Starlink Internet in North Wales!

fiber is coming soon to your area it's not hi folks welcome back to the channel if you're new here my name is ben i'm a photographer and videographer based in north wales being based in north wales i have suffered greatly from pretty much lack of internet but i've just got home from a shoot and the poachman has been and this is what he's delivered yes okay so this is starlink this in particular is my starlink dish aka dishy let's get it open so as i'm opening this i'll tell you i have had this on my radar for quite some time i've been following all the beta testing and when they put it out for general public release i was straight on it i pre-ordered on 14th february and then just a few days ago 14th of april i got my link to pay saying it was ready to be dispatched paid it immediately and then two days later it was on its way to me and here it is today is monday the 19th of april 2021 this dispatched from california on friday the 16th so it is not taking long at all that is impressive shipping here she is i think i was supposed to open this on its back bear with me [Applause] okay so we get probably the biggest instruction set i've ever seen it does look pretty simple though top cover off and here we are so in no particular order there's my router i'm quite surprised just how small this is actually i've seen all the pictures i thought would be a bit bigger than that there's a tripod so our power cable with the very self-explanatory ports on the back we have the ethernet cable for the router and a huge ethernet cable for our dishi there she is there's quite a bit of weight to it i have to say that and there's a pack of regulatory notices in there as well and that is everything in the box let's get this away don't want to drop that okay so assembly let's go with the tripod and then the dish should slot straight into place there's two little pins one either side just pop those in twist and that's it set up nearly complete now before we go any further we're going to check the starlink app i'm not logged in or anything yet but we can check for obstructions so i'm thinking this garage is a new build and on the back of it we've got a good few feet of foundation exposed in theory i should be able to just sit it on there i've been checking in the app and vast majority of the time the cleopatra sky where we should have satellites has been out towards the back of the garage and looking out that way there's it's just a big field so hopefully that should work let's have a look and yeah right now the band is kind of that way on a diagonal but for the most part it is in fact out that side at the back of the garage so i'm going to set this up quite crudely to begin with just to make sure we actually have a signal and we'll see if we can get it connected all set up ready to go and what sort of speeds we can get let's go okay so this is the garage and here at the back we have this nice bit of concrete foundation exposed and out in front of it basically nice open field there's a couple of trees but with any luck they shouldn't affect it too much so we're going to try and set it up by there and see how it goes really [Music] okay i think this should do it i just want to set her down give it a bit of clearance from the garage wall and then i need to run this cable all the way down here i will cable manage this later don't worry over here so the dog can't get to it and then back around this may look too bright but there we go being careful not to dip my ethnic cable in the water but i've brought up the power adapter just outside here so i can now plug that in we've got a light which is a good thing and now we'll see if it's moving i think it's doing something but while it's sorting itself out we're going to go into my wi-fi settings there it goes it's doing something into my wifi settings switch that on and there she is starlink and we're connected so now we need to set up network name and passwords for my media starlink create so apparently now we will be disconnected from the router reconnect using new wi-fi network name and password let's change your wi-fi network name and password uh the network itself has changed its name so you can see now find my media style link put a password in now we're not yet connected to the internet apparently so it may just be a case of waiting while we're at it i'm just going to check the obstructions again you can see that our nice clear patch is still in the same place more or less there's the dish down there so i assume we should be able to get something but we'll see what it says ah so here in the app now it says it's connecting so while we're waiting for this to sort itself out i can show you quickly my current setup which is right up here so basically where i live we have the slowest broadband in the uk so yeah we are still on really ancient copper wiring big town that way called riffin they've got fiber in riffin big town that way called denby they've got fiber in denby but the highest speeds that we can get in this place is one megabit download and around 0.2 to 0.3 upload which for a video creator such as myself in 2021 is not ideal so you can imagine my excitement when i first heard about starlink um i've tried a couple of different methods currently i'm using this little satellite attached to the guttering which is wired through to a 4g router which i bought separately which i then pay for a sim card on a monthly basis with that i average maybe four to five megabit second download and the upload is still around 0.5 between 0.5 and 1 like a bit of second but it's been the best solution i could find until now so hopefully this works out for me i'm really hopeful it does it is expensive but i need it it's a business expense at the end of the day and currently the one major bottleneck in my business is internet connection so hopefully this will resolve it right so this does not seem to be working we've been waiting about 10 minutes or so and the dish is still pointing straight up it's clearly not finding any satellites i thought this might have been all right but maybe the overhang of the garage is a little bit too much so new plan i'm gonna try and plant it somewhere in the middle of the driveway or the lawn just to see if i can get it working okay so we're retrying in the middle of the lawn i checked with the obstruction checker oh it's moving and the dish basically rebooted and has now been reconnecting and we are now online apparently so let's go run a speed test this isn't quite as quick as i was hoping for so far i'll admit but it may be a case that needs a little more time to set itself up we'll see [Music] so real world test can i watch something on youtube i better play my own video so i don't get the copyright strike skip the yard let's see if we can change our resolution so 4k that is not 4k [Music] yeah so that's still stirring quite a lot let's try 1440 hmm i'll be honest this is not promising so far so checking on satellite map we don't exactly have many satellites over us right now one good thing about being this far up in latitude is that they are more condensed than if you're on the equator for example there's far more satellites around but we're not getting that good speed so let's go into speed test and try it on here oh now that's a little bit better i have not seen those speeds before wow wow upload 25 megabits that is nuts okay i'll take back what i was saying before i've got to do that again i can't just rely on one test let's see whoa what that is absurd so yeah i think earlier it was still just swollen itself out a bit um this is nuts there's over 30 upload then so yeah that's not bad at all so yeah that's not too shabby at all um yeah that's that's quite impressive obviously this is still not ideal placement for the dish i can't really leave it there where it is in the middle of the lawn so i'm gonna have to try and figure something out with that but still i never expected to see speeds like that in a place like this so that's a big big leap forward so what i think we're going to do is i'm going to test it out in a few different locations over the next few days see what sort of speeds and what sort of reliability i'm getting in those different locations and try to settle on somewhere to put it permanently i do apologize if you can hear the birds outside my window is still cracked open to get the cable in okay so it is now saturday the 24th of april i've had starlink up and running for five six days now and honestly i could not be happier i've had very little downtime i did wake up this morning with a message in the starlink app saying there's intermittent service but really it's not been bad at all let's go into speed test right now so yeah i mean it's still rocketing up towards the 200 mark so i cannot complain at all for that so far it's been very reliable the one downside i've found so far is the router itself at the moment it's on that windowsill down there and looking out that way we've got the house so front door and then my bedroom is there i've just about been able to reach it with my pc in my bedroom but if i'm a bit further back in bed on my phone i'm not quite getting it i'm just out of range of the router so i'll be looking at a solution for that whether it's wi-fi extenders or replacing the router entirely we'll see in terms of the dish placement at the moment it is still on the lawn i did get up on the ladder yesterday up on the roof of the garage just with the basic tripod sitting there to see if it worked if that would be a good location to keep it and it looks very promising the one issue with this garage is it's brand new and ideally we don't want to be putting holes in the roof so what i've actually put forward to my dad is the ridgeline roof mount which you can actually still get hold of you can't see it on the starlink store anymore they're just selling the volcano mount and the pipe adapter but if you go into the starlink app and into the support area under install you can find how to actually try and get hold of the original amount so that is my thinking and then i can get a couple of cinder blocks for about one or two pound each set those on top of it and we should be laughing i have completely got rid of my 4g lte setup the big white antenna that's what i had up on the guttering at the back of the garage and then i had that rigged through a existing hole in the breeze block foundation of the garage which is where the main power supply comes into the garage unfortunately because the ferrets on the peri ethnic cable from the dish is this big it's about three quarter inch in size i cannot fit that through the existing hole so i think between the two options of widening that existing hole or just putting another fresh hole just for that one we're probably looking at doing another fresh hole so that's another job and then that's coming into the garage you can come straight under my door plug it straight in in terms of the design of the thin i'm very happy with it i'm very glad that they include that 100 foot cable to the dish that's very handy meaning if you needed to if your house was surrounded by trees but there was a clearing 60 centi foot away you can just walk over there and still plug it in to the power supply in terms of my use case i am a photographer and videographer and this week i've been uploading a load of client photo edits that's usually between 100 and 200 images high resolution images they've been flying out the door over onto dropbox i've been uploading draft video edits for clients as well i've been putting up 1080p videos in a matter of two or three minutes and i've also been gaming and live streaming all sorts of stuff in terms of gaming latency isn't amazing if you were a pro gamer ninja or something then this probably isn't the setup for you at least not yet but i can quite happily spend a couple of hours on rocket league or something like that and i might only get two maybe three very brief instances of tremendously bad lag but other than that it's been absolutely fine and then just last night i was on a discord channel streaming other people's feeds as well as streaming my own feed playing geo gesso and this evening i'm pretty sure i've got a zoom call at some point as well with quite a few people and i can see it going very well so yeah so far after almost a week of use i am overjoyed with starlink i never thought i'd be able to see speeds like this in a place like this i live right out in the sticks i'm in the middle of valley sort of stuck between bigger towns my village consists of farms a church and a couple of houses so really bt open reach and anyone else they've not exactly been prioritizing this area i've lived here for three and a half years now and since day one i've been checking the bt broadband availability checker and it's never gone above a one meg download guarantee and since that first day they've always said fiber is coming soon to your area it's not so yeah there we go very happy with my first week of styling use and really it's only going to get better as i send more satellites up into the sky and they get more ground stations set up down on earth and in theory it may well get cheaper as well it is expensive to start with but i'm trying to run the business here it is a business expense it's a service that i very much need and rely on so i'm very happy that i have this option now for now i do still have my 4g router i haven't yet cancelled the data sim just in case you never know but by the time the contract runs out in september i am very hopeful that i will not need it anymore at all i'll be doing more videos in the future as and when i start installing the roof mounts and drilling through walls and trying to connect the house up with the router and stuff so keep your eyes peeled for that otherwise thank you very
