he entered the big leagues as a teenager and excelled right away manny machado got all of it then he earned a reputation as one of the finest third baseman in the game [Music] he was an all-star four times in his first six full seasons and a gold glove winner twice by manny machado has done it again but very few have been able to get to know manny machado it's not always where you think when you see a book you know it's a there's more to it when you open it now for the first time he opens that book and his home to share his story as we shine the spotlight on the life of manny machado machado drives one to deep left field high deep and very good manny machado hialeah florida [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] the manny machado story begins in the miami suburb of hialeah florida it was there that his mother's dominican roots and love of the game were passed on genetically baseball's been in my family for you know before i was born so that's that's something that um you know i was just born with since i was born as many thoughts as a kid i could think of was always with a baseball bat and uh you know thinking of baseball there was no father in his home but there was plenty of family my mom and my grandma basically just raised raised me and um mom went above and beyond trying to try to make us her son fulfill his dreams as a baseball player she was always my father my mom my friend you know basically doing everything for me um you know very grateful for having the family that i had to help my mom to help me um you know become the person i am today long before manny was born baseball was part of the family his mother rosa was raised in the dominican republic where baseball is king my grandfather is a huge baseball fan uh you know my entire family is always rooted for for the teams over there you know between my grandma my grandfather they always rooted for the opposite team you know one route for they say the other route for lasagna so there was always that fight between both of them but you know it was always about baseball so as long as i can remember that's that's that's the main topic that you go to nunia's uh house is probably gonna be the topic of baseball you know 24 7 just uh you know it just tells you everything that they that they love for the sport manny's uncle gio brito stepped into his life on many levels and his grandfather francisco nunez instilled confidence he wanted me to become a big leader he always had faith in me and you know on the other hand i had my uncle which was basically my father and you know basically raised me and taught me everything i know about the sport right after work will always be with me take me straight to the field take me to the batting cages take me to the park wherever it may be but it was always with the bar and a glove in our hands and you know time after time and day after day night after night it would literally be just baseball with him and he was always there for me no matter what and i know this game today is because you know everything he's taught me to love the game and to appreciate it as much as i can and you know to this day this is why you know i go out there every day at a baseball field and play this game just because knowing that you know it takes me back to those days that you know i'll be waiting for him you know after he got out of work without eating dinner without anything it was straight outside or straight to the park you know to go make me better to this day he's always trying to tell me how to how to hit some pitches which which is not easy but you know we always gotta you know listen listen to him for as long as you can remember being a big leaguer was the goal part of that dream was studying some of the best in the business a-rod at the time and you know uh ken griffey and derek jeter were probably my top three favorite baseball players two of them played shortstop like i did and you know the other one had one of the nicest swings this game has ever seen so i always wanted to kind of imitate imitate that as much as i could following little league in hialeah baseball became more serious we started traveling a little more we started going to orlando there was like big tournaments in orlando big tournaments in georgia that's when we kind of started like shifting out a little more that way but it was mostly just like you know this south florida area south florida is a hotbed of amateur baseball talent burrito miami private high school had won five state titles that included 2006 the spring before manny's freshman year the school's baseball tradition was an attraction it was very very small school and not a lot of people out of south florida would know about it but you know it's something that you know it's grateful to go there with manny at shortstop breto's success on the field continued the panthers won three district titles and nearly won another state championship in 2008 finishing second you know it was cool experience coming going to high school and uh you know being recognized with the scouts coming to watch us play manny earned all county honors but it took a while for major league teams to notice late into you know my junior year and nobody knew who i was i got disinvited from tournaments just because you know i wasn't a big time name like a bryce harper or whatever um so finally got invited to a couple tournaments you know they saw my talent and that's when i kind of put myself on a radar pretty pretty late and you know and then that whole summer was just a blur going tournament at the tournament doing what i had to do playing baseball just leaving it on the field and people saw you know what type of player i was by then manny's mother believed he should go to college and the colleges came calling i got my scholarship to go to fiu signed that and then that same year was kind of when i started blowing up and people started recognizing me a lot more and you know started putting myself on the map and that's when people started coming up to me and like hey you know you got a chance of going in the draft pretty high or more people kept you know coming to scout me and uh you know and that's when well when i finally hit me i was like man i probably got a good chance of you know becoming a professional baseball player and hopefully starting my career a little earlier manny had become a fan of the hometown university of miami hurricanes baseball team and its first baseman yonder alonzo i was following him on facebook already that's to begin with back in the day he couldn't train with me at the moment just because he was in high school when i was in college so it would interfere with obviously the rules of uh you know college baseball but um you know i told him i gave him a a year window where i said hey you have a year do your thing and then if you want to work out if you really want to get it just call me in 2008 alonso was drafted in the first round seventh overall by the cincinnati reds sure enough as soon as the year went by he called me up that next day and he said hey i'm here and you know i want to train and i want to get to know what it's like to not only be a professional but you know just get after it and get better with with you and the rest of the guys he just started talking to me and you know giving me advice he never said anything about agency or anything he was just talking to me as as a regular human being and you know giving me advice about baseball what to expect that year and like hey you know i went through the same process that you're going through right now it was all about helping and helping out you know whoever would would ask he just gave me a run down literally detail by detail on like how things will happen and it happened just like that it's a lot better when they say you know you can go around the wall not through the wall so i wanted to give him those advices and hopefully he can run with it as he has and you know he's been who he is now i had told him hey i want to work out with you you know once once i sign and he's like yeah hit me up you know you know and we'll get it done in 2010's june draft bryce harper was chosen first by the nationals with a second pick the pirates chose pitcher jameson tyonne your age is telling you hey you're gonna go second you're gonna go third you're gonna go fifth i mean there's so many options that are available you just literally didn't know and at that point i was just trying to just be with my family i had a bunch of family over and be with my family just kind of soak it in and with the third pick the baltimore orioles chose manny machado once i heard my name i mean that's that's probably one of the best feelings that that you could possibly have being drafted that high convinced manny's mom that it was okay to give professional baseball a try before college she always wanted me to continue to follow my dreams so you know i think going third overall i think it's it's pretty wise choice to go and play professional at that point but june became july which turned into august and manny had yet to sign with the orioles i had turned 18 at the time and your agent just told you you know wait to sign and you just listen to them and you just wait it's black and white now a little more black and white than it was back then where you got to kind of negotiate a little more so there was a strategy to it i just wanted to go play baseball first though he reconnected with yonder alonso sent me text congrats and that offseason i'm like hey i'm finally a pro baseball player like remember what you said we're going to work out together and uh you know we we started texting back and forth soon they had a plan to meet at the university of miami for workouts a decade later it's still clear in both of their minds how the first workout went awful it was awful had never worked out before it was tough for sure i really didn't know what i was expecting i knew i wanted to work out and he was like hey you know bring a got in the water and a banana because you're going to need it and i was like okay whatever you say i'm going to do it so bring a got in the water and i brought my banana and it was bad couldn't even squat um you know he was just very lanky and just uh uncomfortable i mean it was a lot of running a lot of lifting i had no idea what i was getting myself into but i've come a long way since that day first month or so he would you know call me up and said oh i can't make it today um or something like that and and i'll be like no you you know you got to be here you got to be here and uh you know as much as we wanted it for him he wanted it for himself eventually and then he was able to understand that you know you have to train and you have to take care of your body and do all the little things you have to do to make sure you you can stay healthy throughout the year [Music] you can see the growth in him as the days went on and the months went on and you know purely now as the years have gone by he's gotten so much better and you know it's been a lot of fun to watch to this day each off season yonder and manny get together to work out obviously a little different you know technology and you know new sciences have come out so you you learn and and you advance on things but pretty much the same i mean we're running just as much lifting probably a lot more than than i did back then so you know it's gotten a lot better since since that one day but you know i'm not not feeling it as bad anymore 10 years later you know we're best friends and uh you know doing the same thing that we did 10 years ago which is working out and um and pushing each other as much as we can up next manny on the minor leagues and making a big splash on the big stage in his first week as the spotlight shines on padres infielder fanny machado spotlight manny machado is presented by petco official pet coach of the san diego padres it's time for a new era of padres baseball you all ready [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's awesome put it on and it's a new uh new journey for us we're trying to bring a culture over here and we're trying to bring a winning team a winning ball club and at the end of their championship to the city [Music] [Applause] after signing with baltimore in august of 2010 18 year old manny machado immediately joined the orioles minor league system he spent a little more than two seasons as a prospect in the minors it's pretty hard but it's something that i've always dreamed about doing and bus rides you know staying in hotels playing in different cities you're literally hitting bp every day you're playing baseball every day you're doing what you love so you know definitely uh very interesting going from 18 years old straight into pro ball and riding the buses and being in towns that you've never heard of before and you know those are memories that i would always cherish and have in the summer of 2012 playing for the orioles double a team in bowie maryland manny's manager gary kendall called him into his office you told me you want to talk to me and i need to go pack my bags at the stadium and i was like what like did you guys just you know did you guys just release me like what am i going home like what's the deal and it was actually telling me to pack my bags i was going up to the big leagues and once i got that call like you're nervous at the time when you get that call and them coming to my room after i got the call was you know hey man it's going to be awesome like you know send me some bats when you get up there and send me some bgs and but they're like man you're going to do you're gonna be awesome you're gonna you're gonna do a good job and you know no one no one deserves it more than you and uh you know make us make us all proud and when they said that i mean i think that's that's where it kicked in that okay like i could do this when manny was called up in early august of 2012 the orioles were in second place just five and a half games behind the yankees and in the midst of a pennant race manager buck showalter said all the right things to his new teenage infielder first thing he tells them that hey you're here you're here because you deserved it and you know just go out there and play don't worry about anything else just play baseball and and you're gonna be fine and you know having that confidence going into the game just makes it a lot easier that you know you don't have to you don't have the distractions you can just go out there and be yourself in the big leagues for the first time and in a pennant race manny was in the orioles lineup right away but there was a catch baltimore already had a solid shortstop who could hit in jj hardy so after playing just two games at third base in the minor leagues machado would play third for the orioles rapidly learning a new position at the game's highest level we did have a little pressure work trying to compete for a playoff spot at the time and here you go you're putting a 19 year old kid to play a position he's never played before and in one of the most crucial times that the organization's never you know made the playoffs for the last 15 20 years or had a winning season in the last 20 years so the coaches you know my teammates they all gave me that that motivation and that that kindness to make me feel like you know this is just the same game that i was playing since since i was six years old so putting all that aside i just went out there and played baseball and it just came natural to me to say it came natural is an understatement in his first big league games manny singled and tripled [Music] his first major league hit maybe a triple it is he's in it the next day manny homer twice drove in four runs after his first few days in the bigs he was named the american league's player of the week it was just so awesome fast to me that i didn't even let let us sink in and that whole season that first whole season with the playoffs and i mean it was just so unreal the orioles earned a wild card berth beating texas then playing the yankees in a division series me being you know from hialeah florida now i'm here in the big leagues i'm living my dream in the postseason playing in yankee stadium it was just a big blur and i was just all i could think of was like man like this is actually happening the yankees would win that tight series three games to two but the experience was priceless after the season was over i was like man like i actually did it you know i actually faced cece sabathia you know verlander i was facing andy petty like mariano like you're facing guys that were idols to me you know those are players i was looking up to and now you're in the same field as them although his first couple of months and the bigs were a hit preparation for the next season began soon after with yonder alonso as his workout partner and friend it was inevitable that manny would meet yonder's sister yanay university of miami chicken girl as i was leaving she was pulling in to have lunch with him and that's when we first met uh you know we just became friends since and then me and younger got closer and then we obviously started seeing each other a little more and we'll just try to keep talking but she wouldn't she wasn't having she wasn't having it and you know she had a boyfriend at the time and then you know years come years pass and uh you know we ended up we ended up dating after that we had a talk i remember in the weight room on a bike and uh he had told me that you know my sister actually said hey you know let's go on a date so uh you know he was just kind of giving me uh the the whole list on what was going on and i kind of just told him our beliefs as a family and as obviously as a man and you know what you have to do again he was 18 years old at that time so it was a learning curve not only for him but for myself too before his first full season in the big leagues manny and yane were engaged it was right before spring training of 2013 you know i bought the ring and i had to talk to her dad first it was tough to go ask him if i could marry his daughter but it went awesome you know i'm very blessed to have uh you know the in-laws that i have that same day i got the i got i got the blessing and um you know i grabbed the picnic basket i finally went i bought a wine bottle i got some got some flowers and i told her we're going to go on a picnic and we went on a picnic and we went to the beach we laid out the blanket brought out the you know the wine glasses and you know as she was pouring some i got on my knees and i proposed yeah it's pretty a pretty special day their storybook wedding was held the next year at a grand chateau just outside of paris france in 2013 manny's first full year in the majors he led the american league with 51 doubles and there was more i make my first all-star team and when i get that call was i'm like man now this is just crazy this is just this is just a dream go to the game and i'm in the clubhouse and when i'm in the clubhouse i'm next to robinson canal king felix you know prince fielder abu pujols you know mariano's last all-star game like i mean that's when i'm like after that i'm like man like this this this is like someone pinched me this is unreal i'm just a kid from hialeah who's enjoying himself playing baseball and he i look around i'm next to hall of famers to cap his first full season a quick study manny won a gold glove in his new position he also showed desire and durability playing in 156 games but the six games he missed were due to a severe left knee injury suffered in late september his season ended on a stretcher in tampa bay and surgery followed and there would be more hurdles in 2014. that's next as we shine the spotlight on padres infielder manny machado in every full season of manny machado's career in which he was healthy he has played in at least 156 games twice he's played in all 162 but his 2014 campaign would be delayed as he rehabbed from his knee injury from the previous season that 2014 season would also end prematurely 1-1 delivery they did shattered the bat down at the plate is machado he's hurt he's grabbed his knee yikes this time it was his right knee had surgeries on both knees uh first time i ever had surgery um you know just a lot of scenarios that was kind of tough for me at the time taught me a lot about myself taught me a lot about you know my body tell me a lot about the game of baseball as well and you know at the end of the day taught you about life you can't think you can't take things for granted when he got back on the field he didn't leave it from 2015 through 2018 he was the premier third baseman in the american league he averaged 35 homers and 96 runs batted in he won another gold glove and went to three more all-star games but in 2018 with free agency looming the orioles feared they could not afford them they're already talking about trading you that whole off-season and you know when you go into season and you know they're still talking about trading you and you're only going to be there for two months and you know honestly it was pretty pretty sad because you know we build a lot of relationships uh you know myself and my wife in baltimore in july of 2018 manny was traded to the dodgers by the team with which he had spent his entire career you know it's not as easy as people think like okay yeah pack your bags but you know you got to move your whole family cross-country you got to pack up your whole house you got to pack up a lot of things so when i finally got the call it was kind of kind of anticipating it already i kind of knew ahead of time that was going to happen at the same time once you get the call and that's when you're like oh man like this is for real you have to start doing research on the team you know going from a division from the american league to a national league like i i barely knew any of the players i was going to go meet just by watching them on tv only you know going to l.a was pretty cool to obviously reach the world series you know play with play with a different organization um you know put on a different uniform for the first time following the 2018 world series manny was a free agent but months passed as he went through his off season workouts for the first time since high school he didn't know which team he joined come spring the first time we probably talked about manny was uh i think winter meetings of that year we were getting frustrated with some of the you know some of the different trade proposals and possibilities and i think i called josh stein up our assistant gm at about five in the morning and uh kind of like half joking but kind of half serious it was hey kind of you know like let's forget about this we just go out and sign manny machado instead of you know trying to trade some of our better prospects for talking about our better prospects in these trades and when spring training of 2019 began he still hadn't signed not knowing where you're gonna end up not knowing where your family's gonna end up not knowing where you're gonna be playing what uniform you're gonna be putting on so you're working out you have no idea what you're working out for am i working out to play shortstop i'm working out to play third base am i working out to play in japan or am i working out to play in san diego the padres got into the machado sweepstakes late but when they did they put a lot of chips on the table we got more serious when we got into january and manny was still on on the board we got a phone call from my agent we're like hey you know aj preller in san diego they want to sit down with you and meet with you and at that time we had already spoken to a lot of teams and they're kind of late to the race maybe late to the race but very soon padres were in the lead the story behind how aj prowler signed in is next as the spotlight shines on manny machado [Music] with spring training of 2019 underway manny machado was still a free agent itching to get back on the field competition on the golf course with his wife yanay and brother-in-law yonder alonso helped ease manny's mind now stepping in out of miami florida manny machado t-box number one that never happens take that there's some betting going on friendly bedding so hopefully i can get a nice little birdie man sure and i'm short oh too hard oh and boom goes the dynamite get in oh what did you get four you sure about the four we used to like come in here and like play and just have fun and like now we're like forget that i want to like beat you and like i want to like get better at it 100 bucks to the hole closest to the hall closest to the hole let's go oh buddy donna hunter oh yeah i think i'd rather be where i'm at dog is not how you start how you finish i mean hey jesus lord what a bad day as spring training continued padres general manager aj prowler went to florida to learn all he could about one of baseball's top remaining free agents we just want to make sure that you know the person kind of just make sure we're aligned from a goal standpoint hear his background his story see what motivated him uh see what questions he had about the padre see what he thought about the whole process and he really just went in open-minded we're like man like are they for real like if they're for real like okay let's do it but if not like you know we're good where we're at yonder alonzo helped manny handle the mental aspects of the waiting game patience is a big key in this whole free agency thing and understanding that you you can only control what you can control and making sure you're going to train every day making sure you're taking care of your body making sure you're being a good person being a good family man and obviously understanding that you have to train as hard as you can to be ready as the padres prepared their pitch yonder who had spent his first three big league seasons with san diego let manny know about the city and the organization everybody around and associated with the san diego padres i thought that was a first class organization and obviously they gave me the opportunity to start my career as well and you know it was a great moment and obviously i told them that finally manny agreed to a one-hour meeting with aj preller manny and yanay would meet the padres gm near manny's florida home at havana harry's we walk in and we're like okay you know aj or whatever um they told us he's in that back corner and he's over there sitting by himself with a big notebook you know 250 page no book that you that you buy in in walgreens that i had in school that's what he had there and we introduced ourselves it's supposed to be an hour meeting and ended up being like six hours we actually didn't get to the food we just drank about six pots of coffee and we talked about everything talked about his draft process we talked a lot about his family his mom especially like his experiences you know playing under buck show walter and what he learned there and you know definitely talked about some of the playoff experiences and you know the situation there with the dodgers obviously i think at that time he was you know a guy that was you know i think probably in the news for a couple of things on the field that uh that that we wanted to get straight down and just get his to his point of view on that as well then uh also about you know things that were important to him off the field and definitely important the lna as well all he wanted was coffee and he kept drinking coffee cafe legend more cafe con leches so obviously we love cafe on edges so we just kept ordering it too and he kept writing down these little notes on his on his notebook and i'm like you know look at my wife and i look at her i'm like what is he writing like seriously what is he writing like we can't read and it was like like all over the page and i'm like man i really want to know what's what's going on there i just wanted to make sure that that we covered every every point and was able to go back and be very thorough with it and i think that was that was the nature of the of the notebook i could tell he was kind of trying to peek over a couple of times what are you writing in there and you know just mainly just like all right make sure we hit on this point or that point or things that he said that that kind of spur spurred on some more thought from mayan he asked us about everything i mean about our foundation about our family about our i mean it was it was like as as in-depth as as a meeting that we've had with any other team i mean gone in depth on everything that we've literally done in our entire lives i think that just told him like hey this is it's a group that's you know i think like level-headed and the interest was real but it was real on a baseball level and i think that coming out of that my guess is manny thought we were pretty serious and probably spurred on the next couple weeks come a week or two weeks later i mean i'm wearing a san diego pat they come they made the highest offer and you know here we are and it was just by sitting in that supposed to be a one hour conversation to five hours in havana harry's very excited proud honored today to introduce manny machado as the newest member of the san diego padres found a new home i i'm truly just so lucky to be where where i'm at right now and um you know i wouldn't change it i wouldn't change it for the world but leading up to that was was was was not as easy as people think it's finally over finally a padre of course the padres generous financial offer the largest team history was a big factor in signing but there were other reasons machado chose san diego they literally fit everything that we we were asking for in teams that we're looking for how are they with their families you know is ownership involved are they going to have i don't have a relationship with with the owner you know where baltimore didn't have that you know the team the farm system obviously was a big part you know they have a bright future we've been to the city before we love the city i believed in aj and what he said in that meeting in the conversations we had before uh after that we just believed in that in that process of the organization where in the direction that they were heading in you know we really wanted to be a part of that part of that journey and a part of what's going to happen in in the future deep and very good in manny's first season as a padre he hammered 32 homers and drove in 85 runs despite getting to spring training late and settling into a new town i love the city uh you know playing in front of the fans this year was i've come from a pretty good fan base in baltimore and now going to san diego you know you could just feel you could just feel that energy every time i mean opening day was one of the most special things i've ever been a part of and you know i could just feel that that energy throughout the whole stadium throughout the whole city of that they just want something and you know what that one is obviously the championship manny formed bonds with new teammates and played defense the way he always has machado backhand from foul ground or you'd better believe it manny being manny come on the players could see that you know we're in this to win and you know little by little things started changing we're we're winning you know we started off the the first couple weeks we started off hot we're first place for a while uh you know going into the break where you know close having the wild card and then after that i just kind of just died down a little bit we play this game for the fans we play this game to because we love it you know and to give give them a show to go out there and play and leave it all on the field and then have them feel that same energy that we have and they're giving us more energy i mean i think you know we're not in a better city than san diego to be playing in front of those fans so we had our ups and downs throughout the year but overall i loved how everything panned out and how things are moving forward up next what he's doing to keep things moving forward as the spotlight shines on manny machado the miami area is part of manny machado the palm trees the green the life the air the breeze from the ocean that we get um there's nothing like it and you know for me it's the beach the food everything from miami it's this is what we know this is what that was what i know and i lived here for 27 years and hasn't changed one bit and so each off season manny returns to his roots to work out and enjoy life now manny's locked in for the long term i'm excited to you know if that haven't felt this good you know in in years manny works out five to six days a week at the university of miami with his buddy yonder alonzo and his personal trainer nick soto it's the hardest part because this is the behind the scenes you don't get to play any games but somehow you got to be able to wake up every morning suck it up and go through you know two three hours of grueling training and then hitting and feeling and all that other stuff with the lights off [Music] hit we basically take them through various phases getting them getting them basically peaked right when they get into right into camp so key to you know put in the hours and put in the time the first phase we do is we kind of try to get them to recover from a long season so we do a lot of what we call prehab work which basically owning new positions a lot of a lot of mobility a lot of flexibility and then just understanding where your body's at i'm trying to close this gap and push that knee forward slowly [Music] 10 seconds come on fight it fight it fight it fight it fight it big chest big chest lean mag on that sucker as the rehab process keeps going we'll start working into it into that strength phase then we take it into a power phase that power phase then turns into like a speed phase and then that speed phase really is just all about explosiveness and that carries them right into right into uh spring training [Music] obviously they're still practicing all their baseball stuff at the same time so it's hours upon hours of training they got to suck it up um it's it's not it's not easy it's not easy i'm better than i've ever been and i'm looking forward to stepping on that field with my teammates and stepping into san diego and you know giving them an mvp season the commitment to it the uh the desire he's got in him it's gonna be pretty cool i think it's been fun to kind of just work get better and think about baseball and how we can you know bring a championship to san diego if there is to be a championship for san diego two of the keys to that will be manny and a 21 year old who reminds some of the younger machado fernando tatis jr it's all about competition and you know who could bring it every day and i think that's how you bring the best out of players i always say being next to a guy like that is is always an advantage for me you know just a guy you just can learn and you can have his his voice you know when you're struggling or something's going wrong by him making all those plays and going out there and producing and playing every single day brings the best out of me and it brings out the best out of the team when when players push each other we bond a little more just because we're you know we're so close so much closer and we can talk throughout the games and like hey what are you doing are you moving this way are you moving that way so i'm keeping him in the game as well as him keeping me in the game it's pretty fun to watch when when we're all you know in sync the hot shot picked it short by tatis on the back end gets up and throws him out fernando tati's charcoal dives and makes the catch of foul ground this one bloop to left center out goes to t said he'll make the catch how about that manny machado laying it out a fantastic round that's how you win championships that's how you get better and it's by bringing the best out of everyone else next to you not just yourself when it comes to defense it appears tatis jr has the tools to win a gold glove and since manny has won two tatis is playing next to a willing and very able teacher now that bodes well for winning baseball coming up insight on his personal life as we wrap up manny machado's story on this edition of spotlight spotlight manny machado is presented by petco official pet coach of the san diego padres [Music] manny machado and yonder alonso share ownership in this miami area batting cave they become as close as any brothers i hit a homer and i came around and then he hit a home run he was like peeking at me so i was talking a little bit of smack when we were younger it was more like civil and now we're like let's just have more fun with it [Music] another person in manny's life is petey suarez petey's uh you know one of one of uh you know my closest friends uh you know he's been part of the family for a long time and he knows about everything that's number one he knows everyone everybody everything so if you want to get smart i just go talk to petey sometimes he's always with us in the cage he's always around us he knows exactly what i like to do what we like to do where he goes vice versa but he's just one of those friends that you always love to have because you know no matter what he will always have your back um no matter what the situation is and you know those are friends that don't come come along and you know to have them close close to close to me and close to the family you know just means a lot to us and there are two more very important members of the family i have an alaskan cle guy which is named kobe um he is seven and then i have my adopted son which is gigi bochi he is 12. he is a chitsu you know coming home every day they're always excited to see you they always want to give you kisses and jump on you and they give you the love that's that's that's that's that's different um and it's it's pretty awesome to come home too and they never have a bad day so you know it just takes away all that pain of being over four or four strikeouts and you lost the game so that makes it a little better when you get home and you see them and they're just excited to see you on the field manny machado exudes confidence and he backs it up with all-star caliber play however what you may not know about the proud padre is that off the field he's just a family man family means everything i mean families family is the most important thing you can have money you can have anything you want in this world um but if you don't have a family it doesn't mean anything i'm beyond grateful to have the people that i have next to me and have the family that i have and they're the reason why i wake up every day to go out there and be the best person i could possibly be manny machado's life includes a very small circle of friends and family they are the few who truly know the man i've learned people are always just going to judge you for judge a book bites cover and you know i think the only thing that i would say will probably be you know it's not always what you think when you see a book you know it's there's more to it when you open it if manny's health obliges the next chapter of his baseball story could be a special one in brown and gold as he and his teammates continue to work towards bringing a championship to san diego
