apologies hi everyone neil here faces interiors hope you're all doing well keeping safe social distancing and all that stuff strange times i know lucky to be working to be honest a lot of people can't work at the moment but also on the flip side of it i'm not really getting paid at the moment because i don't qualify it for the government's furlough scheme and i don't qualify for the self-employed scheme because the business is so new so i am very unlucky you know it's a tough time start times for everyone you know i just i don't know if my business is going to make it what i'm doing this morning is i'm going to teach you how to measure a cushion and how to cut a cushion how to sew a cushion as you can see this beautiful chair that i've really upholstered and this lovely linwood fabric beautiful fabric really nice what i'm going to do is i'm going to measure up the cushion because the customer gave me the old interiors which didn't give me the cover so i've got make up fresh covers the back cushion i can copy because obviously gave me the cover for that one because it's got shape to it but this one's just a square seat cushion so i'll show you how i'll go about the process of cutting sewing and measuring sorry about the sun there's not a lot can do about that this morning but yeah it's very bright today so what i'm going to do is i'm going to measure i want to touch you can see there i want to touch the back so that's where my cushion is going to hit come to here i've got i've got about 25 inches there so i'm just going to draw a square remember so that's 25 inches add an inch for sewing it's half inch front half inch back so that's 26 inches and then side to side i've got at the back always measure front and the back because obviously with chairs they can splay out the arms can be wider at the front so nine times at ten they will so i'm gonna go 20 and three quarter inches only one and three quarter inches at the back and then and it comes out by about an inch it comes out to at the front here it's about 21 and three fourths it's gonna be 22. rule number one double check your measurements always measure twice cut once someone taught me that and it stayed with me forever because you measure once and you're in a rush and you will get it wrong from time to time you will get to add your sewing or you're not on the ball that day so always always always measure twice and cut once double check your measurements so i'm going to check them again that's 25 i'm going to cut 26 20 and three quarters at the back yeah and then 20 we have 21 and three quarters at the front yep going on let's get that cut all right guys so what i'm going to do now is i'm cutting the cushions cushion two faces cut the borders and cut the zips and cut the pipe in as well so i'll show you how i'll do that first i'm going to cut the faces [Laughter] so all right so i've just cut my first face so i'm going to do is i'm going to work out how long i want my zip orders to be so i want my zips to come round to about there two and a half inches each side in the border what i'll do here is go to the front fold it in half halfway from there to there that is 11 inches and from there to there 24 and a half 35 and a half sister 30 37 a full width of this fabric is 57 and a half that's 28 and three quarters so 28 three cars right there there's going to be little pieces so for the borders we're going to cut a full width and it will fall about here and we're going to have another piece in there take it to there where the zip board is going to start so full width plus about eight inch so i'm going to put a width plus eight inch pieces borders three and a half inch finish so i'm going to cut that four and a half it's a little inch with sewing zips half the finish size of the border so the finished size of all is three and a half so it's one of three quarters and add an inch and a quarter so it's two three quarters three inches for the zip so what i'm doing here is i'm using the template that i've already cut laying it down on top of the fabric and cutting around it for the second then i'm marking which end the zip is so now i'm measuring and cutting my borders i have mark ii as you can see there is two chairs in the tutorial there's only one so just bear that in mind you only need to cut one full width per cushion that's what i'm doing here is i've just cut the back borders and you might see me do this but i fold them in half and i'm nipping halfway top halfway bottom the reason i do this is because it makes it easier for me when i'm sewing it all together i can make sure that they line up in about the same position on the face and then i can make sure that i'm not too far out right you see this is a leftover bit of fabric that was from up the side of the roll i can use this for my zip orders because zip borders you don't see they're not on the front of the cushion they're at the back and you never see them so it doesn't matter if the fabric's running the wrong way you're not going to see them so i'm going to use that again i'll just explain that you only need two pieces per cushion so i'm cutting a few extras here because i think i'm cutting the back cushions as well i'm going to cut the little side pieces out of this to join onto the sides again you only need two pieces per cushion i think i'll cut four here because obviously there's two cushion okay so i'm going to show you now is how to cut piping you can cut piping in multiple different ways so you can cut the piping straight up the roll like that which is fine but it's not ideal you can also cut it across like this straight across the fabric like that but again it's not ideal best way to do it like that that is on the cross or on an angle as i like to say on the bias i love people say on the bias to be honest it's not just so i'm going to chunk that out now start cutting it i'll mark it also i know which way it's running um this is how we mark it and this is how we cut it what i've got here is straight well it's like a ruler someone made for me very kindly it's four and a half centimeters wide so when it's cut fold over it should be perfect half a centimeter so you've got your piping then plus half a centimeter for sewing which is what you want if it's too big you can run it under the overlocker which i do quite a lot just so you get a perfect half inch so free per cushion it's gonna be enough that's how we do it and then if i'm going to mark it i will go like that turn it over mark like that so the machinist or whoever's signing up knows where to join it alternatively you can do this with a blade um i'll put a link up here to see our video on scissors and blades and the best way of cutting with this fabric i'm going to stick to the scissors but the blade would probably be quicker let's say you cut piping now onto sewing piping and sewing piping onto a cushion right here's our piping that's all been cut so first of all we're going to join these i should have marked these so yeah that's there and i'm going to join this piping up i'm going to lay one on top of the other there i'm going to sew across that so that is going to follow like so then trim that off and then i will cut half things away from there that is first join i'll do that one more time show you you're laying one on top of the other like that and then you're coming across at an angle [Music] and that is a nice joint and if you're wondering what i'm doing here with this this is my back stitch always start cut the stitches back stitch and then come to the end and back stitch the reason why you do this is because if you don't backstitch your threads can come apart quite easily if you pull it and it'll just pop open so that's why we backstitch this is my piping cord five mil and run that under there and this foot i've got on here is a piping foot so it's got a curve in it so it sits nicely so what i'm going to do is i'm going to start off backward back back stitch sorry then getting a nice close stitch nice tight piping now i can just run that through quite fast now this is our new overlocker it's very nice i like it right so this machine is our over locker you're done to see me i'd like to see you so this basically um in most clothes thread is overlocked but it doesn't fray and just fall apart this fabrics are linen as well so it's gonna gonna fray then he's overlooking and it gives me a perfect half inch work makes it exactly the size i need it to sew onto the cushion so lift the foot run that through and away [Music] and we've bloody cottons are falling off though with a vibration you can see what that is doing that is called overlocking so that stops the fabric from fraying gives you a nice edge and it cuts the fabric down as well to the exact size that you need it which is half inch and that's the piping done this is our cushion that's the top so i'm going to start here [Music] this is how you attach a piping so you're laying it on you see where i've overlocked it you've got a perfect half inch you lay it on now it's a piping foot and you can see that there is a ridge under here there's a ridge under there that the piping foot sits on which follows your guide and this is how you attach it then when you get to the corner finish with the needle down always i have to do a snip i'm probably going to go one more stitch then turn the fabric [Music] and then lift the foot turn the pipe in you see how the piping's moved now because i put that nip in there and that is how you attach piping i'll show you how to do the join when i get round to that point i've got to this point here where i'm going to join these two together so i'm going to carry on that bit a little bit longer i'm going to backstitch and cut that off wanna cut that off with plenty spare so what i'm going to do is cut away some of the overlock so i can open that up and get inside like so same on the other side all right so pulled the two fabrics back so the pipings are laying across each other i'm gonna cut them slightly diagonally i need new scissors i'm gonna fold that under there cut a bit of that off that is going to fold under itself half inch sorry if i'm not getting a very good angle so i lay one on top of the other one's folded back on itself and then i'm going to roll them all over together and that is your joint come over that nice and tight so it doesn't come undone it doesn't come loose over time and that is how you join piping so that's one face done let's do the other one what i'm doing now is i'm running the piping on to the cushion i'm gonna go all the way around so i can show you how it's done totally snip here when i get to the corner when i get there make sure needle's down lift the foot see that lift the foot turn the fabric and then turn the pipe in so you can turn and start stitching again down this side this has the cushions made up faces so now i'm going to start making the sides of the cushion up so i'm start making up zip borders this is how i do zips so you've got two pieces at the same size this is my zip let's start off on this side i'm going to take about three quarters of an inch underneath drop the needle so i hold this straight here and then i try and hold the fabric and then push down on the fabric and straighten it then start running along make sure that you keep the fabric straight you can see the fabric is about the same size what i'll do after is i'll check this the right side so i'll put it on here on my little measuring chart make sure it's the right size if it is too big then i'll run it through the overlocker anyway just to sort of trim it down to size and then it's overlooked as well which is great for a zip so basically doing exactly what i've done on the other side flattening that fabric [Music] making sure it's straight i can see there that is straight so make sure you take the same amount [Music] underneath [Music] right this is it ball to run up there's my zipper heads standard zippers and that's zipper all right so i'm just going to check the size it needs to be four and a half just over so i'm just going to run that through the overlocker just to trim it down give it a nice finish as well all right so now everything's run up i'm going to start putting this cushion together what i've got here is my border which is marked top there then i've got the two side pieces i'm going to join them straight on this is because obviously the fabric's not wide enough to go all the way down to the zip so these are just extra pieces to [Music] get you there get rid of that goodbye other side half inch all right so that's right up now so i'm going to add that onto the face that is the center the center i've got the center on the cushion there so i want to line them to up then i'll start around the corner slightly when i finish i'm not finishing just around the corner i can feel the piping i can see it and i'm just following it with my foot my piping foot not my actual foot put a couple more stitches on finish with the needle down and then i want to make sure that this lines up which it does that knit lines up with there so beautiful so now i know that's that knit marks up with that knit and then that side that knit there is line up the same on the top and i know that it's all going to come together nicely when you get to a seam flatten it down straight over all right i'm coming to the end here now so i want to stop about there to prepare so what i'll do is i'll take that off and i'm going to start the zip from about two inches so what i'll do is i'll use my little marker here mark two inches cut that off straight then i'm gonna get my zip cut that nice and straight as well and that is going to join on so now we sew this up so is the zip attached to the border so we're going to carry on stitching now we will go from there see it sort of rolling over the edge of the piping cord if you are trying this for the first time at home it doesn't go badly wrong don't be disheartened because we all started somewhere i started at that point i'm still not even the most confident sewer with some fabrics practice makes perfect i taught myself pretty much how to stitch how to sew and how to upholster i mean i have got a lot of experience upholstery in the game but actually with the actual hands-on side of it pretty much told myself that and watching youtube videos so so i'll stop there now i need to join this so there so i'm gonna carry on stitching this down so here i'm gonna go again two and a half inches that is where i'm gonna cut my zip off what i'm doing is i'm pinching that on don't know where it's gonna finish i know i wanna sew down straight now i can just sew straight up [Applause] right one side done that's a zip and all the borders joined on now i'll just go get the top on so when you're putting the top on make sure your corners line up what i'll do is i've got my knit there middle to middle knit to knit so here i come to my middle knit to knit make sure that they line up so when i get to this point this is the last straight so what i will do hold that there and that is going to fall nicely i can see that there's not too much fabric i'm pulling that tight and i can see that there's no excess fabric i can just run that out nice and straight here we go join up with the other stitch back stitch a couple and that always check afterwards always check your cushion open up your zip check that your corners line up nicely one does perfect it's a finished box cushion and i'll show you it once it's [Music] filled [Music] [Music] you
