in America today it's hard to ensure that there are a variety of perspectives in the classroom that's why the Cato Institute created the sphere education initiatives a program that works with Educators to defuse today's environment of partisan tribalism preserve the future of our liberal democracy the rule of law and the idea of a free Society as well as bring facts and reason back to the classroom I think my students are afraid their minds a lot of time for fear of backlash what we are lacking is really having civil discuss especially with everything that social media is showing us and so in the classroom the students replicate what they see on TV and what they see at home I think that right now in education there's a lot of shutdown of ideas that maybe somebody disagrees with and so that becomes difficult in the classroom Cato is uniquely positioned to succeed with sphere education initiatives due to our steadfast adherence to Independence non-partisanship and integrity that enables us to work across ideological lines to affect change what Cato has done in putting the sphere Institute together is critical for the future of our citizenship and only through it being exposed to this information will they be able to move our country forward in you know Liberty freedom and justice for all it is a place that cherishes rigorous conversation from every point of the political Spectrum I found my own views present in the room I also found myself challenged to engage with views that weren't my own I have actually become more open I love it just kind of opens up my point of view to different topics my students have benefited because they've been able to have conversations they wouldn't normally have in their like safe bubble it's a great place to share ideas with colleagues throughout the whole time that you're here and you meet other people share your ideas you may not always agree but you know what it doesn't matter because everybody gets along so they're doing two things they're making me a better educator by making me a better thinker they're also expanding my classroom by giving me curriculum that I can immediately take back into the classroom and implement it I'm telling you sphere has got it right sphere teachers represent a wide variety of subject areas School types and ideological backgrounds but what they have in common is a passion for civil discourse in helping their students engage in a wide variety of challenging conversations from a variety of ideological viewpoints I would say that coming World politically around me a lot better than I previously did I've been to lots of professional development in my life but this is by far and away the best professional development that I'm able to participate in it's an amazing opportunity it's an amazing program and so I just really recommend anybody any teacher to come here and do it [Music]
