[Music] hey what's up everybody it's part 2 of the antler handled hunter time to make that handle no more delaying let's go ahead and get started [Music] [Music] [Music] I did my best yesterday to do a good fit up this guard right here and polish the one side to the grip that I want which is a thousand grit and I've got a pretty tight fit up now I think I'm about ready to solder that guy on there but somebody brought up a question last time I soldered on a guard that's whether I was overheating it too much and wrecking my temper with the regular electrical solder and to be honest with you I really don't know I mean I tried to be careful with the heat but I can't be absolutely sure that I didn't kind of ruin the temper down near the tang of that blade so this time I wanted to make a change I wanted to be sure at what temperature what I'm melting is gonna be at so enter in a lead-free version of fields medal now this is really a combination of bismuth and 10 and according to the manufacturer's information on this this particular metal is supposed to melt between 290 and 300 correction 281 and 338 degrees Fahrenheit so that's still low enough that I don't think it's gonna ruin the temper because my temper does i tempered this at 450 degrees now I shouldn't have to get it anywheres near that to melt this metal [Music] so now maybe I'll just take these drips fold them in half pull them us and pliers and use this stuff [Music] [Music] yeah that might not be the best solder joint I ever made but I believe it'll get the job done and I definitely didn't blow my temper [Music] so I owe you guys a bit of an apology it's been a crazy week and I've just been doing little bits and pieces here and there where I can trying to get this handle worked on so but anyways I did a few things off-camera sorry about that but I'll show you where I'm at right now so here's kind of the general design that I am trying to finish with I finished the guard which I'm pretty sure you saw okay well you didn't see as I did a little work on this piece of antler that's supposed to go on the end and essentially all I did with this is I colored it with a little bit of black shoe polish kind of heated it up and got it got it to kind of bake in there a little bit and then wiped it with a little bit of linseed oil it's gonna be my intention at the end to cap this end with a piece of mild steel at the butt and then this is gonna be contacting either a little piece of metal on the tang or it's gonna be contacting some leather I haven't decided yet I've got this piece of leather scrap I'm gonna cut the little pieces to do the stacked leather in the middle I'm kind of planning on accenting some of that with this old piece of tin from a boiled linseed can I think that might have some nice bling-bling to go in between the bits of leather and with that accent I kind of wanted to accent it with some black some black construction paper I've used for some other projects so this is where I'm at right now and let's see what I can get accomplished today [Music] [Music] well I'm set up I'm gonna do a smaller pilot hole based on some advice from read Fred my buddy in California let's see how this goes [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] okay everyone after a lot of cutting drilling sanding fitting filing I think I've got the final mock-up already do I dare get the epoxy out okay so I'm inside now where it's a bit warmer I'm gonna go ahead and mix up this epoxy and get it all glued up the only real thing I've changed that you didn't see already as I textured the end of that Tang more with a rotary tool and a little grinder bit on it to make that hold on the epoxy but better or the antler is [Music] [Music] well it looks like I'm starting to get there with the rough but I'm getting too close to that antler and the final shape of that guard to go much further with this tool we'll see [Music] well let's take a quick inventory of where we're at this is where I'm at right now I'm pretty pleased with how this guy is looking at this point in time the blade looks good a lot of static Hamel is looking pretty good the guards looking good the antlers looking pretty good I have a couple of finishing touches I need to do on this and I both of them have their own challenges one is that pin I'm planning on putting in the antler just to make sure it has that extra level of strength needed in case this knife really gets abused a concern for that is when you go to drill the hole when you come out the other side you kind of leave an unpleasant-looking hole on the opposite side of the antler if you're not careful so I got to worry about that challenge and then how to properly secure what I'm gonna use is a steel piece of mild steel to cap the end of this antler I've never done either of these things before so we'll see what kind of challenges I have with those though anyhow I've got a piece of what I think was an old piece of galvanized steel fencing I'm not even sure and this is a piece of Ko hanger that I just clipped out they both appear to be some form of Steel they do spark a little bit when you get it on the grinder so I think they'll match what I already have they're pretty good for pins I'm probably just gonna see which one's going to match up best with the drill sizes that I have and then I'll use one of these two to pin it with so anyways let's get started with this interesting work today [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Music] finally done this guy whoo that is by far the most complicated handle that I have ever made I'm pretty happy with the results I look forward to doing things like this more in the future hopefully if you are gonna be the winner of this at the Sportsman's banquet hopefully you will appreciate the hard work that went into making this this knife in this handle I could not have done it without the advice that I got from reed fred lives in california solid brother in christ you can find him on instagram @ RW Fred he gave me little tips along the way that just helped me advance the quality of my work a lot faster than I would have just left to my own devices so I really appreciate that read you're a blessing to me brother and as for everybody else I look forward to hopefully seeing you at Sportsman's banquet alright peace out [Music]
