i read an article that said the devil doesn't greatly mind if we go to church on sunday as long as that is the extent of our focus on the things of god it's when we live with the awareness of the presence of god and allow his spirit to control our lives that the devil gets upset it takes much more than a couple of hours per week to be a godly christian who makes an impact on the world it takes sustained time in his presence how true is that time alone with god is crucial for every believer we need to abide in him to be still and know that he is god you see the devil is a deceiver and a liar the only way that we can be safe from his schemes is when we abide under the shadow of the almighty this race we're in it's a race for our salvation it's a race to the finish line which is eternity with jesus now it's not an easy race it's not a short race either they say that if you're going to be a long distance runner you begin the race in your mind preparation for a long run begins way before your feet hit the ground everything you eat and drink it all counts and those steps are designed to build your endurance so as we run the good race of faith we need to remember that our endurance also involves our mind the renewal of our mind a mind fixated on the end goal which is eternity with jesus and to endure we need the word of god the word of god that builds endurance in our faith the word of god that gives strength to our spirit man so enduring as a christian means much more than just putting up with trials or adversity what does spending time with someone do for relationship on the most basic level it helps you get to know the other person there's only so much you can learn about someone by reading about them at some point you must actually go and spend time with them only then can you see them in their element you can see their habits their quirks and their tendencies but without spending quality time with a person there is no way that you can get to know them on a deep intimate level another aspect of spending quality time with someone is that it also exposes you it doesn't allow you to hide behind screens and facades you will only be able to maintain that best foot forward stance for so long eventually your true self will come out for good or for bad these are all examples of why it's so important to spend time with god how do you expect to grow closer to god if we don't spend time with him how do we expect to develop an intimate relationship if we neglect quality time there are several things that spending time with god does for us [Music] first it helps us to develop an intimate personal relationship with the lord spending time in prayer or in worship spending time being still and knowing that he is god spending time meditating on his word and reading scripture puts us in a position to be able to commune with god and get to know him on a personal level what does he love what does he hate what makes him happy what makes him sad what are the most important things to him what does he value what does he want from me these are the things that we learn from spending quality time with the lord we learn who he is we learn what he expects from us as his children what his will is for our lives spending time with the lord is invaluable now the second thing is spending time with god helps to strengthen our faith don't make the mistake of thinking that god is the one who benefits from us taking the time to get to know him that's not the case spending time with god doesn't help god as much as it helps us god already knows us he knows our secrets and the depths of our thoughts and motivations he knows what we try and hide in the cover of darkness he knows all and sees all [Music] it's us that need to know him we're the ones that are called in the book of malachi where the lord says test me in this and see if i will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it we need to know that we can trust him no matter what and there's no other way to develop trust than to spend quality time with someone you wouldn't want to go to battle with someone you don't know how would you know you could count on them when the going gets tough you only know from experience and that experience is gained through quality time spending quality time with god helps us to become more acquainted with the character of god that includes faithfulness loving kindness mercy and long-suffering the final thing that spending time with god it does for us it reveals who you are it is the light of god that our true selves are revealed it is next to the radiance of christ that our darkness is exposed it is next to the purity of christ that our dirt is uncovered once these things are brought to light only then can we submit them to god spending time with god holds a mirror back to us to show us how much we need him understand that when you neglect relationship with god when you neglect that still small voice that tugs at your heart then your relationship weakens it withers this happens because we are not abiding in christ to abide is to dwell to reside to remain stable or to be infixed in a state that's why psalms 91 says he who dwells in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the almighty when you spend time in god's presence you reside you remain in a fixed state under the shadow of the almighty god the creator now i don't know about you but there is no better place to reside no better place to dwell than in the shadow of jehovah in the shadow of elohim think of the protection you're covered by the grace you're under the overwhelming love and forgiveness you're covered by spending time with the lord making time for the lord should be your lifestyle it should be a habit a routine whether it suits you to do it first thing in the morning or at the end of your day it should be something you practice always so i challenge each and every one of you to put together an intentional plan to spend more time with god every day can you spare 20 minutes in the morning 10 minutes before bed five minutes during your lunch break whatever it is carve out a pacific time each day to spend with god in prayer bible study contemplation or worship you will get to know god on a deeper level strengthen your faith and purify yourself in the presence and light of god i'd like to speak to you on the topic of standing strong in the lord standing strong in faith and i'll begin with the statement that i think you'll all agree with and that is if there's one thing that we can be certain about in this life it's the fact that life is often very unpredictable one moment you're on a high the next moment you come crashing down one moment is all good it's peaceful and safe and in the next moment it feels as though all hell breaks loose you're at the top of the mountain one minute and you're walking through the valley of the shadow of death the next minute but if there's one thing to come to terms with in life it's the reality that life is unpredictable but here's the thing i am so grateful for the fact that in this ever-changing life we have a never-changing god jesus christ is the same yesterday today and forevermore he doesn't change he healed thousands of years ago on this earth and he still heals today he loved those considered to be unlovable those considered to be outcasts and rejects and he still loves those same people today he spoke the words peace be still and the storm bowed down and i believe he can and will speak those very same words in the middle of your storm today that's why when life happens you can stand strong in the lord don't allow life's challenges to shake your faith in god stand strong in the lord stand and let him fight your battles he has promised that the deep waters won't drown us and when we go through the fire we will not be burnt so whether you're in the lion's den today or facing pharaoh tomorrow stand strong in your deliverer who is jesus we can trust him we can rely on him we can depend learn and stand strong in the lord but i'm not saying it will be easy i'm not saying it won't be tough but with god it's possible [Music] you know i've had moments where i thought really god i've just come out of one thing and now here's another you see when we say stand strong in the lord it's not always going to be easy i'm not saying that but what i am saying is that wouldn't you rather fall into the arms of the lord then simply fall while trying to do things your way when your back is against the wall wouldn't you rather lean on god than your own understanding as we face life's challenges our first impulse might be to surrender or to simply give up and let it be and i understand that sometimes i understand that sometimes you can get to the point of just asking the question god why me why am i not married yet why did i have to be sick why can't i make as much money as they are and while we may be stressed and pressed on every side i'd like to recommend something to you i would like to give you a formula that might help if you find yourself in that situation i would like to encourage you to stand strong in the lord because it is he who goes before you he will not fail you nor forsake you and that makes him so dependable that's what should give you the tenacity to stand strong in faith our lord has a track record that's unmatched one that stood the test of time so despite the chaos despite everyone else getting married despite that job interview coming back as a no keep standing strong in the lord he who started a good work in us will see it through to the end reach out to him by faith be constant in prayer be relentless in your faith and watch him move in seemingly impossible ways now this isn't just a quick fix there needs to be some persistence you need some tenacity to stand strong in the lore to stand and believe to stand and wait for what he has promised [Music] because when you stand you're making sure that there is no temptation that can overtake you you're making it known to the enemy that you trust god to have already provided a way of escape even if you can't see it you're guaranteed victory when you stand strong in the lord and the thing about standing strong in god is that it does take practice it takes a maturity of faith for you to be able to stand strong as a christian you go through one trial and god makes a way you go through a tougher trial and your belief is stronger but it's tested yet god still makes a way it's a maturing of faith and one of the keys to growth in terms of your faith in god is that it takes you actually cultivating a relationship with jesus christ he invites you to know him he invites you to seek knock and ask but with that your effort is required you have to make the effort you have to discipline yourself to read his word to pray daily it takes daily communion with him you have to count your blessings and shift your perspective so that you're filled with thanksgiving for all that he has done and here's why it's so important for you to do these things when you make prayer your practice when you practice not just reading the word but living the word when you appreciate god's goodness then this renews your faith in him each day this is the maturing of the faith by living for him each day when you then come to face tough times his word is ingrained in you prayer is a part of your lifestyle you have a personal relationship with the lord this is when you can stand strong this is the way you will fortify your spirit so that when the enemy surrounds you like a flood you will be able to stand strong in the lord i can assure you when you have an established relationship with jesus christ you will find that it becomes much easier to stand and be strong it will become your default stance and posture to trust god or run to hide and find refuge in him so i encourage you today to start a relationship with the lord today so that when the troubles come you will be able to stand strong in the lord maybe you're facing a situation that feels overwhelming maybe you feel stuck you're just barely keeping your head above water remember that being without hope goes together with being without god [Music] if you're without god you're without hope if you're with god you have a future don't underestimate the power of the word of god it's a living word a word that gives you hope it offers hope for all of life it offers hope for the sick it offers hope for broken marriages and relationships it offers hope for the most challenging problems we face the certainty of your hope should be based on christ meaning that even though everything might not go according to plan it is still working for my good that's the foundation we ought to have never giving up never losing hope because christ will never leave us nor forsake us my hope is in christ as the living and the written word of god the name of jesus is power when i hear his name i imagine all the miracles he performed i imagine him standing outside of the tomb and speaking out boldly lazarus come forth and a dead man comes back to life i imagine jesus christ standing in the middle of a storm and speaking with authority peace be still and even the storm bows down because there is power in the name of jesus you've heard it said prayer changes things pray without ceasing pray daily but today i'm telling you to pray until something happens that's what push means so when it feels like you've hit rock bottom push when the size of the problem in your life is twice the size of your own might push when trials come when setbacks frustrate you get on your knees start pushing on your knees pray until don't pray and move on don't pray and start thinking of worrying in the book of daniel chapter 10 he prayed and prayed and kept praying until he got his answer [Music] he understood the secret he understood that you have to pray and keep praying until until it happens until that breakthrough happens until that miracle happens push until that healing comes push until that victory comes push be relentless about it be intentional about it and above all else be prayerful about it pray until something happens for every fighter when they're in a fight there's a point when the game plan goes out the window all the clever footwork is forgotten the tactics don't matter anymore they are just told swing and keep swinging so to you soldier of god in this fight you're in forget about your cute prayers forget about an audience around you in this fight it's time to start swinging keep swinging keep swinging keep swinging and when i say keep swinging i mean that if you're waiting on god for something if you're believing god for something hold on a little longer don't give up now i don't know what you're facing today i don't know what breakthrough you need but i want to tell you hold on help is on its way don't give up now he's brought you too far don't break now keep swinging at that devil don't allow him to oppress you keep swinging at that depression at that anxiety don't allow it to overcome you keep swinging because that breakthrough that opportunity that miracle is on its way keep praying keep believing god is with you that same god protected daniel in a den full of lions will protect you and your family that same god who ordered joseph's footsteps from being kidnapped abandoned and enslaved from being put in the pit to the prison to the palace that same god will order your footsteps he's got it all planned out the same god who provided manna from heaven that's the same god who will provide for you the god who has the power to tell the storm and the wind peace be still that same god will tell the storms in your life to be still he will command the chaos around you to not affect you jeremiah 29 11 says i know the plans i have for you declares the lord plans to prosper you and not to harm you plans to give you hope and a future he has a plan even in your hopelessness he has a plan even in your pain even when things don't make sense when things don't add up when the odds aren't in your favor god has a plan in your pain he'll get you through that situation he'll order your steps so move forward and keep moving forward start swinging and keep swinging tell yourself if god be for me who can stand against me god says that you're the head and not the tail you're above and not below you're victorious and not the victim blessed in the city and blessed in the field blessed going in and going out so don't break now don't grow weary look to jesus he will renew your strength don't lose heart keep the faith and keep moving forward with faith in god keep moving forward and depending on god he will open doors god sees us at our breaking point and sometimes as humans we struggle to think how can god wait so long to deliver me but god's timing is perfect his ways are limited like ours his ways are higher and in the middle of the pressure when you think you've reached the breaking point when you can take no more that's when god intervenes keep swinging for you to experience the power of god for you to witness the hand of god there has to be a wall there needs to be some kind of adversity some type of challenge before god acts you can only break through when you hit a wall and we have all kinds of walls in our lives walls of limitations well you've never really believed there is more for your life walls built from things we've heard where you've been told this is as far as you can go walls of bitterness where you've been hurt before and you've been betrayed or walls of doubt where you believe god can do it for someone else but not for you walls of unforgiveness where you're still holding on to a grudge you're still holding on to a comet you still haven't forgiven there are all types of walls that we face and the funny thing about god is he'll never give you a breakthrough the way you want it and isaiah it says for my ways or not your ways my thoughts are not your thoughts so we can't think like god we can't anticipate how he moves or when he moves but we must believe that he will move your breakthrough will appear on the path of obedience on the path where you wait on god trust god and believe in god that's the road map to a breakthrough and god will make you wait that's why we are told throughout the bible for we through the spirit by faith are waiting for the hope of righteousness in galatians i wait for the lord my soul does wait and in his word do i hope in psalms 130 they that wait on the lord will renew their strength there's a blessing in waiting it has everything to do with god's timing your walls will come down when you wait on god your breakthrough will come when you wait on god the walls of jericho in your life regardless how big regardless how
