this is by far the most famous of them all the racetrack here it is stay with us the last time the men's downhill skiers took center stage they were tackling the iconic birds-of-prey downhill and Beaver Creek Colorado since then the speed skiers have picked up momentum of some striking results ageless wonder AK saloon spindle is attacking the World Cup circuit with his usual vigor bolstering a distinguished resume with three podiums this season while also holding the lead for the overall in super-g Dominic Paris is enjoying one of his best seasons on the circuit the Italians first half of the season was highlighted by sweep in Borneo Tomas Dressen was sure to be tallying more podiums in his young career until suffering a terrible crash in Beaver Creek although out for the season his recovery is on schedule right now I feel pretty good I've got no pain anymore in my knee next week I'll have surgery in my left shoulder because it was dislocated as well and Beaver Creek so it's a it's a long way back but right now everything works perfectly and I'm looking forward this weekend the athletes converge on kitzbühel perhaps the most iconic stop of the World Cup downhill season it is the terrain and the severity that really does make this one of the most feared yet most respected of all down competitions on the top kids bill is legendary for good reasons the atmosphere the people the crowd the big party with the put on but it's the course itself that has kind of made the legend kids really special so real down there it's the most difficult downhill even for those who have won here like Thomas Druce and did the previous season Kitt's Bill's unforgiving turns and speed inspire unease when I go to kids bill for sure I'm getting more nervous it's just a different challenge for for you and for your scheme because first of all you need to finish usually if you don't finish and gets bill means you crushed the top is crazy because you just there's no warm-up kind of you just am and it's happening right away there's nothing like the intensity at the start the first 25 seconds are brutal then the middle third it's almost boring then the last third is possibly where the consequences are the highest because basically you're going towards the fencing but then you have to cut left but everything like this side the hill the momentum you're carrying everything wants you to go straight and I mean that's taken up a lot of people and that's why I kiss with legendary it's recognised that only the best can win here and the athletes begin their descent knowing that legends are made out of those who conquer this places brings the energy you got there and have no expectations except for like ripping this you know crap Alice he'll just go there and crush it former champion Daron Rahlves knows how this course can make or break a career a message he witnessed firsthand in 1999 I do remember my first race run there and Patrick or Liam crashed in the compression and that was his last race run of his career you know when you had the best guy in the world laying it into the fence and getting helicoptered out he started kind of like why is it so hard why'd he go down and what was gonna happen when I go through there just two years later Darren would begin to turn trepidation into triumph incredibly reaching the podium seven times across a five-year span and winning the downhill in 2003 I think the best feeling was just coming here and just knowing that I could take like all the risk and and I wasn't concerned about anybody blowing a fast run almost like a superhero feeling you know or if I do crashing me fine you have to attack it like that and the guys are gonna be doing that or give me the ones that are gonna come out on top today swiss phenom marko Dermott is a first-timer in Kitzbuhel with three top tens in the World Cup this season he carries high hopes for bringing that success to kitzbühel he's getting noticed by some of the sport's greatest including his idol former Swiss alpine skier Didier couch I think Marco is in a completely different situation as I was when I came here after what he showed in the World Cup so far this year it's just amazing and the fact that is first-time junior world champion it's just amazing the 21 year old Swiss skier takes his search for speed seriously exploring all training and workout options to prepare for Kitzbuhel when you're in a race week you don't have much time for skiing or ski touring or doing other stuff and during the trainings it's really fun sometimes if you can do something different enjoy the mountains - it isn't just racing it's just being in the nature skiing for myself I'd really love to ski in the mountains in powder fresh slopes during the mornings you're working in every training and you're testing your new skis and stuff we do the video analyzed after each training and discuss what was good what was less good so we can improve we have a really really cool team we are all good friends and push each other during the training but also in our private life we're hanging out together and have a really good atmosphere I love my job now it's a job and I think the most important thing is to enjoy life it couldn't be any cooler if you can make your hobby to your job and enjoy it so this is my ultimate goal welcome to kids build in what is often described as the biggest downhill of the season joined by the others setting out to prepare for the day's race Marco feels anxious but confident as he looks ahead to his first attempt at this downhill I think the weather isn't that perfect but the slope is very nice and you think you can ski really well I think it won't be different to all the other races I just have to ski my race and don't risk too much and then hopefully it's gonna be a good race for me with a viewpoint built over many years axel loons fin dolls take on the conditions leads to a difficult decision sit this one out and protect his problematic knee build up to this be gracious beat this extreme and icy conditions and populations in Kitzbuhel sadly right now something that just doesn't work too well for me I have you know bone-on-bone not much suspension in there anymore and when it gets super bumpy and I say kind of something's gotta give and sadly it's the knee that takes the text meaning [Music] Dominic Paris remains up for the challenge for he seems to thrive in these conditions course looks pretty good that's the conditions are perfect this very icy he knows that it takes more than just talent to confront this he'll mental discipline is essential at the age of 18 Dominic had the unique experience of leaving home to live and work on a farm in Switzerland he credits much of his success in skiing to that back-breaking work and time away from civilization the Italian twice a winner here before he's one of the big favorites I tried my best to do something special in the races when you're in good shape and you know you did a lot of work you have good feeling on the skis and everything you can push more on this limit I think he's really good in focusing on the race because if he makes mistakes in training and he's not fast in training you always have to keep him in mind race day because mostly his skiing best on race day he's got those typical downhill skills it used to be almost more skiers like that that they would be really good at some of the skills needed in downhill but maybe they didn't care so much about the more technical events and there's not that many guys left like that then the sport really needs those characters the pure dynamic skiers we're counting down the minutes to the start of that downhill number 6 of 9 on the men's world cup - this is by far the most famous of them all in their minds the skiers can picture the overall leaderboard for the downhill globe entering this race Italy's Dominic Paris holds forth Austria's max fron stands in third Austria's vincent creek mayer grips second and Switzerland's biet Foyt's claims the lead he's also first out of the top contenders to race today Fiat voices out on course current World Cup downhill leader for it seems to just be flowing well with the mountain right now point 7 1 of a second up into top position it's a huge advantage that was brilliant scheme from Fiat fight the hill is much less kind to the second and third place skiers on the World Cup downhill leaderboard as Vincent Creek Mayer and Max Franz fall short there's an injury for Max France such as the brutality of the racetrack then the focus shifts to Dominic and while the misfortune of the previous two skiers may have brought him more jitters in the final seconds it's a force the 29 year old welcomes little bit of nervous you you need them for for bringing the energy and on the course and you can push more on the limit Dominik attacks the demanding course laser focused on capturing a third win on this treacherous downhill dominate Paris twice a winner here before the rougher the tougher the better for this Italian skier Paris getting thought around in the compression but getting it back together for the carousel an hour wider line than we've seen you slightly off the line here through the redbull arch now onto that right foot here he comes one of the quickest for the speed gun tucks it out 157 zero to our sir just concentrate on skiing to stay on the skis to push really hard and to bring the speed everywhere for newcomer Marco Dermott a respectable 24th place finish leaves the youngster with positives for his next time around yeah of course it was really difficult from the top to the bottom and I tried to keep clean and some parts like hopefully can ski faster in the next few years but I'm really really happy I made it the big story of the day could be titled Dominic's dominance leading with his incredible 3rd downhill win in Kitzbuhel very emotional it's very special to win just one time he about three times that's that's unbelievable the celebration only picks up steam with the night and the party wouldn't end there for Dominic two days later in the super-g he reaches the podium again finishing in third amplifying his legendary status in Kitzbuhel to Bodum's then kits bow that's very special coming up on the next episode it's the technical skiers turn at kitzbühel the most challenging slalom slope on the World Cup tour it is so unusual normally you say ok this is not a ski slope there are so many really hard and sharp burrows so every turn is different than the other one appeal sometimes hold on to your seats because this will be all fast I would predict this is by far the most famous of them all the racetrack here Monaco mountain is called the right
