hello hello my name is Elena I am a K-5 special education teacher in the great state of Iowa and this is my first classroom setup vlog [Music] I am obviously in my car not in my classroom right now and I'm actually not even headed to my classroom right at this very moment I am actually headed uh to a training I've been a part of a three-day training this week to become a trainer for CPI for our school district I'm doing a three-day training for that and we have to take our test for it in the afternoon and for whatever reason the company is not paying for my trainer right now to have internet at the hotel where we are doing this when we take this test we're all gonna have to go somewhere else to get internet so my plan is that when I need to go take that test I'm just gonna go to my school and take it at my school and start the process of classroom setup actually my ninth year teaching so it's not a brand new classroom setup we did have new carpet installed this summer and as teachers know you have to clear things off your walls and make sure that they can do all the summer cleaning so there will be a setup and I'm putting the classroom back together one thing that I haven't mentioned yet either is that I am a behavior special education teacher and what that means is that I have a more specialized program for students who have more intense Behavior so they are actually only nine students on my roster for this upcoming school year they all have some very intense needs I do their academic and behavior minutes but yeah they have a lot of other Behavior needs that take apart and take up time through the day that aren't necessarily a part of their IEP or bip because you can't can't plan for when those escalations happen I need to get headed downtown so I can get some coffee before I have to walk into this tree that's what I'm gonna do and I'll catch up with you later not ideal this is the bottom that's the top there's a whole rainbow okay and it's a little after three o'clock but training is done and I'm not gonna head to my school too take the test but also start setup so here we go this is what we're working with surprised at how much I do like the carpet and they really put things back together pretty well okay so I am obviously back in my classroom now but I am not entirely sure how much I'm actually gonna do today walking around like they really did put things back pretty well there's some bulletin boards I've contemplated changing or adding and then I had to like clear out all of my shelving back here and this is not where this goes so I don't know I need to take this test anyways and so I think after I'm done taking this test I will mentally see how much energy I have left to putting some of this stuff back but I should get started on this on this and I'm gonna see how much candy I've left in my uh cupboards that's kind of gross because it's been in there for two months now but don't we all kind of need something to help us Focus so okay that's what I'm gonna do and then I'll check back in with you to see what I have the energy to do in my room right now I finished that test that I passed so that's good there's really only one thing that I have the energy for right now and that is two I want to switch this table with this right here so it's nice to have this little Keurig and uh microwave back here with some other things um that are out of the way for students however I only have six different partitioned work and calm down areas in my room and you know ideally and not all my students are in here at the same time but sometimes they are and we need a lot of available places I've got more students on my roster than I have a partitioned spaces for sure what would happen sometimes is you know it's fine to have kids share spaces because not everybody's in here at the same time but when I have kids share like very designated spaces that are theirs um you know if they both need it at the same time it can be really hard to be flexible and get them to you know a student who is escalating and beginning to be in crisis to get them to be flexible in that moment and go to a different area is really hard so I'm gonna try to not have or get away from it as much as possible where any one cubicle space is theirs and um that means I just need more shelving available for students to like come in and get their break box or get their work things if that's what they're coming in for and once if I can set this down I can show you this better but like these shelves are on both sides of this so what I'm thinking is if I switch this with the table that's back there this table can slide in here and all of the staff things that I had on there can still be on top of that and I will have room underneath if I need to put additional shelving there but I can at least use these little Cubbies that are on the reverse side of it to put student things that that home and house all of their materials so I'm gonna try to set the camera down and see if I can show that switch happening [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] that's which made a lot of difference for us so okay um it's 4 30 so I should go home and I am teaching a half day of summer school tomorrow and then I'll have the afternoon in here again to hopefully put back together some of the stuff back here and reorganize some of the stuff that got messed up from Summer cleaning so all right stay tuned for day two [Music] done with summer school back in my room ready to continue with setup what I'm thinking I need to attack first is this area uh it's an eyesore to me to like that it's functional yes because I use those binders but with where it's going to be at now closer to students there's no reason for kids to need anything there so thinking I'm going to and because I need to replace all the food stuff there I need to move that by the table that has the microwave and stuff away from student access now yes technically somebody could run over there and get it but it's tucked away in an area that they have no reason to go in I think the things that are gonna go here will be more books that I'm okay with students touching getting out looking through meeting and other manipulatives I actually have a cart of math manipulatives down here and then it has a lot of them in there as well once that all gets put back but these are not actually very easy to get out from these lower shelves here if you're using them very often so I think it'll be easier if I have them just more accessible right here and I can even you know direct students to turn around because they're going to be sitting at my teacher table here set the camera up and you can kind of watch me in a time lapse just putting all those things away okay I'm pulling a lot of things out of here and I like feeling better I guess about this being more cleared off here but yeah I'm pulling things out of there and I'm creating a huge mess over here trying to reorganize that I need to kind of reorganize and rethink that first before I figure out you know what's going to go or fit over here because some of the things that I was mentally planning on putting here don't really fit there well and I don't like the way it looks so we're gonna try this again [Music] okay [Music] [Music] feel good about that um there's some other there's a mess if I turn this around back here that needs to be put away but we'll get to that uh one of my favorite things this is not my original idea but it's really smart for space saving is to hang borders and like these are I use this when I do super Flex teaching there for power masks and these is a number line shoes command hook and uh binder clips and hang them that way so this is what we're working with here it's not terrible this I mean there's a lot to clear off here and figure out where it's going and I need to figure that out some more it still is an eyesore to me so that's going to take some thinking but that's next [Music] it's not completely finished but it's less of an eyesore than it was I'm trying to make sure that everything that's on it doesn't stick out farther than the Shelf is because that's a huge thing for me and most of the things there are I've got student binders and books I got a lot of read aloud books a lot of social skills books and some mathematic shifts and these are social skills games and that's my social skills okay I know those personal books social skills curriculum bip checklists in this that book binder games social skills games manipulatives math manipulatives read aloud books that are like social skills related more like straightforward social skills books my math manipulative so um I have some built-in shelves along this wall that I am that's where I housed everything that goes in here while they were doing the work this summer so I need to put the things from back there back in here so uh that's next [Music] thank you foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] I truly feel so good about the progress that I made today I have some organizational things that I want to do and maybe that would be a great another video and I show you some of my organization systems because I want to clean some of it out from last year I did my filing cabinet on our teacher work day at the end of school last year so that's one thing that I do have done but all the rest of my drawers I do want to like pull the drawers out and go through and uh clean them out but I mean things are in place I think so besides anything new that I get Amazon orders wish list things that come in like things are put away and so I feel good about this so I'm going to give you a quick little tour of how far we got today this is my super Flex social town bulletin board this is not a nugget couch it's a knockoff off of Amazon but it works just the same it's fantastic highly suggest great little spot over here love it okay I'm moving this way again we got all the partitions mats we've talked about that this cart here I really like it looks kind of messy right now but I am going to put some labels on it and um you know maybe make it look a little bit prettier but functionally it works really well there's clipboards uh coloring books white boards whiteboard markers pencils for students right when they come in they need you know a mental break something to distract them and get their mind off things there's some like Puzzles Facebook stuff in there there's more markers for coloring Kleenex hand sanitizer wipes Lysol all the good stuff keep your hands clean so that station actually is very useful even if it's not very pretty like I said earlier this station is going to be for student materials and Cubbies and so they're going to have little caddies and baskets in there that are gonna be labeled one thing I need to do is buy more of this hopefully I can find the same pattern if not it's not a huge deal to line those and then label student caddies put them there is my teeth area yeah there's a lot of things out between having mats because this is really easy to pull out like an accordion and so you can create another barrier that way so like you know if a student is getting escalated and even if it's not the one that I'm working with can get very easily pulled out and you know kind of protect our space back here and create our own little learning area so here's where I teach my lessons from got my filing cabinet 10 drawer toolbox um sink sheets that I use my oh I hope you can't see names there that's my schedule from last year I'm going to replace with my schedule from this year a feelings chart manipulatives and things that I use most often my clever touch love my sloths there a growth mindset posters I did not make those I do have a Teachers Pay teacher's store but I did not make those ones and I don't even remember who did so sorry I can't help you there that was from not that's not even correct oh wait does it say 26 if we move it yeah okay that's from the last for like my lessons these two right here like I've got a drawer for every lesson that I teach and then this is my emergency sub plans so they're just in drawers and they're not totally sub plans but more so like if I get called to go help with the situation and the students pair professional needs to work with them during the day then I will you know tell them to get something out of the emergency sub drawer and more so like supplemental activities that anybody could pick up and do with them it doesn't need to be like a trained teacher who knows how to do a reading intervention or whatever it's a lot of read aloud books and easy activities in there and then over here this got broken when they were replacing the carpet I realized this is supposed to help it's supposed to be under here and keep that class but that needs to get fixed so that this actually stays shut but the Reed and student iPads to check out background the adult things floor light microwave please tell me if the Keurig cups are going to get cooked being on top of the microwave like this I hope not but if they do please tell me so I can figure out a different Arrangement here but anyways that's the room so thank you so much for sticking with me through this this is my first Vlog and classroom setup so I hope you enjoyed this video I hope you found it interesting hopefully uh you got some good ideas of things that you could adapt for your own classroom and yeah if there's anything glaringly obvious that you're like why did you do this please comment below ask me or notify me something that maybe I am not thinking through clearly any questions comments leave them below thanks for watching [Music] foreign
