[Music] when I was a kid I was a huge Sonic fan boy I probably poured hundreds of hours in the Sonic Adventure 2 Z au garden and I would watch Sonic X every Saturday morning on four kids TV I would even draw Sonic characters in class I remember in grade four we had pen pals and I got paired with another kid a province over who was also a huge fan of Sonic I remember the very first letter I ever got from the guy completely outlined all of his made-up Sonic characters and at the time that was something completely foreign to me I think his name was Patrick so of course his sonic o'seas name was Pat the Hedgehog but then he drops the question hey James do you have any made-up Sonic characters that you want to draw and send back to me oh man I tell you the gears started turning I never thought of that before making up my own Sonic characters I remember after that I probably had a handful of them I remember tech the Fox he was pretty much just tails but had goggles on his foreheads and he would always hold a wrench but the crown jewel of it all was Flair the Hedgehog um he was pretty much Sonic but read and could shoot fire out of his hands this is a drawing that somehow survived all the way back from grade 4 come grade five and six I would draw my own comics about this character and his rival Ashe the Hedgehog who had similar powers because they were DNA brothers whatever that means I had so much fun drawing these comics because sonic characters have really appealing but also very simple designs that's super easy for a child to take and tweak to their heart's content so I'm sure you guys are all probably wondering why am i showing you all of this well as a reminder that we were all kids once and that's just what kids do so when they announced you can make up your own Sonic OC and sonic forces I'm not gonna lie a little bit of that childhood excitement really started to catch up with me you look online and see nothing but people just making fun of this like oh no Sega's making o'seas cannon this is a mistake oh come on guys if you're telling me this ain't the kind of thing you've been dying to do since you were seven well I don't know what to tell you dude sometimes you gotta let go of those inhibitions stop being so afraid of being cringy and just bask in that juvenile fun I mean that's all it ever was kids having fun everyone has to discover themselves some way some kids did it by playing baseball other kids did it by sharing sonic o'seas with friends online then there was a period where I really stopped liking Sonic for a little bit you know after so many not-so-great games but Sonic Generations this is what reeled me back in during high school this is my favorite Sonic game of all time I can replay this game start to finish any day of the year and still have a blast so when they showed off the new Sonic game and it looked like they were following this style of gameplay yeah I started looking forward to it and now the games finally out so it's time we see if this games actually any good or not as always it's a sonic game so I got to go in cautiously optomistic I mean after all I'm an optimist but I'm also a realist so let's do it egg man's back and he's biologically engineered a Super Soldier character to finally take down Sonic and his friends once and for all just one run-in with Sonic is all it takes for the Hedgehog to taste defeat flash forward several months later and Sonic his long thought dead while Eggman takes over the entire world a resistance spearheaded by knuckles and some a Sonic's other friends hatches a plan to take the world back this plot is grim it's not what you'd expect from a modern Sonic game ever since colors Sonic's been a self-aware cartoon character starring in light-hearted and goofy plots but forces oh my god good lord it's the serious tough as nails but cheesy as hell sonic plot I've been dying to see again for years Sonic oh six I think was the last game to really be like that and well yeah actually it's incredibly reminiscent of the Sonic Saturday morning cartoon fans of that show are bound to love this game's plot but generally when it comes to the story in Sonic games I really do prefer something way too serious for these characters because that's something I can really laugh at that's probably just a nostalgic bias though because I grew up playing the adventure games but even still I really prefer the serious stuff as opposed to the more goofy stuff it's kind of a mash up of fanservice from all eras we've got a team-up of all the classic sonic villains metal sonic shadow chaos even Zoar vaak okay I can list zero people to care about him but hey chaos is back that's cool though you never get to fight him you fight everybody else but not chaos I have no idea why they even brought the guy back if they're not even going to really use him I think I smell cut content on that one there's also a couple of regulars that strangely didn't make the cut like blaze the cat I take her over Charmy be any day but what can you do anyway the plot kicks off when they get in the new recruit which is where you get to make up your own Sonic character he'll choose an animal to start with and go on from there at first the customization is gonna seem really limited you've only got three face types per animal but you do unlock tons and tons of clothing and accessories as you play the game so you'll gradually get the shape your avatar into something you really like I gave my guy this purple scarf with these teeth on it I've been a sucker for this kind of thing ever since playing Mario Sunshine and sing Bowser jr. make something cool make something dumb it doesn't matter it's all up to you the avatar is one of the three styles of game playing this game alongside it are the return modern sonic gameplay via the boost formula from unleashed in colors and the classic style that was present in generations there's a couple of tweaks to the modern sonic gameplay the light ring - in the drift are both strangely absent the drift especially doesn't make any sense to me because there's a couple of turns in this game I found myself flying off of to my death while boosting if they just had the drift I don't think it would be a problem other than those two everything is accounted for you know the boost the stomp you can slide but it's never used strangely enough I think overall it feels a little more generations than it does colors but the double jump from colors does make a return making those 2d platforming segments a little more doable but man I don't know the control really isn't as good as in those games I found myself really struggling with a couple of the 2d segments purely from not being able to land accurately on smaller platforms and a couple of the 3d segments had me flying off the stage attempt after attempt these controls need refining the classics on a gameplay is pretty much identical to that in generations but with the added drop - ability from Sonic mania not much else I can really say about these levels other than that they're not designed nearly as intricately or well as in Sonic Generations there's not even that many of them either honestly Classic Sonic really feels like an afterthought in this game he's hardly even involved in the plot what really steals the show is the Avatar character it feels very similar to modern Sonic but a tad slower end with a handful of gimmicks that changed things up just enough instead of the homing attack we've got this grapple move and there is a small pause when you initiate it and by viewing the trailers I didn't like how it looked but once you're actually playing the game there is an energy here that does make sense you're not gonna be able to boost as the avatar but you can do the stomp in the quickstep but the main difference here are the wisp ins their gadgets you'll use to take out enemies and to activate certain wisp hours now I really wasn't a big fan of the wisp hours and colors in lost world but here I feel like they pulled it off in a very non intrusive way for once so basically how it works is you'll equip your avatar with one of several wisp ins that can range from things like a flamethrower in electrical whip sonic blasts and a couple of others depending on which one you have equipped you'll be able to use a single wisp ability the flamethrower has this burst move that'll hell you up into the air the Lightning whip can use a light ring - that also plows through enemies the sonic blast gives you a hover move etc etc now what's interesting is that the level is obviously completable no matter which device you choose it's all a matter of what suits your style of gameplay most but depending on which one you have chosen you'll be able to take slightly different pathways there's also red rings that you can only get with certain wisp ins creating a lot of incentive to replay levels and experiment gameplay wise I honestly think it's decent the controls don't feel nearly as good as in generations and it can make some of the more precise platforming segments pretty freakin frustrating but other than that it's a functional game honestly I think the Avatar stages are the best parts of the game it's that familiar gameplay wheel of generations and colors for but tweaked just enough to be a decent departure alongside the modern sonic gameplay if there's any part of the game that really doesn't hit the mark though it's definitely the level design I just don't really think it's quite as up to snuff levels feel so rudimentary compared to generations I mean how many times are you just boosting forward through enemies that are all in a straight line with no real input or playing a stage that doesn't really have much variety in different pathways you can take I mean there are a handful of great stages that will make you feel like you're playing a true sequel to Sonic Generations but overall the levels are pretty underwhelming for the most part and that's pretty disappointing I at least gotta praise the presentation though I mean it is the first real Sonic game of this generation and it looks great the characters are cleaner and crisper than ever and the prominent use of warm golden our lighting delivers on some great-looking environments one thing I'm really not too keen on is the level select screen I mean I understand they wanted a globe to represent all the different regions and who controls what territory and stylistically it looks gritty and fitting the right colors are there and I love the use of bhende dots however it's a big unorganized mess sorting through it to find a level you want to play needs to be way more straightforward than this but perhaps the best thing about this game's presentation has got to be the soundtrack you know sonic always delivers the goods in the sound Department and Forces is no exception it's really different than usual - we've got this bizarre blend of electronic music industrial Drum & Bass hip-hop and there's even a dash of dubstep in there while I didn't like every track in the game there's loads here to love and listen to and honestly that's probably the best way I can describe this entire game I didn't like all of it but there's lots here to love anyway the avatar customization the handful of great levels the music and presentation and the cheesy as hell serious and grim plot it's definitely not one of the best Sonic games that come out in the last decade but it's not one of the worst ones either if Sonic Generations is an A and Sonic Unleashed is a D maybe sonic lost world being a C I'd probably give this a C+ or a B - it definitely has a lot more low points than high points but the low points never stooped low enough to make me ever want to stop playing unlike Sonic Unleashed or Sonic lost world it's really not a very long game either only taking about four to five hours to complete but like Sonic Colors and generations which mind you is also a fairly short game there's loads of replayability like getting off the red rings in every stage s ranking all the stages and trying to unlock all of the custom parts to make avatars with and the game even encourages this by allowing you to make multiple avatars after you complete the game I think in the end if you're a die-hard Sonic fan it's pretty safe to say you are going to like this game otherwise I either wouldn't bother or I'd wait for a price drop I mean the game's not even full price as it stands already but I think it'd be a better investment at a discount maybe 20 bucks or so but yeah if you're really fond of Sonic Generations I don't really see this as a step forward but it is on the same track nonetheless [Music] you [Music]
