[Music] hey everyone Jason shaer here of m.com alongside my student for the day really not a student uh Scott Scott is our director of sales and marketing here at m.com he's also in charge of our CFI referral program so any CFI watching this uh if you want to get compensated for referring m.com products Scott you gu to talk to I'll make sure you uh have us contact underneath this video what we're talking about today is a steep spiral sometimes called and I call them steep spirals during my commercial pilot training uh now they're called an emergency descent and what we're going to do is we're actually at 4,000 ft we're right over top the Ocala airport I'm going to call the tower and see if we can get permission for a steep spiral that emergency descend on down for a landing 36 and what the purpose of this is is uh maybe I have uh I need to get down quickly uh maybe uh my engine's out and the point I need to land is right beneath me we can do that steep spiral to get on down and literally cork screw on down to our Landing site so first things first you got to get permission for this sort of stuff because it's a very unconventional way to enter into the traffic pattern so let's give uh Okala Tower a call here morning Okala Tower Skyhawk 715 Niner kbec 715 ner back good morning Warren sir we're right over top the airport 4,000 ft with information Alpha wonder if we could just steep spiral down for a landing on 36ar that's approved uh Runway 36 clear land 36 clear land I appreciate that 59 go back oh that was easy Scott you got 36 out your window down there 3 all right so what I'm going to do is I'm going to turn the carburetor heat on I'll bring this power back to idle and I'm going to go about a 60 three Bank as crazy as that sounds right over top 36 here there's 36 and I'm going bring it on out I'm going roll us on down and watch what this does to our altitude here as we kind of just bring it on down keeping some good positive air flow not really pulling any G's like you I'm sure you and I both done it's got steep turns where you're you're you're pulling some G's you know from pulling back to much and just kind of bring this thing out we're a th000 feet per minute but it doesn't really feel like it right now we're just kind of just we got a good little bank and we're a little bit more than a thousand feet per minute we're cooking on down if you need to get down in a hurry this is certainly a way to do it this is something new they added last year to the pts now to become the ACs Airman certification standards and this is very well something that could show up on your check right here I'm going to take out just a little bit of bank so I can kind of drift uh actually right over top uh 36 here still about 1,000 ft per minute though just kind of keeping this thing coming down even like in a 30° Bank like this get us right over top 36 here it comes and there we go back around my one of my old old instructors used to teach me doing you know many years ago doing my commercial pilot training you get the point you want to land on underneath your tire okay and then you kind of just bank right over top of it so we're pretty darn close there Okala Tower is gracious enough to already clear us to land and we're just going to literally from 4,000 ft just power off bring this thing all the way down one thing I'm a fan of too doing Scott is I like to do what's called a clearing burst I like to let the engine idle like this long so I'll take the throttle and just kind of rev it up and bring it back to idle just just so I feel good that I know my engine still work you know what I mean yeah so we just kind of spiraling on down I still got 36 right down there and we're just spiraling right over top the airport I'm sure everybody down the ground right now is probably wondering what on Earth is going on but not bad halfway there passing through 2,000 ft as we're coming on down just really boogieing our way on down and you know I used to really struggle with like um nausea and that sort of stuff very early on in my train I know Scott you expressed you know that was kind of an issue for you as well I mean it's hard in Florida in the summertime where it's hot and you're doing steep turns and and turns around a point that sort of stuff but this maneuver because it's such a low G maneuver really isn't that bad and you're so focused on what you're doing outside um that that nausea isn't really a concern um with I know a lot of you watch this going geez I don't know if I could do turn after turn after turn coming on down but um everything's looking good what I'm going to do is I'm probably going to do just one more turn cuz I'm at, 1500 ft this is where good timing comes in handy right I'm at500 ft and I want to be in this exact position I'm in right now which is like a really tight downwind uh and another 360 degrees so CU I I want to treat this just like a normal normal Landing here I'd like to have a tight downwind based final um in this case so pass it through 13300 ft I think I'm going to be able to do that AOK here um I keep that coming on around coming on around 12200 ft uh just coming around one more clearing burst just in case I do a go around or something like that I it's all good and this is going to be perfect Scott cuz here we are at 1100 almost 1,000 ft and I'm basically turning out on a modified like uh really tight down with here and now this now this maneuver has just become a power off 180 which we did a video about you know a few months ago so um what I'm going to do now here at 1,900 ft is I'm going to kind of roll out um and notice I haven't used any flaps anything like that just yet I could I know I've got that Runway made uh but I'm not going to I'm going wait here just a little bit to kind of keep this thing flying on out 800 ft looking good looking good um still at like 600 feet per minute coming on down now I think I'll add some flaps going 10° here car be's already back the four land checklist is already done and we're clear to land uh and I'm going to go ahead and turn a nice tight base here again 600 500 ft this is where we're typically at on a base anyways gr we're a little bit tighter uh than uh than we normally are and just kind of keep this turn coming on around looking good here bringing it on in and around and there's my numbers 3 six once I get my wings level here I'll dump in just a little bit more in the flap department and bring this thing on in noing it on down nice positive air flow and we're aiming for like those th000 foot marks down there that's what they paav 9,000 ft of runway for and we're bringing this thing on in and just like that from 4,000 ft down to the ground in you know relatively quick a lot faster than you could do it um you know any other way so there we are nice little landed on Center Line and we'll bring this thing on in and see what uh what tower uh wants us to do here um steep spiral as it's sometimes called it's more so called an emergency descent uh right now according to P PTS ACS uh guidelines and it kind of gives you uh uh just another another tool in your in your flight bag really to uh uh to knock out so guys I hope you really really uh enjoyed this video any questions any comments feel free to leave me a comment down below this video on m.com you know you'll get a reply from
