hey it's me Anan today I wanted to show you how to create a Starbound Journal you can do this technique for hard cover journals and books where you're using bookboard or mat board with the colored paper of your choice like this one or this one [Music] or you can skip the hardbound part and laminate some card stock onto fancy paper and secure it together with stars sewn in if this all sounds a bit too complex to take on why not try a small book with just one [Music] star I've been making and working with black paper Journal for a few years because I like to light up each page with white ink I got the idea when I discovered Black papered Books of ours like this collection from the Morgan library but this isn't the only book of hours done in black paper that I've seen just Google Black Books of hours and feast your eyes you'll come up with some incredible examples I started doodling on black paper journals first with colored pencils and then with white gel [Music] pens here's a current Journal done with white gel pens and photos from my Canon Ivy [Music] printer the first thing you'll need is a template for the Stars I'm going to show you how to make a journal sewn with three stars you can certainly use this technique for hardbound booklets and such but you'll need to cut up a lot of things for something like that [Music] today I'll just laminate some black card stock to fancy paper to create soft outer covers for some black printing paper [Music] Interiors I have some cool antique tarot decorative paper for the [Music] covers I'm going to do the star binding with red 1/8 in ribbon you can use 1/6 in Ribbon or even 1/4 in ribbon but do realize that the holes you need to punch in all this paper will have to accommodate ribbon passing through it several times so they need to be fairly big and of course you can sew it all together with bookbinder's wax thread but I think this stuff just looks butt ugly if you find some silver cording you could use [Music] that one thing you must have is a large needle with a big enough eye to pass the ribbon through also note that the ribbon or thread will pass through most of the holes several times so remember to punch holes big enough for [Music] that I've put a link to this template in the description along with links to other supplies and tools print the template at 100% with regular printing paper if your creating a book up to 8 1/2 by 11 in for gluing things you can use craft Bond spray to Linate papers together or get all archival and use the professional [Music] stuff or even make do with Elmer if that's all you have needs [Music] must you'll need a metal ruler if you're measuring and cutting paper [Music] and I like using this see-through Quilters ruler so I can see what I'm [Music] doing I went ahead and created a template out of map board to make it easier to punch holes you will need a hole punch because there are a lot of holes to punch you can use a crocodile if you have one because they have a deep enough bite to accommodate the whole holes but I found the cropadile wasn't accurate for exact placement of the holes and the only way I could get it close enough was to open the reservoir for the punched holes and try to site exactly where to punch the holes on the [Music] marks yeah that yeah okay yeah well h [Music] it's still a really cool [Music] tool my journal will be 5 in to 7 in so I'm cutting card stock to that [Music] size here I'm cutting down the fancy tarot paper to closer to that size just for ease of use I'm gluing the card stock to The Backs side of the tarot paper so I just have to line it up on one [Music] side there's no need to leave margins for folding the tarot paper over the card stock like uh with hardbound covers [Music] make sure to smooth out the paper while it's still drying so that there aren't any air pockets [Music] anywhere by the way I got this tarot paper from hollanders it's a mom and pop art paper supplier in Michigan with a fantastic selection of decorative papers Italian and otherwise do be sure to check them out [Music] [Music] you might like me need to do a little trimming on the edges to get everything just [Music] [Music] right when you place a template over the cover paper make sure the paper is in the correct direction or eventually you'll have an upside down book The Stars point is at the very edge of the cover I flip the cover over to its inside because it's easier to make the marks that I need to make with a white gel pen [Music] [Music] [Music] if you decide to use a leather punch they usually come with several different sizes of punches I always use the biggest one and you'll notice what my hands shake a bit when I'm punching holes because I don't have a lot of strength in my hands that might not be a problem for you [Music] once the outer covers are done remember you have to punch the same pattern of holes in the inner papers oh dear God so much punching now I want to show you the order in which you sew each star in place you'll go from one to 2 2 to 3 3 to 4 4 to 5 and then back to one [Music] starting at one I'm going to leave myself a tail of ribbon maybe 4 in long and I'm going to tape it down to get it out of the [Music] [Music] way so starting from one we need to side step to the edge and enclose it [Music] now I go from one to [Music] two and go to three from the back again we're at an edge so we need to enclose it [Music] okay now we've captured both of [Music] those now we go in through four I know there's a lot of ribbon to deal with in the beginning from four wrap around the lower Edge which is five and then go back to one and then from one go to [Music] two and from there go to [Music] three 3 to four and then four to five turn it over and find the missing side to complete the [Music] Stitch okay so that's the first one done we'll arrange it a little to make sure the ribbon's tight [Music] from the first hole we want to sew our way over to the start of the next star so go through four and come out of one in in the Middle [Music] star now we're going to start over again we go from one to two two to [Music] three for three go to [Music] four wrap the ribbon around the lower Edge which is five and then go back into one [Music] and then we go to two 2 to 3 3 to 4 but from the back [Music] side wrap it around the lower Edge which is five flip it over and sew into one great now we're going to sew from 1 to four and then to the next [Music] [Music] one now we go into two but remember we need to enclose that edge [Music] [Music] wrap it around the edge sew into three from the back side [Music] we go three to four but remember you have to wrap the ribbon around the edge at four okay four to five at the bottom wrap it around back up to one [Music] and then we go in through the back to two Okay in the front to three in the back to four four to five at the bottom wrap it around flip it over go back into [Music] one now we've sewn the whole thing but I want to get this Top Line sewn across completely so we're going to back stitch a little bit so we're going to go from 1 to four go back through one and go to the Middle stars four and then go through the Middle stars [Music] one and go to the first Stars four [Music] before that you tie this off on the front side adjust the Stars to be a little bit more evenly spaced in symmetrical make sure everything is nice and tight then flip it over and remove the [Music] [Music] tape so what I do is tie the two ends of the ribbon together in a square knot close to one of the holes make sure it's as tight as you can get it but not too tight cuz you don't want to tear the paper you know you don't have to make a square knot I mean you could use a surgeon's knot you know whatever works for you but you can bury that knot in one of the holes [Music] okay so once you've secured that you can cut off the excess ribbon and this is how it should [Music] look so as you know I did that tarot paper journal with red ribbon and honestly it was really finicky because I had to keep un twisting the ribbon to get it to lie flat on each pass and this ribbon just loves to get all [Music] twisty you'll notice there's a big binding clip with a bit of felt sandwiched between it and the paper to hold the journal together and avoid making it dent in the paper [Music] all in all I do think using ribbon was the right choice even though it was a little hard to work with but I really do like how it looks [Music] this is going to be a present for a friend who lives way too far away I'll include a white gel pen so her words will light up these dark Pages Fiat looks [Music]
