you understand this complicated thing that's why I wanted you Jack we've opened the doorway to a world we know nothing about when is the academic community going to accept the fact the Pharaohs of the Fourth Dynasty did not build the Great Pyramid look look inside the pyramid the most incredible structure ever erected there are no writings whatsoever well who do you think built the pyramids I don't have any idea who built in that mental Atlantis a secular or Martians perhaps [Music] exactly but yet someone want to speak with you what what is this all about job what kind of a job where'd you find us he's a plateau 1928 I thought I've never seen anything like this you're havin no one now there's there's two lines of hieroglyphs it's got writing unlike we've ever found before well we should read million years of the skies or awesome God sealed and very for all time roof door heaven is Sergey well so why is the military so I just said 5,000 year old Egyptians happens my report says 10,000 flying here why did they bring you in this country I'm here in case [Music] [Music] this is the information the probes sent back to us you can clearly see the gate on the other side both gigs must have functioned as a doorway between our wards being locked itself on to the point somewhere in in the caelian galaxy on the other side of the known universe [Music] your job here is to realign the stock can you do that or not [Music] my orders were simple track down times of any possible danger if I found any Globalstar right here and shoot anything that comes down that round Oh [Applause] [Music] on the 28th of October 1994 Sol gate arrived on the big screen in the USA and later in the UK on the 6th of January in 1995 produced for 55 million dollars and directed by German director Roland Emmerich who a great successful Universal Soldier in 1992 Stargate became a sleeper hit that year and went on to earn 196 million dollars worldwide and a further 34 million dollars when it hit the home rental market the usual bevy of tie-ins popped up such as video games which will be discussed later and action figures produced by Hasbro as you can see from the commercial that took a few liberties with the designs with Jackson looking totally different and looking more like Terry Bogard from fatal fury the film received mixed reviews at the time however sci-fi fans enjoyed its premise and action many could accept it was an average popcorn blockbuster Roger Ebert made it publicly clear that he hated the movie and gave it the thumbs down in 1996 they released the special edition or save director's cut of Stargate on laser disc and VHS featuring roughly 10 minutes of additional footage we have an extended intro of raw arriving on earth and the rest of the new cut mostly consisted of extra lines of dialogue it wasn't a radically different version but is now the most common cut to get hold of on DVD and blu-ray you can often tell what's been extended with a slight change in color timing of the picture despite the mixed reception it gained a strong fan base but once the TV series came out the Stargate franchise sky rocketed into popularity and the show really overshadowed the film the idea for Stargate started in the early eighties when Roland Emmerich was at film school he came up with the idea that a spaceship was buried under the Great Pyramid and called the story necro pole Roland was fully aware that this couldn't be made at the time and would require a huge budget to realize his idea once he met writer and producer Dean Devlin in the late 80s who was a huge fan of science fiction he loved the idea and further developed it with Roland Dean always wanted to do a Lawrence of Arabia style movie but in outer space wasn't until the early 90s of the script was retitled Stargate after Roland had success with Universal Soldier this gave him some clout to sell the idea of this new sci-fi action adventure and studio canal was approached with the script after many other studios had turned it down feeling sci-fi was no longer popular Studio canal said they could only offer 25 million dollars towards its budget which Roland and Dean thought was doable but quickly into pre-production they realized it would cost more in the region of 52 million dollars at that point they had no disagree - for the United States thankfully MGM came to the rescue with the extra funding to gain the distribution rights to the USA now there has been legal issues surrounding the creation of the script - Stargate in 1995 omar zhudi a high school teacher filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Studio canal MGM Roland and Dean claiming virtually the entire film was stolen from a manuscript he submitted to 20th Century Fox in 1984 but it was rejected by the studio at the time this was long before Roland and Dean ever met however the lawsuit alleges that Studio canal eventually acquired a copy of the manuscript and later hide Emmerich and Devlin to make Stargate using Omar's ideas Omar wanted 114 million dollars rewarded to him in damages which was the net profit for the film in 1997 the case was settled out of court for $50,000 far less than what he wanted in 2013 Omar did get a chance to publish his novel called Egypt's Cape based on the manuscript he says he submitted to Fox which you can easily find on Amazon I've not read the book personally but there are a bunch of reviews online and you can draw your own conclusions to the similarities between Omar's work and the final script to Stargate the Stargate was the first design the production team tackled originally it took on a more of a triangular design but was later changed to a circular shape as a story detailed the idea of the Stargate needing a dialing process to travel from one side of the galaxy to another the gate originally took on a black color design but ended up looking like a giant tire so the change to a more silver metallic design gave it an improved look Roland and Dean stride for accuracy in the film's design and hired Egyptologist Stuart Smith to make all the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and spoken language as accurate as possible they interpreted what they thought ancient Egyptian would sound like the actors struggled with the lines especially Jay Davidson he originally had an earpiece through which the lines were fed to him and he would repeat what he heard this proved problematic however so cue cards were introduced to make it easier for him the film was shot in Arizona in July to avoid the crowded dune buggy season so shooting during the blazing summer heat with temperatures hitting over 120 degrees in the shade made many crew members pass out due to heat exhaustion and made it difficult for many of them to work in these conditions the entrance to the pyramid was a seven story tall set as it was being built they had to stop working on it by 11 a.m. because the scaffolding became hot to the touch so the evenings and the early hours of the day they could only work on it to hide all the footprints after each shot they hired a team of 30 to sweep away all the footprints and anything left in shot was painted out in post-production they employed 120 extras for the final battle to really give the movie at scope but sometimes not all the extras would turn up the following day due to the heat and having to stand around waiting for the next take so they thought about replacing men with miniatures for the long shot but that didn't work out but thankfully they got all the shots needed and didn't have to resort to visual effects to complete the final battle for ours epic throne room they couldn't find a large enough soundstage so they ended up converting the Spruce Goose hangar to take full advantage of the width and height to fully realize the interior of the pyramid for the cast of Stargate we have one of my favorite actors Kurt Russell plain Colonel Jack O'Neill a US Air Force Special Operations airman who at the opening of the movie is suffering from suicidal depression after his son accidentally shot himself with O'Neill's own pistol due to his experience in the force he had brought back in to lead the team into the Stargate it is a bit silly the army now throw him back into duty where he is clearly mentally unstable Kurt apparently turned down the role several times before accepting it Dean and Roland desperately wanted him involved and coat was finally persuaded James Spader plays dr. Daniel Jackson an archaeologist and linguist who struggled to be taken seriously by the academic world on his theory that the Great Pyramid of Giza was not built by the Pharaohs of the 4th of dynasty Spada found the script to be awful and apparently took on the role for the money but also was brought on by Roland's enthusiasm Dean Devlin said in an interview for the blu-ray that Spada was a bit embarrassed to be in a sci-fi film and was also challenging to work with asking many questions about character motivations and questioning many of Roland's directions Jay Davidson plays rather powerful alien who takes on a human form to sustain his dying body producer Mario Kassar of Kuroko put forward J for the role of Ray J at this point was losing interest in being a film star and was struggling with the attention he was getting after being nominated for Academy Award pre supporting role in The Crying Game after Stargate he unfortunately left the film industry the vehicle in Fez plays dr. Catherine Langford who hires Jackson to translate the ancient text she was present when her father discovered a Stargate and the cover stones in 1928 Stargate would be one of the last films she starred in she passed away in 1995 Milla vigil plays Cherie the daughter of kusu-kusu offers Cherie to Daniel Jackson in marriage as a gift and she helps Daniel with his investigation about their history Millie was the last actor to be cast in the film Alexis Cruz played scarer the son of casue and the brother of Cherie skaara and his friends aide O'Neal and his men to fight rah Alexis would return to the Stargate franchise in this star sg-1 TV show erica vari plays casued the leader of the tribes people and the father of jewelry and scarer Erik would also return in a tv-series we also have French Stewart I believe in his first film role playing lieutenant Ferretti French went on to have great success in the hit TV show third Rock from the Sun also we have German Honsou in one of his early roles playing was top guard Horace as the movie starts in the director's cut we see the alien spaceship arrive on earth in 8000 BC and a beam of light takes over a young lad and the alien uses him as a host to rule the world and live forever it jumps in 1928 during the decade when many archaeologists were discovering the hidden secrets of Egypt they find and unearth cover stones that predate Egyptian history and appear very alien then we are thrown forward to present time where Egypt told gist and linguist Daniel Jackson is giving a speech about his findings about Egyptian history and his laughed at by his peers for his wild claims he is observed by Kathleen Langford whose father discovered the ancient cover stones in 1928 and invites him to a US Air Force installation she wants him to translate the Egyptian hieroglyphs on the cover stones Jackson determines that the hieroglyphs referred to a Stargate on this revelation Jackson is shown that the base actually has this Stargate also discovered by Lankford's father they use Jackson's coordinates to align the stargates metal wings with the markings and once all seven are locked in it opens up a wormhole creating a doorway to a distant planet Jackson joins O'Neill and his team O'Neill has been invited to lead the mission and decide if there's any threat on the other side they passed through the wormhole have arrived and find themselves in a pyramid like structure once they exit the structure they find a desert-like planet with three moons Jackson locates the Stargate and it's controls that it lacks a coordinates to return home O'Neill frustrated with Jackson orders some men to stay behind to guard the Stargate and the rest head out to find a way to realign the Stargate they stumble across a tribe of humans who work for their God and wrath they mine a we're mineral which is only available on this planet Jackson discovered the tribe speaking ancient variation of Egyptian and the tribe believed Jackson and his men to be representatives of rah the chieftain casue presents his daughter to Jackson as a gift he initially refuses but begins to warm to her and romantic feelings begin to build between them only Oprah friends a teenage boys Gaara and his friends do to sky row reminding him of his long deceased son after doing a bit of research Jackson discovers that hua is an alien being who had come to earth during the ancient Egyptian period looking to possess human bodies to extend his own life rahrr enslaved these humans and brought some to this planet through the Stargate to mind the mineral that is used to keep him alive and power his technology the humans on earth got sick of raw and revolted and very to Stargate to prevent its use Ralph on then on forbid the humans from becoming literate fearing that they will turn against him again Jackson further discovers a cartouche containing six of the seven symbols for the Stargate but the seventh has been broken off so they need to find the final symbol to get home and have to approach the entrance to the pyramid where R has returned a Stargate came out at a time when CGI was still being used in minimal amount and most visual effects throughout stargates still incorporated a wealth of practical effects we see a great use of miniatures and pyrotechnics the long shots of the town were achieved in miniature form the aliens pyramid ship was originally going to be all done in miniature form bad had to be a mix of CGI especially when it opens and takes off into space but the interiors as you see the pyramid open up were done in miniatures it's an incredible shot and looks huge in its scale roland wanted the gliders to look like blocky locomotives because he liked the contradiction to real vehicles that could actually fly they did tests but they didn't work so by chance Roz belt-buckle took on the design of the gliders the shots were achieved in miniature form and they even built larger scale ones to fly past the camera to interact with the actors if you look closely you can see the wires holding them up this was the first time Roland worked with Patrick Tatopoulos Roland saw some of Patrick's concept work for Bram Stoker's Dracula and was so impressed with his designed he invited him onto Star Gate which needed a concept artist and Patrick jumped on board Patrick took on more designs and he was originally hired to do and worked for little money for the creature they encountered they used a Clydesdale horse that was covered with the prosthetic and for the long shots they used a little dog very clever technique that you wouldn't know when watching back the footage Patrick also took on the challenge of designing the costumes and head pieces for the warrior guards Anubis and Horus and even Ross headdress roland was very open-minded and let Patrick push his creativity the main head pieces for the guards were animatronics that had a decent level of articulation and gave them this godlike imposing presence I think most people when they remember the film they think of the CGI moments when the masks transform and reveal the faces underneath at the time this blew me away it was the next step from what we saw previously with the morphing software that turned up in the movie willow today they look a bit off with a framerate and the blending isn't entirely perfect but it's a cool effect nonetheless when the Stargate opens you have this explosion of this water like substance to create this push of liquid they use an air cannon to achieve this effect when it bounces back as it begins to slow down it was a simple technique of stirring water which they called these strudel effect when it came time to pass through the gate the actors would dip their face in water the FX team would wave away all the air bubbles then on cue the actor pulls their head out and they played it backwards to get the desired effect early screen tests of the film did prove disappointing and drove the effects team and director to make some changes to address the complaints they added a glowing effect to Roz eyes to further push that he was an alien and originally you never saw the death of rah and the reveal of his true form and the bomb goes off they included a shot of the alien reacting and then cutting to him being hit with the explosion and disintegrating in slow motion for being 23 years old the visual effects have stood up well over time the miniatures are definitely a highlight for me it doesn't go too far with CGI and uses it wisely you do get the odd drop in resolution as you see a computer-generated effect appear which was an inherent problem in the effects at the time also during the final shot of the pyramid exploding I always thought that the plate of the planet and the background looked a bit unfinished but aside from that the visual effects team did a wonderful job you David Arnold composer score to Stargate this was David's second score for a feature film he first stepped into the motion picture arena for his good friend Danny cannon and his 1993 low-budget movie the young Americans David at the time of production had recently started working a local video store some trivia suggests a record store in London to keep the money rolling in and once hired he spent several months in a hotel room working on the soundtrack to avoid any distractions according to Arnold when he first read the script for Stargate he knew what approach to take which was to be as big and bold as possible giving the score a sense of majesty and wonder the score is definitely one of the standout pieces of the film it's full-on bombastic and rich release melodies and themes it's like hearing John Williams style of music from the late 70s and early 80s there was a mix of Indiana Jones and Close Encounters to it but also the music evokes the wonderful imagery of loss of Arabia and the usual epic set in the desert the school is a wonderful piece of music and must have gained David Arnold millions of fans overnight once he got onto the James Bond series he really became a big name in the industry David after Stargate worked with Roland again on Independence Day and Godzilla there are some cues that sound very familiar when you compare Stargate to Independence Day there is a familiar style going on the soundtrack is a great listen and perfect have on in the background as you work or study David's music is always a joy to listen to and it's strange he hasn't done many big movies as of recently and focused on TV shows such as Sherlock I'm still surprised no one has dragged him into the superhero genre I guarantee that he would produce a great Superman score a soundtrack arrived on CD in late 1994 by Milan records featuring over an hour of music they even released a main theme as a single the original 1994 soundtrack is easy to track down on a secondhand market but it is a bit pricey in 2006 there was a deluxe release that was remastered and featured an X of 10 minutes of music the CD release is sadly out of print but it did make this edition available on iTunes for a very affordable price Stargate received a video game that was ported to the Super Nintendo the Megadrive Game Boy and Game Gear first up we have the handheld ports which aren't what you might expect usually what you get as a platformer which we'll see with the 16-bit console versions a Game Boy in Game Gear received an odd puzzle game it's a bit like columns but in a 3d perspective as you look down at the Egyptian symbols as you have to match them up I'm not entirely sure why they chose this direction but due to do successful Tetris I'm guessing the programmers thought a puzzle like game was best suited for handheld devices for the 16-bit consoles we got your basic run-of-the-mill platformer which has you control O'Neill as you make your way across the desert to battle rarrr you gain a bunch of weapons to take on the guards and random insects that quickly become an annoyance as you make your way through it it appears to have the same game engine as demolition man have arrived the year before the Mega Drive and Super Nintendo versions are pretty much identical with only the Super Nintendo version including an extra level as you control one of the gliders which doesn't happen in the film it uses the traditional mode 7 effect which the Mega Drive struggle could do if it was ported to the mega CD then this effect would have been easily achieved the game was pretty much panned on release the graphics were given favorable reviews but the controls were criticized for being sluggish which really hindered the gameplay also it didn't offer anything new than just being another movie licensed platformer I've attempted to play a few times and like the critics at the time found the controls a pain in the ass and gave up on it pretty quickly roland emmerich and Dean Devlin had sold off their rights to Stargate to MGM in the mid-90s wanting to pursue other projects such as Independence Day and GM had wanted them involved in their new plan TV series but they were both unavailable so the studio went ahead anyway with a spin-off show to the movie that takes up a year after the film's event stargate sg1 premiered in 1997 and was for the most part we've seemed well and lasted ten seasons totaling 214 episodes and had a spin-off show called Atlantis which lasted five seasons and even released direct-to-dvd movies based on the series now that is a lot of Stargate which I'm afraid to say I've never seen an episode well only a few for this review it brings back Daniel Jackson who was played by James Spader in the movie and in the show by Michael Shanks Richard Dean Anderson the star the old TV show MacGyver plays Kurt Russell's character O'Neal the show continues the use of the Stargate and travelling to other worlds and it changes a lot of the mythology of the original film with only seeing a few episodes I can't give a full and fair critique and it would be unfair of me to do so with over 200 episodes produced don't expect me to review this show in the future but what I've seen the production values are very good and so other visual effects for a TV production it brings over the classic theme from the film and has Jerry Goldsmith's son Joel take over composing duties it's got a very strong rating on IMDB at eight point four out of ten so suppose it's worth watching if you haven't seen it before like me there are I'm sure plenty of other reviews out there on the show that would explore many of the episodes and which ones to watch as I mentioned at the beginning of the review the popularity of Stargate has really been thanks to the TV series if they never did a spin-off show I think the movie and its legacy would have been forgotten about and it would have been this throwaway action sci-fi film from the mid-90s and that would have been it if there wasn't a show it would be me now saying look at this hidden gem from the mid-90s we all forgot about there has been talk of a sequel to Stargate for a number of years due to the success of the TV show and MGM have wanted to get Dean Devlin and roland emmerich back in the creative process and direction Roland and Dean were apparently never a fan of the TV series but were happy with it success and their intention for the seeker was to have it set 12 years later and would reunite Spader and Russell but the goal now is to reboot the series and produce a trilogy but with the sequel to Independence Day being a box-office bomb and getting slammed by the critics the third in that series is seeming less likely to happen goodness effect the plan to reboot Stargate time will tell but I don't see anything happening for the next few years Stargate was never a movie I saw in the cinema which was odd because I was of an age to go to the cinema with my friends and didn't need to drag my parents along I saw a bunch of movies back in early 1995 when the film hit in the UK I Stargate just seem to pass me by until I went on VHS as a young teen I found the film to be enjoyable and like the mix of aliens and Egyptian history it was an interesting aspect to the movies premise but the film never really stuck with me and I didn't often revisit it over the years and got it quite late into its release on DVD Roland Emmerich's real success came with Independence Day which was one of the most popular films of 1996 and when you put Stargate an ID for next to each other there is a lot of comparisons they both exhibit very similar characters and plot structures a Stargate and it's script feel like the general building blocks to what we got with Independence Day I D fall however felt like a more refined attempt at a big blockbuster over the years I had started to notice Stargate was getting better reviews its reviews at the time weren't certainly favorable but as kids and teenagers have grown up on it they still to this day as adults enjoy the movie it still seems to have a fan base thanks largely to the TV show which is kept an interesting franchise since upgrading my old Krusty DVD copy to a blu-ray I've gone back to it a couple of times and I don't think my appreciation of the film has increased or even decreased I'm still very much of the mindset and it's an average film but does its job at entertaining me despite a number of problems with it which I will discuss shortly the pros of Stargate is firstly David Arnold score which I discussed in the soundtrack segment of this review it's full of charm and character and gives off the vibes of classic John Williams and traditional big orchestral scores of the 1980s the effects are generally very good and the CGI is a bit dated somewhat but is not off-putting the most obvious and interesting aspect of the movie is the alien who influenced our civilization and the mix of his architecture into Egyptian culture even though I don't think the pyramid design seems a reflection of alien technology and the general look of say rah interior spaceship don't seem to jail for me despite it being a great design it seems that the alien is more of an impostor that has taken on the image of Wrath to manipulate the people to do his bidding and to keep himself alive but the film clearly pushes the ideas that's not the case and he has influenced our history which always puts me at odds with it I like the alien twist - at all but because we've seen so many films featuring aliens and their spaceships and Technology they seem to mix quite seamlessly whereas Stargate I don't fully buy the connection but to give it credit at least it's doing something different I think if there was more of a backstory to the alien or just seeing him explain more of what he really wants and his main goal instead of just wanting to live longer could have strengthened the premise that he had played a bigger part in our world rah doesn't really do much in a film when it's pretty sloppy with dealing with Jackson and O'Neill he doesn't really see them as a threat and just casually strolls around his blaze barking out comments on how important he is and once he tribesman begin to attack he wants to escape pretty quickly I just think there could have been more of a conflict between humans and rah he could have pushed his influence to change the minds of the tribesmen to attack O'Neill and his men Peck even influenced Jackson while could have had the great skill of manipulation to bend these newcomers to his will I love the moments however when Ross speaks there was this great alteration to his voice to make it sound unearthly and something that can't naturally come out of a human unfortunately one doesn't turn up on screen till one hour and twenty minutes into the film he is the main villain which further pushes the idea that he feels a bit underdeveloped like the main backstory to this film there's so much more they could have done with the alien the military and my soldiers are portrayed at first as aggressive stupid and just overall unlikable a possible comment by Roland being German on Americans and how we see some but it's not done in a satirical way as they Paul Verhoeven did with Robocop the soldiers do become more likable as they rolled into the third act and O'Neill who is very much a man of few words begins to break out of his shell of depression and the hero that he's supposed to be but it's so stupid they go to this alien planet and just want to blow stuff up and shoot things there is no attempt to study the area or take samples I do feel it's sloppy writing ignoring the attempts to communicate or to learn as a main goal it makes the Earthlings or say visitors seen as bad guys or bully-ish very much like rah also there are moments when they decide not to show subtitles so it's difficult to know what they are saying especially near the end when they are chanting their victory I'll try and guess the film I believe starts out well and sets up the characters an ting spider investigating ancient texts and trying to decipher it all is interesting I think with many Roland Emmerich's disaster flicks the first act is always quite exciting as the build-up to the inevitable but then of course it descends into ethics overload and you get bombarded with cheap gags and two-dimensional stock characters which some people aren't bothered by and don't go into these movies looking for deep characters and story arcs they just want to be entertained by the vast destruction we see what I think Stargate had great potential to give us more there is so much more to explore and expand upon I think if the research and strive to educate and develop D printing alien history came first and the action eccentric direction came second and I think it would have in my eyes be seen as something more special granted there are only a couple of action scenes in it but with those big gaps there isn't really much going on there are dumps of exposition to educate us on the basics of the mythology of the alien and his influence but if the middle act is where it sags for me with O'Neill being a man of few words and quite frankly he's a very dry and dull character Kurt is best when he's playing an egotist or loudmouth such as his roles in big trouble and tangoing cash so we are left with Jackson to really hold the film and deliver most of the dialogue Spader does do a great job but we are left with him just making discoveries and trying his best to communicate with the locals they needed to be more interaction between Jackson and O'Neill but sadly there is any chemistry making their screen time together a bit forgettable the love interest of cherie and jackson is totally shoehorned in it's just so lazily implemented it's your generic stock romantic storyline we've seen so many times before and he decides to stay there after a few days and is now apparently in love with her this only happens in the movies folks this review may sound like a list of negatives but it's a movie that I still has many problems that we've seen time and time again in Roland's subsequent movies there is great potential there to take full advantage of this alien influence that created our civilization no matter how silly and bonkers it may sound on a technical level and in terms of design I think the movie really excels the look of rawr and the interior of his spaceship is extremely detailed and looks grand I love the look of the movie and just the whole visual aesthetic the production values are there on screen and there's a lot of talented people bringing this movie to life this film is not awful or unwatchable it says an average sci-fi movie that is hindered by a largely unremarkable screenplay I for one would happily see a remake if it's done right and gives us a strong back story and characters that are interesting and compelling Stargate for what it is is a fun adventure movie that isn't demanding or difficult to watch it just misses the mark on a number of things there are fans out there I'm sure who loved it for what it is it's an important film of their childhood or even some who saw it as an adult back in 1994 and it made an impact on them which is great but for me it just never really stuck with me over the years I hope I raised a number of points to clarify that but I hope there is something planned for the future to expand Stargate on a cinematic level because it still has a lot of potential I mean look at this it says a traveler from distant stars escaped from a dying world looking for a way to extend his own life his body decaying and weak he couldn't prevent his own demise apparently his whole species was becoming extinct so he searched the galaxies looking forthe cheat death he came to a world rich with life where he encountered a primitive race humans a species which with all his powers and knowledge he could maintain indefinitely he realized within a human body he had a chance for a new life now he apparently found a young boy raw chicken and possessed his body like some kind of parasite looking for a host and inhabiting who informed he appointed himself ruler I'm still case you born Yaya Hawaiian Yeti Ackerson throat heart so cute fahncy dahnce young catbug yo our time apart geez all right suit initial collection [Music] [Music] well your
