hi everyone and welcome back if you're new here I'm Diane and uh this is where we come to have fun and paint something unexpected usually like today because today I as usual as often is the case I didn't know really quite where to start so I've been doing a little bit of um research and uh playing around and time is ticking ticking ticking uh so what I have done I did a little bit of a warm-up now this is not going to be the painting that I'm going to do um I thought I was going to paint some houses because I thought that would be quite fun and indeed it might be um and so I played around here with my gouache set no no no no no no it's not gouache it's the um kiraki uh art Novo set which is a little bit like gach in as much as it's somewhere halfway between I think um the texture of waterc color and gouache which is quite chalky this doesn't really come out chalky but it does have a little bit of opacity which is nice anyway so I played around with that and I call that a warm up so going to put that to one side now and I'm going to continue oh and I've got my ink tense pencils here my derent my little set not a big set it's just a little set of 12 I think um different colors and I might use those for a little bit of um detail at the end cuz I'm going to do a floral there are reasons why I'm going to do a floral but I won't go into that now um excuse me this is a piece of um paper this is a block of paper this is Meen this is hot press and this one is 12 by 9 in but obviously it doesn't matter what size you use um any size will do I'm just going to uh get a knife here because I've just noticed that um when when you use this paper you're using a um I hope this is going to work uh a block because the paper is glued down all the way around but when you've removed your sheets a few times sometimes you get a kind of edge uh that you you don't really want that to stay there cuz it might interfere with pointing Pro Painting process so so um I just wanted to cut that off that's where it's meant to work like that there we are and there's a bit more here so yeah if that builds up when you tear off your pages sometimes that will happen and it'll build up to quite a large extent and you don't want that so that's a bit fiddly but you know whatever let's get rid of that and so now we're more or less ready that doesn't matter it's not quite perfect but that's fine so we'll put that so there you can see it um the I've got the art noo set here I've also got underneath it my regular big set 48 colors I know lots of you have got these paints now and they are nice to use and I'm going to paint a more or less um I can't make up my mind I think I I don't know whether to do a background or not [Music] um I don't think I will I think I'll just go onto the white today and and I'm just going to use the colors I'm not going to work with a limited palette I'm going to work with um as whatever comes to mind but I'm going to be thinking pink think pink okay so we'll just start off uh and start painting flowers and I'm going start with some relatively small ones um oh I should have I did actually spray all of these but I don't know that I sprayed them enough might have missed some of them so I'll spray them again just to make sure a little spray if you haven't got one of these spray bottles you can get them from Amazon and they're really a good idea and yeah I quite like to do wet in wet um and I quite like to keep things simple sometimes you do want to think about what you do and question whether or not that's the right thing to be doing I don't want to use this brush actually sometimes that's my favorite sometimes it isn't and I'm just going to swap to a slightly smaller this is craft mod one I think it's a little bit more uh a little bit stiffer perhaps okay and uh yeah it does it does make a difference the brush you have you will paint differently depending on what brush you have in your hand and uh yeah so we have to remember don't we that we're doing this for our Mental Health health and for our pleasure and enjoyment and no other reason nothing else matters so we can give ourselves the time that we need to do this there's no need to rush and we not not trying to achieve anything particular we're just playing with color and enjoying the process if you're like me um I'm one of those people who doesn't have a very good um imaginative brain my and I don't mean to say I can't imagine things cuz I can if I'm allowed to use words but um we've talked about this before I think this a Fantasia or whatever it's called Uh problem that has been recently identified that there are a relatively small proportion of the population who have problems um visualizing things in their heads so for example if someone said to me uh visualize um your mother's face I I actually can't do that if someone said to me visualize the Eiffel Tower um I can I can get a vague idea I can get an idea of a pointy thing but I can't actually see it some people apparently can really see detail when they are asked to imagine things and this is a bit of a problem when you're an artist and what I'm leading up to saying is that if if you're like that if you're like me um and you find it very difficult to visualize things you'll get very frustrated because you won't be able to start you won't know where to start when you're trying to do a painting So what I do is I uh have another painting in front of me or if not a painting a photograph or something anything really um and I don't copy it but I just have it there and for some reason um having something else within Striking Distance of me enables me to get started and then once I've got started I'm okay and uh so that's way it works but and then I don't I'm not actually I've said this before I know but not everybody will have heard me say this I don't actually think about what I'm painting I just follow the paint and and I if I thought about it if I think about it I can't do it I get stuck so it's a funny thing we're I suppose we're all different but we're all similar and I know other people will say in the comments below I'm sure they'll say oh yeah no I'm like that or no I have very detailed pictures in my head all the time I just wish that I could paint them I'm not like that I have no detailed pictures in my head head ever and I didn't realize until very recently when people started to talk about this a Fantasia thing that that there was a real a real possibility for people to have real looking images in their heads and I I think um that's a there's a very big difference between the two different types of people my daughter is the same as me and um which isn't entirely surprising and I have a feeling that my son is as well although we've never talked about it um but yeah we're very verbal people what we tend to do is is talk in incessantly and that's where our brains are best occupied when it comes to imagination it's not so much and when I don't know about myself I was I know that Tamsin my daughter was not the kind of child that um enjoyed make believe or playing with dolls or pretending um you know being uh what do you call it um playing doctors and nurses or whatever we used to call it or all that kind of thing I think I was a little bit more imaginative than she was but she didn't want to do anything like that she liked and still does to do puzzles and jigsaws and uh sums and things like that but she was not interested in the least in her dolls she had a wonderful collection of dolls and teddy bears and all sorts of toys and she never played any of them yeah I on the other hand um when I was a child I wanted to organize things and I used to I used to I used to be the one who started the club you know I don't know English people will have read Secret 7 I wanted to be like Susan in secret Serv and have a club and I so I had members of my club and then people had to have badges and all that kind of thing so yeah that's the kind of person I was and I used to go to the museum the local Museum and uh draw the animals and the r you know all the things in the glass cases and uh I was a bit of a nerd is that what they call it yeah in my own way anyway so what I'm doing here is I'm just filling this page up with various uh different sized and different shaped um floral type uh Motif thingy what sits and I'm going to more or less I think probably cover the page with um uh with with pink motifs and then I'll probably come in with some um dark blue or or dark greenish blue or something like [Music] that um yeah so that is what we're doing and I'm just mixing the colors completely at random and I'm not going to be able to think of enough different uh units to have different ones all over the paper so I'm going to be repeating myself a bit um but that's okay I think I did say didn't I that I'm working on hot Press paper and you will find for sure that if you use hot press you'll get a completely different um effect the paint works completely differently it doesn't matter what kind of paint you're using it works differently on hot press to what it does on cold press so this is much smoother much less tooth tooth is the word that they use to describe the texture so if something has a lot of tooth it means it's more textured and if it has very little tooth like hot Press paper that means it's smoother and the paint sits in a slightly different way I suppose it doesn't soak in as much yeah I hope you have a go at doing something like this it's it's quite an enjoyable way to spend time it doesn't it's not too demanding is it really and you just do whatever flowers come into your head and you turn it around the other way for a bit I think it's quite nice to have a sort of repeating pattern I don't think there's anything wrong with with that and I'm in a minute I think I might do some slightly bigger maybe but uh it's the colors really that are interesting not so much the shapes I go for the slightly more bluish move here I'm using mostly these colors here so the mes pinks purples no not purples not really the moves really they're not not purples purple I always think has got I don't know a lot more red in it hasn't it you can probably still hear Gabriel singing outside a have closed the door to keep the dogs in because while I'm painting they're being naughty and making big holes in the garden because they're trying to capatch the moles and Zen actually I think it was him but somebody has caught four and we we had quite an infestation of moles in the garden and but we know that they've caught at least four and so that's good so there are a fewer mole Hills but now we've got a garden full of holes where the dog dogs have dug out the moles so you really can't win you see what I mean anyway and here in France we are still waiting for the summer to arrive it's still cold and windy and wet and I don't know what's going on with the weather because I was watching um well I wasn't really watching it my husband watches the tennis but he was watching Queens the tennis tournament which is going on his Queens in Birmingham or somewhere like that I'm not quite sure where it is but it is in England for sure and they've got beautiful weather it's sunny and hot and everybody's wearing hats and sunglasses and we're sitting here in the cold and rain and it's not normal for England to be hotter than France I don't know what that's all about Okay so we've got um most of this piece of paper now covered with pink and we could be brave at this point and come in with some stronger darker colors otherwise it's not going to be complete is it at all so we might want to turn this around so we can see the greens and the blues and maybe we'll go for something like this and uh oh it's a bit wet I don't want to put my arm right over the top of it do I so we're going to hope that this color combination is going to work so um try and keep my arm off of it a bit to put another even darker can hear cows mooving I don't know if you can hear that so either cows moving or chainsaw one or the other uh we could add um some of the blue to some of the pink just to make it more interesting like that sort of the veins in green or blue or whatever color that is and now so we have to kind of fit things in I'm kind of wondering whether it would have been better to have um had a background I'm not sure it would have made me paint differently that's for sure but well we're doing this for the fun of it aren't we so I think that's a good idea to have some kind of Fine Lines like that what do you think I keep moving the paper to make sure that you can see the whole thing cuz I know that I keep keep on wandering about about the paper so quite a few people have mentioned that they either have had or knew somebody who had a uh an incident with an exploding shower door so it turns out that it's not as un usual as all that it does make you wonder whether shower glass shower doors are actually safe doesn't it apparently as they get older the crystals inside the door inside the glass change their chemical composition and become more fragile and likely to explode so it's a kind of age related problem and uh it makes you think that maybe if you have a shower that's more than 10 years old might be worth considering replacing the doors with new ones before they explode I don't know so at the moment we've got a sh curtain in there which is not going to explode but the other door might might it and it seems strange that it doesn't ever happen when anyone's in the shower all these people who said it happened but it all happened overnight and D did at 1:00 in the morning I don't know very strange so I'm just putting some quite dark um Meandering lines here filling up the gaps so this is a sort of Christmas green a little bit more oh yeah Christmas in July well we have to celebrate that so we'll be putting up some Christmas related videos next month and also oh I must remember I had forgotten about this um the doodle wash Charlie o Charlie o what is it what's his name Charlie o can't remember anyway Charlie who organizes it and we've got our mugs and pouches available for sale on his website um which came out really really well actually uh hang on a minute I'll show you just a sec this is the world of watercolor um month pouch that I designed for uh for Charley for doodle wash and you can purchase that if you go over to his website and there's a mug similar to that as well uh which supports the um art for children Foundation which is nice charity it's definitely true that children need art and it's also true that some children don't have much access to it okay so so far so good I think probably need to look at some of these elements and think about adding lines to them to make them a little bit more interesting um so I've got dark green here and we can I'm using a size I think this is size four with a very nice point you could use pencils for this or brush pens um but if you if you use a brush you just need to touch very lightly onto the uh the leaf that you're embellishing use the very tip of the brush and you can get quite a fine line and when you press down of course a little bit harder you get a darker line so you have more control you do have some control and we can pick up some mauve well and go over some of these pink ones it's quite fun this part of it quite enjoy this we can put little dots on the centers and you know really know where it's going to end up put some more lines on this one here this one try not to touch it and smudge it put dots in these circles for example uh want that to be a bit darker and then we have this beige here that's a nice color isn't it so we put our lines on on in pretty much the same color and we can have can either leave the centers light if you want or you can darken them down a bit but it definitely when you put the lines in and you basically you're putting in a bit of Shadow into all of your leaves and it makes them look more more more like painting and so that's what you need to do so I'm just darkening down the base there a little bit and join the leaves onto the stems with a slightly darker beige color and then put some lines in the center and we could put some more little dots at the Top If we want can make that a kind of theme um right and there's this one to do yet we could possibly and this is where my inability to imagine stuff is a little bit of an issue because what I want to do is put something darker in so I don't know I don't think I can be brave enough to go with a dark brown but I might be able to risk a very dark green perhaps like that I did have some dark green here didn't I so it's not going to ruin it if I put a bit more dark green in so maybe these little branches they need circles on the ends of them perhaps some of them and the the more I am aware of this inability I have to keep the paper within view no uh of this inability I have to imagine things the more I realize what a what a problem that is and why it is probably that most people who do painting if you know they probably can do that be quite interested to hear from other people you know whether they feel they are normal in terms of being able to imagine visualize things or abnormal like me so you get to this point and I don't know about you but I usually think around about now that it's time probably to um have a cup of tea no uh to um to do something with with some pen but I'm not going to do that with this one because I think it's quite nice and delicate move you out the way because I know I'm am perfectly aware that my field of painting is I'm cutting off far too often part of the picture that's bit of a problem we need some more up here a bit awkward because it's wet but we could put some um some gold or something like that on um yeah maybe that's what we need perhaps we just need some little tiny flowers in dark brown like that what do you think so I'm using that Rusty color there being a little bit cautious doing them really small yeah yeah we could put quite a few of these I think and the idea being when you put some little tiny dark accents that that brings the rest of the painting into a little bit more sharper Focus or contrast and I think that works I don't think I just discovered that though that's not a very good one um I mean I know I didn't just discover that that's well-known fact it is well known said mots it is a well-known fact yeah that's quite good too just put some little dots like that so this is what you could call a process video I suppose a process painting a process going through the process that I'm going through of uh designing something I suppose you could say I know lots of people these days don't bother with real paint they just go straight to procreate but to design their designs but that's fine if you're um making a living out of the designs and selling them which I think must be very difficult with AI out there right now but uh it's not really what I I'm not doing it for that purpose luckily for me so I'm just I'm just doing it because because it's interesting to build up something and just keep going I know I've said this before so now I'm putting some really quite dark accents which I couldn't have done that before until I put those other dark brown on I wouldn't have felt able to embellish these tiny leaves in this way and so it's a process just keep going this one down [Music] here and it needs to be darker [Music] for y can we we can see can't we how it's building up even though the elements are really small you can still put quite a bit bit of detail into them in different ways and all the time you're doing this you're practicing mixing the paints learning how you can use the different kuraki colors to get different things I've just mixed some gray with the brown to make kind of quite a nice gentle neutral mauy gray color like that which we can then use on uh on these leaves here for example and these ones I think I'm probably coming to the point now where I might be thinking of possibly stopping um do we need some more dark up here perhaps I mean we could carry on we could do a lot more we could do a lot more but well I've got a few more minutes yet it's coming up towards lunchtime I do find it's easier to paint in the morning not everybody does that not everyone does but I do uh and it's nearly lunchtime now so so is there anything I have missed out completely I could add something here and some some dark in the middle there a little bit and this one here doesn't have any stems that's that and well I think that's probably about it so I think we might leave it here you could put a few more can't stop you see could put a few sort of dark ones in here no reason why not and it could you could continue you could I keep saying that I know and you could continue with more of the brown ones um yeah and we could put dots on those ones but I don't think I will so anyway I hope you enjoyed that I'm going to leave it here now and don't forget don't forget to go and visit doodle wash and next month is as I say um world watercolor month and also Christmas in July on the 25th of July so we'll be doing something for that and um yeah so there we are one uh page of flowers in a way which I don't think I've actually done before hope you enjoyed that using the cirari paints which I know lots of you have bought because I recommended them and I do like them very much and use them an awful lot so uh go over to D
