[Music] hey guys welcome back to the shop for another week of Saturday night special so we made it back to the shop here Abbi nah we had a fantastic vacation up in Colorado great time up there it was my first time in Colorado and it was just absolutely gorgeous and beautiful and really enjoyed being able to see that area of the country but we made it back here and you know getting back to work and trying to get some our work and our content created for you guys and I think I've got some fun videos for you so I wanted to get back to our our last our previous chip trip whenever we went up to a flex arm and we got we picked up the new flex arm machine and in this particular episode I'm going to we're going to go ahead and get it unloaded and I want to show you the modifications that I made to the table right here to get the power unit installed here on the table because this is where I plan on mounting the the Flex arm right here on this table so we've got some welding and fabrication footage that we're going to put in this particular episode that'll be on this table right here and I also want to I think I'm going to give you a second episode for this S&S because I want to share some of the tools that I found whenever we were on our road trip to Ohio I picked up some pretty unique wrenches and a couple other tools there and I took some footage of that to share so I think we're gonna do a two-parter and in the second part we'll come back and we're going to do some viewer mail because I do have some more viewer melet's come in and I want to show you some of those tools I picked up okay so hopefully you'll stick around come back check out part tool and we will talk talk about some some neat tools that I found while picking on the road in Ohio and Kentucky and Tennessee and Alabama but just to quickly recap again on the vacation I just want to reiterate that uh that Abby and I really really loved going up to Colorado and I especially loved going up there and seeing those places I I've always had a fascination for Colorado and the rock Mountains I've never had the opportunity to go I never took the opportunity to go until now you know finally finding the right life partner that I could share those opportunities with is what I was waiting for and I finally found that with Abby you know that's that's why I get to go on these trips and these journeys and these adventures so we had a great vacation we did it Road Trip style we went into Denver and you know we did a lot of driving and that was the only thing is that we we were moving around a lot but that was one one of the ways for me to be able to see a lot of different towns and cities and points of interest in the Rocky Mountain era area there was to keep moving in seeing a different places so I captured a lot of those places on video and they're gonna be on the other channel the a-bomb Adventures channel so if you don't know about that please check that out a bomb adventures I'm gonna have plenty of videos there sharing that journey of our vacation over there now there is one place that we went that I'm gonna have either one or two videos on this channel and that was the Durango Silverton railroad and that was one of the highlights of the trip was that ride through those mountains up to Silverton on beautiful you had a little mishap on the way back we actually missed our train it was just some events going on there the train was delayed and we ended up missing our train on way back and we ended so we caught the bus because they have bus rides back so we rode the bus back and while on the bus there was a couple of the guys that worked the train that was behind us on the bus and I got to talking to them and they worked one of the guys works in the shop he was a machinist there so I got talking to him and he goes what when we get back if you'd like I'll show you the machine shop so he took me on a tour in the machine shop so I got footage of the machine shop there and Durango Silverton so I'm gonna have that video to share on this channel here and I think you guys will like it they've got a cool machine shop there full of big machines and a lot of heavy iron and it's just a really neat place so I'm gonna share that with you but really enjoyed that trip and I do look forward to going back again that's definitely a place that I see Abby and I going possibly annually going up there because there's a lot of places that we did not get to go that I that we definitely want to go again so beautiful country up there all you guys that live up in the Colorado area great country up there you're you're lucky lucky to live in that area but really enjoy that so anyway enough with that and let's get on to our fabrication footage for this week and I hope you guys enjoy ok we are getting the Flex arm unloaded this morning I wasn't sure how this was gonna go and I haven't been getting much video of this this is the first clip but so this is the power unit right here and so it was sitting over there on the pallet they had it bolted down and once I got that unbolted unstrapped I was able to actually take my big table here and roll it up to the next to the tailgate there and just kind of slide the unit walk it back and actually set it on that walk it up on the edge of the table and slide it back up on there and that worked really well I wasn't I just wasn't sure how this was gonna go and so the Flex arm itself is not near as heavy as the power unit so I was able to kind of pull the pallet back and now I've got my plastic sheet up here on the table and I've just got the Flex arm up on that and I'm just going to start pulling it up on there manually like that up on the plastic and protect it and we'll get it up on the table now I do need a forklift out here that is one of the things that I that I really need and want and hope to invest in one of these days if I can find the right one for the right deal we got her unloaded everything went fine no damage and there she is as a big flex arm all of the tap holders should be in this box here as well as the the mounting plate the mounting plate that goes into this right here will be mounting to the table and of course the power unit and then we're gonna have to do some electrical work here we've got a wire up a plug there and we got the sirens coming so give me a sec this is going to be a high voltage unit that was that was the only issue I do not have high-voltage three-phase here at the shop so we're gonna have to do a step-up transformer so that's one of the that's one of the problems that I've got to deal with so we're going to have to invest in a transformer and I'll have to have some professional electrical help to come into the shop and wire that up so that I can get this thing hooked up properly there's a better look at the power unit 480-volt you got a control panel pulls out right here hey guys welcome back to the shop so I'm getting ready to make a modification I'm getting ready to start a modification on my big heavy work table there that's when I built several months back for the shop here and what I'm gonna do is I'm going to modify that table to accept this power unit for my Flex arm alright so what I had planned to do is be able to mount this power unit underneath the table there on the shelf okay the problem is is that I need one inch of height that's it's one inch too short underneath that table for this power unit to slide up underneath there so I'm going to make a modification to the bottom to allow that and the reason why I'm going to do that is that that'll allow me to use up some of that space in the middle of the shop floor and keep one thing out of the middle of the shop alright now I will point out that this flex arm that's power unit right here does come with a wheel kit and that's this kit right here you got one swivel wheel and then two Castor's there you know two solid plastic wheels so this power unit comes with you know little axles right there one on each side so you can put wheels on it and in both the other little swivel caster to the front to make this a mobile cart if you choose to and be able to roll it around and they also sell these with another cart that these will mount on that's got the fixture table up on the top that the Flex arm will amount to as well but in my case what I wanted to do to maximize the space that I have is that we're going to utilize this table right here and my plans was to mount the Flex arm right here on this end of the table and then we're gonna put the power unit right up underneath here on this end of the table there and then I'm gonna have power coming from this side of the wall right over there so I'll have a hook right here I'll have a power cord where it just kind of hangs up right there and then when I want to use the Flex arm I'll bail to just take the cord go over there and plug it into the wall and then turn the machine on that's what my plan is but as I said we are one inch too short between this right here and what I need just just enough clearance is 30 inches so I'll give a little bit extra clearance for it to fit so what my plan is you see I've got some 2x2 square tubing welded down here going across just to support the legs and what we're going to do is come out here 22 inches I'm going to cut these two supports off well move this wood out of the way cut those off and I'm going to drop it down and come over here and weld it some more so what we're going to do is just drop it down two inches alright and then I got this plate right here this is a 22 by 22 square piece of quarter-inch plate that I bought from my buddy Joe down at the welding shop and then I'll lay this down there and weld it on top so the power unit will just slide in on top of this piece of plate that's going to be welded in down there and then that should give me plenty of clearance right here up underneath the the top of the underneath the table top there for the power unit so that's what the plan is anyway all right and then I'm going to leave these I'm not going to do anything with these little axles these are going to be just left alone and I'm gonna hold on to the axles because there may be a come a time later on down the road where I do want this to be more of a mobile unit and put it somewhere else in a shop maybe a future shop and build utilize it that way and then here's the flex arm just to you know once again here's the here's the actual unit I'm really looking forward to getting this thing mounted up and and using it so first things first let's go ahead and get started with our table modifications okay [Music] I may try this a different way I was planning on flipping this thing over onto its face and doing it upside down we made you standing when you may just pick it all the way up put it on my metal stands and just do it that way let me try it that way I've got a magnet I can put on that face and pick this thing all up just straight up just the way it is let's use this sirloin scale and see if we can get a estimated way don't want this table this looks like it's going to be right at the thousand pound more thousand pounds looks like it maybe just a touch over so we're right at the limit of what the the magnets supposed to be good for thousand pounds so this should be a safety factor involved and I always I'm not going to do it with the scale on there I'll take it off and do it but we always take it lift it just up off the table I mean off the floor and then bang it around a little bit give it some jars and some some shakes and see if that magnet tries to fall off there or pull off I'm using the magnet because that's going to give me maximum height be able to go up to the lift and it's going to give me just enough to pick this thing up and set the table on the stands here that's what I was talking about with testing it give it some jars and make sure that it ain't gonna just snapped off there so hopefully we should be good to go putting the screw jack in the middle there to help support the weight in the center so when I cut these supports the center of the table doesn't try to sag you can kind of do the same thing above there with the magnet but I can get a better feel of it just right here doing that with the screw versus trying to pull on that chain fall to hold the top of it so that's got some solid support there to keep it from trying to sag on me so just double check in between this brace here the bottom of the plate there we're right at 29 inches tubing being two inches there so that would be 31 inches wants to drop it down underneath that double check to our height on the power unit here clicking the bottom you can see we're just shy of 30 inches there so I'm going to use the six-inch Metabo using my osborne cutoff wheels these are the 45,000 stick cutoff disc we're using to cut that off right there alright ready to go got my hearing plugs in got my safety shield on I'm ready to go [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right got the crossmembers cut out of there got the flap dis and already de bird all this we've dressed the sides on the bottom right there cuz I want a good clean area for welding we've dressed these down real good with the flap disc as well so next step I got another length of two-inch square tubing over there by the saw we're gonna cut and I'll probably cut them say maybe 24 inches that would give me about two inches of overlap here and it will well them so that they'll they'll be flush to the bottom side of this so that drops the surface down exactly two inches will butt them up on this tube there do a fill it will it all the way around that side there I don't know if I'll build a well the bottom or not but we'll at least get three sides on this one do that on both sides right there so I'll go get those cut get them cleaned up because they're kind of rusty and we'll come back and get them welded in alright we got our two inch tubes cut cleaned up we got our ends dressed where we're gonna do our weld so we'll stack them in here like so we're just gonna butt them up there to this side bottom up to the the four inch square tube like that and I'm going to use my fireball mini square right here just we're just going to clamp this to the side of that tube to create a plane to clamp this one too as well something like so just like that and don't forget you guys can go over there to fire ball tools and use promo a bomb 79 and get a 5 percent discount on any of a stool z' over there he's always got that promo open for all of the a-bomb 79 viewers we get this clamped in here somewhere like so something like that just to create something too but this one up too I got another clamp here that's kind of ready [Music] this one held in place and then we'll I'll get another seat clamp and pull it over against the square I want to measure this distance between the bottom of the plate and make sure that we're even it's not kicked at an angle if it's that a little bit it ain't gonna really hurt anything I just want to make sure that it's that it's close so I'm just using my 36 inch scale for this here looks like we're at 30 and 3/4 so by the time I put my plate on that meat that'll be 30 and a half inches that's gonna give me at least a half inch clearance for the power unit in there let me see if it's thirty two three quarters on this end here just clearing the will up there at the very top so we look good there 2:30 and 3/4 so I'm surprised how square we are across there so it looks good we're in the center of the tube there so I'm gonna go ahead and get this get the welder over here we'll get it tacked off and then get the other side tacked all we're gonna go ahead and use this nozzle dip by weld aide [Music] [Music] I'm finished well then these two cross pieces in there that's all done and I went ahead and cut this this piece loose from the other two that was removed this was originally just kind of about right in there and I'm gonna go ahead and weld it in right there we'll weld it on the top and bottom and on the other side there and kind of give this a little bit of support where I'm gonna put the two by tens here and give it a little support there on the end and just a little bit of extra bracing in there as well so just repurpose in that piece putting it back in there and just using it up okay [Music] [Music] [Music] perfect alright so not going to be a whole lot of welding on that I'm just going to give it a few stitches I'm going to weld it to the table legs right there and probably give it a couple welds on that side just to hold it in place that's really all it means all right guys we'll all the fab and welding work is now completed on the table and next step that I'm going to do now is I want to go ahead and clean I'm going to scuff up the legs again we've got a little bit of this original surface rust that was on it that's trying to come through again so I'm going to go ahead and just rub it down with some scotch brite and I'm gonna coat it down with some CRC rust converter again and I'm gonna go pick up some black spray-paint and I'm gonna go ahead and paint the table legs black give it a get a nice coat of paint make make it look good before I set it back down so there's our finished modifications there I went ahead and put a stitch there in the center on both sides just to kind of make sure that we're nice and solid so real happy with the way it's turning out and I'll bring you guys back later and show you show you how it's looking cleaned up alright I've gone around all all the the legs and the braces and scuffed it with scotch brite there got it all wiped off and cleaned off I'm going to put another coat of this this is a CRC rust converter right here go ahead and brush it on and it'll kill all this rust that's on here and put a nice primer coat on there so that I can just paint right over on top of that here's about a halfway progress shot of the going on with the rust converter you can see as it dries it kind of turns black almost looks like black paint but it goes on very easy it's very thin kind of looks like milk as you brush it on you see this one's not done yet you just finish that leg it creates a really good bond coat or a primer coat for the paint [Music] got all the rust converter brushed on I was the last little bit they're still still drying I'll let that dry overnight I'm gonna come out here first thing in the morning and start shooting the black paint on it looking forward to seeing this thing ready so we can get our power unit over here mounted up on this table well the table mods are done and it is painted just letting the thing dry now I'm gonna let it sit for the rest of the day today is Sunday by the way and just gonna let the thing finish drying we'll get out here probably get out here tomorrow morning bright and early go ahead and get the feet screwed back into it and get it set back down on the ground and then begin our process of getting the power unit down and slid into place right there what we'll probably do is I'll get it picked up with the gantry the rolling gantry set it on that pallet jack and and roll it over here and I should be able to just slide it right into place there using the the pallet jack all right we got the table set back down onto the floor everything is leveled up ready to go I've even got the two boards cut and in place and it looks good real happy with that we're getting ready to pick up the power unit get it picked up set down on the pallet jack so that we can get it properly mounted on the table right there that's the reason why we're doing all these modifications to get it mod to sit right there so it would fit the only dumb move that I made this whole time so far was that board right there I actually cut the wrong end of it I was using one side of those boards were a little bit more dirty than the other side because I had used them whenever I had moved the shaper and I wasn't thinking when I cut the end I was supposed to cut the other end so I've got one dirty side I was supposed to mirror the the cut flip it over but it don't matter it's just wood it's just a shelf down there so anyway we're gonna go ahead and pick this thing up you see I've got her we've got our blocked up on our wedges here and just use my pry bar and wedged up all four corners to get it up so that we could put our scrap and then we've got it strapped here and we got to hook to the chain fall and we are ready to pick this up I'm going to make sure that it's picked up and level so that I can move the table out of the way and then lower it down onto the pallet [Music] all right there she is looks like it worked out just the way I wanted about an inch clearance there and you see the side clearance was just for those axles there got a little clearance on these sides is for that and then the the unit itself sticks out just a little bit faster the table is just as a handle for pulling it around whenever you use in the you know the wheel kit and on the backside you got this stuff right here but I've got to kind of split to where it's just about even you know with the edge of the table if you come line up with the edge there on both sides it's just about even so what I'll probably do once I start getting this thing hooked in so we've got our power cord here probably going to put me like a hook somewhere here and I'll just build a hang that cord up and then we want to use this unit you know I'm going to take that thing I'm gonna have it to where it actually plugs into a receptacle on the wall and then when we're not using it unplug it coil it up hang it up there on the table and then our our actual flex arm is going to mount right about here in the corner of the table and that's going to be the next phase right there is getting the mount plate mounted right here we'll have to do some drilling and tapping and then getting that big heavy beast of a machine stood up and mounted up on the corner of the table right there that's going to be the next phase though so I will point out that this is the it's 480 volts so what I'm going to have to do is I've got to invest in a step-up transformer to be able to run this because I don't have a high-voltage three-phase here I do have three phase but mine is low-voltage so I'm gonna have to have electrician help me run the proper circuit for this machine and install a transformer that we'll hook into so we're still still working on that but little at the time we got our table done and and i'ma start getting the electrical system situated here and lined up and in the meantime we're going to try to start getting our flex arm itself mounted and maybe get that installed next okay so everything's coming along really good [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you
