Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
He is using the word enthusiast for a very specific reason. He can say good things about it and at the same time keep people from buying it and not damage his relationship with the Samsungs and Apples of the world. Nothing we haven't seen from him or others before.
The Xperia offers everything his preferred flagship phones offer and then adds a 4k 120hz screen, a headphone jack, an SD card slot, and a shutter button, among other things. Based off of all that, the Xperia seems to be the ultimate flagship, the complete opposite of an enthusiast phone.
Well he kinda rushed through the review and for the camera that he probably took only basic shots and all of them probably soft?! Anyways if Sony sent the device for MKBHD to review and getting "Enthusiast" title at least a win. Now what Sony really needs to do is to polish that software for AI photography and minor software tweaks like different resolutions with different refresh rates.
At the end you can't make all the consumers happy.
The words don't exist for how much I cringed when he said "one three" like some clueless idiot.
He pretty much hyped up the device up until the end, where he said do not buy the device, a samsung s21 ultra is a similar price but has a better camera, software, etc etc..
Wonder if the mark 2 phones will get the new camera apps, pretty nice to have them in one
Did Sony finally step up their marketing by giving phones out to YouTubers? Because last year, MKBHD did not seem that interested in Xperia at all. This is good though
He's right about the recommendations. Would I get it for myself? Absolutely. Would I recommend it foe my parents or my friends? Probably not.
I really like MKBHD but I feel like he didn't go in very thoroughly with this one. So much was glossed over and then ultimately he said don't buy it.. even though it's the kitties titties. The major complaint was all about software "quirks" that will undoubtedly get fixed, probably day one.
He didn't bother mentioning the tethering capabilities and being able to use it as a monitor with sony alpha cameras. Which is surprising since he likes to geek out on video / photo stuff.
Didn't bother mentioning the game replay function which is pretty darn cool and worth mentioning, IMO despite how niche phone gaming is, it's still worth mentioning. Especially since he's gone into far greater detail about other "gaming" phones.
Didn't mention the audio Dac
What really bothered me was the complaint about the photos. I feel like he really didn't spend much time actually diving in and messing with it. It shoots RAW, it shoots flat for a reason. It's not applying auto adjustments to make the photo overly saturated by default. It's meant to be treated like a real camera. Out of all people, I thought he would have caught or noticed this or even been impressed by it. Just edit the photo and see how well it retains the details!
That one shot with the android was a good example because it was close up, great DOF, super sharp. A little flat but again, easily improved with a quick edit. It just felt like he was making a mockery of the whole camera system and wasn't really taking it serious. I don't think he even mentioned the sensor size and didn't go into any detail about the video capture functions.
I don't know what the point of my post is. I guess I'm a little miffed by how much people still ride on Samsungs coattails and refuse to say anything is better or worth it. Every review is the same. "well this phone gives you more options and so many awesome features that samsung doesn't offer, but you should still buy the samsung... because.. you know, it's samsung". 🙄
MKBHD : 'Why aren't people buying Sony phones?'
Also MKBHD : 'Buy the Galaxy s21 ultra instead ya'll. Don't buy this unless you're an 'enthusiast'. '
Yep. Cuz having practical features that were common in phones a couple years ago are now considered "enthusiast" features?
