[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hi sewing friends welcome to my sewing room it's nice to have you here my name is beth and today we're making a simple block i'm calling square dance it takes four strips of fabric cut the width of the fabric one and a half inches and a square in the middle there's one little trick to get that square in the middle and stay till the end of the video i made a few blocks with different color ways that you might want to see towards the end so let's get started here are the four red fabrics i'll be using in my block i'm trimming off the edge to give myself a nice straight edge and then i will cut strips one and a half inches wide the width of the fabric [Music] [Music] do [Music] do [Music] do [Music] [Music] so now i am going to trim off the edge of those four strips of fabric that i've sewn together and i'm going to divide them into chunks of seven and a half inches long so i should have four pieces of that sewn together scrappy fabric ready to make my block [Music] the blue square in the middle there is three and a half inches so i'll be working around that blue square [Music] now it's time to sew all those pieces together and so i will take the blue square in the middle and one of the side pieces and i will sew just a partial seam and i'll leave an opening then i can go around from there on and i can sew straight across you just have to keep positioning your block and make sure you're adding the side pieces in the right place [Music] and this is the last one to go so when i lay it down there i need to kind of open up that blue square that open seam and make sure that i don't run into that piece of the block on the bottom there that's kind of waiting so now we are ready to sew the last seam just fold it over find out where you left off on your first seam and i like to stick my needle down to kind of get good placement and sew all the way to the end and that's all there is to it after making that red block with the blue center i thought it might be interesting to make a block with the opposite colors and see how they looked together and i kind of like the way they alternated the color it gave the quilt a lot more interest so here i am making that second block [Music] [Music] you [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] um [Music] then there's the what if what if i use only solids and i use a black center i wonder what that would look like and i wonder what it will look like if i switched around and put the orange strips in the middle so these blocks are a lot of fun to make maybe if i alternate the way the color strips are going maybe that'll look nice i decided in the end i would put the red on the outside of this one [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you
