hi youtube neil here with faces interiors welcome back to our channel now this week's video is a requested video from a few people out there asking about different foams densities usages so we're going to be going through that this week we'll be showing you all the different foams that i use where i use them what i use them for the dacrons you know the fortune bank hopefully you find this video helpful if you are a beginner or newbie to all of this or even if you're advanced hopefully you can take away something from everything and i still watch videos now and i'm like that's a bloody good idea i understand as in every industry there's always multiple ways of doing things this is just the way i was taught and hopefully you find it helpful so as always if you like upholstery tips and tricks please don't forget to subscribe to our channel hit that notification bell so you'll see every time a new video becomes available so let's get into this video this is an introduction into all things foam for upholstery that's it so in today's video we're going to show you different foams and grades and what we use them for so this side we've got firms decide we've got sauce there is plenty more i'm not sure how they do it across the pond in america or around the world but in the uk 33 green it's like a medium seating grade foam that's supposed to be a medium seating grade i don't really use green blue but this is 33 well i tend to use 39 so this is 39 h the numbers mean the density so 33 is a bit softer 39's a bit harder so it's 39 h is this one so this is two inch two inch i would use on the top of ottomans like seating areas say i'm doing like a bench seat or like a corner seating area i use two inch blue then i go over the top with half inch to get a nice rounded edge so that's the two in there's also obviously it comes in half inch one inch two inch three inch you can also use this for cushions but it's rock hard so if you've got a customer i always have to say this if a customer says they want firm cushions i said well this is going to cut really firm so 39h i get half inch sheets of this which look like this this is half inch 39h i use this on pretty much everything seat cushions inside backs half inch is a nice finish on everything bear that in mind next we've gone chip foam that's five pound chip foam it goes all the way up to ten so it's old foam that's been all mushed up and put together this is quite good for like seats say you've got like a like a seating you need to put a dome on it i normally chop a bit of this off put it underneath give you like a one inch little square under in a dining seat bit of felt around it then nice bit of foam over the top gives you a nice dome or they use these on chester fields a lot as well chip foam they're so hard gives you a real solid back to use for your buttoning because when you're doing buttoning if the back's too soft you're not going to get good finish so chip foam good for seats and chesterfields button in i know someone else you used to use one inch chip foam then one inch foam over the top for a nice deep button headboard now as we go on to our whites so you've got 36 soft 24 really super soft 36 soft i would use on inside backs if you're doing an inside back on a sofa put your webs hessian then i would use 36 soft one inch over the top then dacron then fabric right so earlier on i said i would use half inch on all inside backs that is a finished inside back say it's an upholstered back with no cushions i would use like two inch white and then half inch blue over the top to give it a nice finish this one i would use one inch and i use it over an inside back that's having cushions this just gives you a nice soft inside back this is super soft so this you could also use for headboards i'd use this for like buttoning maybe on an inside back it's really soft really nice actually very nice so that's super soft going back to this 36 soft white some people would use this for outdoor seating it's a bit firmer than the next ones i'm going to go through but as a cushion it's a five inch cushion or four inches and you could use this for outdoor seating right so onto these so this is rg50 and rg50 soft and medium so these two guys are my go-to foams for seat cushions so you got 50 gold soft 50 pink medium both great foam spring back high density brilliant for sprung seats web seats and the way these come i'll show you now i ordered them to size with dacron top and bottom and i'm going to go 14 ounce dacron top and bottom then stockinette i'll show you how that kind of looks it hasn't got stuck in it on it so this is how it comes with background 14 ounce either side and then you put stocking over the top and that goes straight in to a cushion we also use the pink the gold as well which is a soft very nice very luxurious cushions so the next thing i'm going to talk about is quarter inch this is it's like a light blue it doesn't really matter at this that this thickness really what the density is but i use this for front borders sometimes sometimes i use half inch and sometimes use quarter inch depends on the finish how i want it to look we also use this on arm on faces on scroll arm faces this is perfect because sometimes half inch is much too much and dacron isn't enough so this quarter inch it's perfect so this is dacron and this is a 56 inch roll they come in shorter rolls but they tend not to be long enough to fit on inside backs and stuff so i'd like to get this long one which is 56 inches it's the same height as me nearly so this is what it looks like off the roll so this is yeah dacron or a wading i believe this is that looks like nine ounce well there's about a figure so this goes all the way from two ounce up to fourteen i think so i tend to put this on everything dacron but the thickness depends on what you're doing if you're doing a headboard i would probably put a very thin dacron on if you're doing cushions i'd put a very thick background to give it a nice plump feel or you're re-padding something if you're if you're doing re-upholstery if you're re-upholstering a bit of furniture and the foam's okay and you just need to give it a re-pad i would probably go for nine ounce to make it look like it's had a good bit of padding in it which it has so dacron is used in decent bits of furniture i use it on top of most things if you've got foam and then leather on top of foam it's really difficult to manipulate the leather it stucks foam's quite if you stick these two together they're really quite grippy they're like velcro so once you've got that crown on it gives you a lot more it gives you a real luxury feel because you've got padding on top of padding it's really nice and it also allows you to manipulate the fabric easier and it's just generally awesome this ladies and gentlemen is interliner so we use this so it's basically a fire retardant barrier for fabrics that haven't been fr treated so if there's a fabric like this one that hasn't got an fr backing so this fabric hasn't got an fr backing what we've had to do on this fabric is put an fr interliner underneath it to give it that fire retardant back in which is this stuff so the f5 into liner goes on first so it's a completely different cut it goes on the furniture then the fabric goes on top of the front liner you don't attach it unless you've got a really thin fabric and it needs a backing because it's too thin to work with you could glue it onto that or you could stitch it onto that it's ideal so that's all of my foams i've got here there's probably more that i haven't mentioned but i don't have them all here i don't have every foam here but i like to think that i've got enough so back on to my gosu's blue 39h i use loads of this 1 inch 2 inch half inch it's quite expensive as well so half inch i will use as a finish on like a dining chair or on an upholstered inside back something like that or a front border if it needs to be quite thick or i use it on bench seating i'll go two inch two inch foam and then this over the top to give it a nice round edge two inch blue 39h with a half inch 39h over the top nice finish white more for inside backs and headboards this is the super soft you could use this for headboards i don't think you'll notice the difference on the buttoning but if you're doing like a fluted headboard i would use the 36 or if you're doing an inside back that's having cushions on top of it go for the 36 soft although it's quite soft it's 36 soft it's a little bit firmer it's a little bit firmer than gold and pink so if you were doing outdoor seating cushions for a seating area on bricks i would probably use like a four inch version of this or go for the pink medium high density spring back foam very good quality i wouldn't use the soft outdoors this is for sprung seats what i also use this for say you're doing an upholstered seat so you've got a dining chair an armchair and there's no cushion on it so it's got real nice foam seating i would use like five inch of this on top of the hessian then back to the half inch blue over the top to give you a nice sort of firm and nice finish but also nice and squishy as well and then darker on the out of everything i say that sometimes backgrounds are pain in the ass because the thing is with that crown you have to be careful if you need to drill through dacron do not drill straight through the dacron staple so if you're going to staple staple one two three four make a square and then drill through the middle of that because that means the dacron is not going to get caught and because sometimes you drill through if there's dacron you're going to pull all that dacron onto that drill bit and it is a nightmare so be careful if you are going to drill through dacron make sure you staple and you close it off essentially so you can't catch a background and pull it all through because if you've got a headboard and you've already upholstered it and you need to drill through and make a hole for whatever reason and it catches a bit of that dacron you're gonna see it all come out that headboard and you're gonna have to do it again so bear that in mind so that's the introduction to foam for upholstery hopefully you find this video helpful so thanks for watching guys and we'll see you next time you
