SIOUX FALLS: How Run Down Is South Dakota's Biggest City? This Is What We Found

[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well i am in sioux falls south dakota and i am looking and pointing the camera at the namesake falls of the city it's the big sioux river and these falls tumbled down this part of the city down this way to my left i'm going to head down there in a second downtown is this direction i'm going to head there shortly you can see there's lots of construction and not surprising because the city is growing um 19 or i'm sorry 2020 there was 192 000 people in the city about a year and a half later there's approximately 202 000 that's pretty steady and good growth so uh sioux falls is a it's got a healthy economy people are moving here but we'll dive into that a little bit right now it's all about these breathtaking falls i'm gonna head down show you more of it it's astonishingly beautiful isn't it there's still more to see believe it or not too this big sioux river it runs around the city i looked at a map it kind of forms almost a full circle around the city and along the entire river in the city are parks on both sides sioux falls in fact has over 70 parks one of the better developed park systems in the united states and why wouldn't you if you've got something like this to build your parks on there's also bike trails along those parks i think i read that the bike trail around sioux falls is 20 miles long so you can get plenty of exercise as you bike or jog or even walk around this beautiful river i mean it is really beautiful too there's a few people out here now not a lot though it's about nine in the morning on a saturday i'm here early on purpose because i kind of wanted to have the place to myself a little bit this was packed with people yesterday afternoon and there's still some people out here this early morning wow look at that huh isn't that something there's an even bigger falls there i'm gonna go on the other side of that the wind's kicking up a little you can probably hear it they do have wind here pretty fierce wind it's one of the knocks on the city but we'll get into that later but uh it's not really cold it's about 70 degrees but wow is that ever beautiful and it continues down this way yeah that is man that's floors you how amazing it is here now i'm on this walkway it gives you a pretty nice view of the falls cascading down just past downtown that is something isn't it just letting you take it all in for a second and there's the big sioux and all her glory again all right so i'm going to head into downtown this way and take a look around see what's see what all's down there as i make my way into downtown i had to stop here this is one of the city's landmarks it's called the ark of dreams uh you can see that it spans the uh big sioux river here and in that direction is the falls not far away half mile maybe but uh the uh arch itself has a break in the middle and that's supposed to represent a leap of faith to achieve your dreams it spans 100 yards and they used 60 tons of steel to build it yeah you can't miss it when you drive into downtown it's pretty awesome i'm just going to give you another quick look at this arc of dreams um from the base i'm standing right below it really get a feel for [Music] how magnificent it is when you stand this close to it yeah and again there's the big sioux river as it winds through the city and downtown is over there straight ahead and now it's the weekend so it looks like people started early 10 o'clock this morning on their sipping cycle basically a bar where you drink and power the vehicle down the road yourself followed by bicycles a common sight in the city and of course people trailing behind it's kind of a funny side but i also had to stop here because one of the city features is its sculpture walk lined throughout the city our sculptures of all different sizes and shapes and kinds you can see one across the street and we got a another one here of a dog playing guitar anyway i'm heading into downtown now so uh let's see what's going on there all right i'm here at another one of the city's landmarks this is a life-size 100 re reproduction of the statue of david and you can see everything's shown in its male glory if you will and uh not everyone agreed with it when it was put here i read that a baptist minister in the 70s wrote a letter to the newspaper saying that because of the statue being placed where it is here in downtown that the people of sioux falls will start running around the area naked that immoral acts will be performed in the parks of the city and that in fact god will probably strike it down with lightning so that was 50 years ago didn't happen but nonetheless it's pretty cool i mean it's pretty awesome really sioux falls is not a huge city but it's big enough that it has just about everything in the way of big box retailers and restaurants chains like that it's got all the big city amenities but it's not huge and when you're here you don't feel the weight of millions of people around you the high crime the horrid traffic which makes it for me as i get older really appealing you get older you get so tired of fighting traffic just to get anywhere and dodging crime the city is very low on crime um one of the lowest in the country the latest figures i believe there were five murders last year and what crime they do have is mostly property crime particularly vehicle theft this is uh one of the top cities for uh vehicle theft for your car getting stolen but other than that it's really not that bad the cost of living here is lower than the national average there's no state income tax and uh the unemployment rate is the thing that really sticks out 2.1 percent if that's not the lowest in the country it is close then of course there's the weather there's always the weather up here isn't it it gets cold in the winter here not messing around cold extended periods below zero minus 20 not that unusual conversely it gets really hot in the summer above 100 degrees it's not unusual and it's not a dry heat it is a hot muggy heat one that as a texan i am completely familiar with looks like a girl fishing yeah these are everywhere here statues sculptures it's a real nice feature of the downtown and there's another one right there and uh state that looks like a theater all lit up i love it when they look like that yeah so the state theater was built in 1926 and it was quite the show place at the time closed in 91 due to lack of interest and theaters moving to the suburbs but it has been uh refurbished and saved and now shows movies again here in downtown [Music] yeah that's what you like to see and look at this building it's in beautiful old building and over there is a jl beers i had uh lunch there in at that place in fargo i thought it was the only one i guess not let's give you one last look down this street but i'm going to get in the bronco and explore some of the neighborhoods here nearby the city center i'm just out of downtown look at some of the houses the neighborhoods some pretty interesting old houses here i like old neighborhoods like this most likely not an hoa hounding them about every little thing even though in all fairness hoas have their uses you know so as to not allow people to leave their junk junkers in the front of the street being one of them but i think all of us homework homeowners can agree that uh some hoas go overboard yeah i'm continuing to drive to this neighborhood look at that big old grand house that's something there huh looks like it needs some work but that's a beautiful house [Music] it's a shame to see it in that condition all the houses here look pretty good though i love these old wood houses we can't have those in texas because of the uh termites my wife she doesn't like them she likes our big brick houses in texas but uh i like some of these wood houses i think they're interesting looking just going to continue to cruise through the neighborhood a little bit here north of uh downtown there's your classic white picket fence house huh it's pretty i usually don't like yellow but i like that it's lovely it's pretty nice little neighborhood here i'm directly west of downtown look at some of these houses that wow i don't know what to say about that that is a lot of satellite dishes okay so i am south of downtown now yeah these were the or this is where the big beautiful houses are [Music] clearly this is the nice part of town i mean look at that over there that is a bonafide mansion there huge house beautiful now for those of you who may want to post the comment asking why i don't go to the outer parts of the city the newer part you know where the suburbs are the new construction is i don't really go to those kind of places because to me they all kind of look the same mostly when i do a video i'm pretty much just there to see the downtown and the neighborhoods surrounding downtown because they're usually older and much more interesting like these houses here i mean these houses are just beautiful i had to pass by this one here take a look look at that came by it earlier and here too i don't know if you can see it because of the yeah you can see the sun yeah beautiful old homes very nice part of town here clearly i passed this one earlier had to come back and take another look at it look at that that is some kind of house there and across the street from it really beautiful neighborhood here i'm continuing my way through the west side of the city half mile or so out of downtown again look at all these trees so nice huh all right i am east of downtown now just a few blocks off check out the neighborhoods already interesting [Music] about that house huh hasn't painted in a while but could be amazing yeah actually quite a few big homes here and some smaller ones is this a house not sure it's boarded up house next to it's boarded up too mostly people live here i guess rushmore motel wow now you see a lot of these uh little strip mall casinos here and i've read that many in the city don't particularly care for them consider them a blight i'm not sure how i feel about him either what do you guys think especially uh you locals of sioux falls comment below uh tell me what you think but i tend to not care for them yeah comment below and tell me what you think anyway i'm passing this rushmore motel it's got a fantastic looking motel sign there that he used for the cover anyway i'm gonna head back to the hotel and grab the wife okay so i've grabbed the wife and we're back at the falls because she wanted to see him see those shoes she got those just for this huh i don't think you can climb over there i've never seen anybody up there huh there's places over here that we could climb though that are good so we go over there if you want it's a bit of a walk i don't know how if pictures really show you that just keep going that way yeah this uh this is not easy terrain to walk on well it's not easy sandals are not the right shoes lots of people here now though amongst all this beauty some ass has put their cigarette out that annoys the out of me people like that should have the tar knocked out of them anyway been here before but this is so awesome and yes i'm gonna pick that up as soon as i turn this button off the wife's not having an easy time of it you're not much of a climber okay hey language i'm not going to insult you mouth all right we're here at the best part huh yeah beautiful huh yeah that's awesome here they tumble down that way a little farther yeah you're probably sick of it by now but one more shot of these spectacular sioux falls i haven't got it from this angle yet all right how beautiful is that all right we are leaving the falls area and we're gonna go in here some kind of uh activity going on here this saturday afternoon in june [Music] we're gonna go check it out the original corn pie i admit i've never heard of that got lots of food and crafts here and it looks like some kind of uh indian tribal dance over here gotta go check it out they got some food trucks out here i do love food trucks but we're gonna eat lunch later somewhere else late lunch and it looks like we're finally gonna get a show [Music] kids that's pretty cool yeah look at this guy dance [Music] he's having a good time look at him well i have to tell you guys that smells awesome i would have some but i'm going to eat somewhere else it's pretty cool here uh a great afternoon lots of stuff lots of little shops yeah i see all these flags everywhere from different countries [Music] this is the uh festival of cultures that's what they're having out here today and they got a possum from the zoo looks like he or she is having a good time having some dinner that's awesome this t-shirt one of the best albums ever recorded in my top 10 all time my wife got lost where'd she go oh there she is you got to be in really good shape to do that you know what i'm saying i mean you know almost as good of shape as me [Music] you gotta have a lot of strength in your arms and lift you got a lot had a lot of strength everywhere yeah fun it would be fun for you to learn that yeah the sun's finally coming out now [Music] now that we've seen a lot of blue sky over here now that we're leaving the area and going into the downtown the sun comes out sun doesn't follow us honey it hides from us hides from you yeah all right we're gonna go into a local bar restaurant that was on divers drive-ins and dives guy fieri came here it's called uh bread and circus yeah they've got the picture of guy fieri up there and okay so we're having a couple local beers [Music] you're having the harvest nectar right yes yeah the sour so it's got mango pineapple and south dakota honey and i'm having the is that the fernson farmhouse l yeah it looks like that also from right here in sioux falls yeah all right i'm going to the restroom here you got to get a laugh out of that when uh guy fury came in he ordered this the vietnamese fried chicken sandwich so it's a bunch of stuff i can't pronounce can you pronounce it no no i'm not going to try bon meat pickles cilantro aioli they're brioche i know i'm mangling it but if it's good enough for guy fieri it is good enough for me so i'm gonna eat some of it now and have the rest yeah well i will be trying it and then we'll be having a rest for dinner oh in addition to that i'm having my favorite fruity soda in the world doritos fruit punch so awesome i can't believe they had it here but anyway yeah what is this aoe ao cilantro okay cool well you know what i am not a chicken sandwich kind of guy i rarely order them but that is awesome that's the best one i ever had but you're a fried chicken person i knew you'd like i do like fried chicken but even on fried chicken i don't like them sandwiches but yeah highly recommend all right we are in the heart of downtown and we're going to go to one of the bars down here and have a drink this lovely late saturday afternoon you see all the people huh it's very lively down here yeah yeah lots of people here today so it's pretty awesome we're going to go into the blarney stone irish bar can't go wrong with that so that's where we're going now well we're inside the blarney stone pub and it is packed [Music] and you got a jam cider right triple jam triple jam cider and i got my usual guinness we're lucky to get seats yeah so busy in here okay our time in sioux falls south dakota is done we are going to head to nebraska next that will be our 47th state so uh i've never been to nebraska well i have but it's been a long time but anyway yeah that's our 47th state so be looking for that video actually there will be two of them be looking for those next sip and cycle we had to get a little shot of that that looks like fun i said we don't have a drink we can't really cheer yeah that looks like fun you
