so it's time for the downhillers to do battle with this mighty Russian bear of a mountain which is ready to show its claws and its teeth at every turn the 2040 men's Olympic downhill Carlo Janka starting number three first of the swiss made a mistake just lost his balance coming out of the start up there not as smooth as he would have liked won a gold medal four years ago for switzerland in giant slalom since that has been fairly anonymous but it just showed a few signs of a return to form this season following a few health and injury scares ya yanker had a problem in his party of heartlessness of them had a number of injuries that have kept him away from the tour but he's shown signs this year he's coming back home I was very lucky these draws a number in the top seven because these are effectively the second seed these guys are racing now the second 15 on the world ranking there 70 in the world start early lately anchor to be lucky to start early I think today we could pull out quick time our so far faster than who Dec went to seven and now it's up to more than a second now we're starting to see a serious time put down the anchor flies the Bears per hour and just hold onto the landing well that was close to being a nightmare for Carlo yang could be stayed on his feet it's a fine line in downhill between letting the skis run carrying speed out of the corner and running wide take the he took a longer line cut the speed at all went three nine seconds in front on the clock stopped off the final jump the dear JA yanker will ski into gold medal position that's more like it two minutes zero six point seven one carlo yanker leads the way for switzerland for that time would have put him second fastest for boney miller in the last of the training runs it's a good time and I fully expect that we gotta stick between his skis you saw that with the women's race in in Vancouver the last time around four years ago French guy actually crashed and Turin Li doing that next to the Americans Travis Gann on wearing number seven tweeted yesterday that was happy to get number seven and hoped it would be a lucky number for him sure about the Americans and their white suits I think he trained all your life to race in the Olympic downhill you turn up for the distribution of uniforms you must be thinking a white suit are you kidding yeah it's not exactly what not a bode would have chosen oh I don't imagine two tents behind Travis going on off the Russian trampoline he got a huge amount of night springing up as if he was taking off from a trap Polly big left hand are the big right foot it turns so much pressure to risky hello yank are still leading the way to Switzerland Ben Thompson into second currently for Canada Yan Hooda in bronze medal position also for Canada and Travis Kanaan the young American is having a solid downhill run as he crouched the gate off the Bears brow with his left shoulder aside that he's fully engaged with the course good run so far but any coaches that are watching this know that Yantra was fast in the field was particularly fast from bears growl finished look at this and get August picked up just eight hundreds behind Travis going on showing excellent speed in the middle part of the course he winds down the windows off the theater he'll put pressure on Carlo Jonker here he's burnt down on skis into gold medal position for the USA by seven hundredths of a second Janka goes into second Bank Thompson into third excellent run from Travis get on in the USA I've got to say it wasn't an error-free run you don't think anyone will put down an error-free run today to be honest it's just a question of who can limit the losses and you can generate the most speed Shetty Leandra from Norway starts with number 8 best of the Norwegians axel and spindle starting with 18 today the Yantra had had some success the last Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver when the race is rough at Whistler mountain you took a silver behind Carlo Janka in the giant slalom though and he's not a bad downhiller Yantra ganghong split 25.8 how close his Yan's run he's faster point to 9 in front expect him to be faster through big pan as well pick up speed inside skeezix anyways right skin not pressurizing the outside ski as he went through the traverse there and just dropping height and there's another mistake as he goes over that the controller remember that Jenna was fastest on the bottom third of the course the Android seems to be picking up a few arrows here with four zero he's in good shape and getting better all the time in fact Android fast across the snow 0.74 as he hits the Bears Brown stamps on that left ski makes the next turn visibility getting better all the time you can see a definite shadow across the hill as the Sun starts to shine here in Rose Acuto off the late jump when five seven still in touch still in the hunt for provisional first position here Kjetil Yan's run of norway as he flies the deer jump sets up for the line rides and glides and skis into top spot Yan druid moves into gold medal position for Norway the yams had made some mistakes in this big pan section which is going to decide this race but not as many mistakes as that man made and that was the difference Travis can long though his line off the Bears brow when he flew off that jump he landed very high up on the left and that's what gave him the speed over Yannick on the lower part of the court look at the line of the Bears Brown jump if they falling down low and then having to turn up and then make the gate that's gonna cut the speed off max tracks on his way first of the quartet of Austrians and this means more to the Austrian nation than any other country on earth the men's downhill tie from the last winner for Austria Fritz Strobel Salt Lake City 2002 anis Reichel won the Hanan car make its bill and then had to go for back surgery the day after and was ruled out of the Olympic team it's a big loss and a strikeout has been on the podium how many times Oh three times second and then wins kits full of it max Franzen he's a little bit reckless max Browns he could be a very very great skier but he just hasn't managed to develop that maturity yet he's outside the blue line that's gonna cost awesome speed Kjetil Yasmin leads for Norway Travis get on second for the USA Carlo Jonker third for Switzerland max France point six one behind Direction up there's brow picking up on yawns rude one-fifty one-fifty for the neck split as he flies the late jump for these nearly a full second off the pace now 1st and 3rd currently separated by point three eight quite tight at the top here we go max Bratz tucks in for the line one challenge an Thurid and is into fourth position at this stage three more chances for the Austrians to come Verne a hill next to go the first of the Italians there's Matthias Meyer who will be the next of the Austrian set the quickest time in the second training run in the start hat rider he'll number 10 for Italy you never know what you're going to get with Verna he'll let's see how he deals with the top part of the Olympic downhill course it's made a clean start lots of movement with the upper body used to seeing that from Verna heel will he be fast on this hill well the Italian downhill team has made up all from races up from structural which is the part of Italy that still speaks German was actually part of Austria prior to just after the first world war Dominic Paris go stopped in a hopper it's a film they really are kind of a team apart from the technical team you're all made up Italian speakers very very good technical skiers and a very strong team in a hopper has the ability to ski very very fast split here for Android our leader 128 82 burner heel is just under half a second slower he's been drifting away from yonkers time as he flies the bears brow quite bright sunshine but visibility very acceptable now wasn't so good for the first couple of starters Neyman and who debt but it's solid enough now jump on the lake burn burn a hill he went miles there too much time in the air possibly with 88 of a second behind and when you've got a big jump like that you've got a way up how much you stand up before the job to absorb it and then how far you fly which one's gonna cost you the most time Vern heel is fit for Italy the first of the Italians to go Kjetil Yan's red leads for Norway Travis going is second for the USA Carlo Jonker in bronze medal position for the moment for Switzerland the tears Meyer next to go the exciting young Austrian who set the fastest time in Friday's second training run Lots expected of this young man number 11 matthias fire pushes and skates out of the start gets into his tough position just for a couple of seconds before he has to go to work on the first of the big left foot he turns a little bit line the line now and had to set the edges hard he's a great technical skier I would say he's probably got the best chance for Austria I've actually gone out on a limb and said past this year's where I could get on the podium here today he's off to a promising start two-tenths of a second behind Yang's room and he flies the Russian trampoline looked pretty comfortable in the air and he's not too far away land rude Ganon yanker the 1 2 3 those three holding the provisional medal positions right now the tears Meyer goes to work in the mid part of the course the best we've seen anyone ski that compression left hand apart of reversion it's a little bit of a hit in transition that's where your skis alight yeah he's picking up now green light on for Matthias Mayer heading in the right direction as he flies the Bears brow good high line fully dialed in to the Olympic course sunshine showing the way for the second Austrian to tackle this hill 150 150 for the next split for Yantra and 300 is the advantage that Matthias Meier has not much in it he's looking solid needs to get his head and shoulders down though tuck wore off the final jar Maya tucks in for the line and takes it by a tenth of a second new leader in the Olympic downhill it's the Austria's Matthias fire who skis into gold medal position Jones who has to give a did skeet that left-hand turn as he came out of the Traverse after the Russian trampoline very very clean look at the angles he's a little bit in the backseat their angles he's generating are incredible Johan Clary from France the cost of the French quartet and lost one in training yesterday breach Roche blew his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee following a training incident yesterday so one of the lucky losers got a slot for the French team Clary the first to go you're anchoring more of a glider specialist yeah yeah I'm gonna say there's the technical section on the course the top of the course might prove a little challenging I didn't even manage to get out yeah Johan Clary set the fastest speed in bangin last season of a hunt over a hundred miles an hour he's a great glider but not the best technically and as he came down the Accola valley tickets and got spammed backwards on the course it's very steep French with a good record in the Olympic downhill they've won to the last forum Jonah Peretti a in Nagano 98 London area cheer in 2006 the next man on the hill bode miller the bronze medalist four years ago it's Miller time on downhill day bode miller ready to race and his final Olympic downhill at the age of 36 can he conquer the Olympic down and it's sake it's a good highlight Miller knows he's way down this course he likes this downhill and he's off to a cracking start well what Miller does so well he's get incredible angles on his skis which allows him to run a very tight line in on the gate he's a shorter distance than anyone else and look at that already on a top section he's absolutely flying Miller off the Russian trampoline winding down the windows for a split second a genuine white-knuckle ride there as he had his fist down on the snow cutting across the ice terrific start the bode miller on no mistakes now through big pan little bit wide on that tommix still able to carry the speed point three one in Harrah's smashes that gate Miller is destroying the course on his way down but he's two hundredths of a second behind seems to have just lost a little bit of his speed as he flies the Bears brow he's got work to do on the bottom part of the court has the damage been done when he went through that control gate he set up and took to title I going on a mule kick three still moon going off the lake jump off a second behind bode miller will be absolutely gutted if he fails to get in amongst the medals here in his final downhill Matias fires 206 23 it's too much for bogey no medals today his wife the beach volleyball player Morgan Miller looks on Bodie is out of the medals Mateus Meyer edges closer to one here well Matias Meyer knows that that was a huge huge Scout to take and millet was all over the place that was the leg jump we did that involuntary mule-kick maneuver and Miller is absolutely distraught and blown it so Matias my early to the way for Austria with Shetty Leandra in silver medal position at the moment Travis gone on his third then yanker Phil and Miller with France following on and these are those who have failed to make an impact today but there's plenty more talented races to come including come spin dial and in a hopper along with Eric gay but what a sad sight that is bode miller ends his Olympic downhill career without the title he's desperate for number 18 in the start hunt Aksel Lund single away he goes consistent in training the best downhiller of the season two victories on the season long world cup so far in Beavercreek and again in for me oh and he make it count today oh he took an incredible not that I thought it actually came off for a second I was about to shout that he'd lost the scheme a little power that he puts on not the most doesn't ski with the most finesse beneath the Downers but he is the biggest and strongest man on the circuit no Norwegian has ever won the men's Olympic downhill type and it's been a while since a favorite as one you have to go back to 1988 when Pillman zu bryggen came in and won the gold medal as favourite in calgary spindell's not far away 51 44 and he's just nine hundreds behind Matthias Meyers split time massive jump being off the Russian trampoline nail this turn get that hip in that's better maybe not quite as good as Maier but it's in touch see it's Maya need settle yawns would set and still Travis going on like the early starters with number seven hole to the bronze medal position as the big Norwegian tackles the bottom half of this court this split is key is spin dolly touch he might just have lost his chance to win goal maybe there's an outside chance of a minor medal he smacked on control gate on the Bears Brown don't write him off yet spin down is going to motor down his lower part of the course brief opportunity to glide off the late jump massive flight from spin down and he's closed the gap ever so slightly from point four two two point three - he's found a little bit of extra get up and go and off the final there jump 206 23 to be Swindell he's done he gives the bronze medal position Maya hold on to gold medal position spindle has failed to turn it around yet another Olympics goes by without the favorite being able to climb onto the top spot of the podium well he's not Travis getting out of the medals down to 4th spindle in bronze medal position back to the top right back in action in the shape of Adria Te'o number 19 I mentioned they have a good record they can cause surprises in Olympic downhills Carol Monti a 2002 in Salt Lake City on - and an area in 2006 younger prati a 98 in nagging OHS all slightly surprising gold medalists Audrey and Te'o made a positive start here and this is Green in the early stages two hundredths of a second faster than nine my full expects tale to light that top part of course he likes it sticky like the question is can he carry the speed through the mid part of the course that Matthias mired in it's all for me it's all coming down to this one turn after the Russian trampoline people are getting close here but they lose it lost half a second down there tears already lost some time the boys even got to the toughest part of the course here it is now Russian trampoline landed next section I see incredibly I see couldn't really describe how hard underfoot that section is Te'o has been the fifth best downhiller of the season hasn't had a win he's had the three top five positions in World Cup downhills this season one two in front of the first intermediate leg point three eight behind intermediate number three shows that his chances slipped away one point one nine seconds down Matias Maier holds on to gold medal position Shetty leandroop in silver medal position with excellent spin guys teammate in third in bronze at the moment we could have two Norwegians on the Olympic downhill podium and it's the Austrian who's been the best of them so far Matias Maier and Andrian tayos no threat to the metal positions looking down through the start list Kristoff in a hopeful will be next then Eric gave former world champion then Klaus chrome with all the experience those three with chances of getting in amongst the downhill Matt can't see Klaus Kroll doing anything he's had a real really bad season by his standards he broke his shoulder at the end of season the World Cup Finals news really come back from that injury Eric gay I think could be your outside bet never know what you know African do is I he's a real confidence man if it is his up and he'll ski fast Christoph in a hopper ready to race for Italy number 20 tall slim fast powerful courageous fast powerful and courageous are the three elements that he needs right now to put the pressure on the tear smile an amazing transition lovely transition through his skis up with one side over to the other flying up here 2571 for my time under pressure in our furs had the best start of the lock he's more than half a second quicker at intermediate number one well that was beautiful skiing on the top part of the course just took so much risk the transition from one turn to the other is the key how quickly can you go from one edge to the other and he just threw his feet from one side to the other 51:40 for the next split is he still in front yes he is just under half a second two green lights at the first too strict for Christophe in alpha of Italy that's a beautiful jump off the Russian trampoline little low of the Traverse be setting up high but this left hander that's a good turn that's as good as Maier in a hopper anticipating world maintaining maximum ski to snow contact wherever he can nice high line just a little tall and wide 128 72 for my housing 1/2 a fairing now 2/10 of a second in front Christoph in our number 20 putting pressure on Matthias Myers hold on the gold medal I think in a hop is going to do this I really do the great super Jew skier super-g world champion he's really cool calm and relaxed of the lake jump christoph in a half it is now one hundredths of a second the wrong side one hundredths of a second behind it could all change on the final section off the deer jump in a hopper skis into break Austrian hearts he's got second and silver Maya hold onto Gong and it was just the fact that he ran slightly wide on a deer jump six hundreds of a second yes he's happy with us a medal potentially for Christoph in a hopper Meyer leads in a half a second yonder and holds on to third in a hopper absolutely shattered but thrilled with that silver medal performance Hey still a couple to come who can make a difference this is Eric gay can he put the big race nerves behind him and put one down here like he did eat garbage to win the 2011 Alpine Skiing world championship job was fast in transition edge to edge as good a hot as a forehead but in touch good start for Eric gay in 11 hundreds of a second off the pace why'd you went out of Baba Yaga and into small plan not quite as engaged with the hill as we saw from Meyer and in a hopper half a second back chance of Burt maybe breaking the top five at this stage needs to really put his foot down as he flies the Russian trampoline and drops a little low on the Traverse now these turns are key to Eric gays challenge here this morning in the men's Olympic downhill and it wasn't particularly good it was kind of set twice and he's running slightly wide and again another heavy edge set and not being able to confidently drop his hip into the turn the noise levels going up next door the Austrian television our man a singer X downhill racer I can hear his voice shouting through the wall off the Bears brow Aaron gained nearly a full second off the pace the gold silver and bronze at the moment with Matthias Meyer Christoph ANOVA and Shetty Leandra that's the way it's dad Eric gave the late jump and nearly a full second adrift no chance of making up that sort of time on the bottom part of this course off the deer jump rides and glides for the line and Eric gays ten top ten for the Canadian of the pace of the new Olympic downhill champion from Austria Matthias Mayer metier spire is the Olympic champion he takes the gold medal in the men's downhill ahead of Kristoff in a hopper of Italy Shetty Lee Android of Norway takes the bronze picture representing Austria Germany esta is Wang XI Fiona Impe Steve Eagar so I multistage in after year you
