[Music] [Applause] [Music] after gwv that the Williamsburg that's the Brooklyn Bridge Tappan Zee yes gwt's yeah something like that going into Jersey our next guests are not only two very respected and popular film critics they're also everybody's favorite couple here they are ladies gentlemen Siskel and Ebert come on [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] what do you think that Richard Harrow I see something he is great funny he just told us he liked the picture backstage he told this film that wasn't nominated looking for Richard documentary by Al Pacino on Shakespeare I had made a my ten best list he thought it was fabulous when actors say it's great and Pacino is great in it that's a big recommendation that's an indirect way of saying the Academy Award screwed up the documentary category again this year scrum they don't know what they're talking about anyway he was he was in the in the the Clint Eastwood film the Unforgiven is yes he was he played the English Bob yeah that was a great for great films you guys like that film not as much as Roger I liked it oh I thought it was great I thought I thought like it was like reading a book like every scene was a new chat and think it was the anti violence statement that a lot of people thought I didn't go to CNN a violent State when I went to see a Western and I saw a good one yeah let's get right to the predictions first of all you guys satisfied with the nominations yesterday satisfied with the Grippit satisfied with a grip I don't rip that she would always say you butch satisfied with the gril sorry add a little pre-show that's hilarious right now seriously start with me you guys enjoy the nominations are all right I don't think it was a real snub as much for Madonna I don't think it was an act of conspiracy that everyone said well she predicted it so I'm not gonna vote her I think the quality that's not being talked about it wasn't enough surprise in the performance when you look at Fargo Frances McDorman is it weird so and you say wow she's great in there when you see Brooke Glenda Breathitt Linda Brenda Blethyn listen you know satisfied with Zippy's allies yeah I'll try saying that she then you say wow who is that with Madonna you're saying okay Donna you're saying it's an extent of music video Donna was really very good but if you look at the five nominees probably the one who edged her out was Emily watching and breaking the waves and if you go to see breaking the ways I'm sure a lot of people not will because it was nominated you're gonna see an amazing performance okay wouldn't have done without any of the other five if you're talking about rockers have got knocked out of the competition Courtney Love's work in People vs Larry Flynt is a tougher role the Madonna's rolling yeah but as somebody I think one of you guys pointed out she was just playing a drug addict no that was what we weren't that's what we didn't point out we pointed that was wrong the the English Patient that's that's somebody else pointed out that's Oscar bait that's got Oscar written all over at the English Patient Fargo that would be me I'd vote for that one it's a where the since I've seen patient Fargo was greater look right into the camera and let's tell them all we all agree a for Fargo yes for Fargo Jerry Maguire though people say is very very good sex and lives have not seen that shine I would love to secret this all sex and lies where the hell am I thinking about [Applause] all right Best Actor a pretty boy Tom Cruise well there you go no more calls I think it'll be no shine and the guy from surly surprise a Billy Bob Thornton pulls it out he was also here yeah that's a great part you guys see that yeah that's a good film yeah but I think it'll be pretty boy Tommy rush they go for anglers who conquered probably what the glamour then what the glamour they went pretty boy they're being a conquer than being a sports agent yeah exactly good point Roger thank you very much all right best best actress Brenda Blethyn yeah in secrets and lies you guys love that Oh Diane Keaton in Marvin's Room I hear she's great she's very good in and she finally dropped the Annie Hall characterization and I think that's why that performance stood out against Meryl Streep her co-star l'affaire Frances McDormand in know that would be great they're as good a filmmakers as we have right now that's rookie unusual films Academy either they'll go and that hole down where are you hospital Gordon Academy why don't what in your lives you belong what in your life would make you hostile to the Motion Picture Academy right back with the boys [Applause] [Music] [Applause] okay so we've covered pretty much everything no matter is regarding the Academy Awards right we think it's gonna be we're gonna go there were gonna be so many new faces this year those billion people around the world Gooding jr. Cuba Gooding it's pretty good he was here as well I like to have it over here but William a Treme see you get in Fargo yeah it's not a likeable role to play that later but it's a great at imploding doofus this harebrained that's hardly one not even smart enough to make up even a half-baked lie you can't even explain how he knows that he does mr. Sedler and the resentment toward his rich father law you know that's really a dead on I got that too love the characters great and also amazing the doorman and Fargo really give you the sense that this is the Northern Plains before now a whole new generation can see it on this big twister except with volcanoes right very good volcanoes you put on a little weight I will do with the show with you huh what's he talking about the beautician and the Beast that's a friend of the nanny and auntie Fran just redid the TV show how about pitching a question to me all the way here you're not right here thanks a lot a night all the reasons I didn't even know you were here Roger I'm sorry okay we got the Chinese acrobats coming up because it's today yeah all right back with the Chinese [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Roger Roger why don't you go since you're feeling left out why don't you introduce the circus thanks our next guests perform an amazing sensory old acrobatic act that appear regularly in Las Vegas at the Holiday and casino boardwalk please give a nice warm welcome how am i doing day my bad the fiery circus [Applause] [Music] [Music] nice cowboy excellent job david sanborn paul fear for the kids thank you very much Roger Thank You Jean closure and well good luck though or whatever you say my thanks to the Far East circus Richard Harrison David Sanborn Peter O'Toole tomorrow night Tom Schneider is next thanks for watching good night everybody [Music] you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] for more than 20 years our first guests have confused moviegoers with their cryptic thumbs-up thumbs-down what the hell does that mean here now to usher in the summer blockbuster film season please welcome the lovely the talented Siskel and Ebert [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I said beer you know 39 you guys had a little party in a soirée little celebration I had no party for Roger oh there was nobody no I gave him a piece of my cake that's nice did you give him anything is it good I gave him absolutely nothing now why you should you should do I give him something every Wednesday my presence his paycheck isn't that sweet I was waiting for him to take me to a Bulls game but no luck I saw Biff there he was quiet we saw you as a matter of fact err yes Chicago yeah it was thrilling Davina's the Jack Nicholson of Chicago you know I'm not that good an actor it just occurred to me somebody call this to my attention that your show the show that you guys own and operate or run or whatever your movie review show is in fact produced by Disney produced by Disney sleepy and we were certainly hoping you would bring that up tonight all right they're everywhere there we haven't it but so now do you have any sort of creative editorial autonomy or are you under the thumb of the mouse well I just dumped all over Hercules yeah Hercules is out and I knocked it so I would think that would mean was incorrect and doing that I think it's a one cutter we use michael eisner favorite dwarf now you see a little kissy to me at least give or thumbs down the thumbs up to disney pictures over there now seriously this raises an interesting question is there some sort of policy have you had a meeting was there a memo whose length arms length they say we don't talk to them our whole show is based on our credibility that was scored well that's right but that makes me wonder now you have to work extra hard to promote to know to protect that to protect them not to prove it we just tell the truth we've been doing it for a long time that's what we do gene didn't like Hercules he said so yeah but but it must it rankles you doesn't rankle you doesn't it you're a trifle yes rankle and irritate people that Disney is co-opting and usurping American culture doesn't he just drive you nuts that everything's got to be Disney I like the parks I do like the park everybody action Park in New Jersey no I that's damn good [Applause] a good American entertainment they don't have kids and costumes hey I like the you know some of the vijnana State Fair I mean you know Abe again the Indiana it disturbs me a little bit disturbs me a little bit that now Times Square which used to be sort of indigenous to this city you know I'm not saying it was good it was probably not good but at least it was indigenous to this city it was of this city and now you know all of a sudden it's like an e in some place out you can go and finally we're hoping the sleeves will move into the theater here but you don't know what I'm talking about everything's now synthetic everything's plastic everything's you know we have nothing real our show is still real and it's very sleazy hey let's talk about the big blockbuster that we've already taken care of Hercules yeah I thought the animation was weak I thought that of the whole character of Zeus was boring compared to King Triton and the Little Mermaid how about the captive Hermes though wasn't he see if you like balls efforts I thought it was like Paul in person much better than pollicis and I thought it was a terrific ly entertaining movie and had a good look I enjoyed it I mean when he's comparing Triton to Zeus they don't perform the same functions in just a cartoon that's all it is it's just a cartoon I'm not go on fifty I'm gonna spend two hours watching the cartoons well they made some good ones this is hey hey I want to tell you something get ready this is the one get ready hang on to your wigs and keys this is going to be the one Copland haven't seen it all and I saw the previews of it I saw that but you saw the a half-hour thing did you hear that is it true that they had to reshoot some of it and Stallone wouldn't put the weight back on I heard that anyway I don't know that you're asking me oh man didn't you like what you saw I couldn't judge without having seen the whole film I'm a professional let's get a solo is that people can see Batman no wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute but it'll be out but the thing that I like to butter you got Harvey Keitel plant plan so you know we know we've seen this before we know what you have what's Adam De Niro a guy with a toupee we've seen them seen that character before we have Ray Liotta ya hothead yeah we've seen that before so it's like all our old friends are making another movie what's the long plays a different character he plays a fat sheriff that's kind of a great crew and I think this is going to be the movie of the summer you think it's got to be better than Batman maybe the movie it'll be the movie in the summer in Australia yeah but also not good day Batman and Robin are you trying to get the subject around a Batman or Robin somehow back to the movies that people can not see the I could go on to see the Batman movies when Michael Keaton a step down as Batman you didn't like Val Kilmer I said what did I say I said he quit going to see did you have a bad experience with Val Kilmer I just thought okay I went to see the movie and I paid my my name said yeah great Michael Keaton I know Michael Keaton he's Batman did you see both of the Michael Keaton pictures yeah yeah when did you like I think I like the first one a little bit a little bit better yeah but I liked it I thought Michael Keaton was your best Batman and I said okay difference who plays Batman they just cast for the chip Batman is not interesting in any of the movies compared to the villain it's gotten too big and the phrase exactly that's the problem with American movies in a nutshell which is that everything is too much action they're much more comfortable making special effects than they are dialogue they don't have to write anymore let's go through a couple of these Roberts picture wedding is a well-written script by Ronald bands who won an Oscar for Rain Man he's a fine writer he writes smart characters so the good characters are dumbed down in American movies now he was on the show last night and I wanted to do well because I'm hoping she'll think I had something to do with it oh you probably were instrumental bass the nice thing about the movies it doesn't end any weight all the way you think it will right everybody get so many comedies you think you don't the first well if it stars Julia Roberts you figure she's going to end up happily married leave her to me and I won't give away the ending they kill the shark exactly when she dives into that tank get down there the big blockbuster of the summer all about a hairdryer [Laughter] I've been saving that for you that was a good picture yeah Nicolas Cage and John Oh John Malkovich John Malkovich with AB Dada is the best psycho creep working today so you think lays it he plays it seriously and he plays it low-key and he has that literate dialogue I wonder if he writes some of his own dialogue maybe does probably Steve Buscemi has kind of the worst killer in history he's good to just love your work hey did you did you like him in in the in the Clint Eastwood movie in the line of fire he was good in that was like the best psycho creepy psycho were working at a speed to cruise control as much it was fun to the cruise ship out of control of what eight eight knots but the sailors don't see a giant ocean liner until it's three feet look up it's as close as that camera but what happened I got it's an ocean liner they didn't see it coming why can't they jump all they do jump off well they finally do jump off because that breakneck speed you know I don't bring it all about computers David no nothing at all I don't know anything this one has a villain in it Willem Dafoe as a computer and at one point the computer on the screen it says when to detonate crush him right bro he types in now yeah you don't know anything about computers computer do we don't knows it now now or now or is it now or when is now Oh a computer wouldn't know what now man all I know is I I laughed and laughed when I saw that in nobody else in the theater laughs nobody here to laugh you don't get it it's not a hidden camera you're on national television that story about computers that's very funny we're really lacing really look for Mike Douglas back like a long time what Mike Douglas he come he's coming back he's dead Mike Douglas no he's not that Merv Griffin you're dead right you wouldn't be okay I can see they wouldn't be understood either hey you know what I like I like that fifth element with peculiar yeah wasn't she excited I don't remember what she was wearing the kind of bandage oh oh oh contact with Jodie Foster yeah she builds a spaceship she doesn't build us if she does radio telescopes are the plans for a spaceship and she builds it where did you get this information we saw the movie she was now Jodie Foster was Nellie happy birthday all of you play there Jean happy birthday congratulations to you and the Bulls we'll be right back [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I should be back nice to be here the thing I like about having a Siskel and Ebert on this show at some point during the evening while they're on the program all three of us will be talking simultaneously okay well look father but it always happens now that the Pamela Lee is divorcing Tommy Lee our next guests are America's favorite couple please welcome Siskel and Ebert [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I was a flight from Chicago almost terrific I really enjoyed it yeah one hour and 31 minutes too good for you of pure entertainment nice to see you guys huge is tingling now you're bursting with excitement because this is this Israel get on an airplane yeah this is it this is the Academy Awards this is the World Series this is a Super Bowl for you guys that's right that's right and we're we know all we know what's gonna happen Oh what about this type I don't know what's gonna happen huh what do you mean you don't think Titanic is gonna win Best Picture it probably will win Best Picture do you know who are gonna win every other category yeah pretty much really yeah hopefully they're fixed right the things are real absolutely Dave you above all should know you hosted one year didn't you yes I did I nearly I nearly put him out of business [Applause] [Music] today this I've been talking about this and it's kind of a delicate area but I believe in the category Best Supporting Actress sure I believe we know that Gloria Stewart I'll tell you what they do when they mark their ballots they are all frustrated show producers yeah and they're all thinking wouldn't it be great if she won because it would be good television exactly for the 87 year old woman to get up there in X and because of that they're going to vote for without looking at the five nominees and it's talking to Joan Cusack the other night and I I didn't mean to break her heart but I said I I think she's likely to be the upset winner and I'll tell you why because in that category Best Supporting Actress frequently they pick a Saini unexpected choice like Marisa Tomei right or Mercedes Ruehl and this could be the Joan Cusack John Cusack is very very comedy does not win awards and that's why we're gonna think about it Dave she played someone what a stretch 14 years older than she is I know we don't need to get catty but here's here's that here's the the thrust of it the crux of it and I'm surprised that you guys YouTube geniuses have overlooked this when they have the shot of the woman sitting there nobody wants their living room their television screen to be full of an 87 year old woman who is lost right they don't want that shot they don't want to look at oh my god that was a hell of 90 she's lost so I don't know I think she should have given the diamond to charity instead of just throwing it in last year they get last year they had [Laughter] what happens don't tell them about what happens to the boat Oh leaving with a few surprises did you guys have last year they don't learn because last year they let Lauren Bacall look lost after she lost but learned to call is is half this woman's age this is an ad Lauren Bacall is forty three and a half this but this woman is not it's not like people are sliding scripture you know if we're running up this aisle to here how about this when you want to make another one they have to give it to her they won't give it to her which is by the way I'm not saying she didn't do a great job in the film although you know have you guys seen a night to remember sure that wasn't that it wasn't that fresh Titanic movies go wasn't it didn't have Leonardo DiCaprio in it well I got to play up for the audio the real debate he wasn't even born then the real debate going on now is Leo Leonardo the Leo DiCaprio is he is he a hunk or is he a heartthrob I think that Matt Damon is the hunk you're not o DiCaprio is a heartthrob I think that's the official word and how old is Leonardo 43 23 years old easy actually too young really to be in movies don't you think you know was Rin Tin Tin well now yeah now I know you've been drinking and by the way what does this do to Steven Spielberg all of a sudden mister mister mechanical lizard mr. theme park yeah but you know direct if they correct for inflation it turns out the Titanic is only 20 Thoreau yeah no that a comma the wind is still number one I think mr. Spielberg relieved right now you know they just could put away a guy was stalking him I don't cares about the Oscars yeah taking the fun out of the party but alright let's talk let's talk about some of the other films that were nominate I got a list right here okay I've seen a lot of these films by the way as good as it gets I enjoyed the offering what did you come on now it was one of my 10 what I do believe that that guy is gonna live happily ever after with anybody no I tell you what ten seconds after that movie is over the Nicholson character is going to be nuts again right well first of all he's not nuts he has the OCD but it's a different deal the obsessive compulsive disorder he's not well know they know he's not nuts he can be treated Kimmy buddy but you're done gene would you would you would you want to be married to Jenna no I thought a lot of stop it I found I found a lot of it difficult to believe on the other hand didn't you think watching Jack Nicholson was well worth the price blue blood and wine which came out in March of last year was at times when he was on the screen which is all great it's Jack again didn't Jack make up for all manner of unbelievab ility in the film yes yeah okay The Full Monty I'm telling you I raced to the full monty I couldn't I couldn't give him my money fast enough and came away it was a nice picture left I thought it was cute well as good as it gets I thought was funnier I thought it had funnier moments than the full monty and besides at the end you get guys you know with their things why you would make a wonderful critter like would be nice in that case well I thought it was the edgy it was edgy and kind of made me uncomfortable didn't that feel much better picture a better picture than foam ah yeah I think so yes okay oh yes Jane here's a guy for my money is is the the best living American actor he is fabulous in the epochal hero directed and produced this picture yeah the Apostle yeah yeah I don't think he has a chance so do you think yes I think he has an excellent chance of winning yes I think Nicholson will win and a runner on it will be Peter 5 Peter Fonda now you know I'm thinking maybe the way things work they might want to give it to Peter Fonda because of Henry and James that's that'd be the first father son and daughter to win Oscars and again this is a whole the list of you're going through they're all comeback stories here that we talk about Gloria Stewart comeback story Peter Fonda is a comeback story Burt Reynolds in the supporting cat category do tonight Achilles gold very very much film was quiet performance right flashy stuff that no that's exactly he was here last night Peter Fonda and I said that's the same thing to him I said you did a nice job on that okay Helena Bonham Carter boy give her all the awards I like that Helena Bonham Carter do you like her yeah what did you think of that I thought she was pretty good he did a very good job when Nicholson lays her out in the easy easy yeah with a line about her son insults her right her reaction shot is magnificent Judi Dench is going to win in that category playing Queen Victoria browner said Billy Connolly and he's been on the show a lot of times and he's like a comedian he's a Scottish comedian I'd even nominate and then you turn around and you there's a very very good very impressive that's a terrific picture that people should see mrs. Brown really superb yeah what else anything else any supporters I think it's gonna win I mean Reynolds you do with Burt Reynolds Helen Hunt will win because she's won in American against the four Brits no I don't think so for running the Academy loves to vote for British winners but wouldn't they like to see Burt come back I mean Burt's been sort of I don't know that they really want to see Burt come back they don't wanna see Cannonball Run 3 [Applause] come back Bert please come back stroker ace turret is very very very good in that movie but you know he's had such bad taste come back he put himself away yeah I mean that's his own fault because he made stroker race and Smokey and the Bandit and number two and number three and OH before you know you read it was his own fault that he trashed his own career right now after he makes Boogie Nights what does he do he signs a three-picture deal to make action movies for cable oh really that's his next you know but you bring up a good point in my job and of course in your job you watch the movies all the time and movies come big big stars and so you watch them for like two hours and then that's it they come they're out for a week and then they go away and I just think are we making too many movies yes that's a problem we are making twice as many movies in general national release now than we were ten years ago yeah well it's certainly keep up but no movie loses money do they they all in foreign sales and video losses money and no movie makes money it's very strange bookkeeping the question is what caliber of movies are being made in the writing is worse than ever and the special effects are better than a and it's for that reason that this show we only do five nights a week yeah but some of the books some of the writing is better than ever Jean in movies like Boogie Nights for example that's a wonderfully well originated alright boys we gotta go house over by the way thank God Oprah is well she defended our right to have opinions too and just think if she had gone to jail Roger and I could have gone to jail and me being the same song with Roger yeah but they differ get really new I get fed get ready [Applause] don't pass the soap good to see again a pleasure Roger Roger Ebert gene Cisco [Applause] you every Friday night ladies gentlemen we answer our viewer mail you folks write in to us and and then we answer it Paul here we go let's open up the old CBS mailbag we by the way if you want to contact us in the mailbag send us actual letters we don't want that email crap we just don't want the email we prefer getting stuff in the mail that has been licked by you the home viewer so forget the email thing here we go letter number 1 dear Dave do you ever watch a Siskel & Ebert - Lisa woods Norman Oklahoma oh sure Siskel and Ebert I'm telling it when they come on the show they're great and I love watching in fact I was watching the other day and I noticed do you see it Paul Siskel and Ebert well something has happened they got into kind of something very strange I taped it and brought it in here take a look Siskel and Ebert our next film is lost in space this big-budget version of the 1960s camp classic Leonardo Leonardo DiCaprio is hunky Leonardo DiCaprio you're talking about right now we're talking about lost what I'm talking about big boy he's hunky Jean [Applause] ladies gentlemen our next guests have the two most powerful thumbs in show business please welcome Siskel and Ebert Roger hey and a special welcome back to the show - gene where I don't I don't think we have not seen you since you had your medical operation a few months back yeah well I thought I would not cooperate here on the set yes well thank you very much Dave you did a real nice thing you called me at home for about a half an hour we talked about a mutual love of baseball you sent me a book which you didn't and thomas Boswell's how life it takes the world series the collection of wonderful essays by The Washington Post I only wish I could turn into a nurse drew Barrymore right now you in a white uniform scare me anyway she was looking at you and you could see John Barrymore do you know the film that I was talking about maybe to see what was it red dust I don't know no it wasn't with Ethel Barrymore and then of course lionel Barrymore I think it's called yet and Ethel Barrymore I think it's called a free soul from 1931 I think I think you're right with Clark Gable and Leslie Howard I think that's yeah by the way Dave but when you called me and at home and talked to me for half an hour right was that during a show yeah oh yes he was all aboard did I get my ass chewed for that too bad governor I got a hug I got a lot to talk to you guys about let's go let's go to the list of films and just get right to work you know I owe you guys an apology because I'm thinking yesterday I bet Siskel and Ebert never work anybody over anymore I mean you're you're wealthy you don't want to piss off Disney they own your show so you can't really really say anything bad about anybody now I'm thinking oh there's always Adam Sandler yeah now wait a minute and then I watch I watched your show yeah and you liked one movie and you just murdered four films I'm sorry oh and so my hats off to you guys we thought you had rolled over and gotten soft in your old age no out there killing them I appreciate oh yeah I'm still I'm still using this is the actual Sun I use on the show and of course this is the stunt double all right let's start the way have a great idea Barrymore she should star in the Monica Lewinsky story that's with the straps and everything did you know that it's been a what they could call it they're in a solid sessional year and drew Barrymore is an example to films this year she did ever after playing royalty Cinderella oh that's and also of home fries bottoms and I mean that's a great range by Drew Barrymore and again two good pictures in our terrific year what about you get the sense earlier that I was building up to some sort of a punch line okay when I said I knew what they could call the Monica Lewinsky story did you feel that I was gonna say anything else the only thing I have a great time I think it's time for a nurse uber to deliver a I have a great title I wore what you did last summer oh there you go maybe we're gonna move on now the waterboy you got your Adam Sandler here the waterboy it opens up 39 and a half yeah and the next weekend it is 2500 thanks to our influence it would've done 40 million it hadn't meant for us is that right yeah we kept it down $5,000 now are you are you surprised as its Amy I was surprised but a picture can have a unique quality to appeal to the teenage audience yeah and if it has that line if it's the only one opening that weekend it can do really big business you know it's my advice to anyone who like the movie is you know there is hope for you just hang on and get to be older and smarter but but this this this and the last one he did the there you go the wedding singer so this makes him a huge star I just let's do some criticism I just find his apparent use of a speech impediment I don't think that's his natural speaking voice annoying and then oh good we got some adults here Dave you'd run an adult crowd was it a Pleasantville now here's Pleasantville I watched this movie this is like a two-hour film I I'm sorry I didn't I didn't I just didn't get this movie Oh fabulous film what it is is it's saying that things haven't gotten worse in the last 40 years they've gotten better because there's this cliche that things are so wonderful in the bucolic 50s and now in the 90s everything's going to hell and it isn't that way because change and innovation and daring social choices well I'm in there LF that's saying you couldn't be on television well they want them then it's a complete fantasy because that of course is not true you believe the 50s were better well in many ways yeah perhaps they were well they weren't bad I think also the film are for what's important in life for example the characters turned colored you know bow have sex they turn change no find out a change come back to second importance and books and art those are the big three I thought that was a little far-fetched and perhaps heavy-handed but at the alien other words for birdie Adams please please Dave David couldn't have been think about it for a second governor it couldn't have been it couldn't have been heavy-handed if you didn't understand it now listen listen at the end at the end at the end they have the principles all sitting on a park bench all a Gump it's a Gump Ian moment yes it is they're all sitting there on the park bench and and and I'm as bewildered I'm feeling like well I couldn't be a bigger so we had a great field let me make the point yeah Raj sorry I'm sorry we come here to learn was leading up to something Roger so the principles in the film they all say and this is like after two hours and I I think it's a well-made film that's nice the performances are good who's good to see Don Knotts and and I like I like I can't the kids named Jeff Daniels I like you yes at the at the end of it after two hours of all of this the principals all say kind of simultaneously well what do we do now and then they answer their own question by saying I don't know I don't know it's right at a great last time I just thought well hell I feel I feel better if they don't know and they've been working on the damn movie for a movie they went into a world where everybody knew what they were going to do next and they changed it so you didn't know anymore really and when you as opposed to the wonderfully enigmatic ending of the waterboy when you say louder boy I'm sure it's a lovely film when you say well-made that's quite an understatement Pleasantville is an example of extraordinary computer graphics and we've had many that and we've had many this year to making it a remarkable year I've had it with what dreams may come combat or watch a movie with 1931 now got ants ants and then the bugs movie right or to give him lionel Barrymore exactly but it was just like it was full of free-floating symbolism that I had wasn't breathing loading it was all anchored anchored symbolism one thing at the Filipinos where he speaks when a good filmmaker doesn't came down [Applause] that's okay the film came down quite clearly against book-burning you got that part of the fish on the fire did they do a lot of that in the 50s were we actively breasts were innocent morganatic books this book that came out about comic books they banned comic books well in the 50s now all kinds of books you couldn't read most of the books in your library it was a crime to own in the 50s are you sure I'm sure of it I had a library also did you notice in the library everyday in your home library you know the one about the selection of books that were endorsed in the film exactly I think with huckleberry yeah what are you pink oh you know these give me a time salt when your movie career is finished a lot is very good have you had her on your show yeah she was good I like Queen Latifah you know I don't think she could play against a man in a movie I don't think there's a single star and how are you gonna deal with her great there's no man out there up to her she is wonderful now what about I love the dresses that she wore in that movie to the oppa the Oprah movie your pal from Chicago Oprah beloved he loved it a good film it size like the work of her it was really unfortunately many audiences found it depressing and confusing in the word of mouth worked against it right of course also when you say it's a slavery film we know that's not going to again open with we have this there's Adam Sandler's probably in that movie no it would have it would have helped if sefa her character had been you know a vampire you know that would have I mean then you'd have a box office I mean this is not a mystery I mean and she shouldn't be a court in the field still a beautiful piece of work it's a real good piece of work which once you understand it and it's complex it's a real tribute to at least two generations of african-american women who have held our family together under great film adversity and as more than you can say for the waterboy exactly all right well I hope we've all learned a little something here tonight we'll be right back [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hey doing pod you have a good weekend I had a fantastic time good for you everything all right with the family everyone's well and healthy thank you for how old is your baby boy now two weeks three will about a month old yeah month old yeah my god William Adam had him down in the basement cleaning out the furnace I'm sorry you had it you had a gal in the basement now William was down there month old yeah was cleaning out the yeah I put him to work right away that's very bad yeah very bad yeah no yeah why not how was your weekend well I had a pretty good weekend until I found out the gene siskel died and boy what what sad unpleasant news uh it wasn't that terrible Siskel and Ebert we're on the show I don't know dozens of times sure a hundred times and and going way way back to the beginning of the old show and a lot of people that you know on the show are just you know people that you know showbiz celebrities you don't really know much about him but Siskel and Ebert we kind of became friendly with absolutely and so to hear about gene who was you know and my gosh we're all thinking about his family and his friends in Chicago but just a nice decent guy sure well and that was great and it was very very troubling and very sad to hear that so as I said all of our best to those folks in Chicago so that was unpleasant right there [Music] I want to just say take a minute here to say something to our regular viewers if the Late Show to you tonight looks a little more futuristic it's because it's not just the Late Show its Late Show mm yes it's our goal to love the screen up with so much crap you won't be able to see my we're approaching that looks like people on vacation plaster stuff all over their cars states up in that other car a rock city for 25 years our next guest was one half of America's favorite couple ladies and gentleman here's Roger Ebert Roger [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome to the show thank you how you doing okay good it's very strange it's very peculiar because for as long as I've known you I've known gene and gene was always there or always there and you would be there and now here you are obviously by yourself and it's just it's very darn strange I miss him I miss his humor I miss his intelligence I miss fighting with him I mean we used to be backstage before we would come on you know jostling to see who would come out first well I loved it I don't really do a lot of jostling do you not really you know when we fought it was funny because we never fought in personal terms we never insulted each other was always kind of on an intellectual level who was right who had the higher moral ground it was kind of like a theological discussion which the other person was evil and they were good and we had the abstract it had nothing to do with movies personalities but I loved it because when you guys came out here there was always great energy and I think it was because the energy of the two of you carried out here and I like to think that I was the third Siskel and Ebert you know I like the fifth Beatle I was the third or Roger and gee it was always fun to be on with Gene because you tried to talk over both of us and you couldn't do it and and and I'll just tell you you know I was sorry and and don't take this the wrong way because had you died I'd feel the same way I was all right right you feeling all right I was sorry that the show continued I mean I know you want to still have a show you should still have a show but I just I look at that and I think well now where's gene where's my buddy where's my friend gene he ought to be there with his buddy Roger and now you're running these ringers through there and I I don't know he ought to be he ought to be you know and I don't know what to tell you except the show is worth doing that is the only show do your own eo0 so you have to have somebody else gene and I made a format I think that is important and it's the only show on national television that really seriously considers movies tells you have a stinker or not and talks about little movie let's roll as big Lynette that's right and you got to be [Applause] it's a it's a tribute to gene that we're carrying I know I know but doesn't it break your heart when you watch the show and gene ain't there doesn't it just kill you to see that Oh at me and Ando you run through there now well this coming week we have Jeff Greenfield who is this oh now he's okay senior analyst yeah he's got some brain and we're going to review three kings yeah oh three kings were the the Mart have you seen the movie yeah what do you think of the film I you know usually I would say well tune in next week and I'll tell you I'm going to tell you you should see this film this is some kind of a masterpiece it's good yeah the dumb clip that you showed I mean what if it took hey wait nobody is ever seeing the clip so Mark Wahlberg Mark Mark Wahlberg is here instead of letting him say anything we get to see a truck blow up we've never seen that before who picked the damn plan who picked the damn clip and then they don't work picked at him and they don't stop there then another truck tilts over and it's a widescreen movie and most of his scenes in that sequence we're off at the edge of the screen you couldn't see him I mean it just saw the truck you know so it is really a good move these are not my problems but I'm just here how is it trying to help stars so you know it's the studio they think the people at home want to say stop blowing up well that's why and that's my complaint with most movies it's pretty much the same it's the same format it's the same plot it's the same there's and this igloo geyser nothing that this movie is not pretty much the same it has great dialogue he's right that it's got humor along with politics a lot of action is kind of Indiana Jones meat salad what about that George Clooney what do you think of him he's good yeah and Ice Cube they're good ice cube now how does ice cube get to be in a major motion picture by being good enough to be in it yeah I mean you wait until you see this movie because I know you really like movies yeah I do but I don't go out that all I don't go out that come to you they'll come over with a projector and put it up in a fireproof booth let's say living your honor let's about some of the big films of the of the who who else is gonna come in besides jeff greenfield joyce Kohei week from Boston and Joel Siegel from ABS oh that guy and we have Harry Knowles is that Joel Siegel I mean he just he's he's in the pocket of Disney no he's not yes he is oh I'm in the pocket of this well you're in the everybody everybody is owned by somebody else you're just saying that because you're in Paramount spot no no not me not me sir I bought CBS I don't care I'm a free agent well me too the sixth sense for this thing this turned out to be a huge killer it's a virus Willis and the kid in that movie is like 200 million dollars he's gonna be second only to Phantom Menace yeah did you like the movie I liked it and I liked the kid I mean it's not just some cute little kid who kind of smiles because he's home alone or something he has real long oh yes he has real and then he put the paint on the burglars you know he's got real long complicated dramatic scenes and I think I'm sure there's a lot of talk now that this kid Joel Haley Ozma will get an Oscar nomination don't overlook Bruce Willis's performance but also his contribution to the kids perform absolutely because in a movie like that the adult actor in a scene with a kid is kind of like the co-director exactly surrogate director because they get along sure and they have a great relationship that movie the Blair Witch Project I love that movie and you know a lot of people I got all these messages it made a lot of people throw up really because of the hand-held camera and notan literally they would be racing out into the lobby and looking you know they were throwing up because it made them sick there's telling people are sissies and now here's the movie that know that I like the muse Albert Brooks I thought that was a nice movie I thought it was a nice piece of work it was it was there's something very pleasing about just watching that unfold and I like he's smart he's a very smart maker and one of the sad that didn't do that well at the box office which I don't think is a criterion for anything maybe wasn't in that movie so today oh yeah no the - - man yeah boy this thing's really Owen Wilson is a real serial killer yeah that guy he's strange did you did you like a bottle rocket not so much as I like - man I kind of like it's just interesting isn't it I yet kind of yeah mama has certainly the guy's nuts you can tell he's not as an individual you mean I think as a human even the actor himself yes yeah have him on the show I would like yeah because I find him fascinating he's got a he's got a character to him he's got a kind of presence how do you think it's linear about gene tonight nobody interrupted me except for you yeah but gene not less I missed you gene looking down on himself ha ha you see you need me down there your lousy best I do I do but I hope listen I want you to keep the chair and keep the chair okay what are we doing here we got to we'll be right back that's what we're doing [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] our first guest host is very owned a very popular show called Roger Ebert and the movies and is the author of this new book right here it's called I hated hated hated this movie here's Roger Ebert ladies enema [Applause] [Music] [Applause] welcome back ain't do it I'm doing fine how are things no they're fine - yeah yeah you have this show this is the show that you and gene used to host or this is a completely different show well it's the same show but we're using revolving critics don't literally revolve on each show but they revolve between the show's boy boy don't kid yourself you've got something there people spin it around till they you know herb then yeah yeah I'm miss gene you must miss me I miss every year every day yes he was a good friend he was a sparring partner there was one of the great combinations in all of show business regardless of whether it's television or movies or you know how I just say this is G's chair right here sheriff you got to put a little plaque on that and gene was always very nice to me as were you and so but now you're doing the show on your own and like who are these hosts that come in and revolve well we have at the present moment have Richard Rover from the sun-times in Chicago I don't know it was any good so the lightweight very good very good what's his name Richard rope Roper yeah Michaela Pereira from a host of internet tonight on CD TV what the hell is the Joey Boston what the hell is EDTV I guess it's Davis television but it's like it's from Neptune or something these people these people are speaking a language I've never in my life heard I don't know who the hell they are I have no idea well that's all you have to watch it so you can learn something and you say it's it's as if who Ziff Davis Ziff Davis that's a guy's name that's two guys names Ziff and David yes and then they got their own they have their own TV I'll be damned yeah and then they have it's a but it's all about computers yes it is yes Dave it's about computer it seems to me to be operating system seems to be a little too advanced for the casual viewer to like I have no idea what there's obviously true in your case so how's that working out with various folks coming in they're very had one guy that was no good one guy came in and was no glow well I wasn't gonna talk about that who was it well no I won't mention his name was he nationally prominent was not now he isn't yeah this guy this guy came in to do our show was the only show that we couldn't use and we had to call in David Poland the next night to do flew in on the winner redo it came in on the red-eye do the show the next day this guy though we figured he had to be good because he'd been on the Letterman Show that's what he said that's what he said and later in doing some investigation that probably should have preceded his appearance we discovered that a fact his role on the show was to appear on stupid pet tricks with his parrot ah and we also found out that you cut him out of that segment because he didn't work for you maybe you wanted the parrot maybe we wanted the parrot but is this a guy who like is he working at a newspaper column is he's a writer I don't want a writer his name no used to embarrass in him even though he wrote an article in New York time about the experience of being on our show hate that I hate he said they kept asking him to do things again and that's true because he never so bad yes I wish these I wish these reporters would mind their own business I think so too there's too much gossip going and we're not adding to it yeah President Clinton was on the show he was well is that a good thing for the sitting president to have time to come and talk about films I mean isn't he busy I mean pasok didn't he sit in this chair once yeah I don't think I was here I think it was what I came in on the weekend no his was there yeah listen he is a movie fan he sees all the movies but I went into him do you see all the movies yes see I don't see how you don't know all the movies you don't watch television you don't know what computers are BK there was no White House saying these are the movies you can mention these are the movies you can't mention these are the ones he's seen the White House just said talk to him about any movie you want and he was ready it was incredibly well first look at the movies does this guy lie his favorite movie last year was three kings three kings so the big thing with the gold bar which I tipped the last time I was on this show I said it was a good movie and wait was i right even he liked there's a George Clooney in the thing yes yeah and and and Oh who's named Joaquin Oh Marky Mark Wahlberg yeah that's right the president is watching movies he loved that movie he went through he mentioned a whole lot of movies that he'd seen I couldn't mention a movie he hadn't seen he's seen movies from the past he says that the White House screening room is the biggest perk in the job [Applause] [Music] the biggest perk of the job is the intern program how did you find the guy did you think he was what you think of the guy everybody says he's charming and honorable smart yeah I don't have any smart yeah I mean you know you sit down I'm a movie critic it's my job to talk about the movies when I talk to somebody who isn't generally you have to be a little easy on them right he was ready to play he could be a guest host on our show I mean that he could also be present in the United States which is probably even a greater honor but now let's do we have time here to talk about to some of these summer films anything you say okay because I want to get to like Battlefield Earth John Travolta was here that's like the these people in fiction they have the science to use Hyper warp drive to get across the galaxy right and they have an invented fingernail clippers did you see the picture no I mean John Travolta a twenty million dollar super star everybody loves him he's charming he's handsome here he is with ropes of snot coming out of his mouth when I wasn't home this hair since he was born right it was later I was disappointed in the special affair are these blockbusters are these assimilators very big Battlefield Earth is very very sweet oh what about well I call it a my - what about that one Mission Impossible - that I liked it picked right I like not great but I really like that I like the kinetic energy of it I like the fact this is James Bond for the 21st century for a change the woman it's Tandy knew somebody home one gets to initiate stuff she gets to do stuff oh that's up the last third of the movie the Bond girls always just stood around and right you were their victims or our seductresses or Tom Cruise as a tech man gone in 60 seconds I want to go see this movie because we've got a lot of action and feeling cars and stuff and who do you think is in it [ __ ] Cage runnel Duvall and who else Angelina Jolie that's what you think no she ain't no that's mr. lips earlier little [ __ ] it's bait and switch its bait and switch he's not it ain't you look at the full-page ad they don't even show you the ball its cage and Roley you know the ads the the commercials she's in this movie about 4 minutes and 10 seconds stinks it's really that's really false and you want to see more of her she's really interesting but is it isn't a Robert Duvall the the the finest actor of his generation John Cusack isn't he the finest actor of his new life Adela well that's the best movie I've seen have you the best movie I've seen in yes is it doing business is that move well it's gonna do more business now just while we're talking about it yeah but nothing but it should open big and word of mouth aside have been regularly and also being John now did you read the book know that he Nick Hornby's book yeah I read the book and I thought that the movie was a lovely faithful depiction of what I thought I thought what can they do to improve this book and I thought it's a perfect book all that we can do is move the location from London to Chicago and then you've got a great movie well yeah and so but even that worked I thought it did and he was of course the star of Being John Malkovich that's right he does nice force that is a great actor is the heir to Duvall yeah okay we got a anything else here road trip small-time crooks Big Momma's House love Labor's lost any of these in grab you there well Neil long she's on the show that's worth the startup tab her for stardom is had to be big okay good all right she areas well here's the book ladies gentlemen its these are all collection of bad reviews movies you didn't like like the picture yeah it's cute Macaulay Halle Culkin is that what that is Roger Ebert ladies gentlemen we'll be right back [Applause] you [Music] pedda gentlemen coming up on tonight's program Lenny Kravitz will be here Kris Mad Dog Russo on the program tomorrow Siskel and Ebert so we'll have to get the recliner and there's one of those studies now published by some educational group the american academy of science and it gives an idea so like a little a little yardstick about what your kid ought to know and when the kids should know it in school for example in the second grade they believe americans second graders should understand that water comes in forms of liquid and also solid that that should be comprehended by a second grader a fifth grader should pretty much understand gravity and they believe that a twelfth grader should know that siskel is the skinny one and ebert is the fat one they said [Applause] [Music] some nights some nights out here I'm nearly lulled to sleep by the sound of my own voice yak yak yak yak get out here telling his little jokes let's talk about city slickers too now I've seen this movie I'm like two weeks ahead of the rest of America I've seen the new city slickers movie I I enjoyed it and as I said to you during the little commercial break it was my opinion I'm no expert I know Cisco I'm no Ebert right I mean three of me wouldn't be an Ebert I didn't say the balcony is closed but apparently the snack bar is not that easy gentlemen here at Lincoln Center the largest motion picture screen in the world one of those huge 80-foot motion picture screens was installed this week and it will show the special of format the big IMAX of format films of course before they erected the screen the only place they could show those films was on Roger Ebert's pants but now [Applause] it was it that you a your wife Lucy Webb my future ex-wife future ex-wife there's a bright note for the in-laws traveled to Italy well that's not recently wasn't yeah yes it was this summer maybe the film usual suspects was at the Cannes Film Festival of course it was yes indeedy which is just a great time what is that like when you go to can is Eurotrash in bed polyester if I can be honest with you and every buffet Roger Ebert is clogging the line right is that what it is it's one of these I loved the film yeah but he gave the shrimp a big thumbs up and I like that you know what goes good with a shrimp please tell couple of frisky Johnnie's we'll take we'll take two over here please light on the left I never 10 new slogans waddle over and buy some number 9 look like Cisco eat like Ebert number 8 [Applause] ladies gentlemen today is the 80th anniversary of the creation of the donut now I know that may not mean much to you but to Roger Ebert it's a religious holiday the reason the reason I bring this up you know in the past we've had a great deal of fun with Roger Ebert jokes maybe perhaps a little too much fun so tonight I'm very happy to announce that that little donut joke I just told about Roger Ebert that will be forever no more our very very last Roger Ebert joke here let me have it right here this one right here this is our last that's right ladies gentlemen and now here to accept the cue card do me a favor please welcome Roger Ebert [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] gosh Dave this this is really nice I can't begin to tell you what a kind and gracious act this really is god bless you you bastard [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
