sonic mania made a lot of people fall in love with Sonic all over again thanks to the collaborative efforts of Sega and some genuine fans turned developers sonic mania reminded everyone of what made Sonic so wonderful in the first place and while fans are still eagerly anticipating the confirmation of future retro style sonic games there is something to hold them over an update to Sonic mania including revamped stages in the return of two extremely deep cut characters from saunas history was released almost a year after the base game and I'll be finding out for myself whether that update is unsubstantial or an integral addition when I complete Sonic mania + hey everyone and welcome to the very first episode of the completionist dlc the show are all be revisiting the games I've already previously completed and tackling the additional content they've received in the meantime to kick things off I'm gonna complete Sonic mania + and regress even further into my 90s nostalgia those were the good times didn't have to pay bills Lavar was stalled Reading Rainbow man there were good times may the VAR still is on Reading Rainbow he like owns the show now I guess the good times never end [Music] you [Music] sonic mania single-handedly reignited my dwindling passion for Sonic and I don't think I'm alone in that after so many disappointing sonic releases many players were ready to pick a little guy up throw him in the basement of shame and throw away that key forever but sonic mania proved that Sonic games could still be done well even if it meant returning to twenty-year old tactics now sonic mania felt like someone reached into the past of some extremely lucky alternate universe and pulled out their version of Sonic 4 it was that faithful to the classic stuff but not only that Sonic mania also featured a handful of new ideas that seemed like they could have been the natural progression of the classic sonic formula had that formula managed to survive into the late 90s and getting to complete Sonic mania was just as awesome as I had hoped I happily gorged myself on all of the extra modes collectibles and multiple campaign playthroughs and it was by far the fattest classic style Sonic game I had ever completed and after giving it a completed rating I was still hungry for more just take all that Sonic mini you can find put it in a trough right in front of me and let me go to work thankfully Sonic mania plus is a hefty update complete with an entirely new mode known as encore mode and more importantly the glorious resurrection of two of Sonic's oldest partners someone must have broken the seal on Sega's vault of obscure characters because mighty the armadillo and Ray the flying squirrel are back here's hoping that that vault stay shut for now though we don't need any other embarrassments from Sonic's Past clawing their way out of the Phantom Zone like brown Sonic or that human girl that he made out with that one time well whatever the hell this nightmare creature is somebody get the goddamn holy water sonic mania + fires on all cylinders when it comes to additional content while some new stuff was added in a free post-launch patch there are tons of gameplay options aesthetic improvements and hidden goodies that you can only get with the paid DLC and because of all that extra stuff completing Sonic mania just got even tougher there are actually some new narrative elements in Sonic mania + specifically within the new encore mode if balls wasn't the same narrative continuity as the base game as well as sonic forces it picks up right after the events of the ladder game with Sonic being transported back to Angel Island zone thanks to the power of the phantom Ruby a mystical MacGuffin that ends up being unimportant and uninteresting and no less than three campaigns sonic eventually comes across his two most neglected and most imprisoned friends mighty and Ray Sonic destroys their cage and after the player chooses one of the two the other animal buddy is revealed to be that punk-ass practitioner of prestidigitation the heavy magician of the hard-boiled heavies the rogue egg Robo snags the Ruby and heads off to revive the rest of his mechanical big-boy brethren Sonic and his sidekick arrived just in time to get transported all the way back to Green Hill Zone again which means Sonic and company are gonna have to complete their adventure all over again to rescue their friends defeat the hard world heavies and reclaim the plot to vitami phantom ruby essentially the only reason there's any new story stuff at all is justify why mighty and Ray have returned after all this time and why the heavies are back to wreak more havoc honestly I don't think it's that imaginative and it's kind of low effort but it is effort they could have included absolutely no narrative elements to frame this new mode at all and I would have taken it with a smile and a song but they did give us something which is greatly appreciated I don't think anyone will deny that the real stars of Sonic mania plus are mighty and Ray who were long thought forgotten to history rather than just glorified skins for the established characters mighty and Ray each bring their own unique play styles to the table first off my t's hard body allows him to perform the hammer drop which you can bring him down on top a bad guy reveal certain hidden paths beneath him he can also shrug off a single hit from spikes but you can tell he's more hurt than he lets on we don't cry in the car then there's ray who borrows mario's cape physics to air glide his way through zones this guy already has become the golden child of Sonic mania speedruns thanks to that technique ray is outrunning Sonic in his own game that's cold-blooded these two new dudes fit right in with the rest of the playable cast thanks to their genuinely classic designs and well-thought-out techniques I completely missed knuckles chaotix back in the day so getting to play a classic Sonic game with such a large cast is kind of a treat but the larger cast does mean that there's even more completing to do this time around with two new characters comes two more single character trips through Sonic manias main campaign aka mania mode there would have been two more trips to complete with mighty and ray each having to do it all over again with Knuckles tagging along in an knuckles mode but now that players can toggle that extra on an established saved file my TN ray only have to beat the final level while babysitting knuckles now that you guys are a part of the Sonic crew you got a babysit too don't let him out of your sight don't give him any sugar no matter what he tells you encore mode is where most of the new gameplay lies it's yet another trip through the campaign except players are always in control of two characters with the ability to swap direct control between the two of them and just about any time on top of that there aren't any extra lives at all instead if your lives are maxed out at five directly represented by the five different playable characters during encore mode players will encounter our item monitors that contain another missing member from the squad they then add it to your queue of characters and the next time your active character dies they'll be replace with the next dude in line it's like a dark relay race where the person who hands you the stick dies when they let it go yeah there are item monitors and let you switch for free for that relay thing sounds way more hardcore this system adds a ridiculous amount of variety to yet another playthrough and since you're not really selecting any characters when you start up your playthrough you only have to beat encore mode one time to satisfy your completing criteria and things even feel fresher thanks to the make overs that each and every zone has received there's now a raging outside the flying battery hydrocity looks like it's been remodeled in the style of labyrinth zone in that late night mirage saloon is all kinds of sexy these changes also would have been enough justification for the new mode but each level also has been tweaked a little to accommodate mighty and raised abilities for the sake of changing things up for seasoned players and let's not forget the various changes from the free patch which include tweaked boss fights now this metal sonic fight is only a slight pain in the ass and miraculously one of my biggest complaints about Sonic mania has been addressed there are now transitions between every single zone making the entire campaign feel fluid and more immersive unfortunately there aren't any new levels in sog mania Plus like many of us were hoping there is a brief trip through a part of Angel Islands over the top of the Encore mode but it would have been nice to add some more full levels to really cement this game as the biggest and baddest classic Sonic game of all time there is a new bonus stage mode though a pinball minigame replaces the blue spheres as the bonus stages in encore mode it's pretty self-explanatory and pretty easy allowing you to record continues power-ups and even rescue me more of your friends but if you're looking for a challenge then the new special stages in encore mode are here to shove your spin they have been amped way the hell up and will leave you feeling like fox mulder just staring at a UFO that flies away knowing you'll never see it again there are also new codes to play with they can only be accessed with the no safe file and you have to input them on the not-so-secret level select screen there's a code to unlock all the Chaos Emeralds instantly and one that lets your character fly around in super mode like it's the very last level these codes are fun and very welcome sonic mania plus is just about everything I'd want from an update to Sonic mania there's something new no matter which one you're playing in and it continues the theme of reincorporating the past while also trying the new stuff completing it it's just a matter of a few more campaign playthroughs but with all the new toys to do it with it feels like the first time almost all over again yo but what about vape mode ok fine there is an actual thing called vape mode in Sonic mania Plus even though it sounds like a rumor that the meme armies would have made up because aboard the actual code to unlock this mode has not been discovered yet and it may not even exist as this mode the candy to be called that may not have ever been intended for players it can only be accessed with tools on the PC version of the game and all it does is slow down the game soundtrack a bit emulating the somehow popular music form known as vaporwave that's about it granted these songs sound dope this way but taking badass songs from the 70s and 80s and changing the BPM it doesn't make it a new genre of music but that's how hip-hop got started they actually mixed and scratched and rapped over the stuff they took these VAP dudes are just slowing stuff down and are being called artistic geniuses you you sound like an old man I am an old man [Music] you get what you pay for when it comes to Sonic mania plus which is a lot but unfortunately there aren't any unlockables to speak of within this new content there may not be any progressive rewards to scratch at the dopamine centers of your brain but there's so many stellar additions available right from the start and I hardly even notice myself going through the reward withdrawal I got the shakes baby while I completed the sonic mania plus DLC there were seven more deaths three more campaign playthroughs 21 more chaos and multi collected eight more hours of total playtime and two more Sonic characters that will never be able to ignore again because Ray is too fast to catch and mighty is kind of sensitive sonic mania Plus is more than worth the price of admission as the only further solidify sonic mania as the ultimate classic Sonic game improved there are still plenty of pieces of Sonic's history that deserves modernization and that Sonic can still have a bright future whether you've already completed it or this is your first brush with Sonic mania the DLC is definitely worth your time it actually made Sonic mania way better than it already was which I didn't think was very possible so
