all right this is step three in getting your own truck and authority evidently if you're at this video you've decided that you're going to do your own Authority apply for it now before we even get started I kind of want to explain a few things where you can look up the status on your MC number when you do apply and the two other steps that you have to make before your authority will be granted also want to make very clear that there is a 21 day 21 business day grace period it's actually a 14 day but the FMCSA says is the 21 day so I'm going to repeat what they say you can actually have an authority active within 21 days now what this means is once you apply for your MC number do T number and do all the filings that you need to do for this authority to go granted doesn't matter what you do you can pay anybody a rush service whatever it's going to be 21 days you will not speak the process up I'm gonna explain wine underneath the United States will laws anybody starting a business there is a right by we the people to dispute them opening a business I've never seen anybody disputed getting their own authority but the federal government has to obey the law and therefore we have to wait 21 days that gives anybody in the United States the right to dispute you get your own authority so now that we've covered that don't go online and apply for your MC number and go get vinyl and slap it on your doors and start running down the road because if you get caught it is a pretty phat fine also don't quit your job if you're already leased onto a carrier there is nothing illegal of operating under somebody else's authority until this authority goes active so what I'm saying if you're least onto one of the major carriers stay doing what you're doing because you need to turn that revenue for those 21 days now once your authority becomes active you could go ahead and slap the vinyl on your doors and go ahead and have all your permits to gather and have them in your truck that way when the 21 days is up you're out the door and running down the road now I'm going to come to explain how I did my authority as we go along and I'm all show you how to go and check on an authority the first website you need to come to a safer web this is pretty much the FMCSA s go to website but you can also go directly to the FMCSA website which we will go to and visit this that's where you'll need to apply for your authority in the find that website just cut off to say for it to be to FMCSA dot d OT govt that would be the website that's to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration now and safer web here you can just about get to any service that you're looking for in the trucking industry whether you want to update your DoD number or if you want to go check somebodies authority or you want to go check a company safety rating anything like that I'm gonna go to a company snapshot just kind of show you my authority if you go to company snapshot click on it it's going to open up this I'm going to look it up by my MC number that guys the let y'all know this is nothing confidential and when you apply for your authority your authority is going to go public spontaneously just as soon as you push that submit button your phone is going to blow up with every salesman in the United States want to sell you POC threes insurance you name it services but this right here basically shows safety rating of a carrier and as you can see I've had for inspections one on vf1 three on driver I've never been put out of service I've been in business working on three years now and if you go to SMS over here in the top right-hand corner this will show you what those inspections work if you scroll down here you got unsafe driving you got crash indicator which is not public as the server's compliance vehicle maintenance controlled substance and I'll call hazardous material which is not public and then Driver fitness if you go into driver fitness got to push the button first ever you'll see that we don't have any problem with driver fitness that's not it's because DLT do has not inspected us on that or anything laughs but let's go to vehicle maintenance we did have an ordeal where the driver that was leased to me he did not his abs light was not working on the trailer so that's got us six points there see how that kind of works and if you really want to look at the violation some region go to the violation summary ABS malfunction lamps in proper required lamp photos violation points is for two which equals six inspection history you go down and get a lot of information from this website and then it tells you here it tells you also the violation the plate on the truck this is not my truck this is actually my owner operator that was leased to me and if you want to see the violation you can go and pull it up right here that's what I'm saying guys everything is public information there's nothing confidential anybody wants to you know go look up your authority and find out if you're running outlaw and keep getting violations in your own safe driver the where they can come to and they can see whether it's an honor operator there's least to your if it's a company driver so just wanted to kind of show you that kind of give you a little tour on that now we're going to just back out and go back to seifer's web licensing and insurance this is where you want to check use to check your authority we're going to type in my authority eight five five seven nine and then we're going to come down here till the thing I'm not a robot as you can see this is my authority when you come in here this is what the termination sees and all the companies out there that will be contacting you this is the website they come to to get your information to call you this is your MC number information this is your license now you'll see right here it says authority status active I'm contract authority you got common contract and broker and then down here you got property passenger household private and enterprise now under I recommend contract authority because every time you sign the paperwork for a broker or a bill late in your under contract that's the purpose of a contract authority means your rates are negotiable common actually means that your your rates are set in stone basically like Greyhound you people will pay a flat rate however this right here will sometimes become a headache calling general Freight in our industry because a I've seen cases where guys had an opportunity to have a customer and because they were common authority they wouldn't let them sign the contract you know it's all basically by lawyers and things like that so it really don't make a big difference and by the way when you get contract you have to get your general liability insurance on file with the feds but you don't have to have your cargo insurance on with the Fed doesn't mean you don't need cargo but the reason why I say that is if you're all in a dumptruck business and all you're hauling dirt and gravel I probably don't have a value so if you go and file common Authority then you have to send a letter over exempting you from cargo insurance the bad thing about that is if you do decide to haul something worth about you then you'll have to go in and remove that exemption and get your cargo insurance on file with the feds but if you'll go ahead and just do contracting you ain't never got to worry about the car going you don't have to file an exemption of cargo doesn't mean you got a hat don't have to have cargo for your customer your car customer sets the cargo rates the industry standard is a million dollars general liability and a hundred thousand dollar cargo those may fluctuate based on the product that you're hauling if you're hauling things like beef or a hazardous material you will be required to have a higher general liability and a higher cargo yeah especially in the beep if they will require you to have two million dollars general liability and two hundred thousand dollars worth of cargo just all that beep so that's just kind of heads up if you're just hauling normal everyday phrase like toilet paper roll paper or electronics things like you get away with a million dollars general liability on a hundred thousand dollar cargo as you can see down here the insurance requirements only 750,000 set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration however I have a million dollars worth of general liability you can see I do have cargo I have a hundred thousand dollars worth of cargo but I don't have to post it with the FMCSA if I was common Authority you would see how much how much cargo insurance I have on file which you can see a hundred thousand dollars right there down this bond down here for brokers if you're not a broker then you won't have a problem you that will never be on there now if you decide that you're going to start a trucking company and a broker to you don't want them under the same MC number because chances are your insurance company will not write your policy on that MC number if they see broker on your authority if they see where your broker authority is pending they will have you get that removed so don't go in and you know you want to start your broker license and as well as your trucking company you want to do two separate MC numbers so therefore they need to be two different companies and I'm gonna explain the reason why you have a million dollars general liability on the company because you have a trucking company and then you only have a $75,000 surety bond for the broker division of your trucking company but they're still the same company therefore if somebody files a lawsuit against your broker division they're not only going to be eligible to get $75,000 charity fund they also have access to a million dollars worth of general liability the general liability protects the general public that is not fix your trucks or anything like that that is if you hurt somebody fail to pay somebody they can go after that surety bond or your insurance so just kinda explain why insurance companies will not fit an insurance for a million dollars on a broker division a lot of broker divisions go out of business pretty quick so and most of them go out of business for not paying their debts so therefore insurance companies won't write a policy on it now on L&I as you can see here's moment BOC 3 my PLC 3 was purchased by SK B truck and permits I've known these people a long time I would trust them on doing the BL C 3 but guys I want you to understand something on a BOC 3 you can find BOC threes out there for $20 $30 good for the life of the company but there's also a company I recommend that charge forty five fifty dollars to get a BOC three and it's good for the life of the company the good thing is the company I recommend has been around since the 80s and a lot of these new companies that are out here have only been in business for two three four years if that company goes out of business their BOC 3 will fall off on your authority and when that BOC 3 falls off on your authority you will get a letter in the mail claiming that your BOC 3 has fallen off if you don't get it replaced within 30 days they will suspend your authority I've experienced drivers especially single guys don't have a wife at home checking their mail or maybe their wives fail to open their mail like my wife they will not get that letter until that 30 days has exceeded because a lot of drivers under their own authority or so busy out on the road running 30 days at a time 45 days out at a time that they don't receive that letter personally next thing you know they're pulled in to scale house and d-o-t tells them you have no authority here's a fine got to get drunk park until the authorities reactivated it becomes a real big mess so I I know this person here and I check this on a weekly basis my MC number on a monthly basis at least to make sure that it that skp is not falling off if skp falls off I will either go to Ohio or I will go to all American process agents dimers to us some of the best companies pay a little more for that BOC three but you guarantee is not going to fall off because they're not going out of business anytime soon just kind of a cautious out there for you now as you look here if you look at my active and pending insurance you will see that oh I did in its oh I de risk retention group that's their insurance company it was posted on a 24 2014 effective date was a 28 2014 and this thing is still active you'll see that I've never had any interns rejected I believe in stand with the insurance company you'll see my insurance history I've never had another insurance company bending applications revoke patient's all this stuff is public information and then we can go back to carrier detail now up as you can see my my insurance was pitted on on what was then terms let me go back and look at that again want to make sure a line to y'all 8:28 2014 now let's go look at the authority history 8 28 2014 9 8 2014 is when my authority was granted I'm going to explain how I did this Authority I was leased on to a carrier prior to getting my authority and in March of 2014 I applied for my authority which cost me $300 I'm paid for the BOC 3 and I had got quotes on insurance during that time I save my money and I got my UCR I got my tags I got everything I needed and I picked them in the truck during that time and then 9 if you'll go back 828 when I did the insurance I called the insurance company and told them to put it on this MC number when hadn't paid them I purchased the insurance four days prior as you can see from a twenty eight till nine eight from the purchase at four days prior to them posting it and then after they post it took what eight nine ten days 12 days for my authority to go granted so on nine eight I quit the company that I was leased to which I had already put in the two weeks notice when I I knew I was going to get my insurance something in my two weeks notice if I was going to be out of work it was only going to be for a couple days my insurance went on file re had the vinyl in my truck already had the tag in my truck so whenever everything said and done I went to a truck stop there in Florida slapped all my decals on slapped on all my ferments you know my if two stickers my tag everything like that and then I started pulling for myself I went and picked up a trailer and started pulling free so you can do this in steps and because you're least on the carrier you don't have to miss a beat on making your income and then slowly but surely start your own trucking business that's just way that I did however now let's get down to the nitty-gritty if you go to the FMCSA is website and from safer web if you go back to here FMCSA registration update doesn't take you to the website there's one thing else I want to show you guys if you go to back to license and an insurance and you want to see what blanket companies are out there see this is five BOC three filing for process agents to file it for you but if you go to blanket companies that's what BOC three stands for is blanket of coverage or companies whatever you want to print say it is just got a blanket companies and push go and this is all the blanket of companies in the United States you will see on our operators Oh autos right here and I'm gonna kinda explain the BOC three this is why you have to get one of these and have it applied on your authority for you to do business in the United States let's just open up their BOC three now this is every single agent that works for Oh item they don't just work for a while you will see these same agencies on other people's BOC three these are what you call Process Servers and let's just say you in Alabama and you have an accident in Rhode Island Denise here is the one that the sheriff will serve your legal documents to if a lawsuit is brought against you in most cases you don't have to be served because in most cases you're contacted your insurance pays out if there is a lawsuit involved usually you've got a lawyer the lawyer communicates back and forth to the other lawyer so therefore nobody gets cert but in the case that they can't get in touch with you and they have to file a warrant for your arrest or you know subpoenaed you to court or whatever they will send your legal documents to Denise they just can't mail these things to you that to be personally served so the sheriff will go serve Denise at this address what did Denise we'll do is look up and see who your process server is which is aa DES she will forward those documents to all Ida Oh Ida like we said you live in Alabama oh I don't walk on tack the agent and Alabama which is Linda he oh I des will forward those overnight to Linda and Linda will walk up to your place of residence or your place of business and serve your legal documents if she's unable to serve you she will do everything in her power do a trip trace she will do background he'll go through the water code electric companies nationwide on I mean she'll do everything in her power to hunt you down if she cannot find you she will send all documents that she has in her possession that she did her job and forward it back no Otto Heidel for defective Denise in Rhode Island and Denise will take those documents to the sheriff at that point it becomes a major issue because they can't get you in a courtroom so therefore you may get pulling us gals out there somewhere during this time your authorities already been dismissed if they're unable to get you so at that point you know it becomes a major deal then but that's the reason why you've got to have a BSD 3 on file before they will even grant your authority and you must maintain one on file because if they fall off your authority will be dismissed but we're going to go back on out here we're going to go straight to the website the apply for the authority this is a great website to come to if you're looking for DLT regulations here's where you'll find it safety news anything you want to find out with the FMCSA this is their own website if you want to go directly to their own page this is what it looks like you'll go up here to registration and then what you'll do here apply for USD LT number and click here are you a motor carrier transporting property of passenger in commerce yes I'm an interstate carrier yes I mean just answer truthfully on this dude do one or more of the following apply I am a 4-iron motor carrier yes I'm just going through how I apply for my authority y'all may have to make some changes they ask you those few questions to begin with over here your new applicant the reason for the returned applicant once you get to a certain point in here it would ask you to put in a password that way within the next 30 days if you have to walk away from the computer while applying for your authority when you come back and login it is start back up where you left off sometimes that happens like you may have to go run a load real quick and can't finish the application or you may have to go cut the grass because it's about to rain there's all kinds of reasons why but your new applicant is going to ask you am a robot sometimes it'll pop up a cup of coffee there asks you to it have like 10 different pictures and ask you to select all the pictures that have coffee and all this trying to do is make sure you're not a computer generated then you'll go next over here I want to explain on these pages you have next here use this menu over here at the bottom it also say right here please click Next you can use that as well do not use any part of your browser up here don't refresh don't do any of that and this is going to explain all that to you you'll move on this here will explain your employee identification number I recommend any I am any employer identification number instead of a social security number he I am the reason why I recommend that is because you're going to be passing this paperwork on to many different people like your insurance agent your brokers and I don't want them having my social security number because I don't want them to personally be able to run charges or open accounts in my name and stuff flag you never know fraud today dun and bradstreet is not required and then call company officers and titles they're just explaining to you what you're going to need to apply for the application you can read over everything I have a simple solution to everything but you'll just continue going on next it does you in there you need a process agent must get one here to tell you that you got to have insurance for your authority to go active just read all this stuff and then it's here's where it asks you for password now once you create the password and then you scroll down and you confirm password and then you come here to question no question let's see if they got a question all right let's see one all right I guess you get a tap through all these I've never done thority on this database they just changed it over when I applied for mine it was the old system I guess you gotta take that know select out for it to show you the questions tell em I get it show me the questions I'm just betting some questions in here guys because it's asking me to fit them in there I'm gonna go in as far as we can I will be applying for a buddy of Mines authority here in the next week or two push save and just go next this is if you're hiring an agent or a consultant to apply for your authority if you were to hire me to fly for this Authority they're gonna give you a place where you can add me in there so I can go in and do it for you all right here's where you choose the contact type I don't know if it's because I'm using Google Chrome but as you can see applicant representative or company contact you put your company contact but in your first name this is if they need to contact you for any reason come on down here's your phone numbers this is your email or that's in you email and just fill this out and go next next next it's pretty simple what I hear I will be doing one in a couple weeks however I've heard it's very time-consuming I've not done it but what I'm going to show you to do so you have all your answers next to you let's go ahead and get out of here we're going to push leave if you'll go back to the web site here and you go down here to others there's two forms you can get to help you get through this process what I recommend doing is printing these forms out fill them out then go to online and do it online do not mail these forms in because they take forever for your authority to be granted one is the MCS 150 which that is applying for your DLT number that's the application for it just click on it get it take you over here and it comes out as a PDF or you got that PDF open this is basically what it looks like this is the application coming here and fill it out here's all the questions down here all your information I'm going to kind of go through this stuff with you and then the next one let's just go back would be the op1 application this is for your MC number or you got it open up here you just click on that get it bring it up to a PD up and we're going to open that PDF up when filing for your authority guys answer these questions honestly but when you're filing for an authority I'm Everett Madison truck and so this is how my authority was applied if you seen it online while ago all right I'm Everett Madison doing business as ever Madison trucking the most common mistake I see in people's applications is if their corporation they will pit like that well that's not correct your legal name will be your LLC or your corporations name and therefore you wouldn't have a DBA you do not have to do a DBA if it's a you don't have to put anything in the DBA if you're just going to do business as Everett Madison trucking LLC then that's all you got to have on your doors and that would be in the legal name you would turn it over here and then this would be blank I'm not incorporated but I did want to show you that you do want to put your corporation your LLC any legal name in the legal business name that's not always your name if you're like me doing a DBA then it will be your name and whatever you want to D be a it out as so underneath the corporation you're going to be required to have all the officers names you would fill all this information out we're going to scroll down and I'll show you corporations what state of incorporation if your sole provider ship like myself you would just put the name of the owner if you have partners you would put all the partners on now online it's a little different you're not going to fill this out this is just a paper format that I want you to print out and write it all down that way you've got all your information when you go to do it online then you're going to come up to a type of authority your Motor Carrier property exempt household goods I do want to explain household goods is products that you're pulling out of someone's home or someone's storage unit if you're going to lazyboy warehouse and picking up a junk load of furniture and you're delivering it to a store across country that is not considered household goods that's considered property appliances same thing unless they're coming out of somebody's house it's not household goods now here you got common and contract I recommend contract we already talked about that most guys that are pulling for brokers and shippers need contract common if you end up getting coming then you end up getting gum and somewhere down the point somebody's gonna let you pull their Freight now the big guys if you want to go and waste another $300 it's just another 300 oh just another 300 oh you can have both there's no reason that you gave up a lot of the big guys have both if you go and look good any of the big major carriers out there they're common and contract the reason being is the government will require you if you're going to all any kind of government equipment like tanks of boats or anything for the government you will be required to have an uncommon Authority because they do everything on their rates which is tariffs in their flat rate feed I hear they play pretty good when they pay so however each one of these is $300 so if you want to get common in contract the property exempt household goods and if you're talking about brokers brokers fill out the same information the only difference is is they just get a broker licensed property exempt household goods or brokers of household goods so I mean either or done hazardous materials 750,000 is making you understand you got to have $750,000 worth of general liability which the industry standard is amazed in and then hazardous waste as this material goes up just going to read these questions anthro mouth they're very simple questions you don't have to do that part right there because inside the internet they're going to ask you to verify that you know under perjury you understand the DLT rules and regulations and that you must be a member of a drug consortium and we will cover that as well this is your MCS 1:50 this is for your DLT number pretty much same information I just gotta wanted to show you all your interstate carrier if you're doing drive for a reefer flatbeds you're an interstate carry one across state line difference between interstate and intrastate interstate gives you the right to cross state lines the reason why on this application they're asking you if your intro is this is your do team number you just filed in the op1 application means you're one the cross state lines so you're going to be an interstate carrier now if you're coming to this site just to get your dl d number and you're just going to run in the state of texas will never leave Texas then you're going to go enter all state they don't even have it on this application I don't know why oh yeah right here they I don't know why they make it so complicated they just ship it enter all carrier and then over there have intro hazmat but they put it as not as map this is what you would do is if you were applying for an authority and you're never going to leave the state of Texas this way at the end of the filing all they issue you as a DoD number now don't cost anything to have a DoD number DoD numbers are free so they will ask for your credit card but they're not going to charge you $300 unless you click this button right here interstate okay as long as you just have intro they won't charge your credit card but one penny they charge the one so they have a valid record that you are who you say you are applying for this do t number so anyway we're not going to get into that we're just going to get into the interstate right now and then your authority for our exempt for hire would be people that are of better like NASCAR drivers they're exempt for hire all they do is haul that car around the country they would be considering exempt for hire anybody that's going to lay their all in their trade shows stuff to each trade show they would be exempt for hire but you're authorized for our private property and easiest way to explain this is if you make hate UK and you bail it and you sell it to somebody in Kansas and you want to have your own equipment transporting that hey up there to Kansas then it's your property kind of like pine straw sellers to Walmart and Home Depot you know they parked that trailer out there with pine straw on the bot box their private property alright that would be their carrier because they're not going to reload them junky trailers back with product and stuff it's just for pine straw that's what that's for and then you know this just kind of explains that but anyway you're authorized for our down here is what kind of cargo you're going to be all in I'm general Freight and as you seen I had paper products on mine and I think I had beverages that was it okay that's what I had on mine any of those apply to you just click them drive away tow away is not doing power only drive away do away is tow trucks then you get down in the hazmat section down here and then this this question is asked on there as well your vehicles they're going to know their own term lease or trip leaves owned means you're financed into a finance company or you actually owe the title term lease term lease means that you're leasing the equipment back to your company and some drivers do that because they don't want the truck to be in the corporation's name so they personally own the truck but their business is in the corporation's name so they at least that truck back to the corporation or for instance I was to come and lease on to you I would be a term lease any carrier that's anybody least onto you would be a considered a term lease trim please this is if you're leasing your equipment from a writer let's just say rider here you're leasing a truck from rider and you're pulling Franklin's riders truck or you're just needing this truck just to finish up a couple trips because your truck has been wrecked and it's in the shop getting fixed that's what a that's what a trip lease is what they're asking for if you have a straight truck and you got one straight truck on and you got one tractor-trailer let's just say it's true please say you lease a guy on and he has a trailer so now you got two trucks and one trailer basically down here in the next section within a hundred-mile radius beyond on a mile race if you're running state to state you're probably going to be outside of on a mile radius so you right here would say interstate of two drivers you got two trucks two drivers the owner operators considered a driver so anyway the next question over here total drivers to CDL holders could be one let's just say the guy driving the straight truck might be you driving the straight truck and you don't have a set of CDLs you just have a regular drivers license straight truck don't require CDL s so therefore you don't have CDLs but your tractor-trailer guy he has to have CDL so therefore es CDLs so you still have two drivers one CDL drivers then it asks you the question is your deal T never ever been revoked and guys this paper application has a lot of instructions explaining things to you that's the reason why I say print it out sit down fill it out and then go online and apply for your authority if you have any questions I'm pretty much going to end this video if you have any questions on getting your authority don't hesitate to ask me I will get back with you now quick review after you've already applied for your authority these are the two companies that I recommend that you go get your BOC 3 from my recommendation on this as soon as you apply for your authority and you submit that button and you're given a MC number a DLT number you will also be given a do t pin number make sure that you put what I always do is print that page out however make sure that you keep that do t pin number in a safe place because that is the pin number that you will be asked for every time that you do a do t update you must update your do t number every two years myself I update my do t number every time something changes in my business if I add a truck or take a truck away or add a trailer take a trailer away if I do anything in my business like that I go ahead and update it then that way I'm always up on top of my Bicentennial updates however you can do it once a year always going there every year and update the miles that I ran and travel during that year so forth so keep your do T number up-to-date they will turn it off if it ain't been logged in and updated if you don't do anything but to log in and log back out at least do that once every two years do not lose that PIN number because you will not be able to get into your account and you will have to call the United States Department of Transportation and request a new PIN number now the other company I recommend to get my BOC 3 from is All American agents of process they're like 50 bucks or $45 but however I would go here there's yes $50 no annual renewal fees they're good for the life of the company the only time you ever have to pay is I'm not if I'm not mistaken with all American the only time that you have to pay is if you ever have to be served other than that you'll never have to pay a dime these are two companies I recommend to get the BOC 3 I recommend just as soon as you submit that button you decide which one of these companies you want I would contact them you they should have a place on here where you can go up pay online anyway I would go ahead and get them to do it that way it starts your 21 day countdown period if you don't get a B lc3 on in an insurance on your authority will not even start its countdown this is what starts the countdown for the 14-day grace period so you're going to be out of 300 dollars for the authority and $50 for the B lc3 350 bucks to get just process started now remember if you go beyond 90 days your authority will beep it in a dismissed status now it don't cost anything for the first 12 months the undecided or 'ti like in my case I went past that 90 days all I had to do in which I got a video coming out that will cover this on how to undeceive you got 12 months from the time you apply to the time that you do it's totally dismissed and therefore you have to pay another $300 to reinstate it because it never became active so basically you're getting a whole new number really here be keeping the number but it's like getting a whole new number again but if you go past 90 days you're going to have to reinstate it but what I recommend is if you go ahead and put the B LC 3 on it starts doing the countdown process even if it does go dismissed and you have to reinstate it it's free it don't cost nothing to reinstate it at that point what they call it is not really a reinstatement they call it an undestand sign it and fax it in to the FMCSA and request them to unda sit at the same time you would go ahead and get your insurance on file but hopefully you don't go beyond the 90 days hopefully you do it within the first 90 days in that case they're this BOC 3 will start that countdown process once the BOC 3 is on they start counting down 21 days now say the 19th day you finally get your insurance on file about the 25th date your authority will go active you already surpassed that 21 day grace period so I'll recommend don't get your insurance on file immediately because you got that 21-day grace period and you'll be paying premiums on that insurance and not ran for 21 days so I don't recommend doing it immediately after applying for the authority so kind of recover why for your authority get your BS III on file decide who you're going to get your insurance to go ahead and do some other permits step 4 starting your own trucking business that'll be the name of the next video and in that video we're going to cover how to get your other permits that you're going to be required to run and why you're required to have them
