There is actually an interesting theory out there that says that they do remember each other in the end. It has to do with how the movie itself is framed. Remember how the beginning of the film is pretty much the same train scene from the end of it? The main plot of the movie itself can be seen as an extended flashback from when they see each other on their opposite trains. I also found evidence to back this theory up, the main one being the overhearing Tessie's name scene near the end.
