off or go anywhere now i'm going to take my left hand and i'm going to put it behind both of the strands of yarn now again i'm going to grab it with my bottom three fingers and now i want to push away on the working yarn with my pointer finger and i'm going to push towards myself on my tail with my thumb so again i'm pushing away on my working yarn with my pointer finger towards myself using my thumb on the tail yarn now what i want to do is i want to angle my hand upwards so my palm is facing the ceiling and this movement that we're about to do is called a long tail cast on so for the long tail cast on i'm first going to move my knitting needle towards myself up on top of all the strands then i'm going to begin going down and then i'm going to come up the center of my thumb so i'm going to come up right in between that loop now i'm going to go up over the top back to my pointer finger now i'm going to go down the center of my pointer finger so basically i've grabbed onto that one strand around my pointer finger and i want to pull that strand back down through that thumb loop now i'm going to release with my thumb and i'm going to push back on the tail again with my thumb so now you can see i have two stitches on the knitting needle so to show that again i'm going to grab onto both my strands i'm going to push away for myself with my index finger on my working yarn towards myself on my tail with my thumb angle my palm up towards the ceiling i'm going to come towards myself up over all the strands of yarn then go down up the center of my thumb back up over the top until i get to my pointer finger i'm going to go down my pointer finger pick up that loop closest to me around my pointer finger and now i want to pull that down the center of my thumb again and now i'm going to release with my thumb and then push back on that tail with my thumb to basically create it so i can make the next stitch now so now i have three stitches on my knitting needle so just to show that movement a couple more times i'm going to go towards myself then down below up the center of my thumb up over the top to my pointer finger down my pointer finger then i'm gonna bring it back down the center of my thumb release with my thumb [Music] and now as you continue going you'll get faster and faster and you're just going to want to continue casting on until you have the number of stitches for your size so now i finished casting on all the stitches and depending on how many you have to cast on you might have to really squish them over to the side to be able to fit them all on the needle but once i finish i double check to make sure i have the right number of stitches because you don't want to begin working and find out mid-way through so now what i'm going to do is i'm going to take my tail and i'm just going to cut it so i have about 10 inches left over and now we're going to begin the actual knitting and purling so to begin that i'm going to turn my work the other way so now i have my knitting needle point over towards the right so the nice thing about this pattern is that it's one row repeated over and over again so that really helps to simplify it and what that row is is first we're gonna knit the first stitch then we're gonna begin repeating knit one purl one and we're gonna repeat that all the way across until one stitch remains and then we're gonna purl the final stitch so again we're going to knit the first stitch then we're going to begin repeating the two stitch repeat of knit one purl one so we're knit one purl one knit one purl one knit one purl one all the way across these center stitches until one stitch remains purl the final stitch so to start off with the knit stitch how the knit stitch works is we're going to go in between the first stitch and the second stitch and we're going to go into the base of that first stitch and we're going to go basically from left to right through the bottom of that stitch now i'm going to wrap my yarn and you want to make sure you have your working yarn not your tail around my knitting needle and now i'm going to pull that yarn i wrapped around through the stitch so that's a knit stitch now again the next stitch is also a knit stitch so now i'm going to go in between that new first stitch and the second stitch go into the bottom of that stitch from left to right now i'm going to wrap my yarn around that stitch and pull through now the next stitch is a purl stitch so i'm going to bring my yarn to the front so to bring my yarn to the front i basically just take it in between the two knitting needles and now for this stitch i'm going to go from right to left into the next stitch on my left knitting needle through the front of the stitch so i'm going from right to left through the front of that next stitch wrap my yarn around so to wrap your yarn around for a purl stitch you're going to go up above then down below and now i want to push back and pull that yarn through so now we're again we're working on the repeat here so we knit the first stitch and then we just did the first repeat so we didn't knit one purl one so now i need to knit one again so i'm going to bring my yarn to the back so i'm going to go in between the two knitting needles underneath the knitting needles to the back so again to bring your arm to the back you want to go in between the two make sure you aren't going above any of the knitting needles though and now i'm going to go in between the new first stitch and the new second stitch going from left to right into the base of it i'm going to wrap my yarn around and now pull through the bottom of that stitch now we're going to purl again so we're going to bring our yarn to the front next up is a knit bring the yarn to the back and i'm going to continue repeating in between this knit one purl one all the way across until one stitch remains now that i'm on that final stitch i'm just going to purl it i'm just going to straighten out my stitches real quick and now to begin the next row again i'm just going to turn that knitting needle point so the point is over towards the right i'm going to pick up my other knitting needle and begin working across this row so this one again is going to be the same exact repeat so it's knit the first stitch then work the repeat of knit one purl one knit one purl one knit one purl one all the way across purl the final stitch and we're going to continue repeating that row over and over again until your hat reaches the length that's specified for your size in the pattern down below so for the size i'm knitting i need to reach six and a half inches so when i measure that i'm going to go from this bottom edge down here to the bottom of the knitting needle so once i've reached that point i'll come back and show you the decreases if you're ever curious if you're working the right stitch in the right place what you can do is you can read your knitting so what i mean by that is you can look just below the stitch you're about to work and see what kind of stitch it is so this next stitch on the knitting needle it has this bump out in the front and you can see this bump out in the front is different than what the next stitch over has so this next stitch over has a much more flat surface so whenever you see the bump in the front here that means you want to purl it so i'm going to bring my yarn to the front and i would purl that stitch now the next one again that one's flat so that would mean i would want to knit that stitch and you can see now that i've worked those two stitches the first one that had the bump below it now has another bump and the one i just knit that had the knit stitches below it now has that flat surface as well so i put the right thing in the right place so now i've continued to work for the length specified in the pattern and i'm ready to begin my decrease rows so for this step i have a bunch of stitch markers here and if you don't have stitch markers available what you can do instead is you can take little pieces of yarn and just tie them into little loops be a similar shape to this and that will work perfectly as well so to do these decreases the first thing we're going to do is we're going to do a set up row with some initial decreases and during the setup row we're going to place each one of these stitch markers then once we're done the setup row we're going to begin a two row repeat which we're going to do over and over again until eventually we've reached the correct number of stitches and we're ready to cast off so how this setup row is going to work is first i'm going to knit one stitch then i'm going to place one of the stitch markers now again i want to repeat that knit one purl one all the way across for a certain number of stitches the number of stitches is going to depend on your pattern size for the one i'm knitting i want to repeat knit one purl one for a total of 16 stitches so now that i've placed those stitches the next thing i want to work is a slip slip knit so to work this i'm going to bring my yarn to the back because i just finished with the purl stitch and now what i'm going to do is i'm going to slip one stitch from the left to right knitting needle as if to knit now i'm going to slip the next stitch from the left to right knitting needle as if to knit and i'm not working either of these stitches i'm just slipping them over now i want to pass both of those stitches back over to the left knitting needle again and now i'm going to take my right knitting needle point through the back of both of those stitches at one time wrap my yarn around and pull through so that is called a slip slip knit now i'm going to place my next stitch marker and i'm going to do that same repeat over again so i'm going to repeat knit one purl one over and over again for a total of 16 stitches or whatever the number of stitches is for your pattern size then i'm going to work a slip slip knit and then i'm going to place my stitch marker so now i just finished that final repeat placed my last stitch marker and now i'm going to purl that final stitch now when i turn my work i'm all set up to begin the decreased repeats so now for the first repeat row of the decreases what i want to do is first i'm going to knit my first stitch then i'm going to slip my stitch marker so i'm just going to pass the stitch marker from the left of the right knitting needle then i'm gonna work a purl two together then i'm gonna repeat purl one knit one purl one knit one purl one knit one all the way across until one stitch remains and i'm gonna purl that stitch before the stitch marker pass the stitch marker and repeat that little repeat over again so i would purl two together again repeat purl one knit one over and over again until one stitch remains purl the final stitch so let me show that you that repeat one time so again first i'm going to knit the first stitch now i'm just going to slip my stitch marker from the left of the right knitting needle next i have a purl two together so i'm going to bring my yarn to the front i'm going to take my right knitting needle point into the first two stitches on my left knitting needle as if to purl i'm just going to wrap my yarn around and then pull it through both of those stitches so i've just gone from two stitches down to one now i'm going to repeat purl one knit one over and over again until one stitch remains before the stitch marker now i'm going to purl that final stitch before the stitch marker pass the stitch marker for my left or right knitting needle and repeat it again so i'm going to work a purl two together repeat purl one knit one over and over again until one stitch before purl the final stitch pass it then i'm going to continue repeating that in between each set of the stitch markers and then finally at the end here i'm just going to purl that final stitch so now for the next decrease row what you want to do is you want to work the first stitch is a knit one then we're going to pass our stitch marker then i'm going to repeat knit one purl one over and over again until there's two stitches remaining before the next stitch marker i'm gonna knit those two stitches together then i'm gonna pass my stitch marker and repeat it again so i would work knit one purl one over and over again until two stitches remain working knit two together and i'm gonna repeat that in between each one of the sets until i get to that final stitch then i'm just gonna purl that final stitch so to show this one time again i'm gonna knit the first stitch slip my stitch marker i'm gonna work knit one purl one until two stitches remain before the next stitch marker and now to work a knit two together what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna take my right knitting needle point and i'm gonna go into two stitches at one time as if i'm gonna knit them so typically you just go into one stitch right going from the left to the right this time i'm going to go through the first two stitches going from the left to the right out the back wrap my yarn around pull through so we just decreased again so we turn those two stitches into one so to show the knit two together one time one more time i'm just going to take my right knitting needle point go into the front of both of those stitches at one time going from left to right now i'm going to wrap my yarn around and i'm going counter clockwise around that knitting needle and pull it through so now again i'm going to pass my slip mark stitch marker and do knit one purl one over and over again two stitches remain work another knit two together repeat inside each set and then the last stitch will be a purl one and i'm going to continue repeating those two decrease rows over and over again until there's one stitch remaining in between each one of these sets of stitch markers so now across the top here i finished all my decreases so you can see there's just one stitch in between each one of these stitch markers and the next thing i did is i cut my yarn so i left about a yard here at the end to seam with and then i just cut the tail so for this next step we're just going to need our other knitting needle and a tapestry needle so the first thing i'm going to do is i'm going to pass all of my stitches for my left to my right knitting needle no need to work them or anything we're just going to pass the stitch take off the stitch marker keep on going all the way across okay so we don't need the stitch markers anymore now and i'm going to take my tail here and i'm going to thread it through my tapestry needle now when i thread it through i want to start at the opposite side to where my working yarn is coming out of so i'm going to start over here at the left hand side and just slip each one of these stitches off my knitting needle and onto the tapestry needle so now i'm going to want to pull these tight so now i've just finished and pulled that tight so now what i want to do is i want to make sure when i fold my hat in half like this and fold in half either way that i have these crisp swirls on the outside so you can see one side of my work has these really crisp lines and that's where we worked the knitting decreases or the knit two togethers whereas the other side of my work has the purl decreases so we want the purl decreases to be on the inside the knit decreases to be on the outside so the next thing i'm going to do is i'm going to begin seaming so when i begin seaming i like to basically have my hat upside down almost so the top of the hat is closest to me so what i'm looking for when i'm seaming is on each side i want to find the first column of stitches so on this side it curls a little bit over to the side but these loops going down the side are these sets of these these whole things are one column of stitches then next to that if i stretch out my work i can see these bars so those bars are actually going to be when i pick up when i'm seaming and then next to the bars we have our next column of stitches so what i want to pick up on this side is going to be the bars in between that first column of stitches and the second column of stitches now on the other side it's going to be exactly the same so over here i have these first set of stitches that come down the side then if i stretch out my work i can see those bars that are in between the first and the second column of stitches so as i go down i'm going to pick up these bars on this side so to start i'm just going to pick up my first bar over here on the left hand side then i'm going to find the first bar on the right hand side and i just go underneath each one of the bars now i'm going to find the next bar on the left hand side next bar on the right hand side and what i like to do is i like to sew for about an inch or so not pulling the stitches too tight and then i'll just tighten my stitches by just tugging on this tail and it'll close up that full inch so let me seam a little bit and then i'll show you that okay so now i've seen for a little bit and now i'm gonna just gonna tug on that tail so now it really closes up that gap and now if i look in that gap it really just looks like another purl stitch it looks like that row belongs so now again i'd keep on going for about another inch and then i tug on this tail again and now what i'm going to continue doing is i'm going to continue sewing down this edge now if you're doing the hat without the folded brim you're just going to continue going all the way down both sides until you've reached the bottom edge if you're doing the version with the folded brim i'll show you that step and you're going to want to leave about an inch and a half to two inches depending on your the size of your hat down here at the bottom and then i'll show you how to switch the seam to the other side i just wanted to mention another little trick as you're going along so once you get past the decreases into where you have the pearl and knit here at the end it can become a little trickier to figure out which part of the purl stitch to pick up as you're seaming so the part of the purl stitch that i'm going to pick up is you can see there's this one bump that's kind of going up towards the top of the hat and then on either sides there's little loops that go down towards the bottom so i pick up the loop that's furthest over towards the seam that's angled down towards the bottom and that's what i pick up instead of the bar that occurs in between two knit stitches so now i'm up to the point where i want to switch the seam from being on the inside of the fabric to being on the outside of the fabric so how i'm going to do that is i'm just going to take my tapestry needle go over to the next side i would have gone in right where i would have picked up the bar and just thread it through to the other side now i'm gonna reverse my hat so you can see this is the seam we just created and now flip the hat so the openings down here at the bottom and i'm just gonna continue working the seam just now on this side of my work so again just look for the bar and pick up the bar on each side now that i've reached the bottom there i'm just going to weave in these two ends that i have remaining and the easiest way to weave in these ends is going to be to weave them through this bulkier seam that we just created so i would just take my tapestry needle and just begin going back and forth through the bulkier part of the seam so now the reason we had to switch which side the seam was on is because if you do the folded brim version and you would just put the seam all the way down on the inside when you folded it up you would have a big bulky seam on the inside of your hat but since we reverse where the seam is when you fold that brim up at the bottom it looks seamless all the way down this side so this is actually where my seam is and you can barely tell at all that that is where it is so that's why we have to reverse that little seam there at the bottom i hope you enjoyed the video today if you have any comments or questions please feel free to leave those down below down in the description box you're going to find a few things first you're going to find the video break points so that way if you want to rewind any particular points in this video you can find all those times down below you're also going to find the full written version of the pattern and that way you can knit either of the sizes that i've shown in the beginning of the video or if you want to scale it to be a different size just do that in multiples or 10 stitches so add or subtract 10 stitches to make the sizes larger or smaller also if you're new to my channel don't forget to hit that red subscribe button that way you can stay up to date on all my future videos i'll see you next time you
