Spirit, Soul, Body (Part 1)

hmm a very good evening to you this evening as you can see from the title that i've written here on the board i'm going to talk about what the bible says about the spirit the soul and the body now there is again i should say unfortunately a lot of confusion among christians about the subject about the spirit the soul and the body there are many christians in fact who believe that man is not a tripartite being as it is called he's not a man or he's not a being who is made up of three parts but they believe that man is just made up of two parts that is he is made up of the spirit or soul which are used interchangeably according to them in the bible and the body so man is made up of just two parts according to many many christians and bible teachers the reason why they come to this conclusion is because they do not believe the words of god in this book the king james bible they do not believe that god has preserved all his words in one book and this one book is not their final authority for all matters of doctrine and conduct that's the reason why they come to all sorts of wrong conclusions about doctrine such as this the spirit the soul and the body but i'm going to take you to the king james bible and we are going to study together and see what the bible says about this subject the spirit the soul and the body and we are talking about the spirit soul and body of a human being now for the most part we will be looking at the spirit soul and body in a born-again christian and we are not going to right now in today's study touch on the differences between an unsaved man and a saved man and what would be the composition of an unsaved man and what would be uh you know the difference between the saved and the unsaved man we're not going to get into that today but we are going to look at a very basic uh uh doctrine of about the spirit and the soul and the body that's all we are going to do today all right so turn with me firstly in your bibles to genesis chapter 2 and verse 7. genesis chapter 2 and verse 7 and we look at what the bible says about god creating man it says in verse 7 and the lord god formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul so the bible clearly teaches firstly that man is a tripartite being a tripartite being how can we say that you look at that genesis chapter 2 and verse 7 it says god found man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul you see these are the three parts of man that we read about in genesis chapter 2 and verse 7. so it says here that he formed man of the dust of the ground and that would be the body the physical body the breath from god that entered into this dead body of man is called the breath of life and that is the spirit which of course became the spirit of man and then when the body and the spirit came together the result was that man became a living soul so this is how god formed man and he made him into a three-part being he is a body and spirit which came together to form a living soul this is the teaching of the bible and you cannot escape it people who deny that man is made up of three parts would of course go to the hebrew and the greek and try their best to pervert the words of god and they do not bring themselves on the under the authority of one book that is their problem now some of you might be wondering what difference would it make if some would agree or you know with us or if some would disagree with us on the subject of man being a three-part being well if you do not understand how god made you it would become very difficult for you to understand how god uh wants you to grow spiritually as a christian if you do not understand yourself according to what the bible says it would become difficult for you to grow as a christian spiritually and you will see that as we go further in this study but we are not basing our doctrine of the three-part being of man on just one verse in genesis chapter 2 and verse 7. look at first thessalonians chapter 5 and verse 23 first thessalonians chapter 5 and verse 23 i'm sure you're all familiar with this verse first thessalonians chapter 5 verse 23 and the very god of peace sanctify you holy and i pray god your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our lord jesus christ so look at this in first thessalonians 5 23 paul says that he wants god to sanctify you wholly that means your whole being should be sanctified and he defines what that wholly is in that verse and he calls it spirit soul and body you see that the spirit the soul and the body these three make a man whole he's complete a complete man is made up of spirit soul and body so all this nonsense about the bible using spirit and soul interchangeably is is not at all a biblical doctrine and again another reason why they get confused and think that sometimes the soul and the body are the same is because in the old testament the body and soul sometimes are used interchangeably and again i've said this in other bible studies before and i will teach on this a little bit later but it's very simple to understand in the old testament they did not experience what we call today the spiritual circumcision the dividing asunder of body and soul so the body and the uh soul clung together in the old testament that's why many times in the old testament people are called souls because their body and their soul are stuck together they are stuck to each other now that's another thing that we are going to look at a little later the lord willing but for now i want you to see that man is made up of three parts clearly and there is absolutely no mistaking this look at hebrews chapter 4 and verse 12 hebrews 4 12 it says for the word of god is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged soul piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit now if soul and spirit are used interchangeably then the writer of hebrews is greatly mistaken into thinking that the word of god divides between the spirit and the soul look at this he goes on and says and of the joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart so what does uh the bible say about man it says in hebrews as we have seen in hebrews 4 12 there is the spirit again then there is the soul and there is the body which is called the joints and marrow all three parts of a man are present and you see the word of god working to divide between the spirit and the soul and the body and it's not a lot of christians would take hebrews 4 12 figuratively and that's the greatest problem that's the greatest problem with christians when they do not understand a verse in the bible they spiritualize it or allegorize it they just wreak havoc with the scriptures with the words of god but you see the word of god is the instrument that the holy spirit uses remember the word of god is the sword of the spirit and it is with this sword that jesus christ performs a spiritual circumcision of spiritual dividing of the spirit soul and body at the moment of salvation you can read further about this in colossians chapter 2 where paul talks about the spiritual circumcision especially between the body and the soul all right so the bible clearly teaches that man is made up of three parts we see this in creation in creation we also see this in sanctification in first thessalonians 5 23 and then in hebrews of course we also see this in a spiritual uh circumcision in the division that god makes in creation in sanctification and in division we see very clearly that the bible teaches that man is made up of three distinct paths he's a spirit a soul and a body having said that now let us look at each of these parts that man is made up of let us begin with the spirit and see what the bible says about the spirit of man now i want you to understand that the spirit of man is not the same as the holy spirit the spirit is not the holy spirit do not get confused with that a lot of christians not see the difference between the human spirit and the holy spirit the bible in fact teaches that there are various kinds of spirits remember in john 4 24 the bible says god is a spirit of course in the new bibles they have removed the word a and they are put god as spirit that's wrong they speak of god is spirit as if there is just one kind of spirit in this universe no that's not how it is there are different kinds of spirits and god is a spirit angels are spirits they are called ministering spirits in the book of hebrews chapter one uh there are unclean spirits of course do you think that god who is a spirit and unclean spirits are the same no they are not god is a spirit angels are a different kind of spirit there are unclean spirits in the new testament mentioned especially which which of course we commonly call demonic spirits so evil spirits are devils as they are called in the king james bible they are different kinds of spirits now humans have different kinds of a different kind of a spirit our spirit is not the same as god who is a spirit then the bible also talks about the spirits of animals animals also have spirits but their spirits are different than the spirit of man you'll read about it in ecclesiastes chapter 3 verse 21 that animals also have a spirit so there are different kinds of spirits and you should not get confused man has a spirit but it is not or it is not the same as the holy spirit now look at romans chapter 8 verse 16 romans chapter 8 verse 16. the spirit itself in the king james bible the word spirit there is a with a capital s it says the spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit you see the difference there the spirit of god and our spirit that we are the children of god so the bible clearly says that there is a spirit god is a spirit you have god then uh angels angels are spirit beings basically though they can assume uh physical form then you have unclean spirits you have human spirits you have animal spirits and in this verse that we have just read in romans chapter 8 and verse 16 there is a clear differentiation between uh the holy spirit and the human spirit the spirit that is the holy spirit bears witness with our spirit these are two different spirits altogether look at also first corinthians chapter 2 and verse 11 first corinthians chapter 2 verse 11 for what man knoweth the things of a man save the spirit of man which is in him that's the first thing look at the next part of the verse even so the things of god knoweth no man but the spirit of god you see that again the differentiation between the spirit of a man and the spirit of god they are not the same and you should never get confused between the two we have seen that god formed man out of the dust of the ground that is he formed his body and he breathed into the dead body the breath of life which is spirit but when god did that that spirit or that breath that god breathed into the body of adam became man's spirit adam's spirit well it's no longer god's spirit but it is man's spirit it became the spirit of man look at job chapter 33 and we'll read verse 4 job 33 verse 4 the spirit of god hath made me and the breath of the almighty had given me life so the bible is very clear that the spirit of god certainly was there in creation as we read in genesis chapter 1 verses 2 onwards the spirit of god certainly was involved in the act of creation but the spirit that entered man was the breath of god the breath of god entered man and man became a living soul so you can say that when the body and the spirit which is the breath of god came together they became one to create the soul of this human being and man became a living soul the spirit of god had made me and the bread of the all my breath of the almighty had given me life man became a living soul through the breath that entered into the body all right so a lot of christians say when they don't understand this whole thing that we teach about the king james bible we say that this english translation of the scriptures which was made in 1611 is the perfectly preserved infallible inerrant word of god which consists all the words of god that he has preserved for all mankind when we say this they don't understand they say how can it be how can this be are you saying that this english is as inspired or as preserved as the original hebrew and greek yes in fact i would say this english is much better than the hebrew and the greek that's true i'm not joking that's the truth god has given more advanced revelation in this 1611 king james bible than he has ever given in the original hebrew or the greek firstly you don't have the originals anymore what you have are copies but you see god promised to preserve all his words and give them to us and he kept his promise now you see when they translated this bible god of course superintended the translation he guided the translators in such a way that they chose the right words to translate the hebrew and the greek all right but that's not all god put his breath upon this book just as he put his breath in adam he put his breath in this book so that just as adam became a living soul this book is quick and powerful quick means hebrews 4 12 right we have read it quick means alive this book is alive this king james bible is alive because the breath of god is in it and god does the same thing with every pure word of god in every language in the world not the corrupt versions which were translated from corrupt manuscripts i'm talking about the pure word of god especially the pure word of god that came out into the world during the time of the reformation now of course that's not our subject i know but i can't resist saying something like this because of the apostasy among christians we need to continually impress upon the minds and hearts of the christian the importance of this great doctrine of the preservation of the words of god because this book and only this book can fight the apostasy among christians today and you want your heart to be safe from apostasy you need to be reminded of this great truth that this book is our final authority and this book is the final authority for all matters of faith and practice so if you believe that god has preserved all his words in one book in this book and you place yourself under its authority then you will see that god can work in your life and build you up as a christian into a mature christian all right having said that now you see god put his spirit his breath upon man and man became a living soul so the life of man is the spirit that is inside of the man in other words if the spirit leaves the body the man dies the body dies look at james chapter 2 james chapter 2 and verse 26 james chapter 2 and verse 26. this is what james says for as the body without the spirit is dead so faith without works is dead also do you see that the body without the spirit is dead when the spirit leaves the body the body dies and the soul leaves the body and goes away so the spirit becomes man's spirit firstly it is no longer the spirit of god or the breath of god it is man's spirit and this spirit is his life this is what keeps the body alive now there's something else about the spirit the spirit is not just some uh substance that just floats around inside of you there is the bible says a lot about the spirit in fact the spirit of man is connected to his mind the spirit of man is connected to his mind and remember we are talking specifically about the born-again christian look at first corinthians chapter 2 and verse 11. first corinthians chapter 2 and verse 11 for what man knoweth the things of a man save the spirit of man which is in him even so the things of god knoweth no man but the spirit of god now look at this when paul talks about the spirit of man and the spirit of god there is one particular thing he's talking about he's talking about knowledge do you see that he's talking about knowledge he says the spirit of man knows the things of man and the spirit of god knows the things of god so the mind is certainly especially the the mind of the born-again christian is connected to the spirit now i know that it is the soul of the man which actually has the intellect the emotions and the volition the intelligence that a man possesses is in the soul the the the volition the will of a man is in the soul the affections or the emotions of a man are in the soul but at the same time the spirit is certainly connected to that mind of man which is again to do with the soul so there is a very close connection between the spirit and soul in this particular matter of knowledge of knowing of the mind not just that there are many many verses which talk about this let me show you a few verses look at ephesians chapter 4 and verse 23 ephesians 4 23. and be renewed in the spirit of your mind the mind seems to be having a spirit of its own there is a connection between the spirit and the mind in some way and he says be renewed in the spirit of your mind now the best example is found in two verses in the book of romans look at romans chapter 1 and verse 9 romans 1 9 for god is my witness whom i serve with my spirit in the gospel of his son that without ceasing i make mention of you always in my prayers so here paul says that he serves god in the spirit so he's serving god in the spirit not the holy spirit in my spirit he says whom i serve with my spirit in the gospel paul says he serves god in his spirit now look at romans chapter 7 and verse 25 romans 7 25 it says i thank god through jesus christ our lord so then with the mind i serve the law of god now here he says he serves god with his mind so there seems to be a connection between the spirit and the mind and paul serves god with his spirit or with his mind there is a connection between these two things now why am i saying this it's important because the mind of the born-again christian is not the same as the mind of an unsaved person what is the difference remember paul says we have the mind of christ the moment you're saved the holy spirit comes to indwell you and you have been given the mind of christ whether you exercise it or not that's a different story but certainly you have been given the mind of the lord jesus christ we will look at a little bit more about the spirit and its functions a little later maybe not today but in another bible study because we may continue studying on the subject a little bit more in the days to come so the basic things i want you to know about the spirit are these that firstly the spirit that we have is not the holy spirit it is our human spirit secondly that this human spirit is our life as long as the spirit is inside of us we remain alive when the spirit leaves us we die the third thing is that the spirit is connected to our mind the human spirit now you're going to look at how the holy spirit works upon the human spirit a little later in this bible study we look at that and how the holy spirit uh helps the spirit to influence the soul to be in subjection to god to the holy scriptures to the holy spirit and to our own spirit where this work of the holy spirit is being carried on so that we may in turn bring the body into subjection we look at all those things but right now these are the three most important things for you to keep in mind now let us look at what the bible says about the soul the soul of man now the soul as i've said is a combination of the body and spirit when the spirit and the body came together man became a living soul the soul is a combination of the body and spirit you must keep this in mind and the soul the bible teaches us is the seat of the man's personality when we say i we are referring to our soul not just to our body because we really are our souls not the body now this is not what other religions teach and other religious scriptures teach other religious scriptures cannot look inside the way we do in the scriptures and the reason for that the author of this book is god himself god who created us he knows us and he has given us a description of how he has made us and what are the different parts into which he has made us so that's why the other religions always focus on the outward part the body that's what they can see of course they also focus on the mind because they can in their unsaved conditions still use their minds to the best of their abilities so their focus is on the body and the mind but you see the bible gives us a far greater insight into what a man is made up of and the personality is the soul when i say i i'm talking about my soul this body may die but i don't die i'm still alive even after this body is dead correct so that's why we say the soul is the seat of personality and as i've said the intellect emotion volition all three belong to our personality to the soul now the soul needs the spirit's help to do certain things in a born-again christian again i'm talking about a born-again christian without the help of the spirit inside the soul cannot do certain things what are those things the first thing is the soul needs the spirit's help to know god as a born-again christian why is it that unsaved people cannot know god in their natural condition in their fallen condition it's because they are born with a dead spirit and that part of man which is able to commune with god is dead that's why they cannot know god but once you are saved once you are born again it is through the help of the spirit that you begin to know god as you read the scriptures you you understand who god is the more you spend time with that book the more you know god so without the help of the spirit man's spirit you can never know god in your soul because the soul is the natural part of the born-again christian like clarence larkin so clearly puts it it's beautiful he says the body is the carnal part of the christian the soul is the natural part of the christian and the spirit is the spiritual part of the christian now don't get confused the natural part inside of us is the soul it's not the same as what paul talks about when he says the natural man that is a reference to an unsaved person a natural man but we are not natural we are saved all right we are spiritual as long as we allow the spirit to be in control the human spirit we look at that so the spirit that the soul needs the help of the spirit in order to know god in order to know god's will let me show you a few verses to show you what i'm saying look at john chapter 3 gospel of john chapter 3 and we'll read verse 5. john 3 5. i'm sure you're familiar with this verse jesus answered verily verily i say unto thee except a man be born of water and of the spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of god of course again this verse is one of the most misunderstood verses in the bible one of the most perverted verses in the bible one of those verses over which many denominations have sent scores millions in fact of people to hell in the last two thousand years because with this words they teach that in order for you to be born again you need to have water baptism or you need to be baptized in water and if you are a bible believing christian you know that's nonsense water has nothing to do with our salvation let me just say this you cannot depend on anything physical in this world for your spiritual life except this book all right baptism lord stable if you think you'll grow spiritually if you depend on those things well you can be really deceived the other day i heard a bible-believing preacher say that he practices foot washing and he said when he does that oh the feeling is so holy and so humbling you see depending on physical things to grow spiritually or to have a spiritual experience is dangerous extremely dangerous don't ever do that so you know if you're a bible believing christian that water baptism cannot save you and the next verse verse 6 of john chapter 3 says that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the spirit is spirit so jesus christ here clearly defines what this water is water he says in verse 5. and the spirit the spirit of course is the holy spirit no doubt about that the water here is described in verse 6 that which is born of the flesh is flesh so the water is a reference to your first birth which is your physical birth remember in your mother's womb you are there in water your first birth is a water birth your second birth if you're born again is a spirit birth and this is the holy spirit which gives you the new birth all right what is this new birth jesus said be you must be born again and nicodemus immediately understands in the natural sense and says how can i go into my mother's womb and be born again correct so jesus says no no i'm not talking about a second physical birth you're already born once now you must be born again that part of you which is dead should be born again what part of you is dead it's your spirit it's your spirit which is dead from your birth and that must be born again now look at uh first corinthians chapter six first corinthians chapter six and verse 17. first corinthians chapter 6 and verse 17 but he that is joined unto the lord is one spirit so when you are born again through the work of the holy spirit what god does is that he takes your human spirit and joins it to himself you see in the new birth your spirit becomes one or joined with god inside your body not somewhere in heaven or somewhere else but this work of coming together of your spirit and the lord happens inside of you now look at first corinthians chapter 2 chapter 2 and verse 16. for who hath known the mind of the lord that he may instruct him but we have the mind of christ so in all these verses this is what i want you to see that the soul needs the spirit's help to know god without the spirit self you can never know god your spirit is dead but at the new birth your spirit comes alive and in your spirit which has been joined to the holy spirit you begin to know god how is it through the holy spirit that's how you have the mind of christ not that god has removed your mind and has put in the mind of christ in its place that's not how it works your mind is there but you see your spirit is joined to the lord your spirit is joined to the lord that's why in your spirit you can know god firstly and secondly you can know god's will again of course that depends on whether your soul is in subjection to the spirit or to the body if it is in subjection to the spirit that's where everything spiritual works inside of you so i don't want you to get confused be very clear about this you're born again through the holy spirit the holy spirit gives a new birth to your dead spirit all right that's the first thing and then the second thing is that he that is joined unto the lord is one spirit you're joined to the lord your spirit and the lord become one inside of you and that's how you have the mind of christ inside of you and if your soul is in subjection to your spirit you certainly can begin to exercise the mind of christ and you will know not only who god is and understand god as he reveals himself to you more and more as you keep growing but you also begin to know god's will a lot of christians talk about god's will and i know that a lot of christians are very sincere they love god and they want to do god's will but they have no clue as to how they can know and do god's will you must be able to see this that unless you're living in the spirit not just you know of course paul says walk in the spirit that is the holy spirit and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh you depend on the holy spirit completely to live a holy life but what i'm saying is that you operate in a subjection to your human spirit where god is working that's when you will be a spiritual christian who will know god who will know god's will for your life but not only does the soul need the help of the spirit to know god and to know god's will but the soul needs the spirit's help to worship god and to do the will of god in a christian's life let me explain a little bit further what i'm saying look at john chapter 4 and verse 24 john chapter 4 and verse 24 god is a spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth look at the verse carefully god is a spirit spirit with a capital s and if you want to worship him how do you worship him who are you you are the soul remember that how can the soul worship him the soul can only worship god in spirit and in your king james bible that spirit the second time is a spirit with a small s lower case s god is a spirit and you can only worship him in your spirit without the help of the spirit there can be no worshiping of god look at this clearly illustrated in luke chapter 1 luke chapter 1 verses 46 and 47. luke chapter 1 verses 46 and 47 and mary said my soul that magnify the lord and my spirit hath rejoiced in god my savior this is that so-called magnificat mary is magnifying god but look at the two tenses in this verse in these two verses firstly she says my soul dot magnify present tense this is the present tense now look at the next verse verse uh sorry wes 45 uh where is that 47 i'm sorry verse 47 and my spirit hath rejoiced my spirit hath rejoiced do you see this this death here is the present tense and hath here is past tense first her spirit rejoiced in the past tense and only then was a soul able to magnify the lord that is the order god's work is in the spirit and depending upon the spirit the soul is able to worship god so without the help of the spirit there can be no true worship of god that's why jesus said god is a spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit small spirit small s in spirit and truth almost every time you hear pastors using that verse lord we come to worship you today in spirit and truth what do they mean they have absolutely no clue what they are talking about they think firstly that worshipping god in the spirit is to worship him in the holy spirit and that's what the charismatics will tell you oh you must worship in the spirit you must pray in the spirit you must dance in the spirit you must speak in tongues and the spirit and all that there it is worshiping god in your spirit the human spirit and in truth because god reveals himself to you in your spirit god has joined to yourself in your spirit all right not your soul it's your spirit that's the only place where god can work inside of a believer so without this work of god inside your spirit your soul cannot know god your soul cannot know god's will your soul cannot worship god and your soul cannot do the will of god or bring your body into subjection to do the will of god without this work of god inside your spirit we have already read ephesians chapter 4 verse 23 where paul says and be renewed in the spirit of your mind now look at romans chapter 12 and verse 2 romans chapter 12 and verse 2 and be not conformed to the world to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of god you see how the renewing of the mind is connected to the doing of god's will that you may prove what is that good acceptable and perfect will of god and i already told you that your mind is connected to the spirit so when you are renewed in your mind when your spirit is renewed it is strengthened that's when you can do what is that good perfect will of god acceptable perfect will of god so without the spirit and the work of god inside your human spirit your soul is helpless to know god or to worship god or to do the will of god but the thing is you see though the soul needs the help of the spirit in order to do all this it is ultimately the soul which possesses the ability to choose volition is a part of the soul remember i said in the beginning intellect emotions or affections volition or will all three of these elements belong to the soul so it is the soul which decides whether it will listen to the spirit and worship god and do the will of god and know god through the scriptures or whether it will listen to its body and do according to the dictates of the flesh the decision is yours your souls your personality that's where you decide whether you will follow the spirit or the flesh look at first corinthians chapter three and verse one first corinthians chapter three verse one and i brethren could not speak unto you as unto spiritual but as unto carnal even as unto babes in christ so here paul mentions spiritual and cardinal christians by the way there are some super spiritual christians out there who call themselves king james bible believers you know you talk to them you see an arrogance in them you see a pride in them you see a a sort of an ego in them which really surprises you you know what the problem with them is self-righteousness terrible self-righteousness and what they teach is that if a born-again christian continues to commit sins he was never saved to begin with that's exactly what they teach you know why they teach that firstly because they don't understand the doctrine of the two natures of a born-again christian they don't have any clue about that secondly if anyone just because they do not do some of the things that some weaker christians do they would label them as unsaved people you see the self-righteousness so when they say when you know a christian who keeps committing sins is not saved they are saying i don't commit such sins that immediately reeks of self-righteousness i'm saved i know i'm born again how do you know i don't sin and if you probe a little bit deeper they say i have uh the confirmation in my own spirit which the spirit of god gives remember paul said the spirit of god bears witness with our spirit they say i have that and if you tell them look that person who's keep you know who keeps falling into sin he also has that same witness of the holy spirit and his spirit they'll say no he cannot have it he cannot because he's doing these horrible sins you see how immature foolish ignorant they are don't put up with such people for a moment don't those are immature childish christians babes in christ you know as paul is talking about so here paul clearly says talking to born-again christians he says i cannot talk to you as spiritual but as cardinal why carnal is fleshly right the reason for that is because the soul in these christians is not in subjection to their spirit but it is in subjection to the flesh that's why they don't see that it's the soul that decides whether it follows the spirit which is connected to the lord attached to the lord it is one spirit with the lord or to the flesh which always uh keeps trying to bring the soul into subjection so that the soul becomes a worldly fleshly uh thing that's what this the the flesh ones and these christians don't see this they don't see this at all they don't see this war that is going on inside a born-again christian between the spirit and the flesh they don't see that they immediately say just because a christian is weak and he has not become really strong and he keeps falling into sin they say he was never saved to begin with that is nonsense a born-again christian you know they call it living in sin right a very unbiblical way of putting it living in sin they say oh if a christian is living in sin he was never born again to begin with don't put up with this nonsense rebuke these people sharply when they teach these things the bible is very clear that a born-again christian is capable of committing the same kind of sins the same number of times as a an unsaved person a christian who a born-again christian who's been sealed by the holy spirit can yes live in sin as they call it living in sin and die in that backslidden condition why do you think the bible says if you walk after the flesh he shall die why does the bible say that you see a born-again christian can walk after the flesh and what would god do he would cut short his life that's the punishment he he doesn't lose his salvation nor does god say oh you were never saved to begin with that's why you were walking after the flesh no he's a born again christian he's walking after the flesh god cut shorts his life remember what paul said in 1st corinthians 11 there are many who partake in the lord's table unworthily that's why many of you are weak many of you are sick and many of you sleep when christians so-called you know live in sin that's what happens god cuts short their life so you must understand that there is this war between the spirit and the flesh to have dominion over the soul and the soul decides to whom it will be in subjection if it's in subjection to the spirit then you'll be a spiritual christian but if you're subject to the flesh then you'll be a carnal christian upon again christian but carnal now look at uh another words that i would like to show you to understand that the soul uh can truly choose to be either in subjection to the spirit or to the soul or or to the flesh now brethren just because i said that you know you have to rebuke some of these brethren sharply who teach that nonsense that if a christian continues to sin he was never saved to begin with i'm not saying get into debates with them and you know have a big thing about this not like that but you just need to show them that they are self-righteous and what they are teaching is not according to the scriptures just as in other doctrines you are very particular you must be very particular in this doctrine as well because the bible teaches this so clearly that the soul decides whether it'll be in subjection to the spirit or to the flesh a weak christian will be in subjection to the flesh but when a christian spends more time with this book and prayer then he will learn to be in subjection to the spirit that spirit where god works that spirit which is connected to the mind of christ that spirit through which you are one with the lord and then you will see that you'll be a spiritual christian it's as simple as that so don't go saying to people who fall into sin that they have never saved to begin with don't say that a born-again christian as i've said can commit the same kinds of sins that an unsaved person would comment it is the grace of god that we have not done those things if you have not done those things yet it is the grace of god and it's because you're spending time with god in prayer and with the word of god that's the only reason god is keeping you from doing such sins you leave that you become a cardinal christian you're capable of doing anything you're still saved remember what paul said in the corinthian church there was a saved man who was living with his father's wife committing incest what does paul say about such a person he says commit that person to the devil to the devil so that he would be punished in the flesh but his spirit would be saved so that he himself would be saved he would escape there will be punishment for the sins that a born-again christian comments here on the earth there will be punishment from god the flesh will be destroyed but you see he's a born-again christian his spirit has been renewed by the holy spirit his soul has been sealed by the holy spirit he can never go to hell and you cannot say he was never saved to begin with a christian can commit scandalous sins very very terrible sins and still be a born-again christian i'm not saying go and do whatever you want you're saved you cannot lose your salvation so go do the dirtiest things you can i'm not saying that you know if you think that's what i'm teaching then you're a fool that's not what i'm saying that's not what the bible teaches paul says shall we sin that grace may abound he says emphatically god forbid no you cannot sin just because where there is sin the grace of god abounds you can't take grace as a license to sin you cannot do that there will be consequences for that but this is the thing the soul decides if the spirit or the body will rule all right the decision is in the hands of the soul but there is something else i want to say about the soul the human soul and this i want to say specifically about the soul of unsaved people the souls of unsaved people the soul also can rule the body all right now i've said that earlier in the born-again christian the struggle is between the spirit and the flesh to gain control of the flesh and the soul decides sorry to gain control of the soul and the soul decides whether it will obey the spirit or the flesh but you see the soul can also do something else the soul can rule over the body it can ignore the spirit whether you know if it's a born-again christian it can ignore the spirit and rule over the body if it's not a born-again christian the soul anyway the spirit is dead so the soul can still rule over the body and you see this among two kinds of unsaved people especially the first kind are those who live a morally upright life right because they believe doing good works will lead them to salvation i don't know if you're living in some western country maybe you don't see that so much but here in asia you see that a lot there are people who believe that if they do good works and live a morally a bright life a clean life you know they would go to heaven that they would be saved and they actually live a very good life morally you can't find a lot of falls in such people they live very good lives how is that possible this that is the soul ruling over the body the flesh keeps telling them do this do that do this dirty thing do that dirty thing but they rule over the flesh with their soulish strength and they bring the body into subjection see the problem is that the spirit is still dead no matter how good you are no matter how good your works are your spirit is dead so you can never know the one true living god who created you but that's how it is with some unsaved people their souls rule the body and they live good lives clean lives then there's the second group of unsaved people whose souls rule the body and in order for them to do that they use what is called yoga and meditation born again christians you need to be extremely careful about these two yoga and meditation i have seen born-again christians practice yoga under the pretext of yoga being just a way to control your breathing or a way to exercise or a way to lose weight and be healthy and all sorts of things it's got to do with your soul ruling over your body it can sever that connection between the spirit and the soul in a born-again christian if you engage in yoga and meditation why do they do yoga they do yoga it's a a form of course they have their own definitions for it but we know that yoga is used so that the soul can rule over the body so that the body can be brought into subjection of course they don't talk about the soul they talk they talk about the mind so they talk about how the the mind can be used to bring the body into subjection through this yoga and meditation is used to introspect to go inside and find yourself that means you see it's all to do with the soul do you see that in yoga and meditation what you're trying to do basically is give importance to your soul and of course there are many other reasons why you should not engage or practice these two things first thing is it is dangerous for you to try to get inside yourself and try to look into yourself because they believe that that's where god is right they say oh look inside god is inside of you that's a perversion of the biblical teaching of god inside of us god is inside of us not from birth naturally no god comes to reside in us the moment we trust jesus christ as our savior unless you believe that your sins have been paid for by the death and resurrection of jesus christ by the shed blood of jesus christ god's not going to come and dwell inside of you you cannot find god inside of you it's a very dangerous thing to do and uh you will leave yourself open to the attacks of evil spirits if you try to look inside don't take verses like where paul says you know let a man examine him himself and then partake of the table or examine yourself to see whether you are in the faith don't take such verses to say that you know you're going to introspect and look inside of yourself and all that don't do that those verses are talking about something else altogether but in yoga and meditation you're going inside yourself trying to find god and if you're an unsaved man there is no god there there is no god so the these things can really become very dangerous especially if you're a born-again christian your doctor may suggest it your friends and family may suggest that you know if you do this you will lose a certain physical condition that you have don't do it don't do it these things have not come to us from a natural study of god's creation yoga i'm talking about yoga and meditation they are not like medicine where you learn how to heal a person through uh studying the things god has made it's not like that these are knowledge these kind of things are knowledge that has come to mankind through the fallen angels so you must be a bit careful about these things so the soul can rule over the body and in order to do that there are two ways they do it the first is of course they practice severe penance sometimes and try their best to just do good things with their willpower with their soul power the second way to do it for the soul to rule of the body is to do yoga and meditation these are dangerous things to do as i've said and you must be very very careful about it so here you have what the bible says now remember i'm only looking at the very basic things about the spirit soul and body and this is what the bible says about the spirit the the soul that we have seen so far and now we look at what the bible says about the body i hope so far you have been able to understand that the different roles of the spirit and the soul the spirit is that part of you which is born again and the spirit is that part of you where god dwells and where you worship god where you know god all right and the spirit should rule inside a born-again christian because it is the spirit of man that is joined unto the lord your one spirit with the lord it's there that god works so your soul should be brought into subjection to the spirit and then your soul should bring the body into subjection to the spirit that's god's way of doing it in the christian's life but sometimes that's not the order we find inside of us we see the flesh ruling we see the soul in subjection to the flesh and that's why it's important that we know a little bit about the flesh as well and see what the bible says about it now the body that we have as i have said this body is not us it's part of us but it's certainly not the body that defines a human being the body is the soul's instrument keep that in mind the body is the soul's instrument to help interact with the physical world this world around us is a physical world and the soul needs a physical body to interact with the physical world so that's why the body is the soul's instrument and the soul uses it to interact with the physical uh world that's why the body our bodies are physical in nature the soul is not physical the body is certainly physical in nature uh the the body gives the soul world consciousness right it's very simple to understand when you look at it like this the spirit gives you god consciousness the soul gives you self-consciousness and the body gives you world consciousness it helps you to interact with the world how does the body help the soul to interact with the world through the five senses that god has given us right sight smell hearing taste what's the other one touch all these things these five senses are the medium through which the soul interacts with the physical world so the body is the soul's instrument but the thing is you need to understand that the body is yet unredeemed that's important to know the body of even the born-again christian is unredeemed now look at romans romans chapter 8 verse 23 romans 8 23 and not only they but ourselves also which have the first fruits of the spirit even we ourselves grown within ourselves waiting for the adoption to it the redemption of our body what is paul saying paul is saying that i am waiting for the redemption of my body that's very strange you thought when we got saved all of us got saved i mean every part of us got saved no that's not how it is remember what i've said the spirit insiders is regenerated or born again the soul which is sealed by the holy spirit is saved the soul is saved the spirit is born again but the body is yet unredeemed that's why if the lord tarries every born-again christian will die we die physically because the body is yet unredeemed and that's why the bible talks so much about bringing this body into subjection to the spirit you should not be a cardinal christian allowing the body to rule over the soul but you should be a spiritual christian whose soul and body are brought into subjection to the spirit remember what paul says in romans chapter 12 and verse 1 romans 12 1 i beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of god that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice holy acceptable unto god which is your reasonable service this unredeemed part of you the body should be given as a living sacrifice have you heard preachers or christians say oh you must give your life as a living sacrifice i've heard literally heard preachers saying that should give your life as a living sacrifice so god is not asking for your life he's saying that you present your bodies your bodies a living sacrifice it's your body that is unredeemed and it is your body that must be brought into subjection because it is unredeemed it will cause you to sin and to go away from god that's why it should be brought into subjection now look at what paul says in first corinthians i think chapter 9 yeah first corinthians chapter 9 verse 27 but i keep under my body and bring it into subjection lest that by any means when i have preached to others i myself should be a cast away so very clearly paul says that he keeps his body under that means under control and brings his body into subjection subjection to the spirit you see it's so clear here in this verse paul is saying i try to regulate the activities of my soul and my body according to what god teaches me in my spirit god's connection with you is in the spirit that's where he reveals himself to you that's where he speaks to you and reveals his will to you that's where he strengthens you all of god's work is inside your spirit and your soul when it is in subjection to the spirit will regulate the activities of the body according to the dictates of the spirit inside of you and paul says i bring my body under the new perversions in the english language have changed this verse to say but i beat my body to teach the abominable roman catholic doctrine of extreme penance right they beat themselves till they bleed in order to you know do penance that's not what the bible says paul says i keep my body under i keep under my body and bring it into subjection not by beating it but by first letting this the soul be in subjection to the spirit and together they bring the body into subjection now this body as i've said is yet unredeemed but in our resurrection body or in our glorified body the essential nature of our bodies would be spiritual once again all right so once you die and rise again at the rapture of the church when you're resurrected or at the rapture when you're given a glorified body you're changed right and this mortal will put on immortality this uh natural body will be changed into a glorious body like unto the body of the lord jesus christ then the essential nature of your body also becomes spiritual let me show you a couple of verses look at first corinthians chapter 15 verse 44 first corinthians chapter 15 and verse 44. it is sown a natural body it is raised a spiritual body there is a natural body and there is a spiritual body when it dies it dies as a natural body in its unredeemed condition okay but when it is raised up paul says it has raised a spiritual body and your body will be just like the body of the lord jesus christ in philippians chapter 3 and verse 21 paul puts this out very clearly philippians 3 21 who shall change our wild body that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body according to the working whereby he's able even to subdue all things unto himself he subdues your body in such a way that he transforms it and fashions it like unto his glorious body the glorious body of the lord jesus christ why is it that christians when they read the bible don't notice these things they just do such a cursive reading of the scriptures and they don't believe the things that are written there so they never learn these things when jesus rose from the dead he was not like some spirit floating in the air remember he said to thomas touch me and see i'm not a spirit a spirit doesn't have flesh and bones he says he shows him the marks of his wounds right and he eats food in his resurrected condition or in his resurrected state he eats fish with the disciples without the necessity to digest that food or eliminate it wonderful it's a real body that he possess he could eat food with it how real could it get but it's such a wonderful body that he could go through walls and closed doors that's the nature of the spiritual body the resurrected body the glorious body that we are about to receive remember what john says also in his episode he says uh i don't know about uh uh you know this but i know one thing he says i know that when we see him we shall be like him that's right praise god a body will no longer be in subjection to sin now in this life even though we are born again there is sin in the flesh that's why there is a need to give us a glorified body a body which has no sin in it now there's so much we can talk about in this correction i've just given you only some very very basic things uh on the spirit soul and body very basic things now there are a few more things that i would like to teach you but not today the lord willing this coming sunday morning uh indian time that is uh 9 30 we will have a bible study and there we will continue talking about the spirit soul and body and some other very interesting and important things but today this is what i wanted to show you that firstly man is a tripartite being he's made up of three parts the scriptures clearly show us that the second thing is we have seen a basic uh uh study or we have done a basic study of the spirit soul and body their different uh aspects their different functions and what god has purposed for the spirit soul and body and i hope you are able to follow these things and i hope and pray that you will spend more time digging deeper into the word of god and trying to learn and see what the bible says about these things because as i've spent said earlier your spiritual growth certainly depends on understanding how god made you and understanding the different functions of the spirit soul and body a lot of spiritual deception among christians is there because they don't understand this and sometimes born again christians get demon possessed yes born again christians can get demon possessed no matter what they have taught you that's the truth all right and they get that because they don't understand what the bible says about themselves and how they can be careful not to allow any evil spirits to have any entrance into their bodies all right so i hope and pray that the lord will help you to continue to study and understand these things but i want to say this to anyone who is watching this today and who has never trusted jesus christ as their personal savior i want to say this if you have heard this you have understood that your body is unredeemed but also your spirit is dead you're born with a dead spirit and you can never know god with a dead spirit all the good works that you do you're doing with the help or in the strength of your soul and the bible says that your good works and your righteousnesses are as filthy rags before god god will never ever accept what you do through the power of your soul you may use yoga you may use meditation you may use good works you may do a lot of things which are nice but they will never give you a standing before god they will never make you acceptable to god they can never save your soul the reason for that is because all these good things that you do and the power of the soul that you use to bring your body into subjection is not something that makes you holy the bible says god is holy and in order for you to be accepted by god in order for you to go to heaven you need to be as holy as god or else you'll have absolutely no entrance into heaven but you see the fact is that god is willing to make you holy you cannot make yourself holy the bible in fact says that you're a sinner the bible says all have sinned for all have sinned and come short of the glory of god and the bible says that the wages of sin is death you're a sinner your good works can never give you a standing with god and because you're a sinner one day you're going to die you're dead spiritually already right you're dead spiritually but one day you're going to die physically and not only at that moment when you die physically but the bible says that you will be cast into the lake of fire where you will burn forever and ever and that is the second death death is not just spiritual death death is not just physical in that you die and your body will go to the grave but there is an eternal death that the bible talks about and that is hell and there your soul will burn forever and ever but you see you don't have to go to that horrible place called hell because god doesn't want you to go there and god has made a provision which if you receive and accept as a free gift from god you will be pardoned of all your sins you will be given a new life to live here on this earth your as i've said your sins are forgiven you're born again you're given a new life a new beginning and you're given a new destination you will live with god forever when jesus christ comes back or if you die before that you will live with jesus christ forever you say what is this provision this provision that god has made for your sinful condition is his son jesus christ jesus christ the son of god yes he is the righteousness of god and the bible says that jesus christ died for your sins according to the scriptures he shed his blood to pay the penalty for your sins he became your substitute when he was crucified upon the cross in other words he took your place and he paid the penalty for your sins the bible says he became sin for us who knew no sin the holy sinless son of god came to pay the prize for your sins and he did it by shedding his own blood upon the cross he was you know he died on that cross he was buried and he was under the earth for three days and three nights and then he rose up from the dead according to the scriptures that's right he rose up again from the dead and the bible says that if you believe this that jesus died in your place the just for the unjust and if you believe that he was buried and rose up again you trust his blood to be the payment for your sins you trust him to be the sacrifice for your sins you believe that he died and rose up again you will be saved he comes to dwell inside of you and as i have said before jesus christ is the righteousness of god and he indwelling you makes you acceptable and righteous before god god looks at you and says he doesn't look at you as a sinner anymore because of his son jesus christ inside of you because of his righteousness inside of you he declares you righteous not just say you know okay i find that you're not guilty not just that but he says you're righteous now in my eyes and all this is possible only by faith in the lord jesus christ you must believe that jesus died for your sins and rose up again you must confess jesus christ with your mouth that he is indeed the one who did all this for you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth the lord jesus christ if you do that the bible says you will be saved there is no other name given in this world under heaven by which a man may be saved but the name of jesus christ so that the bible says believe on the lord jesus christ and thou shalt be saved you must believe that jesus christ who is who he claimed to be and did all this for you and you will be given not just eternal life which which you will spend with jesus christ forever and ever but even in this life that you now live here on the earth you will be given a new beginning to your life you will experience a new peace and joy which you did not enjoy before a new strength to overcome sin as i've been teaching today on the subject of spirit soul and body a new strength to overcome sin a new direction to your life a new meaning to your life and all this is possible by trusting jesus christ as your savior my prayer is that you will trust him as your savior and that you will trust him right now without delaying and if you do that if you are believing in your heart then just pray and say lord i believe i believe the best i know how that jesus christ is my savior that he has died for my sins was buried and rose up again forgive me my sins wash me in the blood of jesus christ make me your child that's all you need to do i'm not saying that your prayer saves you it's your faith that saves you you must believe in your heart but once you believe you express that faith to god in prayer may the lord bless you as i have said the lord willing we will
