welcome back in trey lowell here with lowell productions today's video we're going to be spending quite a bit time talking about the panasonic s5 now small disclaimer i used to own the panasonic gh4 currently shooting with the gh5 and about six months ago purchased the panasonic lumex s5 so let's have a long form discussion of the do's the don'ts what i like and uh why i think you might want to pick up this camera in 2022 coming up next [Music] all right so obviously after that intro you probably get the vibe that i'm a little bit of a panasonic fanboy well now that has some truth i want to do some explaining years ago i bought the panasonic gh4 completely happy bought the gh5 completely blew my mind away with the ibis the 10 bit 422 all the different resolutions and just the overall video quality that was compact in that little bitty panasonic gh5 now from time to time one thing i did find that i wanted i wanted some more depth of feel the ability to have a little bit more of a cinematic look so panasonic s5 came along roughly in 2021 and i waited a little while before i purchased it but about six months ago i ended up perching purchasing the s5 plus the sigma i guess adapter and their 20 to 60 kit lens all for roughly about twenty one hundred dollars and i have to be honest with you since then i have been absolutely thrilled now i do pair it up with my gh5 my gh4 and for the most part this has turned into my a cam now i do have the ability with my signo adapter to use all of my canon ef mount glass from the past so that was another reason why i kind of wanted to stick within the panasonic i guess camera bodies and things like that is that i knew that i was going to be able to take my past class and use it with my new camera now that being said i'm currently rocking the canon nifty 50 f 1.8 nothing special here other than i really like to use this from time to time to get extreme shallow depth of field now i really don't crank it down much below like an f 2.8 really just because i find that if i go any lower it's very hard to pull focus but at that f 2.8 you are going to get some beautiful backgrounds and that's really one reason why i went all in on this camera now with the gh5 if i wanted to achieve those blurry backgrounds i had to shoot basically like an f17 which i was able to do with a few pieces of glass but for the most part you weren't getting tubular backgrounds unless you were going an f2 or below now i'm currently shooting at an f 2.1 on a mikey 12 millimeter lens so you can kind of get an understanding of what the depth of field is going to be but if i were shooting with the s5 with the exact same setup definitely more blurry backgrounds now let's say you're somebody that has a gh4 or you own a gh5 maybe some of your concerns in regards to upgrading to the s5 would be how is it going to match could i actually use all those cameras together and absolutely you can as long as you get your color profiles together and you get your kelvin or your white balance all matched up for the most part any time i've had to edit between those three cameras that i've mentioned i haven't had much of an issue now of course if you were looking dead at the gh4 footage versus the gh5 or the s5 there is going to be a little bit of difference but for the most part most people are not going to be able to tell and i typically use my gh4 more for my c cam now let's talk about glass that i use the most on this particular camera and while i do have the kit lens which is the 20 to 60 f 3.5 i want to say 5.6 going to be dependent upon how much you're zooming in on that bad boy i find this piece of glass it was only 200 as a kit lens definitely pick it up if you're gonna be in the market for the s5 but more of a vlog camera more of my out and about super lightweight piece of glass this is going to be it this is going to be the one that comes with me that if i actually dropped it it falls it breaks i can beat it up it does not matter now the canon pieces of glass whether it be the 24 to 105 which is going to adapt just like the other to the sigma adapter or the nifty 50 these two and side note i also have the 70 to 200 f4 that i'll throw on here these two currently are my kind of go-to in regards to the s5 so i find myself using my 24 to 105 at that f4 probably the most really because of the zoom range the 24 is going to be super wide on the full frame the 105 is going to be able to give me a lot of versatility in regards to getting very tight shots from multiple different kind of i guess locations and yeah i've shot many recap videos weddings you name it with these pieces of glass plus i mentioned that 70-200 i have some footage actually running as we speak for somebody that came from the gh5 the s5 has just been a blast and like i said at roughly like 2100 for this this and the adapter i feel like that's a great bang for the buck now as far as resolutions go pretty much going to be about the same as the gh5 you're going to have a little bit more flexibility in regards to maybe some slow-mo photography on this camera is going to be significantly better autofocus i've talked about it in the past but just in a nutshell sure you can use it for photography i still find it's kind of slacking or lacking in some of the you know face tracking and then full auto focus where i just let the camera do its own thing and make its decisions that is something i really do not use with this particular camera and really i just haven't either or just in the past with any of my panasonic cameras like all of us know and drop a comment in the comment section below panasonic autofocus is just something that has not been on point at least up to this point really what i was looking for in this particular camera was more of a cinematic look more depth of field and uh yeah i'm able to get that and then low light now you have dual isos here or dual native isos iso 640 and then iso 4000 now what does that even mean basically it's just gonna mean the camera favors those in particular environments so if you can get it to 640 dual native iso you're gonna be great and if you can do 4000 that's going to be awesome as well now as someone that's out there shooting weddings going in different environments where i do need that low-light capabilities this definitely extremely extremely out forms performs the gh5 in regards to low light as far as functionality of this camera as someone that's been using the gh5 and gh4 for years i mean this is literally you turn this camera on and you pretty much know exactly where everything is lay it out on the menus you name it now one thing that i have to mention that i have not liked so far is going to be the mini hdmi while that's not a breaker for me it's just i don't know it seems like one of these days it might give out on me but so far it's been amazing and um you know as long as you're not completely yanking this thing out of there things of that nature i think you're going to be fine but i was a little spoiled with the gh5 and the full hdmi port i am going to be able to have the ability to charge this with usbc which i've had past videos where i've mentioned to you guys that being a nice feature also as far as battery life goes on this camera compared to my gh5 this thing rocks and rolls a little bit of a different battery i've got some wasabi's that i picked up they're a little bit cheaper and um yeah you know battery life has been great also as far as charging goes the nice charger that came with it usbc charging both for this and the actual lumex uh battery and charger that it comes with just uh you know updated features that the gh5 did not have i mean when i think about 2021 i think about purchasing this camera about five months ago um i never regret it and it also is a perfect complement to the gh5 and the gh4 i needed a scenario where i had three cameras that were all matchable but i also wanted to upgrade i had been sitting around thinking that i was going to get another gh5 but all in all i really wanted more cinematic look or elite depth of field and then i also wanted some more low-light capabilities and side note this thing can take some wicked good photos so that's like a huge bonus that i really didn't purchase it for that particular i guess spec but it's nice to know that if i want to pop off some photos with this it's a great photo camera now you guys have seen plenty of footage running throughout this video so that you could see every bit of footage that was actually shown was shot on the panasonic s5 whether it be the wedding whether it be some kind of like youtube video b-roll you name it outdoorsy stuff uh the s5 has really come in handy and uh the one thing i would say in regards to 2021 moving into 2022 have no no thoughts of upgrading if i were gonna upgrade though i recently got the shoot on a komodo uh the red komodo 6k awesome but we're talking about a six seven thousand dollar camera versus 2000 for a lens and a adapter so would i buy this camera would i recommend you buy this camera i would say absolutely now if you're familiar with panasonic systems and you are not going to be wanting to shoot autofocus all the time i think panasonic cameras are going to give you the best bang for the buck and to be honest with you as most people advance in their filmmaking photography careers autofocus tends to kind of get put on the back burner now i know it's one of those things that sony cameras have gotten wicked good and one one man band operations really prefer autofocus but i have always found that with my lumex the number one thing whether it was the gh4 the gh5 or the s5 and this might sound silly to some is that i'm always able to get a usable shot and what does that mean that means between the ibis and then just the functionality of the camera once you get used to pulling focus with these i just think it's a great camera for many people out there to not break the bank and be able to get beautiful high-res professional looking images and you'll find out there that there are so many people that are fans of panasonic i just honestly think that their marketing is garbage in that there's just not enough people talking about it and when there's so much focus on autofocus and panasonic is just never really been good at that i think a lot of people just erase this type of camera out of the equation where somebody like myself i'm over here advocating for it i'm buying into their systems more and like i mentioned the only way a place that i'm pretty much would be going would be up into a cinema level which honestly most of us that's just so significant unless you're running a business a komodo is not even going to be realistic now if you're looking at me and you're saying fanboy fanboy fanboy look the canon i'm sure r5 is going to be great the uh a7s3 i mean here's the truth i could buy two of these for the price of that but i know that camera is going to be great but if you're someone out there you're shooting interviews you need multiple cameras maybe you're even going to be live streaming things of that nature to me i'd rather get a fantastic camera at a great price that i could almost get two for the price of one rather than breaking the bank for one also i've had videos about this in the past if you really want to take advantage of your camera it's not going to be the body that's really going to be needed to get upgraded it's really going to be glass and uh i can foresee in the near future i have my eye on the meki 35 millimeter i think it's like 500 bucks i know i know i've loved mecci i had their 12 millimeter t 2.2 for the panasonic gh5 and um i've heard great comments and watched some views or some videos in regards to the meki 35 millimeter and it seems like everyone that's purchased it or at least used it loves it and it wouldn't really break the bank so conclusion of this video s5 2021 2022 totally a great camera i plan on doing tons more videos in regards to it showing you guys exactly what footage would look like whether it be the nifty 50 whether it be the 20 to 60 whether it be the 24 to 105 or maybe it's even a 7200 and then in the near future hopefully we get our hands on some more glass to show you guys how this badass full-frame camera and 2022 and even 2021 will not break the bank but get you everything that you need so hey guys it's trey lowe with lowell productions today's video more of a gossip session about why i'm still extremely satisfied with my purchase of the s5 and to be honest with you i want to hear what you guys think and not necessarily about particularly this video i want to know what have you guys heard about the s5 if you have any questions drop a comment in the comment section below i'd love to answer it and if i can't i'll go out try to figure out what your comments questions concerns are and i will hook it up so hey guys trey lowe see y'all in the next video [Music] you
