[Music] just a beautiful day hae-won's how're you doing [Music] now we're heading to my residence just gonna gather my wood and put it inside put it inside my house and keep it dry from the rain and the elements [Music] I've had that job at the same company for twenty years you know I've never been unemployed never been homeless this is my first experience of being homeless and jobless when I came here one had many people who one night as many of these now so I was able to plot my land I say my land where I'm where I can stick my tent and I got a tent and you know I just like the Pioneers did we you know you set up shop and we went from there you know so you know you start gathering and building up stuff through the weeks and times and months and then your family you get to a comfortable state where you know you can call it home [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so we're here at tent city Lakewood New Jersey about six miles down this way to the east we have the Atlantic Ocean of course North if you go north about 60 miles you've got Manhattan 60 miles west you've got Philadelphia so the camp goes down this way quite a ways it's a very big camp it covers a lot of area and so there's a probably about seven people that live down this way and then there's there's people that live down this way and the main part of the campus is down in this direction we've got something like this it lasts for about a year in fact we're gonna have to replace this tent very soon as if er is broken the zippers on the windows are broken so yeah I'm gonna be going to the store to buy a new tent for this fellow real soon so again a tent will typically last about a year and then we've got to replace it this is one of our outhouses again it's a very simple outhouse it's the old-fashioned just a pit in the ground and with a little building over top with a toilet seat and so when it gets filled up we just move it over fill that went in and in start a new one now over here is our chapel we have services there at 12:30 on Sunday we have our kitchen over here and shower and our new kitchen which is going to be more like a dining hall that you can see almost all the corners of the camp are being filled up we have about 75 individuals right now I in anticipate by the summer time we'll probably have about a hundred people living in tent city as if things keep on going the way they are right now these are our neighbors these are all pretty new tents here there weren't any tents over here till about a week or two ago and also that tent there is new so we were really far away from everybody now I discussed the tenant the campus getting so much bigger I know people are moving over this area well this is our winter tent and you can see it's been really insulated this is where I cook [Music] timely the t-shirts here [Music] this here is one of our little kitty cats that was born in the camp and we've got three of them that are very friendly they'll jump in your bed at night time and you know don't go into anyone's tent and go to sleep or look for food and so they're very friendly you know people see this as something freakish you know something out of the ordinary something kind of you know bizarre this tent city but you know what it is if you if this was you know in the West you know 100 years ago you know this would have been a mining town you know and people would have thought this is very normal this is you know a mining town this is this is a community [Music] if you look at history of every city in the world every city has some squatter routes Paris had squatters who lived outside it was generally the people who lived right around the city gate or the wall that protected the city during the medieval period and or the lands that were either disputed or hard to build on here in New York Central Park was originally a squatter domain in the Upper East and Upper West Side's were completely occupied by squatters there were squatters in London there were squatters in San Francisco I mean this is not an unknown historical phenomenon the squatter buildings were built of wood they were built of materials that degrade over time and so they disappeared that means that we don't tend to see this history the word slum is particularly it was particularly valid in 19th century Britain but it's been indiscriminately exported over the whole world and it's completely inappropriate so I mean people have tried to find better ways of expressing it like informal settlement or community or squatter community or migrant communities I mean there all sorts of euphemisms though but there isn't really a satisfactory term for it the communities of poor people basically but it's a rather a mouthful to say communities of poor people so people say oh well you know sums and in the 19th century London was much more like the great cities of the south today [Music] returned bidonville no Jose Chavez contraction Dumuzi at another party cute and over the asset and [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] you go to the poorest slum in in Asia and see how people work and strive and and and labor for nothing so it's there's obviously a falsehood that people here who say they became rich on their own merits does it mean that the the poor woman who were who walks five kilometres to get enough clean water for the day has no marriage it doesn't it doesn't stack up it doesn't make sense poverty itself changes what is poverty everyone in the world feels poor in relation to the limitless capacity of industrial society to produce and I think that's the secret of psychological poverty that in a sense everybody feels poor even the extremely rich and the world to do they think about not what they have but how much what they could do with if only they had more [Music] [Applause] well it's a transformation of the world basically I think it's inevitable I think that this is a trend that has been becoming more and more and more pronounced and no one really knows when we crossed that line that 50% barrier you know some people said it in 2001 some people dated it to 2005 some people are still saying oh the world just became more than half urban but the reality is that we are the an urban planet well it's partly to do with the industrialization of Agriculture so that of course if you if you once you start using industrial inputs whether it's fertilizer or seeds whatever it may be that have to be bought in and it goes onto a it becomes much it's right back it's rationalized however irrational the consequences may be which means that farms require less less human labour fewer inputs so more and more people are excluded from sufficiency from a secure livelihood in the countryside and naturally they are drawn to the cities where of course there is the employment of labor in both the service sector and in the industrial sector [Music] people who've been subject to a kind of the elemental poverty of poor harvests of unpredictable climate of floods and droughts they learned how to cope with that when they come into the cities when people come into the industrial industrialized society they have to learn how to be poorer in a different way and I think what we've seen in the last 3040 years has been a great a crash course in poverty in market derived poverty which is a very different thing from as it were the natural poverty which has been the condition of humanity from time immemorial [Music] [Applause] [Music] SIA are estrogen catastrophic epidemic in famine the problem enough announced moving on well she had the stately late adult many or at the console and later and if you know hundreds of people that I spoke with while I was doing the research for shadow cities had started out in business first they came to the city and they got their little one-room and then they cut a hole in the wall and they ran a little unofficial store out of their one-room and that was how they made their money they sold you know it might be tissues it might be paper it might be schoolbooks it might be beer it might be whatever the community whatever they wanted to sell in the community and that's how they started out but when you're in the standardized high-rise you're not allowed to do that so you can't have your small business right in your apartment because the authorities don't like that and the government prevents it so suddenly you're given a home but deprived of the income that will enable you to pay rent on that huh which is a totally counterproductive strategy so in all these ways the one size fits all let's redevelop this community immediately proposal it's just not desirable for people it's not going to give them a home that benefits them [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you have to destroy the middle-class myth that poor that poor communities are full of cheats and thieves and rogues and addicts you need to we need we need to get over that but that's not to fall into the other trap of saying that there are no element of criminality or pathology or destructiveness in the slums because there are it strikes me that slum is a word that separates it's a barrier between us in the non slum world and then and and slum indicates everything that we fear and dislike and loathe about again to put it in quotes those people [Music] my thesis is that these are normal urban neighborhoods this is what urban development is in the 21st century to me it's much more honorable and much more honest to say that they're squatters and they arrived in the city to find work and for socio-economic reasons that are far out of their control they could find work but could not find housing and so they're forced to do this this is a squatter community out of necessity [Music] thank you my great-grandparents went through the Great Depression to where a great grandfather had to leave the home and go out in search of work and leave the family behind and I you know kind of joked with my kids saying you know you will see me again I'm not leaving but I do have to go find work you know and and unfortunately it has been done before in history I'm not gonna fail you know I'm intelligent I'm not a bum you know I have worked a long long time and I have to continue to work [Music] you [Music] let's open up with a word of Prayer Heavenly Father we thank thee for another day that that was given us the breath of life another day to enjoy all the wonders of thy creation father we even thank thee for preserving us here in tent city to this day I thank you again for watching out for our basic needs father we thank you for the barbecue yesterday we thank you for the barbecue tomorrow here we have a Township who brought us to court to evict us from tent city they want this property and they asked the judge just to Vic Toews squatters out of tent city their just homeless people so we're going to win this victory and not only are we gonna win the victory for us here in tent city you and you and you but you know what we're winning the victory for the next guy coming down the road just headin down the road and he's saying I need a place to stay we're gonna be here for that guy - we're winning a victory for him when I just fighting for our own a little housing here we're fighting for somebody else's housing that's coming down the road we're doing the moral thing we're doing the ethical thing we're doing the righteous thing thank thee in Jesus name Amen okay god bless you guys [Music] [Music] did you find them there oh you did good as usual how about how about the the others with theirs dodo around I'm sure they'll be here sooner or later why aren't you having your soup yes I'm starving Fallon and I met in Philadelphia and we have been married 41 and a half years and we've been I would say happily married wouldn't you say marry well both since at most this time and we have we have a lot of things common feelings about life and common interest literature and and nutrition and ecology and history and science and stuff like that a music and art you know you can't leave that music I was in the textile industry textile design industry in New York and I did very well at the end of my career I was making a little over a hundred thousand and I was a design director but that entire industry has collapsed and it's just all gone to China and so I knew we would have to change our lifestyle completely so a friend of mine she had mentioned tent camps and I had thought at that time literacy years her earlier Michael and I always wanted to live in the country and I can't fill out as a kid maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea for us so we looked on the internet and the only really close by one we could find any information on the steeps so we called Steve and he said yeah he had room here and here we are ever since it's a little over two years my purpose intensity or my function intensity is um it's kind of multifaceted you know I serve a couple of different purposes being here one is organizer you know organizing the camp on trying to make sure that all the supplies we have enough supplies in camp to meet the basic needs of the homeless it's also making sure that the piece is kept in tent city that people get along and that if there is something an argument or a disagreement you know I'm there to try to mediate try to solve the problem I've had a little conflict with the the powers-that-be the authorities almost from the beginning of working with the homeless so now that they seem frustrated this is about seven dump truck loads of wood chips that they dumped here there's no good reason to dump these wood chips here you know this is just one example the other example would be towing our vehicles in the middle of the night coming in with tow trucks and just towing a couple of our vehicles out of tent city very insensitive to the needs of the poor and in the needy of our community [Music] [Applause] that's the most important aspect of it I just like to feel like you can plan a few months ahead it seems like every time I think we're secure here something comes up so I guess that's partly why I'm disorganized everything I had in the air you know in your winter clothes are very bulky and your winter blankets it's very hard to keep those things from season to season you know like this year I'm planning to plant a garden but you know in a way you think like why you know what if they come and you know make us all leave and the gardens left behind some will say it's hard it's hard you know in that in that respect you know I guess refugees all over the world kind of feel this way essentially that's what we are we're refugees all the people here for whatever reason [Music] Mahajan Briones Edmond and so what constantly mirror get to Manoa Ellis disease you do stay on [Music] dominant male con él está en me en la Virgen maría de cinéma machi Party particular choco I mean pull and Nikki are kneeling in Chania tyree mandersohn [Music] there's a strong feeling here isn't there that because we went through that kind of misery and that kind of exploitation and that kind of poverty that other countries have to go through the same thing and then they will emerge into the sunny uplands which the Western countries now in theory occupy so there's a kind of developmental model behind all this which is completely unsustainable because they took about the developing world but actually there is no country that is not developing we are a developing country Britain as developing country France as developing country Canada is a developing country the only question is what kind of country are they developing into we haven't stopped developing the word developed is tendentious is also a lie we're not developed it imply something static we go on developing so the idea that the poorer countries in the world are going to become like us we will be something else by that time which no doubt they are supposed to long to equal ah and and carry on striving to become like us but that model set in the world of limited resources where where does it lead I mean what kind of future is it does it you Tommy Oh yes and amezo [Music] command merci beaucoup could dispose president oh you are betraying pdhvt society Louis on the dollar recognizing that the world's squatter communities which are home now to perhaps a billion people somewhere between one and six and one in seven people on the planet and if current trends continue that will rise to two billion and three billion sometime during this century and will wind up being perhaps one in four or one in three people on the planet living as squatters I really think the message is that we have to look at squad communities as normal urban neighborhoods and work with them to provide services to encourage people to build to a higher standard to give them the tools and wherewithal and resources that they can build I our standards so that their communities can be just as safe and sound as what we consider legal urban neighborhoods if you give the squatters security they will start to build and then it's a partnership effort with the government to bring in the kind of infrastructure that people need in order to live you know what we would consider modern lives I here in the United States or in Canada we call them the homeless and and what does that do it makes them a mass it takes away their specificity it takes away who they are it makes them only their lack their lack of a home yeah here's a here's an example of somebody who just made a simple fence you know it's just a couple of stumps but it represents a fence to him you know that's his little piece of property and so it personalizes it and it gives him was a sense of a sense of ownership you know with that that little fence that he's made so a piece of creativity I think in this type of setting where you have your own individual space as opposed to a shelter where you're piled up in a room with people or and you know you have no space in this type of atmosphere it gives you a sense of you know a sense of you know trying to make yourself better it gives you gives you hope and gives you self esteem you know you you're building up to something it gives you a pride it gives you you know you're cleaning up your place you have something can call your own even though it's temporary and it gives you a sense of belonging it gives you self-esteem someone some of black cousin Charlie gave me the frame of this house had no roof on it like this dresser was in here it was in the snow and everything else so Minister Steve helped put the roof up a friend gave me plastic to put on the outside he gave me plastic for the roof she picked out the color for the wallpaper and I just ran from there he's got the female touch I like the other I guess it's his mother in him apparently she did something very good with him cuz close your eyes you feel like you're in a house it's amazing only thing I could take credit for is the wallpaper and the stuffed animals up there he's all of it we've been gathering over seven years he's the first man I've ever loved in my life and I'm 34 years old never fell in love before time met him he was my first love stallers never changed all Americans wanted you know our hold so it shows that even though you're homeless you can still make a whole matter nothing you know me cuz this is basically like an oversized garbage man you know because it's all plastic there's no wooden you know basically so but you know even if you got nothing is still nice to take care of whatever you have people have a basic human right everybody has a right to shelter everybody has a right to a place that they can call their own and when you try to suppress the people and you don't give everybody their basic human rights it's an oppression [Music] mr. wit my man's our papaya sit sit mr. step of Sibyl stopp'd repeat our one well copy this impingement provider virtually the bullion medicines person area call today paparella should shake a lot supper for romance of tanto sorry boo it's probable not a favor the family [ __ ] man [ __ ] [Music] you see subway car anymore don't do it you see my ass you know what's Parana via a paragraph at the new C so squatting I feel offers this potential for looking at land differently so that we can see that everyone has a right to the city and that the squatters have a right to their home that's the point of the city of the city is supposed to be this great melting pot where everyone can come and figure out how to be a member how the join had a make it their homeland and when we deny squatters that right we're denying everything that cities ought to be I think the privatization of Social Hope has been one of the very abstract thing to say but pride but but hope now lies in private escape and that is the model that we are teaching the world that the you have to better yourself as an individual whereas I think what many poor people do and realize is that there is only one way to improve your life and that is through some kind of collective activity and that individual individual escape from whatever it is you're escaping from is not an answer so perhaps what we could what we could rediscover because we've certainly been through it and we've discarded it is the beauty and the value and the liberation Airy the liberation the immense patriot capacity of collective activity and certain the restoration of social hope to a society that has abandoned social Hope in favor of individual um the fantasy or come and say a kind of renewal of our shared pooled resources not a rapacity to use up as much of the earth's resources we can in one brief human life and then to become famous to become a celebrity for how much of the world you've devoured or a sad epitaph for civilization and the culture la plana TV service also limited only the present pranaam world no cleavage will see a tighter ability to share the problem or care upon him and not confronting initial planet air horn territoire terrestre having they were so the prison pre-meeting so the squatter communities represent a return to what the word community really means which is a community of what we all get together and work with each other and if we looked at all of our communities where we all live more as a communal experience where the power is developed by sharing between the people we would make our community stronger and then make our cities better ôhe suck it up hello [Music] come on here thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music]
