hey it's brain scratch here and we're doing another Sonic commentary listen to this music we've reached tranquility and welcome to brain scratch commentaries the PlayStation 4 menus music is quite Zen but I just wanted to show off the the ps4 theme that came with the pre-order but yeah it's the sonic mania commentary and because Sega keep spewing these games out and we keep never shutting up about something prophetic we're always gonna be here when a new sonic trying to play sonic media or as I prefer to call it Sonic 4 as everyone actually imagined did hmm I like sonic advance already did that a couple ago for that kind of good not to mention I'd imagine a sonic 4 to have new stages but whatever see those two things I like the fact that you're using what I can only imagine is tea Lopes is actual original resolution for this intro like yes it's pretty good I forgot what their point was gonna make so i-i've attract my to statement doesn't difference in the actual than the in the in-game version well if you let the title screen sit for two runs through the animated intro the second one will have a different music track and it will also have sound effects like in sonic spin dashes or bounces off the bumpers the original track is friends from high pop oceans which is also a really good thing it yeah just just looking at the anime animation and listening to the music track it kind of sounds like this theme syncs up better with the animation but both themes the hyper potions one in the tea lips one play during the end credits so they're both justice legitimate to the game maybe they have maybe they had tea making an alternative opening just in case our potions said no yeah the Sonic account many youtube comes that you should make it a song for opening animation and they actually said no I would attorney I would imagine it Sarah I would imagine tea Lopes made that first and then they were like oh we can get hyper potions to I don't think that title screen says press any button [ __ ] I spent six hours pressing the o2 bar nothing [ __ ] happened there's an Eddie Eddie key this game is madness hashtag anyway I apologize for the extra menu spoilers but I did want to show that I have all of the gold medals reason being and I am not doing any of the blue spheres during this run except for a crushed it well except for a couple points where like I just happened to accidentally get launched into a sparkle at that point I said [ __ ] it and just perfect at the stage is my question are they are the blue spheres actually the same special stages from Sonic 3 or 14 of them are Sonic and the three and uncles in the rest are original okay as far as we know because they could have just pulled from the million levels from Blue's yeah yeah actually I'm not sure about the extra stages that fell out the other 232 but I know for a fact that when you go into the blue sphere game in the extras menu and select mania mode you are playing entirely new stages because they actually added new mechanics that weren't in the previous blue spheres games green spheres there's a spheres that you walk through to turn them blue for one thing which is interesting really weird it's like your own walking experiment yeah I'm gonna I'm gonna say this a lot over this game and I don't really mean any offence by this but but like many things in this game this intro just reeks a friend game like it's the exact same intro to Sonic 3 you know only this time there's a crazy blue diamond okay so we're pointing it out someone pointed out in the charity stream how like the game begins in Angel Island Angel Island supposed to be open I pointed that out that was me I'm right right you I said that and I was like no snow is shipping a techno vine you don't know your sonic claw yeah dammit it's very bizarre that Angel Island is apparently in the ocean again but what is it's taking arrest no explanation what's flying tick so uh but you know at least knuckles is doing his [ __ ] job in this game you even get to defend the Master Emerald when Plagueis knuckles anyway yeah but in any case here we are a green hill zone again okay you just did it how the hell did you do the [ __ ] drop - I can't do it you hold the jump button after once you're in the air like at the peak of your jump hold the jump button until you land I tried that it doesn't work I'm bad I'm bad at video you have to you have to press the jump button again and press yeah you have to press the jump button again and also has to be a fairly high jump you're not gonna get a drop - out of a tiny jump which I assume they did to make it a little less abusable it's a bit tricky at first and once you get the timing down it's quite simple to pull off that said though wasn't losing sleep when I unlocked as the shield and swap it out for that yeah you're not you're not gonna you're not gonna save time by doing drop dashes over a spin - if you can stop to do a spin - by all means but like I love the drop - because it's just fun to use and you know I didn't use it at all until well this is a story that I've been hearing a lot from a lot of different people start a Speedway it was the metal sonic boss fight that that got me to learn how to use the drop - to the point where I was using it naturally the drop - seems almost like an entirely addition for speedruns yeah helped if there was some sort of visual indication that you could there is or something I read hey you can't not that I can notice when you do the drop - in midair sonic will visually start spinning really fast while you I could not have different you also here to be fair to Ted you're already spinning kind of fascist from a normal jump enemy yeah well yeah but you also get the spin - sound effect when you do it io something a little bit more obvious I guess is more what I'm trying it's about as obvious no you could make a little flashy thing on Sonic to make it as that was the insta shield though - to be fair - Ted even the at least in the peaceful version even the control page doesn't even listen yeah as an option for what you can do like it's it's not read that even the game if you had if you hadn't seen the first trailer which says all-new drop - you wouldn't even know it's a thing in this game really yeah that's true and I was gonna bring that up later but I wanted to use those three seconds the boss was on screen - just appreciate that the fact that the you know with the second boss of Green Hill is the death egg robot the first boss is Minnie ethics oh my god Sonic me yes such a sonic for ripoff with these zip lines yeah what you know what these zip lines are so much more fun oh just like this like it's greenhill x3x are floating for the record like when I say that they're more fun I mean like they're more fun mechanically like the the speed with which you hit the zip lines effects where they go and in what direction you can't actually use the zip line to go backwards along the line if you want to there's no reason to but it's something they programmed in and I love that also fire shields burned down the spike bridges the fire shields burned down like everything essentially getting a tune for the first time ever every shield has a secondary environmental effect though the bubble shields prevent protects you from damage in chemical plant zone when you land on the thick blue goop and the lightning shields are magnetic so I didn't know about that the goop I discovered it by accident while I was recording forget the bubble shield and chemical point yeah the bubble shield is good and is good for the blue goop because it lets you walk on it just like fire shield protecting from lava um sometimes I'm sure we get to inflame batteries sometimes if you have an electric shield like I don't want to be magnetized I can go where I want to go something magnet I see yeah yeah it's a is a there are times in this game where I honestly just want the normal shield because well for one thing I love the drop - and for another I don't necessarily always want those secondary environmental effects so I can't think of any negative reason for the bubble shield or fire shield one I'm still led but waiting for a sonic game were diving into water with an electric shield violently electrocutes the natural ecosystem yeah and Ted also Ted just talked about 2d point about you know zip - she's ripping off sonic for you you clearly didn't play into Ireland you scrub there kind of the cut up in sonic 3 dude well yeah yeah there were um zip line things in Ireland are then fire burns one of them there are actually zip lines that had a you know swinging vines on the zip lines so you would zip across it but then you'd swing around in a circle and you could jump off of it glorious three frames of animation match something free it's a great game can you play that instead why why we kind of already are we've considering the blue spheres and returning zones which which I'm thankful for ultimately that while there is Sonic 1 in green hill and some Sonic 2 stuff they're taking a lot more from Sonic 3 & Knuckles well there's two no Sonic 3 gets three stages Sonic and every other game besides Sonic one gets two Sonic one just has Green Hill Zone but you know speaking of Sonic 1 notice the fish and the birds in the background yep but Noah just ultimately with the turning blue sphere and some other ideas and other stuff in extras I'm glad that they are doing more sakari stuff because Sonic wanted to have already gotten ported remade remastered whatever yeah - everything in Sonic 3 & Knuckles got like no love for years on end so at the same time it kind of makes Greenhill just feel that more obligatory is a chemical plant - because chemical plant in Green Hill are also the first two stages in Sonic Generations chemical plant that's some really cool [ __ ] in this game I will say though guys there are three games there are three new Sonic games released this year that have green hill after this year can we never [ __ ] see this level ever again please at least for 10 years at least ten years Angel Island some love instead ever real till ok expecting a Sonic mania - and I'm expecting it to be mostly original just because that's just because that's the the direction that like unanimous fan feedback for this game has been going is like we want original zones everyone said yeah and now Christian and the other developers from this game now have the kind of clout to say okay if you want to do Sonic Media let us do what we want and not just remake stuff we told you we know what we were doing Knight complete please less about the closet before original zones are almost unanimously like complete positively received like most people say are the strongest parts of the game well except for the one part where it's technically sky chase zone but well - two things about oh well I think it was Clemente who said that that that boss does have an end I've never gotten to us I've never gone to it cuz I'm not bad at this game and also too I think I think I'm taxman at one point said you know they the addition of the old levels was surprised surprise is ook reside here so if you don't like them just blame blame him I guess Sonic so is it yeah some summit team where at least azúcar had a bigger hand in this game's development than we initially thought but hopefully now they can leverage more creative control Ferb yeah it would be a messy from the eventual sonic mania to which we all know will eventually happen at well this did here's the thing I don't necessarily know if that's as much of a sure thing because they might think oh everybody loved it when we brought back old bubbles let's bring back even more old bubbles you know that could just as easily be no now people are pretty damn clear about how they feel about it at this point every review is saying no it's not the fans it's the reviews all of the reviews the official ones and magazines websites everything yeah if there's if there's one thing that Sega or I'm not sure about Sonic Team but say get the very least will respond to its Metacritic scores that's the whole reason why they blacklist it like was it unleashed Black Knight yeah the manic score sitting in like well last time I checked it was 91 originally it was like in the 80s and you know 91 just for the switch I believe oval rule week 7 like 86 which is still like yeah the highest rated gaming I think 15 years which is says a lot about this franchise yeah detractors are being snarky [ __ ] about that like Oh most Triple A games 90 is a good score but for you you're settling for 80 me oh [ __ ] you all but the the point is that the Metacritic scores one thing but the reviews attached to it or another and pretty much every review ever written this game ever put to YouTube video ever ever printed in a magazine or published on a website has said the exact same thing that the original zones are some of the strongest parts of the game and we wish there were more of them that's that you shall watch Johnny versus Sonic maybe on some call me Chuck ultimately it's not a huge deal breaker for me considering especially as we get later in the game it's really only a problem early with like green ho act 1 and chemical plant act 1 being very close recreations but every act 2 and some of the later returning stages act what are very unique compared to the original designs it's mostly just visual motifs so it's not a huge deal breaker for me but I agree that I would want completely unique zones well you say every act - but hydrocity action I was for some reason yeah hydrocity act - I can't do my Jo City damn folks I dress the zone act 2 - I can't even tell if there's any difference at all personally the boat oh yeah that's the vote in the bubble Sonic Sonic Sonic Team Japan have officially it is officially hydro city but for some reason in Sonic 3 and in this game they don't put the space and that's why this game is zero at 10 because it's [ __ ] trash also the devs were completely devious and putting that special ring down at the the poisoned water yes so are you gonna get through all these special stages in the first part no second part okay that it's supersonic for the next 12 as with Sonic 3 & Knuckles I am so good at these special stages at this point that they are trivial so yes hashtag humble brag Jesus Christ Luis yeah III I love these special stage oh I hate going this one I hate that I'm very like let's start with mr. wits head okay so you can all tell me I'm wrong all right I hate how they control I feel Sonic's very very slippery and I try to do the things that Lewis is doing right now like jump around corners or and like follow the path as close as possible but I always feel like sonic slides to the left and right and I can't control where he's supposed to go when i find myself bouncing into things and off the stage all the time you know what it is it's because you know i and this was a deliberate design decision but i understand why you don't necessarily like it the the controls for the special stages aren't meant to control like a moderate a three-day game they're meant to control like what a sega saturn's 3d special stage my almost kind of like a racer in a sense well yeah well that's that's why I bring up the Sega Saturn because Sega Saturn was a 3d game console with a d-pad yeah the other thing is that I've seen a lot of people uh [ __ ] God to see that still happens kind of complain about for asbestos they just said oh I can't move around a minute here and I feel like I'm craning all over the place when I jump it's like well if you're going that fast when you jump in midair you can't turn on a dime in midair so you can't alleged you know people no you can't not in midair no but in a yeah like midair turning in 3d is probably one of the most temperamental things ever when you can when you think about it like the faster you're going the more uncontrollable that's going to be yeah the jumping in the subtle stages for me is different is is painful and to another degree because I don't know why but for some reason what sonic jumps in midair you lose the speed that the thing about um no damn the the thing about the turning about jumping in the special stages though is that when you land you shoot straight forward in the direction that Sonic is turning so the real trick is to to use jumping to do tight turns yeah I mean the the slippery control is deliberately designed that's the whole point you know when you you grab enough blue spheres you better go faster and faster so you can catch you at the time you're gonna control like [ __ ] yeah Marc Mach 3 it doesn't mean you have to like it yeah this means them you know this is something you have to adapt to if you want to continue on - yeah - go to go on what what Jenny says like yeah and Louis says like I completely understand the choice they did they do fight to make it control so much like Sonic are the fainting with this whole kind of it is the same skidding effect so it's it's just I just think it's just a better fit was just a bad design choice like I get why they did it I just don't agree with their choice to do it at the same time I find it more fun than any of the other special stages in the series it to be it's better than any half fight yes quite it's not the freaking half flavor I appreciate you I appreciate the attempt at originality and I do get that they were going for its tests I was trying to grind special stages in chemical plants on act 1 actually after I beat in the game because I couldn't beat them on my own and I just wanted to throw my control our points because I would jump and then Creon off the stage so many times they're not they're probably okay I'm not gonna say some of the hardest special stages because I actually am able to beat some of them so that makes them that easier than Sonic 2 for me at the very patient but and general I would say that this is one of the harder games in this style generally like I think it's harder than Sonic 3 at the very least oh really yeah I mean great did I'm not very good at these games in general so you know the reason for that honestly is that Sonic threes difficulty curve was thrown off by the fact that they had to split it into two games so both halves of the game have to be roughly as difficult as a standalone game well Sonic threes difficulties weird because Sonic 3 has a like a pretty standard difficulty curve then you go to Sonic and Knuckles and mushroom hill is that easy and then you go straight to flying battery zone which is harder than launch base so the actually the fun thing about flying battery is that it actually was supposed to be fairly early on it's 93 oh it was supposed to be after what was a carnival night you would shoot out of the cannon and land in the and yes I I think flyingbat you didn't let into ice cap I believe as well oh wow that's a I've never seen this part of the level design before but that's that's a wacky Warcraft callback another great thing about this game so many different yeah this isn't true of all the levels Sonic 4 had alternate routes - you know it also control significantly worse so their routes mine [ __ ] you that brings up a level design comment that I wanted to make about this game and this is true more of the earlier levels because the later levels tend to be a bit more closed off in structure for the sake of difficulty and but the the level design in this game is much different than Sonic 4 and in fact if I were to call it anything as that is largely a combination of Sonic CD and Sonic 3 & Knuckles yes very exploitive very vertical very explorative and very vertical but also very long and that was it was it was a bit of a system limitation back at the time is that Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD both had a very specific design priority for their levels but they had to make sacrifices to make it work in the sense that Sonic CD sacrificed its length for verticality and a Sonic 3 & Knuckles sacrifice verticality for length which I agree this is a bit more of a happy medium because I ultimately did not like Sonic CDs overly vertical stages because I don't feel he was Sonic is quite designed for that son Sonic CD is a Sonic CD had a really had a real sandbox feel which in a way is kind of forward-thinking you because it is like a you know getting to the end level was easy as pants but the the actual the actual levels themselves had a lot a lot going on so just exploring them was a hell of a fun time you get a lot of that same high here at the same time it does make the stages very very very long even if you are just trying to go to the end because I've had several stages in several acts in this game for me go over 6 minutes most of them I said went over 6 minutes several of them were like 8 or 9 and that's that's the in-game that's just the in-game timer now counting taking breaks for blue sphere or dying or yeah yeah my first playthrough the game was actually fairly explorative on my average time was like five to six minutes I because I love to look around these kind of games I actually did time over once I think that's really only a problem on your first playthrough though once you get it once you get a better feel for how the levels are constructed that said didn't need time overs in this game that's an outdated concept at all our lives any more lives Oh Judy Johnny just just get good just good yeah antiquated live system it's it's your fault that you focus your flow for taking time to explore these levels that will define a generation okay goo joob you scrub to be honest though I don't think there are any levels where the design is inherently against the time over like sand Ovilus act 2 was yeah yeah I would all yaki Titanic Manik is the only level way if it was a matter fact that the boss resets the timer I would have timed all that the bomb doesn't reset the timer the boss throws the timer out of whack and completely takes it out of the equation no he means Titanic no no Titanic monarch not the final level final I'm talking about the one waste lucky egg mention is it is bull with either oh oh the yeah we just want to try the final zone without actually calling it a final zone but uh yeah the level design in this game though for as expansive and explorative as it is pretty much every level with the possible exception of the some portions of oil ocean zone are really speed happy in their in their design like there's always like there's always hold right to win oh my gosh did Jim Smith yeah geez no I don't mean speed I don't mean speed happy in a sense of hold right to win that's more of a sonic advance to concept yeah I mean speed happy in the sense that there are a lot of opportunities where you are highly encouraged to roll down a hill and physics yourself into a long zigzag of speed that you're probably gonna have to pay a lot of attention during that because if you don't stop yourself during a specific you might miss a secret like the beginning of this level is a good example of that where I actually had to deliberately hold back and explore that section to find that ring because if I had just let the game carry me through that section it would have taken me automatically into the upper area guys just sit there just before we get to the boss with some sure whoo-ha things to say about who we just we just take a moment just to appreciate this [ __ ] in sweet right pile we're having it's not a chemical on this track man it's so [ __ ] it is on point as the kids said four years ago it's way past cool sonic would say it's one of the it's one of the cases where the Sonic CD mentality the Sonic CD and Saturn mentality really pays off for this game Japanese also hi Donny you were glad you're so happy yeah you know guy telling about this I want to say funny idea real funny funny joke but there's a there's a slight design problem I feel in in mania where it's if you're not a fan of this franchise I have like knowledge of certain points certain things won't make any [ __ ] sense to you like if you've never played mean bean machine oh this what the [ __ ] is like what the [ __ ] is this to play devil's advocate color matching games are like the most casual popular thing in existence right now so if you've well I think I think I think what I think what Lois I think good boy oh boy oh to win I don't even think you need to make any matches in order to beat egg man I'm saying yeah this is so this is so low difficulty that you will know exactly what you're doing if you played like three seconds of candy crush and you know you just have to last long enough for Eggman to kill himself because he is so bad I'm pretty sure oh yeah also don't vote right here when you win because then you will get stuck in the capsule and not be able to leave like um well you're you could you could jump into it yeah I had that problem the first time I played where I was just ordered jumping around in there for a little while but eventually you will jump up and get caught in the thing and shoot to the goal there's my only problem with the boss before we leave it is ultimately uh I think it's for a platformer it's a little too kind of out of nowhere for a completing chef like that it breaks the flow of the game there's a lot of pauses in this game that while they are very creative and one thing that I will say the rehashed elements bother me because of the creativity on display elsewhere there's a lot of gimmick gimmicky bosses and some of them were quite way better than others and we agree then well get to some of the better and worse ones later on in the flavour yes unfortunately most of the bosses suck before we move on for this part there is one other glitch that I saw just yesterday which will probably be patched out by the time the PC version is released I bet we're after the boss after you win the blue the the the mean beam match sonic just warps to the bottom of the screen and dies for some reason just like in the original game just one of the one of dr. Robotnik's diabolical traps there that is probably the realistic way that a situation where sonic gets trapped in a little box by Eggman would play out he would get shot and mounted into space and a capsule and blown up so I'll put that Hedgehog in a box and up with that bucks instead of another box and then I'll smash it with some main beams beams it smashing what me play my life me means okay
