Smith & Wesson M&P 22 Magnum Range Review

[Music] come on hey Patrick with KY gunco we're Barry do a review on a caliber and a platform that I typically despise and I hate doing reviews on these things because typically they're finicky pieces of crap and that's just being quite blunt and pretty straightforward with you the 22 Magnum in a semi-automatic platform in a pistol configuration and sometimes even in a rifle configuration can be extremely finicky on the ammunition it can it it will accept there's a lot of variety and pressures on 22 magnum historically a lot of Manufacturers have shot away from them even Ruger at one point Mr Bill Ruger I think famously said he will never ever try to make a 22 magnum again after the 1022 Magnum debacle if some of you guys might or might not know but 1022 the 1022 rifle the most popular semi-automatic during fire rifle in America was at one time made in a 22 magnum did not work out quite so well and they just kind of threw Ruger even said no more never tried again not to say they won't but a new manufacturer has thrown their hat in the ring and I think they got some promise at making a pistol a semi-automatic pistol that will accept most of the standard ammunition out there the jacketed ammunition this is the brand new Smith and Wesson m p 22 magnum okay let's show you some features of the brand new 22 magnum before we get to shooting first of all this is a 22 Winchester magnum it's semi-automatic the key component of this firearm is the tempo barrel system and we'll explain a little bit more about that here in a second 4.35 inch barrel has a green fiber optic sight we have topped it off with a Vortex Red Dot as you see so this is Red Dot capable in the smaller Footprints it does have the rear sight with it and I'll tell you why here in a minute we put the vortex on there as opposed to some of the other manufacturers it does come with two magazines 30 round magazines 30 round seems to be kind of the standard capacity for some automatic pistols and the 22 magnum these days there are other competitors out there than 22 magnum I will kind of note that some of the other competitors are a lot more they feel clunkier they feel chunkier in the hand this is a pretty slim line pistol picatinny rail it has a really nice trigger on it we'll show you the trigger here in a second of course rear cocking serrations it is a true ambidextrous pistol you can switch the magazine release to either side it does have a slide release on both sides again it's internal Hammer fired let's talk about this Tempo barrel system and I'm semi pumped about it because I have a feeling this is not going to let me down I have done other 22 magnum reviews in the past we have had to be extremely ammo sensitive or be real picky on the ammunition that we used this new Tempo barrel system allows us to use a variety of ammunition and when I say a variety of ammunition I'm not joking here even in there I'll try to get a zoom in close of the owner's manual this is the owner's manual but check it out so as long as the bullets with Full Metal Jacket total metal jacket jacket at hollow point jacket at soft point or and here's the key component because most of these manufacturers this does not work in the semi-automatic platform in a pistol on most rifles even some rifles jacketed bullets with a polymer tip like the Hornady V-Max this pistol should function reliably and with normal cleaning the reason being this you know a normal 22 magnum ammunition is roughly around 40 grains that's that seems to be a good average you go to the polymer chip it's quite a bit faster it's at 30 grains so a lot of Manufacturers have had a lot of trouble in the past years trying to get a variety of the 22 Magnum shells out there to work on their platforms I think Smith Wesson has solved this problem we're going to test out and find out we are testing the Hornady V Max which is again the 30 grain we have some Remington jacketed hollow points and the 40 grain kind of just a good average 22 magnum I told you and I said I would tell you why we put the vortex defender on there we put the vortex Defender CCW on there we did try some other platforms but the cool thing about Vortex that the other platforms did not have vortex has thought about you guys the consumer every manufacturer that has a red dot out there for some reason they all want to use different screws there's not a uniform now there's a uniform footprint so most of your smaller concealed carry red dots will fit this pistol but Vortex is one of the few if not the only one that I've found that carries all the different screws for all most of the major manufacturers you know here's a there's one for your Glocks Ruger five sevens your Hellcat there's your cigs your canix your CZ P10s your H and K's this one's for the Smith Wesson 2.0 which is what we use to put on here FN 509 Sig 365 the list goes on and on so Vortex was cool enough and thoughtful enough so if you bought this red dot there's a 99 chance that you're going to be able to mount that sucker without frustration because it comes with all the screws so that's that's pretty daggone cool you can create a Vortex for doing that if I'm going gripe about anything there's two grapes I could have and they're minor grapes at this first I would like some front caulking serrations you know once you put a red dot on here it kind of starts taking up some of the real estate you can always kind of grab it by the Red Dot but I try not to grab it by the Optics the other thing and it's probably not a legitimate grate but if you look and I try to tilt this down but it might tilt it back up if you can see the barrel see how the barrel dropped Bound in there this is actually a shroud around the barrel this is part of that Tempo system the tempo barrel system that makes this firearm work but if I had another gripe and hopefully this is only these are the only two gripes I have about this pistol but I'd love to have it threaded barrel not saying that Smith Wesson is not working on a way to put a thread at Barrel on here I would love to have a suppressor and I'm sure front cocking serrations are some other variations of this probably in the performance center will eventually be coming and probably solve that uh the minor things that uh hopefully this is all that we have to complain about all right we got our Target at uh 10 yards we put the Red Dot on there Vortex Red Dot we have two magazines loaded with 30 rounds each the first one we are going to do we are going to do the Remington hollow points which should have no issue whatsoever and see how this puppy does foreign rapid fire this was the normally the part if you ever watched any of my videos normally I go ahead and say hey this is the part that we've uh it's a brand new gun it's never been test fired and all that good stuff that's not the case I actually took this thing home last night again because I despise doing 22 magnum reviews so bad I took it home and ran a couple mags through it just so I didn't waste the camera guys time behind you there we have a one-man marketing team here at KY gunco he does all of our print does all of our email marketing does all of our videos to get some of his time is usually a tough to get them to film in here and we have wasted so much time in our past doing 22 semi-automatic platforms uh with failed results that uh we almost just gave up on it but I went out and tested it at two mags last night with both those ammunitions and I was pleasantly surprised so this is my second go around with the pistol rapid fire now let's try the Hornady so this is the Hornady V-Max got the little red tips on it typically if something is going to give a semi-automatic platform some type of fit some type of problem usually the polymer tip the Hornady V mixes is the ammunition to do that not that it's bad ammunition it's good stuff but you know this is historically kind of a varmint load more made for rifles more made for both action rifles but Smith Wesson says it should work so let's see what we got another 30 rounds Hornady V-Max that is a fireball thrower in that V-Max but uh again it's coming out substantially faster than the Remington 30 rounds this would be about my fourth or fifth magazine through it again I told you I fired a couple last night when I went home this is our two mags here in front of you guys with two varieties of ammunition without a hiccup pull the Target in just so you guys can see it again rapid fire with my accuracy skills but it does look like a little little bigger group you know maybe it doesn't like the V-Max as well as it does like the Remington as far as pistols I have 15 to 20 000 guns in stock at any given time here at KY gunco we ship guns all over of my gun my pistol that I'm going to carry on my my Honda Pioneer just a good Farm Gun I'll probably keep the hollow points in there maybe even some of those spear go dots if I can find some here recently but if you're looking for a reliable semi-automatic 22 magnum platform American manufacturer decent warranty on it that it will accept the Red Dot this brand new Smith and Wesson 22 magnum is
